Aragón Front, 1937. Lluís (Marcel Borràs), a young republican officer temporarily assig-ned to an inactive post, meets an enigmatic widow and falls in love with her. Carlana (Núria Prims) tricks him into falsifying a document that makes her the Lady of the manor.Lluís’ best friend, Soleràs (Oriol Pla), a demoted officer, discovers the fraud and in exchange for his silence demands that Lluís take his son and wife, with whom Soleràs is secretly in love, away from the bombings in Barcelona. When Trini (Bruna Cusí) arrives in the village it doesn’t take her long to discover Lluís’ be-trayal and a “state of war” is established between them that will shake their moral foundations to the core. A film that examines the intensity of human passion against the backdrop of war.

“As in two of my previous films, El mar (The sea) and especially Pa negre (Black bread), the central theme of UNCERTAIN GLORY is the moral devastation wreaked on humans by war. Rather than focusing on the conflict itself or a political analysis of the war, it examines the feelings and emotions of the characters. It is through them that we discover the conse-quences of war far from the battlefield, in our case, so close and yet so far away. UNCER-TAIN GLORY is a response to the need to close this chapter with the third film in an unex-pected trilogy. The dramatic structure of this story is based on the magnificent and powerful novel by Joan Sales. Adapting a novel that is more than 1,000 pages long involves a laborious selection process. The most philosophical and religious parts were purposely left out in order to crea-te a more fluid story in which action is generated by images and the spectator’s attention is focused on the raw feelings. It has been said of UNCERTAIN GLORY that it would be a love story if only it weren’t a war story. As far as the film is concerned, I would say just the opposite: it could have been a war film but for the fact that it is a love story. A passionate and romantic love that pits two men who love the same women against each other and two women who are attracted to these same two men. Making the film is like playing a piece of music with four hands: four characters living through the same events but each one of them experiencing and reacting to them differently. The diversity in recreating the internal and external worlds of the characters is best captured with polyhedric filming, where the use of various cameras to create constant movement is very useful. The locations were also a critical piece. This is no man’s land, an unwelcoming wasteland where the characters are silhouetted against the arid landscape, lines in the desert sand. The interiors are starkly austere. The visuals are unadorned but powerful, with few obvious references to the period and more emphasis on the austerity and simplicity of the elements that are absolutely necessary. But above all, we need to talk about the actors. Four actors. Four very young men and wo-men. New faces, full of enthusiasm who are making their mark. That come from no one knows where. With some powerful supporting actors to assist them, to be sure, but the work of the main characters - and I’m convinced of this - is formidable.”

Joan Sales was not only one of the great writers of Catalan literature but also one of the stron-gest proponents of the language. During the war he was stationed in Madrid, Aragon and Ca-talonia, where he served as an infantry commander of the Republican Army. During 1939, he managed to survive in various concentration camps in France. It was not until 1948, after years of roaming the world that he returned to Catalonia to publish everything he could in Catalan. In 1954 he embarked upon the adventure of writing “what he knew about” and the result was UNCERTAIN GLORY, a novel that was destined to be heard through the eyes and read from the voice of experience. It tells the story of the people we don’t read about in the history books, those who are defeated by things other than war. The desperation of a generation, a country. A call to understand what a battle really is.UNCERTAIN GLORY was one of the most important narrative voices of the post-war period in Catalonia, helping to explain more clearly through words what others could not. Translated into French, German, Dutch and English, this work by Joan Sales’ was recently lis-ted by The Economist as one of the top ten fiction novels.
