SINISTER ANALYSIS

ABBIE GREEN

Page 2: Sinister trailer analysis

• This first shot shows close up shot of a child's drawing of people being hung. This is one of the first shots. This connotes that there is danger and that there is children involved. The drawing looks fairly old so we know that it was drawn prior to the events that happen in the film. We know it is set in America due to spelling of the word 'mom'. Children are often featured in horrors as they are innocent and the audience do not always know what they are thinking. Due to children being linked to innocence we do not always know what the child will do and we do in fact find it shocking when children in films do commit crimes.

• This establishing shot shows the location of the film, we can see that there are boxes being unloaded from a truck, this shows that they are moving in to a new house. Many horrors feature a family being moved in to a new house, this is used as nobody knows what events may have happened within the house. This creates enigma. The house is not a typical scary house. The reason for the house looking normal as it were is so the audience does not guess the plot of the film too soon in to the film. The fact that it is a normal looking house creates even more horror within the film as it makes the audience feel that it could happen to anybody's home.

This close up shot shows the ‘sinister’ character. Normally trailers do not give away the main character who creates the horror. The character is dressed in black and has black hair. In this shot the sinister character is walking in the water, the fact that the character is walking underwater shows us that the character is not human and has some kind of power. The character is pale and also has black underneath his eyes. Music Is not used when this character is shown, there is only a man who is explaining who this character is, the man says that he is called “bagol” and that he takes children's souls. So we know that the two children are in danger as soon as we hear this.

This long shot introduces the characters, this is typical of a horror film. A lot of families are used in horror movies this is to make the film feel more real and make it seem that it could happen to you in your own home with your own family. The shot also shows the family sitting down and eating, the fact that all the family are there and they are being filmed makes it seem that somebody is looking over them. The mujsic in the background is a slow tempo, this is used to build up the tension. In the background there isnt any music being played just the dad of the family explaining that he is writing a book here and that is why they had to move house.

This long shot show the character ‘bagol’ with a group of children who look possessed. The fact that all of these characters are facing the camera with the finger on there lips shows that they are telling someone to be quiet and that one of the family members is in trouble. As we know that ‘bagol’ takes the souls of the children we know that the two children who are in the family are in trouble. They are wearing ordinary clothes but we can see that they have a lot of make up on to make them pale and look ghost like.

This close up shot shows a symbol. A symbol is used throughout the whole trailer, a lot like ours. When the symbol is shown as I previously said there is a man explaining who this ‘sinister’ character is he also talks about the symbol. A symbol is used to create enigma. This close up shot also shows some sort of woman/doll on the floor this connotes dangers she appears dead. The symol is a deep red colour this connotes death and blood.
