    MarketOverview

    FundManagement2008willberememberedasoneofthemostvolatileperiodsintheequitymarketsasalmosteveryAsianmarketwitnessedlowsnotseensincetheAsianfinancialcrisis.Fundmanagementfirmssawassetsmoveoutoftheregionintosafer,fixedincomeinstrumentsandmanytookthemorecautiousapproachofsimplyholdingontocash.

    Whilsttherewasaslowdowninthefund

    managementindustry,privatebanks'headcountremainedrelativelystable,withsomeevenaddingnewstaffintheirdiscretionaryandresearcharms.Astheequitymarketsbecameadifficultenvironmenttoinvestin,assetmanagementhousesdiversifiedintohiringcreditanalysts.

    Interestingly,therewasgrowthinthenumberofhedgefundsinSingapore,withmanynewbutsmallershopssettingupin2008.Unfortunately,theirdemisewasalsoquickastheyhadverylimitedcapitalandleveragingbecamemoredifficult.

    Asmanagementfeesreducedandcostbecameakeyconcern,internationalfundmanagementhousespreviouslyoperatinginbothSingaporeandHongKongalsostartedtoconsolidatetheiroperationsineitherofthesetwocountries.

    Theearlypartof2009maystillbevolatile,particularlyfortheequitymarkets.However,weanticipatethatfirmswillcontinuetoexplorethebondmarkets,especiallyhighyields,asthereisgreaterinterestfromforeigninvestorsinthisassetclass.

    Corporate/InstitutionalBankingCorporate/institutionalbankingsawmoderategrowthinrecruitmentinthefirsthalfof

    2008butthissloweddrasticallytowardsquarterfour.Manybanksbecamecautiousinextendingcreditfacilitiestonewandeven

    existingclients.Asaresult,staffresources

    wereredeployedtomanagecurrentfacilitiesasopposedtobringinginnewbusinesses.

    Bankswithrelationshipmanagersspecialisinginindustriessuchasinfrastructureandnaturalresourcesidentifiedthesesectorsaskeyareasforgrowth.Otherssoughttodownsize,redeploymanpowerandbuildontheircorebusinessbyleveragingitsstrengthsincashmanagementandtradefinance.Asaresult,overseascandidateswiththeseskillsets,

    especiallythosefromSouthEastAsia,willbeseenasanalternativesourceoftalenttomitigatethecostofrecruitment.

    Wealsosawinterestfromoff-shorefinancialinstitutions(especiallyMiddleEasternfirms)settingupofficesinSingaporeandusingthisasaspringboardintoAsia.ThisledtoashortageofnichebankerswithspecialisationinIslamicbanking,particularlythosewithregionalexposure.Asaresult,bankssoughttosourcetalentfromoverseas.

    Movingforward,wemayseeaforcedreturntothetraditionalrelationshipbankingmodelwhereclientsseekfundingthroughcorporatelending.Hence,weexpectthattherewillbecontinueddemandforcorporatebankerswithgoodcreditandmarketingskillsthroughout2009.

    Theoveralloutlookforcorporatebankingremainsmoderatewithkeyrecruitmentfocusedonmorespecialisedskillsets.Withtheongoingcrisisinthefinancialmarkets,wedonotexpectanincreaseinsalariesorincentivesin2009.

    SMEBankingTherecruitmentofrelationshipmanagersfocusingonsmalltomediumenterprises(SMEs)experiencedstronggrowthin2008,

    asmanySMEscontinuedtoexpandintotheregionandbanksaddedheadcountduetohealthyprofitmarginsinthissector.Leading

    banksalsoenhancedtheirbankersefficiency

    throughcrosssellingandgreaterrelianceoncashmanagementandtradefinancecapabilitiesinordertoreducelendingcostsandrisks.Asaresult,wesawincreasingdemandforbankerswiththeseskillsetsinatightliquiditymarket.

    Themajorityof2008sawforeignbanksaggressivelycompetingwiththeirlocalcounterpartstoprovidedomesticcorporateswithlendingandcashportfoliomanagement

    services.Whilstlocalbankswerestillonadiscretionalannualbonusstructure,foreignbanksofferedaquarterlycommissionincentiveprogrammetoattractSMEbankers.Movinginto2009,weexpecttheSMEmarketsegmenttogrowatamoderatepace.

    SalesandTradingSalesandtradingsawanumberofheadcountcasualtiesin2008.ManyoftheWesternbanksdownsizedtheirstafforevencloseddesksinordertoconsolidateriskbacktoheadquarters.Thiswasadramaticchangefrompreviousyears,withthefocusshiftingtomanagingriskandcost.Weevensawtradersbeinglaidoffacrossalmosteveryassetclass,withtheCDOandequityderivativetradersmostaffected.

    Fortunately,therewasnotmassiveretrenchmentwithinsalesteamsand

    headcountremainedrelativelyintact.Duetothevolatilemarket,manydeskheadsfacedadifficulttaskwhenbudgetingfor2009.Whilstweexpectlownumbersofnewtradingpositionsin2009,wedoanticipatesalesteamstogrowatamoderatepacewithafocusoninstitutionalandwealthyindividuals.Banksmayalsostrengthentheircommoditybusinessintheregionwherethereremainsademandfromcorporationsfortheirhedgingneeds.

    Duringthefirsthalfoftheyear,somemajorprivatebankscontinuedtheirexpansionplanswiththeopeningofnewprivatebankingcentresoutsideofSingaporeinonshoreoperationsacrossAustralia,China,Indonesia,KoreaandIndia.However,aftertheunprecedentedworldwidefinancialturmoilinthesecondhalfofyear,thewealthmanagementbusinesswassignificantlyaffected.

    Theprivatebankingsubsidiariesofsomeoftheworldsinvestmentbanksfacedanuncertainfutureastheirparentgroupssufferedhugecreditlosses.Weanticipateaslowdownor'modest'growthoftheirassetsin2009asaresult.Manyestablishedprivatebankssufferedlargeoutflowsofassetsundermanagementtolocalandboutiquesetups,duetothesecurityandstabilitythesebusinessescouldoffer.Clientsalsobecamemorediscerningandwerelesslikelytomovetheirassetstoarivalbankwhentheirrelationshipmanagerchangedorganisations.
