By Tanya Randall After topping off a very successful 2011 season with a Columbia River Circuit Championship, Pamela Capper was contemplating a trip south for the winter. The Cheney, Wash., barrel racer was ap- prehensive, but she decided to take leave of absence from her job as a school bus driver and explore the uncharted territory of the pro rodeo winter run. A $2,018 victory at the $2,900-added Parada del Sol Rodeo in Scottsdale, Ariz., did much to lessen her anxiety and prove her deci- sion was the right one. “I decided to jump in with both feet and go,” said Capper. “I had a lot of anxiety not knowing what to expect—learning the colise- ums, where to park, things like that. I had a full plate just guring that out. Now that I’ve been out here, my anxiety level has gone down.” Capper started out her trip with a bang, tying for second in the average at the National Western in Denver. She also picked up checks at Belton, Texas, Tucson and San Angelo, Texas. “I had a little trouble on my last run at San Angelo,” said the mother of two grown children. “I didn’t have a good rst barrel and we were headed dead towards the second barrel and she went to the left side of it. I was fth in the average going in and that no time took us out of the average.” Capper used her run at Fort Mo- jave, Ariz., as a condence builder for Scottsdale. “I didn’t like waiting a week to make another run, but I didn’t have a choice,” said Capper, who also won championships in Northwest Pro Rodeo Association and Washington Barrel Racing Association last year. “I was glad I entered Fort Mojave. It was good for our condence even though they were two completely different setups.” Capper also had a little added pressure at Scottsdale. Her par- ents snowbird in the area and had brought friends to watch her com- pete in the Saturday performance. “No pressure,” she laughed. “My parents are very supportive. They’ve watched me run at a couple of places. I was excited my family and their friends were there to see it.” So far, her Southern vacation has grossed nearly $12,000 and has her in Top 15 contention, thanks to the efforts of her homegrown super- star Sheza Smooth Flight (“Jesse”). The 10-year-old mare is from the last foal crop of Dinner Flight, a noted barrel horse sire in the Northwest and Intermountain West, and out of Lady Lasmooth, a daughter of Smooth Move that Capper had intended to train for barrels, but got passed over in favor of other horses. “One of the hardest things was getting her used to the traveling,” said Capper. Jesse also picked up a virus while at Denver that forced her to vet out of three rodeos after Fort Worth. “They told me to stay off of her for seven days. On Day 8, I ran at Belton. I had a timing error, but still managed to place.” Capper is currently driving back to Texas from Arizona. Road to the Horse 2012 Goes Global with International Teams The entire equine industry has been abuzz since the 2011 Road to the Horse Legends event which matched the United States’ three largest superstar clinicians against one another in a horseman-ship duel of epic proportions. The twenty million dollar question everyone has been asking since is “How are you going to top this?” Event Owner/Producer Tootie Bland’s answer? Go global, fi nd the world’s best clinicians, place them in an innovative international team format and let them go toe to toe for the World Champion-ship of Colt Starting at the 2012 Road to the Horse March 9-11, 2012 in Murfreesboro, TN. “Going global means new horsemen, new styles of horsemanship and an exciting challenge to see who’s the best in the world. Road to the Horse will host the fi rst ever International Match in Colt

Starting. We have invited Australia and Canada to see if they can match the talent in the United States. National Pride is on the line and we will fi nd out in Murfreesboro who rules the world. This is going to more horsemanship in one arena than ever before. I can’t wait for this one!” says Bland. Traditionally, three to four clinicians have been matched up for this prestigious competition which gives competitors just a few short hours over two days to train an untouched young horse to ac-cept a rider in front of a standing-room-only live audience and the attentive eyes of the worldwide equine press corp. While training has been limited to two days in the past, the 2012 event will feature round pen sessions on all three days. “We’re doubling down! Never before have six clinicians shared the arena fl oor and never before have we paired competitors up in a team format. Road to the Horse is known for its twists and turns and we’ll defi nitely have some challenges the competitors will have to face. The excitement of this event is destined to be Tennessee’s equivalent of the Kentucky Derby,” says Bland. For an annual fee of only $39.95, Nation members receive privi-leges such as advance ticket purchase opportunities, a special prime seating section, merchandise and apparel discounts, early admission to the event and an interactive Road to the Horse Nation website. To become a member, visitwww.roadtothehorsenation.com.For more information on Road to the Horse 2012, visit www.road-tothehorse.com or call 325-736-5000.Road to the Horse Road to the Horse, the World Championship of Colt-Starting is unlike any other event in the equine or entertainment industry. The three-day event will match six of the world’s best horse trainers and clinicians of today against one another as they train unbroken colts to ride in just a few short hours in front of a packed live audience and television cameras. By combining education, edge-of-your-seat suspense, entertainment and the love of the horse, Road to the Horse has been responsible for solidifying the position of today’s horsemanship heroes and launching the careers of tomorrow’s hot-test new stars. In the process, the event itself has become a catalyst for the advancement of natural horsemanship. Hosted by Rick Lamb, of RFD-TV’s The Horse Show with Rick Lamb, spectators are guaranteed not only to have a good time, but also to walk away with training knowledge that will improve their relationship with horses. The event is supported by title sponsor Western Horseman and in association with AQHA. For more information on the 2012 Road to the Horse visit www.roadtothehorse.com or call 325-736-5000.

Correction: We mistakenly reported in last week’s Barrel Racing Report that Carlee Pierce was riding Kiss This Guy (Tyson) in the Finals at the San Antonio pro rodeo. She rode Tyson in the Semi-Finals and then was back on Rare Dillion (Dillon) for the fi nals!

RodeoHouston Continued on Page 12

The great RodeoHouston is underway. So far, there has been Super Series I-Round 1, Super Series I-Round 2, Super Series...and so on. It’s a lot to keep track of! Here is a short explanation of how RodeoHouston goes from Super Series I to awarding a check for $50,000 in the Championship round on March 18, 2012. There are 5 Super Series that each have 8 contestants. The total purse of each of these 5 Super Series is $20,000. The money is divided into $5,000 per night for the 3 Go Rounds in each Super Series and $5,000 in the aggregate. The top 4 money earners in each Super Series qualify to the Semifi nals for a total of 20 contestants. There are Semifi nals 1 & 2 which payout $5,000 per round and have 10 contestants each. The top 4 from each Super Series will qualify for the Super Series Championship and the remaining six in each Semifi nals will qualify to the Wild Card round. There will be a total of 12 contestants in the Wild Card round. The top 2 will from the Wild Card round will qualify to the Cham-pionships. That will put 10 contestants in the Championship round. They all run once and the top 4 come back to run in the Shootout for the $50,000 check. The barrel racers are running for an amazing $200,000 total dollars at Rodeo Houston!

Rocking and Rolling at RodeoHoustonRODEO NOTES WITH SHERRY CERVI

HORSE: MP Meter My Hay “Stingray”BRR: What qualities does Stingray have that allow her to adapt to the conditions at RodeoHouston so successfully for the past 4 years? CERVI: They are really good about letting you get in the arena and practice and that helps a lot. There is just lots of adrena-line and it’s really loud there, fortunately the adrenaline and loud conditions don’t bother her. Her ability to stay focused under these conditions gives me more chances to run at a lot more money.BRR: Does your strategy change after you are qualifi ed to the Semi-Finals?CERVI: Well, you just make sure to make your best run and go as fast as you can. It does help that they have the Wild Card in case something goes wrong in the Semifi nals. You still have make your best run in each round.BRR: What are your plans for the year with your horses?CERVI: George (Mp A Man With Roses) is getting a little more consistent, so as he gets more consistent I will run him more. I will keep running Stingray in the pens she likes and where the big money is. I always haul a trailerload of colts along as well and as the year goes on one of them might get used as well. NOTES: Sherry Cervi and mount Mp Meter My Hay have run the fastest time so far at Rodeo Houston of 14.17 in Go Round 3 of Super Series II.

RODEO NOTES WITH BENETTE LITTLEHORSE: JL Dash Ta HeavenBRR: What qualities does JL Dash Ta Heaven have that allow him to adapt to the conditions at the winter rodeos so successfully?LITTLE: He has always had the talent and now he is handling traveling better and better. I think that is the key to his success over this winter. He doesn’t really need tuning on the barrels but he does need some riding to keep his mind right. If he just gets to go do something then he seems to rest better. I just keep him quiet and have a good place for him to rest. He has really learned how to rest on the road compared to when he was younger. He has grown up a lot over the last couple years.BRR: What are the challenges to hauling a stallion?LITTLE: It’s a challenge to fi nd a place to stall them, I haul two stallions together, JL Dash Ta Heaven and Chicados Cash, so housing is a little tricky. You have to be more mindful of where you put them, it is not more diffi cult just takes more planning, sometimes I may have to keep them off the grounds to take proper care of them. They both do pretty well on the road, but I just try to be mind-ful of where other people are. I try to warm up away from everybody else, off by myself to keep his mind on his run. People are pretty good at the rodeos because many of us are hauling studs. In fact, Robyn Herring (Firewaterontherocks) and Mary Burger (A Streak Of Fame) are both riding studs. Also, quite a few people are riding mares which can be affected by the studs just as much as the studs are by them so everybody is pretty good about paying attention in the warm up pens. He (JL Dash Ta Heaven) has grown up a bunch since he was 5, now he eating well on the road and carrying more weight than he did when he was younger. I try not to be gone too long before I bring him back to the Ranch (Jud Little Ranch) and let him rest. BRR: What are your plans for the year with your horses?LITTLE: After Rodeo Austin, (I run on March 18th & 19th and hope to make the fi nals on March 24th) I will get off them and leave them home to breed mares. Both studs will go home until June 1 for a busy breeding season. We froze semen on both of them in the fall for the fi rst breedings of the year so they could be at these winter rodeos. I will probably break them back out at maybe Reno and then the 4th of July run. While they are breeding I will have to decide which mares to ride. We have Aced My Bully, Gotta Be A Red Nick (by Dr Nick Bar) who I will ride at Atlantic City, Sheza Exclusive Dash, Ima Cash Dancer, Des Delight all available and we will see which ones are working the best. Jud (husband Jud Little) usually picks which ones he thinks will do the best and then we haul them so that’s probably what we’ll do. NOTES: Benette Little with $8,050 in earnings is the high money winner in the barrel racing so far at Rodeo Houston.

Headin’ For HomeHeadin’ For Home by Mike Morrison by Mike Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries) Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)

“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want (Psalm 23) We need to keep that line from Scripture in the back of our minds and say it often during these

unsettled times. We need to focus more on Jesus and less on people and the world. I’m not saying we shouldn’t care about people and their trials. We should care. We should pray for them and with them. Second Corinthians 1:3-4 tells us God comforts us so that we can comfort others in need of comforting. But, we’re not to get so caught up in worldly affairs and all the negative news on the TV. Every day you can hear about vicious uprisings around the world, earthquakes and fl oods, the bad economy, higher gas prices and new diseases. If this isn’t bad enough, you can also hear about the ef-forts being made to take God’s name and prayer out of everything in this country which was founded on Christian principals. Jesus tells us twice in the Book of John 14, “Let not your heart be troubled.” He also told us many times not to be afraid. God has the control of everything on planet earth and even “a sparrow doesn’t fall to ground without His knowledge.” If you’ve made Jesus the Lord of your life, you have nothing to fear. God has unlimited abil-

ity and there is nothing too hard for Him to handle. His promises are true and He’ll never let you down. We can help you if you want a greater understanding of the Bible and God’s Word to us. Every Tuesday night in Gillette we have a teaching session in the Barn where we hold Bible studies and have interesting times of questions and answers. If you can’t make it to Gillette, you can get on our mailing list for FREE CD’s that are recorded at those sessions. We mail them out every couple of weeks AT NO CHARGE and no obligation to people all over the country and outside of the country, too. Just send your name and address to us at Box 2439, Gillette, WY 82717 and get ready to learn about God’s good plan for our lives!
