Barco SimCAD™: the all-in-one design and installation toolDesign analysis and prediction

Using SIMCAD, Barco's proprietary simulator design andoptimization tool, all display parameters and customerrequirements are easily translated into a highly detailed ray-tracing based model. SimCAD offers auto-optimization ofprojector placement and orientation (including obstructionanalysis) and yields accurate real-time predictions ofbrightness, contrast, and resolution including Mercator andAitoff plots of the channel coverage for even the most complextiled layouts. SIMCAD designs can be exported to commonCAD/CAM packages.

Installation and calibration

At the installation site, a computer-driven laser theodolite anddistance measuring tool automatically creates a 3D model ofthe display system, including coordinates for the theodoliteand eye points. Next, it marks reference points on thedisplay surface that are subsequently fixed using Barco'spatented Laser Diode Array Tool (LDAT). The projectors arethen carefully calibrated to these geometric references usingtest patterns generated by POLARIS, through the fast andaccurate alignment capabilities offered by xRACU andAUTOALIGN.

Configuration and optimization

SIMCAD’s ray-tracing accurately calculates the geometrydistortion and edge blending required for each projectorchannel. These parameters can be downloaded into the WARPprocessor of the projectors through the intermediate xRACUcommunication capabilities, automatically and accurately pre-aligning them for use in the designed display position.

Dedicated problems call for

The requirements for large field-of-view, high-resolution

displays are diverse. Simulation applications may require a

number of different system configurations such as front or rear

projection and different screen shapes from spherical to

cylindrical, conic, or flat. Screen sizes may range from 3’ x 3’ (1

x 1m) to 9’ x 60’ (3 x 20m) flat to a 90’ (30m) diameter

hemispherical dome. Users may require high brightness, high

contrast or both. The system may be single user or for multiple

simultaneous users.

On single-channel systems, projected images appear very good

and design compromises are virtually unnoticeable to even the

trained observer. In multi-channel applications, the most casual

observer will notice when the image channels do not align, the

brightness across channels is different, and the colors do not

match. Geometric distortions in large multi-channel displays

can be caused by projector misalignment, imperfect lenses and

folding mirrors, and by displays themselves. The uncorrected

images will have luminance and color variations both between

and within each projector channel.

Dedicated solutions

Blending with non-optimized projectors:

The first step in designing a solution for multi-channel

applications is to select projectors with the appropriate

features and optimizations. Since no single projector

technology is the best in all circumstances, Barco offers all

the major projection technologies available – CRT, LCD,

DLP™ – each optimized with a broad range of proprietary

Barco features to fit specific application needs.

Color uniformity

Complete uniformity incontrast and color betweenall screens is very crucial tothe image quality. Toeliminate channel-to-channel color variations,Barco has integratedDYNACOLOR™ and LinkedDYNACOLOR™ for its LCD andDLP™ projectors, in additionto chromatically matchedoptical components.

Brightness uniformity

The brightness has to be consistent throughout the entireimage area and constant over time. Barco light-valve projectorsattain and maintain brightness uniformity with Constant LightOutput (CLO) and Linked CLO.

Brightness differences

Geometry errorsColor differences

Imperfect blend

Simulation_brochure_04 18-11-2004 09:21 Pagina 11

Perfect geometry

Image shift and geometric distortion must not be visible overthe entire image area. Barco's Digital Waveform generatorenables you to eliminate distortion for CRT projectors. Digitalcontrol over geometry correction is accomplished with WARP 6 ™ on SIM 6 projectors and FLEX 4 ™ on SIM 4projectors.

Seamless blend

Transitions between projection channels in a multi-channelsystem should be seamless. To be able to offer a seamlessblend for all configurations and all brightness levels, whilemaintaining optimal contrast, Barco’s light-valve based displaysystems provide Optical Soft Edge Matching (OSEM) as wellas Electronic Soft Edge Matching (ESEM) or a combination ofboth. The 900 series CRT projectors are equipped with digitalSEMU II for electronic blending with time-of-day tracking.

Professional image quality

For LCD technology, TMR (True Motion Reproduction)combined with TDR (Transport Delay Reduction) reducesmotion artifacts and allows near-zero lag time for fast motionsimulation.

Simulation_brochure_04 18-11-2004 09:21 Pagina 12

Why LCD? Why DLP?LCD technology separates the lightsource from the modulator, enablingyou to reach far higher light outputs. The delay commonly associated withimage processing makes standard off-the-shelf LCD projectors unfit for fullmission rehearsal simulators.

Barco LCD projectors provide:• "Zero Delay" through TDR and WARP• Well-established and stable technology• Compact, rugged, portable versions• UXGA resolution availability• Integrated WARP 6™ geometry

distortion• DYNACOLOR for perfect primary color

matching• Extended Contrast Ratio (ECR) dimmer

for enhanced night-time contrast• High-quality optical blending• User-friendly maintenance• Quick internal projector alignment

and easy setup

DLP™ technology uses a small mirrorfor each pixel to digitally manipulatelight and is used when high lightoutput combined with a good contrastratio is indispensable. A Digital MicroMirror Device – DMD™-chip, developedby Texas Instruments, contains arectangular array of up to 1.3 millionhinge-mounted and tiltable microscopicmirrors, each corresponding to onepixel in a projected image. DLPprocessing requires a full frame timebefore displaying the image. This delayadds another frame time giving a totalsystem latency due to the modulator oftwo frames, or 33ms at 60Hz. Thisdelay confines DLP™ based projectorsto simulation applications whereinteraction to the projected image isless critical, such as Air Traffic Controland Ship Bridge Simulators.

Proprietary optimizations for light-valve technology

CLO: Constant Light Output This feature continually monitors andadjusts the brightness of the projector, eliminating the effect of lamp brightnessevolutions. In its linked configuration, CLOensures that all projectors in a multi-channel system maintain the samebrightness, independent of lamp life!

Linked CLOThe brightness of all linked projectors ismonitored and adjusted to the lowestvalue.

DynaColor™High-precision digital color spacetransformation eliminates channel-to-channel color variations. Direct controlof the primary and secondary colorsguarantees accurate color matching andprovides maximum addressable colorspace across the whole dynamic rangeof the display.

A graphical representation of the color triangle provides an excellent visualization of the colorcorrections being applied.

Linked DYNACOLOR™Linked DYNACOLOR automatically aligns theprojector to a common color triangle. Thisensures that all projectors in the entiresystem have exactly the same primary(and secondary for SIM 4) colorcoordinates. The system auto-sensesthe addition of a new projector to asystem and updates the common colortriangle as required. The linked DYNACOLOR option is included with thelinked CLO option.

Gray Level Definition(part of Dynacolor on SIM 6)

Controlling the nine intermediate graylevels for each primary color improvesgrayscale tracking across the differentchannels of the multi-channel setup.

Adjustable Scheimpflug CorrectionA modified lens mount has been developed that allows the lens to betilted in both horizontal and verticaldirection. This feature ensures perfectfocus on tilted screen configurations, thereby increasing the installationflexibility of the SIM 6 to a level uniquefor light valve projectors.

Advanced geometry distortion for SIM 6WARP 6 is the most advanced geometrydistortion technology, using proprietarybi-cubic interpolation. It is specificallyoptimized to preserve fine detail in theimage and suppress resampling artifacts- without processing delay. Thanks toWARP 6, fixed matrix projectors like theSIM 6 MKII and the SIM 6 ULTRA II can beused in a wide variety of curved-screenapplications, ranging fromstraightforward cylindrical displays to themost severe distortions.

Test chart scaled using generic bilinear algorithm Test chart scaled using WARP 6 ™ algorithm

FLEX 4 (DLP™)The BARCOREALITY SIM 4 DLP™ projectorfeatures native SXGA resolution andintegrates FLEX 4 geometry distortion,Barco’s built-in non-linear imagemapping technology, which guaranteesa high-detailed, smooth picture on anycurved screen installation. Moreover, the mechanical design and integratedfull off-axis optical lens shiftcapabilities make the SIM 4 easy tointegrate in a large variety of positionswithout the use of special mechanicalinterfaces.

Gamut Expansion & Matching for SIM 6All projectors of a multi-channel systemare carefully matched using uniqueoptical components, raising the coloraccuracy throughout the application.GEM improves the primary coloruniformity within the separate images. This technology also increases theaddressable color gamut of the combinedmulti-channel system.

TDR: Transport Delay Reduction(on Barco’s SIM 6 LCD projector series)

For Simulation applications, it isimperative that no processing delayoccurs inside the projector. For thispurpose, Barco has developed optimizeddigital processing algorithms, whichensure that the sum of all possibleimage corrections (including de-interlacing) amounts to an imperceptibledelay corresponding to less than threelines on-screen! This ensures that theSIM 6 projector will not be thebottleneck in your display system.

TMRMotion blur

TMRSmearing

(on Barco’s SIM 6 LCD projector series)

Thanks to TMR, the sharpness ofmoving images is preserved byadjusting motion compensation, detailand edge enhancement, and motion-adaptive noise reduction. In addition, the LCD speed can be adjusted to avoidovershoots that manifest themselvesas smearing in the reversed polarity, such as when the tail of a dark movingobject on a lighter background appearswhiter than the background.

i-BlendFrom a single high-bandwidth PC orworkstation output (>170 MHz), i-Stereo produces two-channel pictureswith blend, without intermediateinterfaces.

ECR: Extended Contrast RatioDark night scenes typically deliver videosignals with reduced dynamic rangeand limited contrast.

By electronically enhancing these videosignals and dimming to rescale to fulldynamic range, Barco’s ECR greatlyimproves the contrast ratio and picturequality.

ESEM: Electronic Soft Edge MatchingIn multi-channel setups, the non-zeroblack level of light valve projectorsnormally leads to brighter overlap zones, especially in night scenes. Barco’sstandard ESEM technology allows you toadjust edge blending without black-levelcorrection on all Barco simulationprojectors.

OSEM: Optical Soft Edge MatchingWith Barco’s proprietary OSEM, blendingfilters in the optical path maintain theblack level in the overlap zone to that ofthe separate images. This results in aseamless image with invisible blends, also in night sceneries, with completecontrol over the full dynamic range.

Raster/ Calligraphic MRPsare proven and used on FAA level Dsimulators, while the Raster MRP hasbeen approved for FAA level C.
