For Communication and Recording

Audio Gear Time!

Audio Gear

1.Mic on Your Computer. CRAPPY.

Problems: noisy, computer noise like your fan and typing, too much distance between you and microphone

Audio Gear

2.Earbuds with a Microphone. Still pretty crappy.

Advantages: Closer to your mouth, less noiseProblems: Rubbing on clothes, getting out of place

$20-$30

Audio Gear

3.USB Headsets. Now we’re talkin’.

Advantages: Optimal mic placement, low noise, “not-bad” audio, really easy to use.

$30-$50

Audio Gear

4.USB Microphones. Even better audio.

Tips on Recording Audio

Record in a quiet space.

● Small rooms

● Carpet

● Lots of stuff in the room

● Closed door

● Use heavy blankets or cheap

soundproofing

Place the microphone close to your mouth.

● 2-5 inches. No closer, not much further

Don’t hold the microphone.

● Use a mic stand or tripod.● Holding it creates “handling noise”● NA to headsets

Use a windscreen (pop filter)

● Prevents “pops”● Can’t use on USB headsets● Zooms come with one

Don’t turn papers, make noise

● Good mics will pick it all up

● Turning papers, hitting the table, etc.

● Start part over if you do make noise

while talking

● Noise in-between talking can be edited

out

Keep it smooth and natural.

● You might need to slow down.

● Test, listen, adjust energy.

● Breathe.

Start and stop clean.

● Complete sentences and phrases● Redo as needed

Don’t worry about screwing up.

● You can edit later.

Clean it Up

Editing Audio

What is Editing?

1.Done after you record.

2.Deleting parts.

3.Cutting/Pasting sections (arranging)

4. Improving audio quality (advanced)

You don’t have to edit.

● But it can be helpful

● If you don’t edit, just grab the file and

use it as needed

Editing Programs

Lots to choose from.

1.Audacity. Free, Mac and PC. 2.GarageBand. Mac only. 3.Screenflow. Mac only. Video and Audio.
