So: All affirmative (+) regular verbs have the same past
ending -ed. If the verb ends in -e, just add -d. Rescue If the verb ends in -y, and if before -y is a
consonant, change the -y to -i and then add -ed.
Study : Studied
Empty : Emptied
Rescued, Receive Received
Play : played
Stay : Stayed
Irregular verbs have different past forms:
Get : Got
Become : Became
Ride : Rode
Write : Wrote
Negative (-) form:
Sam studied for the test:
Sam didn’t study for the test.
We went to the movies after all:
We didn’t go to the movies after all.
We played soccer:
We didn’t play soccer.
She was a writer:
She wasn’t a writer.
Negative (-) form:
They were happy:
They weren’t happy.
You were at the movie.
You weren’t the at movie.
Questions with
What, When, Where, Who, and Why:
What :
She used the computer. (change it to question form)
1. Did she use the computer?(add What at the beginning)
2. What did she use? (do not write object )
She used the computer.
When :
I saw her last week. (change it to question form)
1. Did you see her last week? (add when at the beginning )
2. When did you see her? (do not write time)
I saw her last week.
Where :
She was in her bedroom. (change it to question form)
1. Was she in her bedroom? (add where at the beginning )
2. Where was she? (do not write place)
She was in her bedroom.
Who : I e-mailed Sara. (change it to question form)
1. Did you e-mail Sara? ( omit Sara & add who)
2. Who did you e-mail?
I emailed Sara.
Why : She left early . (change it to question form)
1. Did she leave early? (add why at the beginning )
2. Why did she leave early?
She left early because her mother called her.
Let’s Review Say in Negative Form:
Sara won a lottery.
1. Sara didn’t win a lottery.
Jack spilled soda on the keyboard.
3. Jack didn’t spill soda on the keyboard.
They were singing.

Make question: She practiced the guitar. ( What )

Make question: Sue couldn’t solve the problem because it was too
difficult.

So:
Past describes a single, completed action at a
particular time in the past.
It often appears with words that signal the
past, such as yesterday, Last week, and ago.
It also appears with specific times and dates.
After, ago, at 3:45, in 2004, in the morning, last
year, yesterday.
Rosa sent the letter four days ago.
Marco received it at 2:30 in the afternoon.
I met my friend yesterday.
I studied in the morning.
