'Getting to grips with the SATs'
Year 6 SATs Meeting for Parents/Carers2016
The tests...
English tests - Reading and SPaG (2 papers - 1 for spelling and 1 for grammar, punctuation and vocabulary)
Maths tests- Arithmetic test and 2 written 'reasoning' papers
Writing is teacher assessed
There are NO levels (scores based on new end of year expectations)
The Reading Test• 1 test paper• 60 minutes (including 15 minutes reading
time)• Texts and questions increase in terms of
difficulty as children move through the test• Tests a range of reading skills but majority of
marks come from retrieval and inference
The SPAG Tests
2 test papers - Spelling & Grammar, Punctuation and Vocabulary
The test covers all areas although grammar carries the heavier weighting in terms of marks available
Questions increase in difficulty as children progress through the test
Spelling accounts for almost 30% of the final score
Maths Tests
3 test papers
Arithmetic paper - written methods (30 minutes)
2 reasoning papers (40 minutes each)
Raised expectations with a focus on number and formal written methods (long multiplication and division)

How can you help?
Attendance
Punctuality (8.45am Year 6 door opens)
As much sleep (plus water & brain food!) as possible
Read (anything and everything!) & ask children questions to check understanding
Question them about maths as often as possible (time, money, converting measures etc)
Revise times tables and spellings as often as possible
Complete all revision and homework activities
Homework/Revision
Complete one page from an English book and a Maths book (from 'freebie' folder) EVERY night
Ask for help
Additional homework may be sent home (including practice papers over holiday periods)
Books to come into school each Friday
Prizes will be given when books are completed
