IMPORTANT

When carrying out commissioning of the boiler, you are highly recommended to perform the following checks:

– Make sure that there are no liquids or inflammable materials in the immediate vicinity of the boiler.

– Make sure that the electrical connections have been made correctly and that the earth wire is connected to a

good earthing system.

– Open the gas tap and check the soundness of the connections, including that of the burner.

– Make sure that the boiler is set for operation for the type of gas supplied.

– Check that the flue pipe for the outlet of the products of the combustion is unobstructed.

– Make sure that any shutoff valves are open.

– Make sure that the system is charged with water and is thoroughly vented.

– Check that the circulating pump is not locked.

– Purge the system, bleeding off the air present in the gas pipe by operating the pressure relief valve on the gas

valve inlet.

1 DESCRIPTION OF THE BOILER

1.1 INTRODUCTION

The new series of “RX” gas-fired hea-ting boilers has been designed andmanufactured to ensure maximumuser-friendliness and to ease both theinstallation and the maintenance ope-rations for the installer. They comply with the european directi-

ves 90/396/CEE, 89/336/CEE,92/42/CEE, 73/23/CEE and theeuropen specification EN 297. These appliances can be fired by natu-ral gas (methane) and butane gas(G30) or propane gas (G31). This manual contains the instructionsfor the following boiler models:– “RX 19÷55 CE IONO” with electro-

nic ignition and flame ionization– “RX 19-26 PVA CE IONO” with

pump, expansion vessel, electronicignition and flame ionization.

The instructions given in this manualare provided to ensure proper installa-tion and perfect operation of theappliance.

The boiler should be installed in a fixedlocation and shall be carried out only byspecialized and qualified firms in com-pliance with all instructions containedin this manual.

2.1 BOILER ROOMAND VENTILATION

There are no particular regulations tofollow with reference to the boilerroom because “RX 19-26” boilers,which do not exceed the 35 kW limit,can be installed in rooms that are suf-ficiently ventilated. The rooms where the gas-firedsystems are installed must receive atleast the quantity of air necessary forthe normal combustion of the gas used

by the various installations. Therefore, to ensure the air circulationin the rooms, it is necessary to makesome holes in the walls. These holes must have the followingcharacteristics:– Have e total free surface of mini-

mum 6 cm2 for each kW of thermalcapacity, for a minimum of 100 cm2.

– They must be located as close aspossible to floor level, not prone toobstruction and protected by agrid which does not reduce theeffective section required for thepassage of air.

The “RX 37÷55” models with a capa-city exceeding 35 kW shall instead beinstalled in a boiler room that meetsthe existing safety regulations for

network gas-fired heating systems,where minimum distances must beobserved.

2.2 BOILER CONNECTION

Before connecting the boiler circulatesome water in the pipes to eliminateany foreign bodies which may preventthe equipment from working properly. When making the hydraulic connec-tions, follow the instructions of fig. 1carefully. Connections shall be easily disconnec-ted by means of unions with revolvingfittings. It is always advisable to mountsuitable interception gate valves on theC.H. flow and C.H. return plant pipes.The gas connection must be made

using seamless steel pipe(Mannesmann type), galvanized andwith threaded joints provided withgaskets, excluding three-piece connec-tions, except for initial and end connec-tions. Where the piping has to passthrough walls, a suitable insulatingsleeve must be provided. When sizing gas piping, from themeter to the boiler, take into accountboth the volume flow rates (consump-tion) in m3/h and the relative density ofthe gas in question. The sections of the piping making upthe system must be such as to gua-rantee a supply of gas sufficient tocover the maximum demand, limitingpressure loss between the gas meterand any apparatus being used to notgreater than:– 1.0 mbar for family II gases (natural

gas);– 2.0 mbar for family III gases (butane

or propane).

An adhesive data plate is sticked insidethe front panel; it contains all the tech-nical data identifying the boiler and thetype of gas for which the boiler isarranged.

2.2.1 Filter on the gas pipe

The gas valve is supplied ex factorywith an inlet filter, which, however, isnot adequate to entrap all the impuri-ties in the gas or in gas main pipes.To prevent malfunctioning of the valve,or in certain cases even to cut out thesafety device with which the valve isequipped, install an adequate filter onthe gas pipe.

2.3 CHARACTERISTICS OF FEEDWATER

It is absolutely essential that the waterfor the central heating system is to betreated in the following cases:– Very extensive system (with high

contents of feedwater).– Frequent addition of makeup water

into the system.– Should it be necessary to empty the

system either partially or totally.

2.4 SYSTEM FILLING

The filling shall be made slowly so thatair bubles are eliminated through thevents. The charge pressure, with thesystem cold, must between 1 and 1,2

bar. The system loading pipe can beconnected with the 1/2” coupling onthe back header or, on the “PVA”models, on the cross coupling connec-ted to the expansion tank.

2.5 FLUE

A flue for the discharge into the atmo-sphere of the products of combustionof natural draught plants must havethe following characteristics:– be sealed against the products of

combustion, waterproof and insu-lated;

– be made of materials capable ofwithstanding normal mechanicalstresses, heat and the action of theproducts of combustion and theircondensate;

– be vertical and with no narrowingthroughout its whole length;

– be properly insulated to avoid fluegases condensing or cooling, espe-cially if it is placed outside a buildingor in rooms with no heating;

– be kept at a safe distance from com-bustible and easily inflammablematerials by an air space or anyother suitable insulating material;

– have a chamber collecting solidmaterials and condensates belowthe mouth of the first flue; thischamber must be at least 500 mmhigh. Access to this chamber mustbe ensured through a hole with anairtight metal door;

– its inner section must be round, squa-re or rectangular; if it is square ofrectangular, the corners must beround and have a radius of 20 mmminimum; however, hydraulically equi-valent sections are also permitted;

– be topped by a chimneypot having itsoutlet outside the reflux area inorder to avoid back pressures whichmay obstruct the free discharge of

flue gas into the air;– there must be no mechanical suc-

tion equipment at the top of the pipe;– there must be no overpressure in

stacks placed inside or adjacent toinhabited rooms.

2.5.1 Flue connection

Fig. 3 refers to the boiler connectionto the flue or to the stack through flueducts. In making the connection obser-ve the dimensions given and use sea-ling materials capable of withstandingmechanical stresses and flue heatover time. At any point of the flue the burnt gastemperature shall not exceed the dewpoint temperature. Maximum threechanges of direction can be made,including the union to the stack/flue. For changes of direction, use only cur-ved components.

2.6 ELECTRIC CONNECTION

The boiler is equipped with an electriccable with plug and shall be suppliedwith 230 V - 50 Hz single-phase cur-rent through a fuse protected switchhaving a minimum distance of 3 mmbetween the pins. The room thermostat (class II accor-ding to EN 60730.1), which should beinstalled to ensure a good temperatu-re control, must be connected to ter-minals 1 and 4 after the existing brid-ge has been removed.

NOTA: Device must be connected toan efficient eathing system. SIMErefuses all responsibility for damageto people or things due to non-earthing of the boiler. Always turn offthe power supply before doing anywork on the electrical panel.

2.6.1 Wiring diagram

3.1 ELECTRONIC IGNITION

The boilers are equipped with electro-nic ignition without pilot flame; they aretherefore equipped with an electriccontrol and protection device. An elec-tronic programmer, model Brahma FM11, controls the ignition and the ionisa-tion by means of two electrodes asshown in fig. 5. Maximum safety is garanteed becausein case of accidental extinction of theburner the gas flow is stopped within 1second. A reference mark made onthe burner ensures the proper applica-tion of the ignition electrode.

3.1.1 Working cycle

Before lighting the boiler check with avoltmeter that the electric connectionto the terminal board has been pro-perly made observing the phase andneutral positions of the wiring diagram.Press the main switch on the control

board; the lamp will light if there ispower. At this stage the boiler will startto work sending, via the FM 11 pro-grammer, a discharge current to theelectrode and, at the same time, ope-ning the gas valve. Normally the burnertakes 1 or 2 seconds to light. It may however fail to light, in whichcase the boiler lock-out lamp will beactivated. The main causes maybe:

– No gas supplyThe equipment performs regularlysending voltage to the ignition elec-trode that continues to spark for max.10 seconds, without detecting theburner starting, then it shuts down.

It may occur at the first starting orwhen the boiler has not been usedfor a long period of time and there is

air in the pipes. It may occur if thegas cock is closed or if the winding ofone of the valve coils is interrupted,thus preventing it from opening.

– There is no sparkIn the boiler you will only notice thegas flow to the burner, after 10seconds it shuts down.

It may be due to the fact that the elec-trode cable is disconnected or is notproperly fixed to the terminal 10; orthe equipment transformer is burnt.

– No ionisationFrom the time of the starting youcan observe the electrode continuossparking even if the burner is on.After 10 seconds the sparking stopsand so does the burner, while thelock-out lamp appears to be on.

It occurs if the phase and neutral posi-tion on the terminal board has notbeen observed. The detection electro-de cable is disconnected or the elec-trode itself is earthed; the electrode isvery worn-out and needs replacing.

The sudden lack of voltage causes theimmediate shutdown of the burner andwhen the voltage is restored the boilerwill automatically restart.

3.1.2 Ionization circuit

The ionization circuit shall be checkedwith a normal microammeter, or evenbetter, with a digital microammeterwith a 0÷50 µA range. The microam-meter terminals shall be electricallyconnected in series to the ionisationelectrode cable. Under standard con-ditions the value varies from 4÷6 µA.The minimum ionization current value,

at which the equipment may shutdown, is approximately 1 µA. In thiscase it will be necessary to check thatthere is a good electric contact and tocheck the wear of the electrode tip andof its ceramic protection.

3.2 SMOKE SAFETY DEVICE

The smoke stat provides a protectionagainst the discharge of flue gas intothe atmophere (3 fig. 2).This controldevice stops the gas valve if the fluegas is descharged into the boiler roomis continuous way and in such quanti-ties as to become dangerous. To start the boiler again, switch off thepower, then remove the smoke statcover and reset the button below. If the thermostat continues to trip off,it will be necessary to check the fluethoroughly, making all the necessarychanges to ensure it works properly.

On the “RX 37÷55” models, the smokestat capillary on the back of the boiler shallbe put into the 12.5 ø hole of the drought-diverter support bracket and fixed to itwith the fitting and the M12 lock nutalready mounted on the capillary (fig. 6).

3.3 SAFETY STAT

In case the boiler temperatureexceeds 95°C the safety stat (6 fig. 2),will extinguish the pilot burner thusshutting off the gas flow to the pilotand main burner. “RX 19-26” modelsare equipped with safety stat withautomatic resetting, and “RX 37÷55”with manual resetting. Should the statwith manual resetting trip off, it will benecessary to unscrew the cover andreset the button below for the pilot bur-ner to restart.

3.4 CIRCULATING PUMP PERFORMANCE CURVES

The “RX PVA” boilers can be equippedwith either EURAMO NYL 40/25 orGRUNDFOS UPS 25/50 circulatingpumps. Both have a built-in speed selec-tor for adjusting head and capacity.Head and capacity performance curvesof the standard circulating pump, at dif-ferent speeds, are given in fig. 7-8.

NOTE: Before starting the boilercheck that the circulating pump isnot locked.

4.1 ADJUSTING GAS VALVE “19-26” VERSIONS

Standard “RX 19-26” boilers with elec-tronic ignition feature a SIT 830 TAN-DEM gas valve (fig. 9). When the boileris ignited for the first time, it is alwaysbetter to purge the pipe through thepressure tap (3). Remove the plug onthe pressure regulator (4) to adjustthe main burner gas pressure. The regulation is made by rotating thescrew under the plug: rotate the screwclockwise to increase the pressure,anticlockwise to reduce it. The valvecan control a “soft” ignition of the boilerthrough the screw (1). Rotate thescrew anticlockwise to increase theburner “soft” ignition pressure (STEP),clockwise to reduce it. The optimum“soft” ignition values of the burnerdepend on the type of gas:– Methane 3 - 4 mbar– Butane 6 - 7 mbar– Propane 6 - 7 mbar

4.2 ADJUSTING GAS VALVE “RX 37÷55” VERSIONS

The electronically ignited “RX 37÷55”boilers are equipped with theHONEYWELL VR4605C gas valve (fig.10). When igniting the boiler for the firsttime, it is always advisable to purge thepipe by opening the inlet pressure tap(3). To adjust gas pressure to the mainburner remove the plug on the pressu-re regulator (5). Use a screwdriver to regulate thescrew under the plug: to increase pres-sure screw clockwise, to reduce itscrew counterclockwise.

4.3 ADJUSTING THE GAS PRESSURE TO BURNERS

Pressure calibration and gas input arecarried out by the manufacturer. During installation of the equipment,feed pressure might be different fromstandard values. It is therefore necessary to checkpressure and gas input when ignitingthe boiler for the first time. This test should be performed with theboiler in full operation (obviously noother gas appliances should beworking at the same time). Read thegas meter twice every 6 minutes.Multiply the consumption by ten to cal-culate the consumption per hour. If this value does not correspond to theone in point 1.3, turn the screw of the

pressure regulator on the valve untilthe exact value is obtained. Screwslowly and gradually. Read the gasmeter at least thirty seconds afterregulating the pressure.

4.4 GAS CONVERSION

A kit is supplied complete with thenecessary change-over materials foroperation with butane gas (G30) orpropane gas (G31). Operate in the fol-lowing manner for changing over fromone gas to another:– Replace the main nozzles and pilot

nozzle supplied in a kit.– Remove the plug on pressure regu-

lator and t ighten the adjustingscrew (4 fig. 9 - 5 fig. 10).

– Appy the adaptor outothe gas valve

(6 fig. 10).– Set valve input pressure at 30/37

mbar according to the type of gasby acting on the outer pressurereducer.

– When the working pressures havebeen adjusted, reseal the regula-tors.

– After have ultimated the conversionof the boiler, please stick onto thecasing panel the plate showing therelevant feeding gas which is inclu-ded into the kit.

NOTE: After assembling all the gasconnections, a test for gas tightnessmust be carried out using soapy wateror special products. Do not use nakedflames. The conversion to differentgas must be carried out exclusively byauthorized technical personnel.

4.5 REMOVING THE CASING

It is possible to completely disassemblethe shell for an easy maintenance ofthe boiler following these simpleinstructions:– Remove the boiler top which is fixed

with pressure plugs.– Remove the panelboard.– To remove the door, unscrew com-

pletely the screw fixing the top hingeand lift the door, removing it fromthe fixed plug of the bottom hinge.

– Remove front and back panels by loo-sening the four nuts which fix themto the panels side.

– Remove the sides.

4.6 CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

When the heating is turned off at theend of the season, it is compulsory tocheck the boiler and clean it as follows:– Take off the boiler top.– Remove the smoke chamber cleaning

plate by unscrewing the fasteningscrews in the “RX 19-26” boilers.

– Remove the smoke chamber comple-tely unscrewing the two nuts fromthe back side and the nut from thefront side of “RX 37÷55” boilers.

– Extract the burner assembly byunscrewing the four screws whichfix it to the valve flange.

– With the appropriate brush, reachdown to the rows of plugs of the castiron exchanger from the top andscrape off any scale with verticalmovements.

– Remove the burners from the nozzle

holder header and throw a jet of airinside them so that any dust can beremoved. Make sure that the topdrilled part of the burners has noscale left.

– When disassembling and reassem-bling the burners be careful not toforce any delicate parts, such as thethermocouple drill or the ignition unit.

– Scrape off any scale from the boilerbottom and reassemble all the partschecking the position of the gaskets.

– Check the stack making sure the flueis clean.

– Check the correct operation of theequipment.

After assembling all the gas connec-tions, a test for gas tightness must becarried out using soapy water or spe-cial products. Do not use naked flames.

Maintenance and check of equipmentand safety devices should be carriedout at the end of each season only byauthorized technical personel.

4.7 FAULT FINDING

The burner does not ignite.– This means that the flue smoke stat

has tripped off (point 3.2)– Make sure power arrives to the gas

valve.– Replace the electric operator of the

valve. – Replace the valve.

The boiler reaches the set temperatu-re, but the radiators do not heat up.– Make sure there are no air bubbles

in the system, if so purge from

appropriate air vents.– The room stat is too low or must be

replaced if faulty.– The connections of the room stat

are not correct. Make sure thecables are placed on terminals 1and 4 of the boiler terminal board.

– The circulation pump is blocked,unblock it.

– The electric winding of the circulationpump is faulty, replace the pump.

The boiler pressure relief valve opensoften.– Make sure the system cold water

pressure is not too high, follow thesuggested values.

– If the pressure relief valve is faulty,replace it.

– Check pre-load pressure of theexpansion tank.

– Replace the expansion tank if faulty.

The boiler gets dirty easily causingscaling of cast iron exchanger andcutting off of smoke stat.– Make sure the main burner flame is

well regulated and the gas con-sumption is proportional to the boi-ler output.

– The boiler is installed in a poorly ven-tilated room.

– Insufficient flue draught or not com-plying with existing standards

– The boiler operates at too low tem-peratures, set the boiler stat athigher temperatures.

The thermostat re-ignites with toohigh temperature drop.– Replace the boiler stat which is

faulty.

BOILER IGNITION

To ignite the boilers “RX” it is enough toswitch on the switch (1) to make theboiler operate and begin heating.

ADJUSTMENT OF HEATING TEMPERATURE

The heating temperature can be adju-sted with the stat knob with a rangefrom 45ºC to 85ºC (16 fig. 11). Thetemperature setting can be checkedon the thermometer (5 fig. 11). For analways optimum operation of the boilerwe recommend not to reduce the ope-rating temperature below 60ºC.

LOCK OUT RESET OF THECONTROL BOX

If the burner does not ignite lock-outlamp will be activated (2 fig. 11). Press the resetting button to makethe boiler automatically start.

If, after trying to release the boilertwo or three times, this does notregularly start, call on the authorizedtechnical personel.

SWITCHING OFF THE BOILER

To switch off the boilers “RX” it is enou-gh to turn off the switch (1 fig. 11) toturn off the boiler. Close the gas pipe

WARNINGS

– In case of fault and/or incorrect equipment operation, deactivate it, without making any repairs or taking any direct

action. Contact the nearest Authorised Technical Service Centre.

– The installation of the boiler and any servicing or maintenance job must be carried out by qualified personnel. Under

no circumstances, the devices sealed by the manufacturer can be tampered with.

– It is absolutely prohibited to block the intake grilles and the aeration opening of the room where the equipment is

installed.

cock if you are not going to use the boi-ler for a long time.

SAFETY STAT

“RX 37÷55” models are equipped withsafety stat (6 fig. 11) with manualresetting. In case the boiler tempera-ture exceeds 95°C the safety stat willextinguish the pilot burner thus shut-ting off the gas flow to the pilot andmain burner.Should the stat trip off, it will be neces-sary to unscrew the cover and resetthe button below for the pilot burner torestart (fig. 12).Should the boiler “lock out” again,you must call the authorized techni-cal staff.

SMOKE SAFETY DEVICE

It is a safety device which controls thecorrect discharge of flue gas into theatmophere (3 fig. 11). The control device stops the gas valve ifthe flue gas is descharged into the boi-ler room is continuous way and in suchquantities as to become dangerous.

To start the boiler again, switch offthe power, then remove the smokestat cover and reset the buttonbelow (fig. 12). If the boiler stops again, it will benecessary to call the authorized tech-nical staff.

SYSTEM FILLING

Check periodically that the hydrometer(4 fig. 11) has pressure values at aswitched-off system of 1 - 1,2 bar. If the pressure is less than 1 bar, re-

charge it rotating the knob anti-clock-wise. After the operation check thatthe tap is properly closed.Should the pressure exceed the fore-seen limit, discharge the superfluousamount by operating on the vent knobof any radiator.

GAS CONVERSION

Should a gas other than that for whichthe boiler is equipped be used, the con-version has to be carried out by tech-nical personel authorized by the manu-facturer.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

When the heating is turned off at theend of the season, it is compulsory tocheck the boiler and clean it.

Maintenance and check of equipmentand safety devices shall be carriedout only by authorized technical per-sonel. The boiler is supplied with anelectric cable. Should this requirereplacement, get in touch exclusivelywith the authorized technical staff.
