Dear members
We (the current staff) would like to thank all members for their support, patience and help in moving the club forward. Thanks also to the previous staff for helping to gain a foot-hold on the needs of the club. We now move into the second quarter since taking over the affairs of the club. Hopefully we will enhance the goals of this club.
Recently I made a trip to Reno and paid a visit to Sierra Sid’s Casino. According to the management ,they stated that IGT would not sell the machines to them. Therefore they have placed the strike program on hold until they find out what is happening. It appears that many other casinos are ending their strike program.
Currently the Four Queens Casino is the strongest supporter of the Silver Strikers club and it's programs. It is with great appreciation that people like Shaun Webster continue to keep the program alive with excellent strikes. Many, many thanks to you Shaun.
The good news is that soon there will be a slot tournament that is sponsored by the Four Queens Casino. The Casino will have a two hundred dollar strike and a red cap strike during the tournament. There will also be a quarter pound token that will be given to all participants of the tournament. The design, I understand will be a castle for the four queens. Since the last two hundred was the four ladies, a castle was produced for them.
In addition to the tournament, there will be an open trade session for anyone who wishes to attend. During this session, we (staff) have decided to provide some food and refresh-ments to participants. This session will be held on Saturday

Pete Mackenzie will be taking over the Hall of fame and elections position. Let’s give Pete a warm welcome and all our support in his new position.
In the last SS Club Newsletter it was stated that the club membership would
soon be receiving a post card to vote for a new club secretary. Updates since
the e-mailing & printing of the newsletter with this election notice in it. It has
been determined by the board members and outgoing elections chairperson
that according to the club by-laws, all of the conditions that needed to be met,
have already been met. Therefore a separate post card vote is not needed, thus
saving the club money by not having to do this. It was determined by above said
persons that according to the club by-laws, a new club secretary could be
elected by a majority vote of the board of directors as long as the proper proce-
dures have already been met and done. The club board of directors is planning
a meeting during the January slot tournament to take care of the election of a
secretary and any other Silver Strikers Club business.

Something to Think About...
As we have all been seeing, the Silver Strike machines have been disappearing almost weekly. What can we SS Club members do to try to stop or slow down the disappearance of the SS machines? Simple -- PLAY THE SILVER STRIKE MACHINES STILL IN PLAY. When in Las Vegas or near a casino with SS machine(s), try to allot at least some dollars to play the SS machine there. Even if you do not need the strike for collecting. If a very large number of the SS Club members do this, that will translate into a lot of play on a SS machine. A casino will more likely consider going through the trouble of keeping or reinstalling SS machines. REMEMBER -- NO PLAY NO STAY
Overview
Every Silver Striker eventually asks the question “How can I remove this ton-ing/tarnish/corrosion/foreign substance from my Strike?” A better question to ask – preferably when you first win the Strike – would be “How should I handle and store my Strikes to prevent corrosion from ever taking root in the first place?”
The Threat
Toning/tarnish (basically, Corrosion) can affect the .999 Fine Silver Inserts and the Brass Rims on $10 Strikes, as well as both the Silver and the Gold HGE on the $20s, $40s, $200s, etc. Generally, Corrosion is caused by exposure to Oxygen and Sulfur. Various forms of Sulfur – predominately Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) – are in the air all around us - particularly in Circulating Air. Addition-ally, Sulfur (as well as some Acids) is/are used in almost all paper and card-board products. Factors such as exposure to Moisture/Humidity are simply Accelerants of the process, as water acts as a catalyst for these chemical reac-tions causing Corrosion.
So, how do we avoid the “air”, proximity to paper/cardboard (from which most coin flips, storage boxes, etc. are made), as well as Accelerants such as mois-ture and air flow?
Solutions – Storage Area
First, ensure your storage area is appropriate. That means avoiding Bank Vault Deposit Boxes located underground (a source of dampness) as well as very modern vaults which have “humidifiers” operating to keep paper documents from becoming brittle. Just ask your local bank and inspect the Safety Deposit Vault yourself. At home, if buying a safe, avoid “Fire” Safes – as they contain moisture trapping fire retardant materials in their walls. The same goes for “Gun” Safes.
As for other storage choices, try to stay away from enclosures made of newer wood (sulfur again!) and lean towards chemically inert hard plastics such as, ideally, a giant Tupperware Vault (in a perfect world!)
Solutions – Individual Strikes
Within your vault or enclosure, Strikers tend to go with 2 separate types of storage: Capsule-based and Album-based.

Capsule-Based
For Capsule-based storage, I use a 3-step protection system:
IGT’s Machine-dispensed capsules have a notch which permits entry of gases. Replace them with one of the following products :
For $10 Strikes, there are the two equally effective products:
Coin-Safe Brands’ CS-43mm Capsules: A nice tight fit – just like the “old” IGT capsules (but without a notch). Takes up least amount of space.
AirTite Brands’ X-1.75 Capsules: A wider capsule (still holds Strike steady with internal ridges) meant to fit directly in frames sold by Cassidy Frames, Tiny Treasures, etc. The only choice for frames.
When transferring the Strike from one capsule to the other, use gloves and avoid talking or coughing directly above the Strike. The finger touch or microscopic drop of saliva of today can leave a black spot or pit in 10 years. To remove dust, use a can of compressed air to spray the Strike and new capsule prior to closing.
For $20 and $40 Strikes: Both have the same diameter and fit snug in the AirTite X-1.875 Capsules. These capsules have the same Outer Diameter as the ones for the $10, - mean-ing they fit in the frames as well.
Sealable Poly Bag: Even without a notch, AirTite and Coin-Safe Capsules will let in small amounts of gases over time. Placing each Capsule in a 3”x3” poly Bag with zip-seal (available at JPsCorner.com and other sites) cuts the leakage significantly. Additionally, these bags keep the new Capsules scratch-free.
Protective Corrosion-Proof Boxes: Rather than use an ordinary double-row cardboard box to store these bagged capsules – and re-introduce Sulfur – you have the choice of two new product lines which go a step further and neutralize Sulfurous gases. Both of these box lines have walls made of a copper-based Corrosion-Inhibitor compound. The Sulfur in any air that enters the box im-mediately bonds with the more chemically reactive copper and is neutralized. These boxes should last around 10 years before their shield walls turn color — indicating saturation.
I ssue #49 Page 6 Silver Str ikers Club Ne wslet ter Si lver Str ikers Club Ne wslet ter Intercept Shield markets the IS Single Row 2 x 2 Storage Box, the IS
Double Row 2 x 2 Box and the IS Proof Set Box (a “shoebox” which will hold $200s or other large capsules). Sources: many sites incl. www.telecoins.com, www.amosadvantage.com, etc.
Amos Advantage/Coin World markets the other alternative - the Coin World Anti Corrosive Coin Case. Unfortunately, this product – which is perfect for Strikes (longer, less wasted space) is no longer being sold (temporarily?) as a stand-alone product. Instead, you must select one of the options offered at the AA site: the box with 600 coin mounts for $26.99 or the box w/ 200 SAFLIPS for $29.99 and the list goes on.
Album-Based
Dansco makes a line of albums for $10 Silver Strikes – the Model 7003. These albums hold the Strike (without capsule) in a coin album-style binder of cardboard-like stock pages with 45 Slots and Clear Slides across the Ob-verse and Reverse of the Strike. I would only use this method of storage if you only purchase both of the following optional New Corrosion Inhibitor options:
A Dansco Album Slipcase with inner walls made of the Corrosion-Inhibitor compound mentioned above, and Littleton Anti-Corrosion Coin Album Inserts (same composition) to be added inside the front and back album covers.
I don’t know whether these are as effective as the Capsule-based options as there may be Sulfur in the Dansco pages themselves (I haven’t been able to answer that question).
Certainly there are other options – such as “stick-on” Volatile Corrosion Inhibi-tors (VCIs), Silica packets, etc. – for the inside of large boxes or storage areas. However, the VCI’s, for one, have some drawbacks which have led me to believe the options outlined above to be superior. Nevertheless, any protection is better than none – and my opinions are based only on my somewhat limited experi-ence testing storage products & researching metallurgical references.
Next time I contribute (assuming this article doesn’t prove too controversial!), I will address the question of what SAFE Restoration Options are available for Strikes which already have begun to “turn” and corrode or have foreign sub-stances on their surfaces.

Harrah’s and Harvey’s Lake Tahoe Dilemma
We had a flurry of excitement and good news about Harrah’s and Harvey’s in Lake Tahoe starting a silver strike program. Harrah’s had a G mint $10.00, a RWM mint $40.00, a RWM mint $200.00 all with a Winter related theme. Har-vey’s had the same but with a Poker related theme.
All the excitement and anticipation went sour when, on October 23, it was reported that someone or something had upset the casinos and that they were shutting down the silver strike program as soon as the $40.00s were gone. It was also reported that each casino only had five $200 strikes and all were gone soon after the program started and none would be reordered.
My source for this information is The StrikePoint.com and conversations with several club members. It would be nice to be able to report some good news…..I will be out there looking.

Here comes January, Here comes January, Four Queens Tournament Time.
This year's tournament is once again going to be very eventful. As always there will be lots of friends to see and catch up with, playing for strikes and of course just having a wonderful time. There will also be lots of strike informa-tion to catch up on. There are a lot of things in the works in our striking world and it sounds like lots of good things are coming. Of course the Four Queens with the strike tournament, and new strikes. Slots A Fun will be having strikes, their new $10 red cap should be out sometime in December and I am sure it will be there for us to play for in January plus their new $200 that was approved will be available. The Palms should still have some of their new Playboy available and who knows what other surprises will welcome us to town.
Lots of good rumors for silver strike players.
Palms keeping their strike machine, and more strikes there for the future?
Slots A Fun with 5 strike machines, a new series of red caps, more $200 and maybe a few surprises in the next year.
Sam's Town, a new series in the works.
Strikers are talking with some of the old casinos that had strike machines and some are considering taking another look.
At least 8 casinos in the future with strike machines?
The rumors are all good ones and I am in hopes they will be definite in the future.
It’s time to think positive. Things are starting to settle down, the turn over has taken time, had some problems but all should start working well in the next few months. The Strike Club has a good relationship with many of the casinos and these managers want to run a great strike program. I think once the rest of the casinos see how well a good program works there will be more in the future to follow. I think the mint will start taking a closer look at running a good program that is beneficial to all concerned. Its takes us all, the casino, the mint, tourists and the club to have a great strike program. Wishing every-one a Very Happy New Year and lots of good things for strikers in this next year.

Silver Strikers Club History - 2002 by Mary Lou Waterbury and Jeff Gaffke
The convention was once again held at the Tropicana. The dates were June 5-8th. 2002 was noted for the Silver Strike Tournament at O’Shea’s that did not happen! It was cancelled 10 days before it was to take place.
Milton Sculky, with permission of the Board, got in touch with the Las Vegas Club and organized a trading session for all strikers before the convention. This was a rousing success.
A $5.00 processing fee was voted for all new members received after July 1, 2002. The spouse of a new member would not be charged the $5.00.
The present officers declined to run for another term in 2003. Nominations were taken for new officers for the next year. Don Nesbitt, Jr. was nominated for President. Sharon Pamperin who brought in 23 new members this year was nominated for Secretary. Forms will be sent out at a future date so all can nominate a person of their choice for each of the Chapter Offices.
Peter Van der Kar won the award for the best display at the convention entitled “Happy Days at O’Shea’s.”
We had 469 members by Convention time.
Howard Herz and Kregg L. Herz put out their first Silver Strike catalog.
The Las Vegas Club and the Plaza each put out a strike with the Silver Strike logo.
One of our original Charter members, Brian Bishop died suddenly in July 2002.
Our Membership officer position is so important that we added that responsibility to the lst Vice-president’s job description. Kevin Pyles is the current Membership officer.
Another first: At the CC>CC banquet, Christie Gregory had arranged for 8 tables seating 80 of our members so that we could all sit together. This put us in a great position to begin trading as soon as the banquet and award festivities were over.
Once again the auction was a success.
Hall of Fame winners were: O’Sheas, LV, Donkey/Elephant; Plaza, LV, Silver Strike Chapter; and Aladdin, LV, $28 Taj Mahal.
33 new members were signed up during the convention. Due to our growing membership, prices for rosters were raised to $8 each.
We were all thrilled to learn that the Palms, a new casino in Las Vegas had put in strike machines. They started out with 4 different $10 strikes and one $200 strike.
We voted! Definition of a Silver Strike: A silver strike is defined as only those limited edition to-kens produced under the rules and regulations of IGT (formerly Anchor Gaming) in conjunction with their patented Silver Strike program. This would include all denominations issued in conjunc-tion with the Silver Strike program paid out of the machine or not.
More patriotic theme strikes were continuing.
IGT (International Gaming Technology) introduced the new silver strike machine in September at the 2002 Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas.
Members running for office for 2003 were: Don Nesbitt, Jr., for President, Kevin Pyles for 1st Vice-President , Jerry Weisenbacher for 2nd Vice-president, Ed Ciesla for Treasurer and Sharon Pam-perin for Secretary.
To be continued……..
