Katalin SchaferKatalin SchaferI was born as the third child of a Hun-

garian family. Surprising my parents right at the beginning, as they were expecting a boy. From a very young age I loved to be in the centre of attention, I liked act-ing, singing, dancing and being naughty. That>s why my sister took me to a bal-let school, hoping that they can provide me with a strong base for my ambitions. As the years went by, my curious nature has not changed at all! I have studied different styles, such as: jazz and latin dances. When I was eighteen, I have come across belly dancing in Hungary. Six months later I have accomplished Raquia Has-san and Dr. Mo>s masterclass, where I have fallen in love with this style. I have travelled a lot in Egypt and learnt more and more about belly dancing and arabic folklore dances. At the same time I have accomplished a Costume Designer College for my dad urge, who reckoned I should have a «proper job» too. In 2004, three master teachers and I have established a dance company, called Art of Orient. During this time, my experiences in re-gards of directing and choreography have deepened a lot and soon enough, I have established my own dance com-pany with arab boys and hungarian girls. In the same year, I have come second at the Ahlan Wa Sahlan World Competition in Egypt and our oriental dance company has won awards in the best group and choreography category. In this year a long process, a meaning-ful journey has begun that has effected my life on both professional and spiritual levels. I wanted to discover why I have

Page 5: Silkroad

5

chosen this path for myself, this ver-feminine style even though in my person-al life, I was a bit of a tom boy. Perhaps my wide range of interest has motivated me to create my very unique, personal style. If I had to name the style I repre-sent, I would call it Oriental Jazz, as it moves from classic music, through folk-lore to oriental cabaret. It took me a long time to accept that I didn>t need to be an arabic princess, for I am Katalin Schafer, my unique self!

I believe that movement has its own language, that is the most honest in the world. Often, the way we move, tells things about us that we, ourselves may not even be aware of. I am aiming to bring these hidden things to the surface when I dance, to make the act deeper and more meaningful. My goal is to share this per-spective, self-awareness and spiritual growth with my students.

Elianae Stone is not a stranger to belly dance, nor to the Northeast Ohio dance community. She has, though, recently relocated from Columbus to Cleveland and has immersed herself in the local dance community.Elianae studied ballet, jazz, modern, lyrical, Afro-Caribbean, and other styles of dance as a kid. she was in the pre-professional program at Ballet Met Columbus, and studied as a dance major at Jacksonville University. In her early ٢٠’s, she took a break from dance to pursue other things, and during that break, she came across belly dance. She later started taking classes from Habeeba’s Dance of the Arts in Columbus, and really fell in love with Classic Cabaret belly dance at that time. She studied there for about ٨ years, becoming an Instructor for ٤ years. She also likes Egyptian greats like Fifi Abdo, Samia Gamal andTahiya Karioka. She values any dancer with commitment to their craft.Elianae is an American Cabaret Dancer, even though that term is ever-evolving. Many Cabaret dancers employ much more ballet/modern/fusion technique into their dancing than even ١٥ years ago, adding high kicks, arabesques, attitudes, and other more recent evolutions. She dabbed in Tribal and Egyptian, and still would like to broaden her horizons with folkloric.

I wascontestant, whose family was from Jordan, did the belly dance. I washooked! When I started dancing, cabaret was really the only style for stage performing and most private engage-ments. I still prefer it. Performances used to be much longer than they are today. I still prefer to dance tolive music, though it is not so easy to find. I adore dancing with the veil, play the zills; and often dance with 2 -3 swords. I have been teaching belly dance for the University of Cincinnati for about 8 years. Also I teach classes and private lessons in my own studio; and do a lot of special workshops, too.I just taught a Sword Work-shop; have a double Sword Workshop coming up; additional specialty workshops starting in January. Also, often, groups ask me to teach a course at their location. Most of students learn the dance to have fun as they get into shape. Some students have become performers. I was so humbled to teach belly dancing to members of Ireland’s touring RIVERDANCE Ensemble.
