Silicone Suspension/TensionInsulator 120kN
CABLE SYSTEMS FOR ENERGY & ROLLING STOCK APPLICATIONS
MV Silicone Tension Insulators
The high tensile strength of glass fibrehas been combined with our HV shedprofile, to produce this rugged, light-weight tension insulator for overheadline applications up to LIWV (BIL) rating of 450kV
The glass fibre core provides highmechanical strength with tensile valuesof greater than 120kN. TE’s siliconeinsulator profile utilises similar designs, materials, technology and know howthat has been employed for nearly 40 years in the Raychem, BowthorpeEMP and Axicom medium and highvoltage insulator product portfolios.
Silicone is a hydrophobic material witha performance today of both proventracking and erosion resistance andUV stability that gives a good balanceof technical performance in a widerange of climatic and pollution condi-tions.
The construction consists of TE compact creepage design insulatorprofile which have the same diametersheds in order to maximise flashoverperformance in polluted environmentsover a minimum insulator length.
Benefits and Key Features
• TE Connectivity Know how• TE Connectivity branded, contract
manufactured• 120kN Tension rating (SML)• Interchangeable metal end fitting
selection• Reliable tensile performance• Light weight for easier installation• Silicone housing has excellent
hydrophobic properties• Shed design to minimize insulator
length per kV rating• Shock and vibration resistant,• Good tracking and erosion resistance
performance• Maintenance free• Tested in accordance to IEC61109 &
IEC62217• Quality design and manufacture to
ISO9001
Excellent Hydrophobic Properties
The hydrophobic silicone housing ismoulded directly over the glass fibrerod and an erosion resistant sealant is used between the end fitting andsilicone to give a moisture resistantbarrier.
The hot dip galvanised steel end fittingsare crimped onto the glass fibre coreproviding high strength corrosionresistant fixing points.

Insulator Considerations
TE Connectivity 120kN SiliconeSuspension / Tension insulator rangeis designed for 6 different metal endfittings, each of which can be selectedwith any other to make any combina-tion required.
The overall total insulator length willvary dependant upon the metal endfitting selections.
Metal End Fitting Selection
Choose any combination or orientation, between the seven below metal endfittings and from the table overleafnote the specific characteristics ofeach end fitting you have selected.

Electrical Properties Selection
Select either the operating voltage orthe LIWV (BIL) rating from the belowchart, read off the creepage distanceand compare this value with your mini-mum creepage requirement for yourapplication. If the creepage value is lessthan your minimum requirement thensearch down the creepage column untilyou either exceed or get very close toyour actual minimum creepage require-ment. Read off the shed number andverify all electrical parameters on theselected row meets the electrical insulation needs.
Alternatively cross reference the Lightning Impulse Withstand Voltage (LIWV)kV peak rating chart below, to determine minimum system voltage and thentake into account your pollution / creepage considerations.

Specifying and Naming Convention
Specifying Silicone Tension / Suspension InsulatorsTo specify the correct insulator, it is necessary to define the following characteristics:• Specified mechanical load (SML) [kN]• Operating Voltage and or LIWV (BIL) [kV] • Nominal Creepage Distance [mm]• Metal End Fittings or couplings
Designation of Silicone Tension / Suspension InsulatorsIn accordance with IEC 61466-1, composite tension insulators are assigned a reference designation which indicates:• Insulator type• Mechanical strength• Metal End Fitting type
Requirement designation examples:1) CS 120 S16 B16 2) CS 120 T16N C16N Where:CS = Composite longrod insulator120 = 120kN specified mechanical loadS16 = Top end Socket fitting, according toIEC 120, size 16B16 = Bottom end Ball fitting, according toIEC 120, size 16T16N = Top end Tongue fitting, according toIEC 61466-1, size 16NC16N = Bottom end Clevis fitting, accordingto IEC 61466-1, size 16N

Insulator Configuration
Overall Tension Insulator Dimensioning
Choose any combination or orientation, between the seven metal end fittings from the table above noting the specificcharacteristics of each end fitting selected and simply add the respective selected measurements to determine the overall length and the operating length
Example 1: (Operating length)11 Shed Socket & Ball = (11 Shed = 310mm) (Ball = 100mm) (Socket = 103mm) therefore, 310+100+103 = operating length 513mm
Example 2: (Total length)7 shed Tongue & Clevis = (7 shed = 206mm) (Tongue = 129.5mm) (Clevis = 132mm)therefore, 206+129.5+132 = total length 467.5mm
