Vol. 17 No. 4 December 2012 SIIT Co-organized the 5 th International Conference of the Asian Concrete Federation In celebration of the 20 th anniversary of Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), SIIT co-organized the 5 th International Conference of the Asian Concrete Federation (ACF2012) with Thailand Concrete Association (TCA) and the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University. The conference was held during October 24-26, 2012 at Amari Orchid Pattaya, Chon Buri Province, Thailand. Prof. Dr. Somnuk Tangtermsirikul, Director of SIIT, was the chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee and Dr. Pakawat Sancharoen, a researcher at the Construction and Maintenance Technology Research Center (CONTEC), SIIT, was a Co-Secretary of the conference. The ACF Conferences have been held every 2 years since 2004 in various Asian countries. The main theme of the 5 th ACF International Conference was “Novel Concrete Technology for Environmentalism- conscious Design, Materials, Construction and Maintenance.” In the Keynote Paper Session, five invited distinguished speakers from Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan R.O.C., and Thailand presented their papers on the topic of “Experiences, preventions, and post-management of natural and man-made disasters.” In total, 110 papers from 12 different countries/regions were presented in 14 parallel sessions. The number of participants was approximately 180 persons. As a part of the conference, the Asian Concrete Federation (ACF) Executive Committee Meeting was held on October 23, 2012. Prof. Dr. Somnuk Tangtermsirikul, who is the Vice President (Technical) of the Asian Concrete Federation and President of the Thailand Concrete Association, attended the meeting. SIIT Co-organized the 5th International Conference of theAsian Concrete Federation

The 9th International Symposium on Advancement of Cement andConcrete Industries

Prof. Dr. Somnuk Tangtermsirikul (SIIT Director)was invited by the Korean Concrete Institute (KCI)to give a special lecture at the 9th InternationalSymposium on Advancement of Cement andConcrete Industries, South Korea, duringNovember 18-20, 2012, on a topic entitled“Concrete Practices for Sustainable Developmentin Thailand.” The symposium is annually held tointroduce new innovations and practices bothlocally and internationally to the Koreanprofessional engineers in the cement and concreteindustries.

Closing Seminar of Business Matching and Networkingbetween Thailand and BRICs (India)

The Transportation Research Center (TREC) at SIIT organized a closing seminar to conclude the results of the researchproject entitled “Business Matching and Networking between Thailand – BRICs (India).” The seminar was held at WinsorSuites Hotel, Sukhumvit 20, Bangkok, on December 4, 2012. Over 200 SMEs entrepreneurs attended this closing seminar. Atthe seminar, Asst. Prof. Dr. Veeris Ammarapala (Assistant Director for Student Affairs and Alumni Relations, SIIT) and Asst.Prof. Dr. Suthathip Suanmali (a faculty member of the School of Management Technology, MT) presented research results tothe participants who are Thai SMEs.

The research study focused on three main elements: (1) assessment of the market potential for Thai SMEs in India, (2)examination of the options to better connect Thai SMEs to international market in India, and (3) review of specific measures,such as FTA, to facilitate the access of Thai SMEs to this market. TREC researchers and sixteen Thai SMEs entrepreneursfrom selected industries joined the business matching and networking events in New Delhi, India, during November 18-21,2012.

Four SMI Executives including Mr. Manapol Poosomboon (Vice Chairman of F.T.I. and Chairman of the Board of ExecutiveDirectors of SMI), Mr. Isares Ratanadilok Na Phuket (Deputy Secretary General of Industrial Section of SMI), Mr. NarongritPanichewa, Chairman of Pathum Thani Chapter, F.T.I.), and Ms. Paiyada Hanchaisuksakul (Director of SMI) visited SIIT,Rangsit Campus, on November 7, 2012, to express their congratulations to the Director of SIIT and discuss about the academicmatters and possible collaborations between SIIT and SMI, F.T.I.

Asian Conference on Information Systems(ACIS 2012)

The School of Information, Computer, and Communication Technology (ICT) arranged a special session on “Service Sciences”at the Asian Conference on Information Systems (ACIS 2012) during December 6-8, 2012, in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Duringthe conference, SIIT faculty and staff members met with Prof. Phal Des, a Vice Rector of Royal University of Phnom Penh,Cambodia, discussing future collaborations including scholarships for graduate students to study at SIIT. This meeting was a

successful first step towards academic and research collaborationsas well as promoting the SIIT graduate scholarships amongCambodian students to pursue their graduate study at SIIT. In addition,the School of ICT will host the next ACIS Conference (ACIS 2013)during October 31 - November 2, 2013, in Thailand.

MT Faculty Member and Students Received the Best Paper Award at theWorld Business Research International Conference

Asst. Prof. Dr. Suthathip Suanmali, Ms. Sureerat Niyomsinth, and Ms. Rawisara Thalaengkij (all from the School of ManagementTechnology (MT)), and Dr. Karnjana Sanglimsuwan (Bangkok University) received the “Best Paper Award” at the WorldBusiness Research International Conference, which was organized by the World Business Institute during October 4-6, 2012,at Novotel Bangkok Siam Square, Thailand. The paper entitled “The Export Growth and Revealed Comparative Advantage ofThailand to India’s Construction Industry” was selected as the best paper in the conference’s Economics track. The paperpresents the comparative advantages of Thailand’s construction product exports. It analyzes the industry performancebefore the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Thailand and India (1999-2003)and after FTA (2007-2011) based on the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA)value. The results suggested that Thailand has a high degree of comparativeadvantages in the construction product market, especially, in particle board andsimilar wood, or other ligneous materials (HS Code-4410), andarticles of plaster or of compositions based on plaster (HS Code-6809). SIIT Team Received Grant for Development of Technology forDecentralized Wastewater Treatment System

In many developing countries, poor sanitation is a major problem, leading to water borne diseases. A team of SIIT researcherswere sub-contracted by the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) as a part of the Global Development Grant awarded by the Bill& Melinda Gates Foundation to AIT. This grant was for reinventing the innovative decentralized systems and technologies for

the bottom billion poor. The total project duration was 5 years.The SIIT research team consisted of Assoc. Prof. Dr. RachnarinNitisoravut, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sandhya Babel, Asst. Prof. Dr. SiwaruttBoonyarattanakalin, and Dr. Paiboon Sreearunothai, all from theSchool of Bio-Chemical Engineering and Technology, BCET. Prof.Dr. Chongrak Polprasert, former SIIT Director, also served as aproject advisor. In its first phase, the SIIT research team expectedto develop three new innovative technologies. From the first phase’sbudget of 9 million baht received by the research team, about 2.6million baht were for graduate scholarships.

Faculty Promotion – Associate ProfessorAsst. Prof. Dr. Steven Donald Gordon, a full-time faculty member of the School of Information, Computer, and CommunicationTechnology (ICT), was promoted to the academic rank of Associate Professor in October 2012.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Steven Gordon received his B.Eng. in Computer Systems Engineering, University ofSouth Australia and Ph.D. in Telecommunications, University of South Australia. His research areasinclude Internet technologies, wireless networks, computer security, satellite communications, andPetri nets.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gordon has received funding, jointly with other ICT faculty members, from the Officeof the Higher Education Commission and the Telecommunications Research and Industrial DevelopmentInstitute (TRIDI) to conduct several research projects on telecommunications and the Internet. He iscurrently supervising three Master’s and one doctoral student on research topics related to wirelessnetworking.

Faculty Promotion – Assistant ProfessorDr. Aussadavut Dumrongsiri and Dr. Nattharika Rittippant, full-time faculty members of the School of Management Technology(MT), were promoted to the academic rank of Assistant Professor in October 2012.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Aussadavut Dumrongsiri is currently a coordinator of the Engineering Management (EM) Curriculum. He receivedhis B.E. in Electrical Engineering, Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Michigan State University(USA), M.S. in Industrial and Operations Engineering, University of Michigan (USA), MBA in Finance,Thammasat University (Thailand), and Ph.D. in Business Administration (Operations Management),University of Washington (USA). His research areas include operations management, supply chainmanagement, E-business, E-word of mouth, project management, inventory management, game theory,and business competition.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Aussadavut received an Evert McCabe Fellowship (in 2006) and a Bertauche EndowmentFellowship (in 2007-2008) from the University of Washington. He has also received research fundingfrom the Thammasat University Research fund, the office of Thailand Research Fund (TRF), and theOffice of the Higher Education Commission. Furthermore, he is currently supervising one Master’s andtwo doctoral students on research topics related to logistics and supply chain management.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Nattharika Rittippant received her B.S. in Biology, B.A. in Economics, M.B.A. in InternationalBusiness Management, and M.M. in E-Commerce from the University of Dallas (USA). She receivedher Ph.D. in Strategic and International Management from the University of Texas at Arlington (USA).Her research areas include entrepreneurial intentions, CRM, real options, MNE and internationalstrategies, strategic management, privatization, international management, and entrepreneurship.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Nattharika has received research funds from the Thammasat University ResearchFund, the Office of Thailand Research Fund (TRF), the Office of the Higher Education Commission,and the Small and Medium Industry Institute (SMI). She is currently supervising two Master’s studentson research topics related to E-commerce and corporate social responsibility.

ICT Students Receiving the Best Paper Award at the InternationalConference on Biological and Medical Sciences (ICBMS’2012)

Two students from the School of Information, Computer, and Communication Technology(ICT), Mr. Smith Gulati (Information Technology Program) and Ms. Nutnaree Kleawsirikul(Computer Science Program), received the “Best Paper Award” at the InternationalConference on Biological and Medical Sciences (ICBMS’2012) during December 8-9, 2012,in Pattaya, Chon Buri Province. Their paper entitled “A Review on Hemorrhage DetectionMethods for Diabetic Retinopathy Using Fundus Images” was based on their research workconducted under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bunyarit Uyyanonvara.

ICT Student Won an Award fromthe “Creative for Quality of Life” Competition

Ms. Sweta Dwivedi (from the School of Information, Computer, and Communication Technology, ICT) won the third-prizeaward of 20,000 baht from the “Creative for Quality of Life” Competition organized by the Institute of Intellectual Property andBusiness Incubator (TUIPI), Thammasat University (TU). Her senior project entitled “An HCI Application for Aiding Childrenwith Mental Disorders” was conducted under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Surapa Thiemjarus (a then-ICT faculty member).The award presentation was held on December 18, 2012, at theThammasat Convention Park (Gymnasium 1), TU, Rangsit Center.

The project focused on the creation of a multisensory virtualenvironment (MSE) through which people who are affected by variousforms of mental disabilities can relax and get some mental stimulation.Based on the use of Microsoft Kinect, the system is able to track theuser and the gestures they perform, allowing them to interact withthe application, which displays the outcome of the interaction onto awall using a projector. The software application also allows therapiststo choose among different backgrounds, music, and effects to createa virtual scenario suitable for each individual.

Fuji Electric ScholarshipsOn December 7, 2012, Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. gave scholarships to SIIT undergraduate students who have good academicperformance and good conduct. A Scholarships Awarding Ceremony was held at SIIT, Rangsit Campus. Executives from FujiElectric Co., Ltd.-Japan and Fuji Electric Power Supply (Thailand) Co., Ltd. led by Mr. Naoyuki Kawada (Manager of HumanResources Dept./Recruiting Center, Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., Japan) and Mr. Natee Nararatnkul (Director of Fuji Electric PowerSupply (Thailand) Co., Ltd.) were guests of honor. A warm welcome was extended by Professor Dr. Somnuk Tangtermsirikul(SIIT Director) and several SIIT Faculty members.

SIIT Orientation for New Undergraduate Students(2nd Semester/2012)

SIIT held an orientation for new students who were admitted in the 2nd semester of academic year2012 on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at its Rangsit campus. More than 60 new students and theirguardians attended this orientation. The students and guardians were briefly informed about theacademic policies, regulations andprocedures, student activities,scholarships, ethics, and welfare,as well as the facilities of SIIT atboth Rangsit and Bangkadicampuses.

The information was presented by Professor Dr. SomnukTangtermsirikul (SIIT Director), Associate Professor Dr.Supachart Chungpaibulpatana (Assistant Director forAcademic Affairs), Associate Professor Dr. Alice Sharp (Headof the Department of Common and Graduate Studies), andAssistant Professor Dr. Veeris Ammarapala (AssistantDirector for Student Affairs and Alumni Relations).

Welcoming New International Students to SIIT (2nd Semester/2012)The International Affairs and Corporate RelationsDivision held an orientation for the new internationalstudents who enrolled at SIIT in the 2nd semesterof academic year 2012 on October 31, 2012 at theRangsit Campus. They included 56 newinternational students, exchange students fromSIIT’s partner universities, and students whoreceived SIIT graduate scholarships. The orientationwas intended to provide information about academiclife, regulations, and campus life, including Thaiculture to the international students.

In addition, SIIT students from theInternational Club arranged a campus touron November 1, 2012, to introduce campusfacilities to these new international students.

Orientation for Graduate Scholarship Recipients inthe 2nd Semester of Academic Year 2012

The scholarship orientation and signing of a scholarship agreementfor the “Graduate Scholarship Program for Excellent Foreign Students(EFS)” and the “Graduate Scholarship Program for Student fromNeighboring Countries (SSNC)” were held on October 31, 2012, atSIIT, Rangsit Campus, by the Student Affairs and Alumni RelationsDivision under the supervision of Asst. Prof Dr. Veeris Ammarapala,Assistant Director for Student Affairs and Alumni Relations.

Fourteen graduate students were qualified for the EFS andSSNC scholarship programs for the 2nd semester of academicyear 2012. Among them, twelve students received the EFSscholarships while the other two students received the SSNCscholarships. During the orientation, the scholarship recipientswere updated about the scholarship policies, privileges, serviceobligations, and payment guidelines. In addition, Assoc. Prof.Dr. Alice Sharp, Head of the Department of Common andGraduate Studies, presented useful information regarding theEnglish proficiency requirements of SIIT to the scholarshiprecipients. The EFS scholarship program is a new scholarshipprogram that provides tuition and educational support fees,living allowance, and other benefits. The program was newlystarted in the 2nd semester of academic year 2012.

Thai Study ProgramThe International Affairs and Corporate Relations Division organized a “Thai Study Program” for foreign students who enrolledat SIIT in the 2nd semester of academic year 2012 at SIIT, Rangsit Campus, on November 9, 2012. The program includedgeneral Thai cultural information and a basic Thai language course for new exchange students. Additionally, SIIT offered abasic Thai language course to all new international students to learn basic Thai language. Listening, speaking, reading, andwriting are taught for a whole semester. The course included a practical workshop at the end of the semester.

SIIT Cultural TripThe International Affairs and Corporate Relations Division arrangeda cultural trip for both Thai and foreign students in the 2nd semesterof academic year 2012 to visit cultural places (e.g., DamnoenSaduak floating market and Siam Cultural Park in RatchaburiProvince, and Mrigadayavan Palace in Petchaburi Province) onNovember 18, 2012. The trip was intended to provide informationon interesting places including Thai culture to foreign students,and to encourage students to join activities on cultural exchange.

TU Loy Krathong Festival 2012Thammasat University (TU) organized the “Loy Krathong Festival 2012” event at Gymnasium 1, Rangsit Center, during November26-28, 2012. In this event, SIIT participated in both the krathong competition and the “Nang Noppamas” contest. Therepresentatives of SIIT were chosen from winners of SIIT Nang Noppamas auditionsand of the krathong contest, organized by the SIIT Student Committee. For the TUkrathong competition, the krathongs from Baan 8 and Baan 9 received the HonorableMention awards based on the Creativity Category and the Beauty Category, respectively.Moreover, both SIIT representatives for the Nang Noppamas Contest received awards.Among more than 30 candidates, Ms. Pimpimook Phanthana, a first-year student, wonthe “Miss Popular Vote” award and Ms. Nadine Hotzwik, an exchange student fromGermany, was awarded the “Second Runner-up Beauty Queen” title. Additionally, Ms.Jinjuta Charoensiri who is an SIIT second-year student served as the master of theceremony (MC) at this event.

Special Lectures Organized by The CyberTech ClubThe SIIT Cybertech Club organized a lecture entitled “Special Lecture on ITEthics” at SIIT, Rangsit Campus, on October 1, 2012. Assistant Professor Dr.Pinai Nanakorn, a guest lecturer, is an expert from the Faculty of Law,Thammasat University (TU). The information and examples focused onawareness of using information of laws related to computer, electronics,technology, communications, cyber-crimes, andethics. The audience was 80 Thai and internationalSIIT students, faculty members, and staff members.

In addition, the Cybertech Club organized a “Microsoft Excel Workshop” at the Bangkadi campusduring December 6-7 and on December 12, 2012. The guest lecturer was Assistant Professor Dr.Sontipee Aimmanee from the Faculty of Engineering, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi.Basic knowledge for using Microsoft Excel, and intermediate and advanced skills were among thetopics included in the workshop. Over 140 Thai and international SIIT students, faculty members,and staff members participated in this workshop.

“Design & Decorate My Krathong 2012” EventOn November 28, 2012, the Student Affairs and Alumni Relations Division organized the “Design & Decorate My Krathong2012” event both at the Rangsit and Bangkadi campuses. The event was aimed to encourage Thai and International SIITstudents to share their experiences of designing and decorating krathongs. The 7th TU Rice Farming Project: Transplanting Rice SeedlingsOn November 20, 2012, the Student Affairs Division of Thammasat University (TU), led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Prinya Thaewanarumitkul(Vice Rector for Student Affairs, TU) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chalie Charoenlarpnopparut (Assistant to the Rector, Student Affairs,TU), organized “The 7th TU Rice Farming Project: Transplanting Rice Seedlings” at the rice field of TU, Rangsit Center. Dr.Sumet Tantivejkul and Prof. Dr. Somkit Lertpaithoon (TU Rector) were the guests of honor in this event. Dr. Apichit Svang-Ariyaskul (a faculty member of the School of Bio-Chemical Engineering and Technology (BCET)) participated in this event onbehalf of the SIIT Director.

The SIIT Student Committee led by Mr. Thanat Issaree (President of the StudentCommittee) coordinated student participants from SIIT. Over 50 Thai andInternational students including faculty and staff members from SIIT participatedin this event. After harvesting, the cooked rice will be served to TU freshmenof academic year 2013 in the orientation ceremony. This was a good opportunityto learn and cultivate Thai culture of rice farming for both Thai and internationalstudents.

3rd ASIIT Director’s Cup Golf CompetitionThe Alumni Association of Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (ASIIT) held the 3rd ASIIT Director’s Cup GolfCompetition on November 3, 2012, at Rachakram Golf Club, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. The ASIIT Director’s CupGolf Competition is organized annually to raisefunds for supporting current SIIT students in theform of scholarships and to bring together SIITalumni who love to play golf. The total revenueafter expenses and additional donations from thealumni were contributed to the “SIIT Alumni Fund”which will be used to provide scholarships to SIITstudents under a supervision of the SIITScholarships Committee. Mr. Tispol Nakornsri(ASIIT President) presented the proceeds of thegolf competition to Assistant Professor Dr. VeerisAmmarapala (Assistant Director for StudentAffairs and Alumni Relations) who accepted themon the SIIT Director’s behalf.

All four MTstudents received DAAD scholarships from the International Studyand Training Partnerships (ISAP) Program in cooperation with HRWfor their studies in Germany.

Coral Planting TripAs humans continually exploit land and natural resources, they often disturb the animals’ natural habitats. In the 1st semesterof academic year 2012, the SIIT Volunteer Club members, including foreign (exchange) students, visited Samaesan, Sattahip,in the Chon Buri Province, to help restore the coastal environment by seedingcorals. More importantly, thestudents learned about thecoral life cycle and itssignificance to marineorganisms. This activityhelped the students to befond of nature. It alsostimulates the students tocontribute to society.
