During the 9thJapan-ThailandJointTradeandEconomicCommitteeMeetingheldinKobe,Japanin1989,thedelegatesfromtheJapanFederationofEconomicOrganizations(Keidanren-nowNipponKeidanren)andtheFederationofThaiIndustries(FTI)realizedthatinordertoenhanceindustrialdevelopmentofThailand,engineeringprograms,wherealllectureandlaboratorycourseswouldbetaughtinEnglishbyhighlyqualifiedfacultymemberswithdoctoraldegrees,neededtobeestablished.
AcooperationagreementamongKeidanren,FTI,andThammasatUniversitywasreachedin1992toestablishbachelor’sdegreeprogramsinengineeringatThammasatUniversitywith initial fundsprovidedbyKeidanrenandFTI.After twoyearsofsuccessfuloperation, the“InternationalInstituteofTechnology(IIT)”wasfoundedonSeptember16,1994.HerRoyalHighnessPrincessMahaChakriSirindhorngraciouslypresidedovertheCornerstoneLayingCeremonyofanewbuildingattheRangsitCenterofThammasatUniversity.HisMajesty,thelateKingBhumibolAdulyadejofThailand,graciouslygrantedtheInstituteanewname,“SirindhornInternationalInstituteofTechnology(SIIT),”onJune28,1996.
OnOctober2,1997,HerRoyalHighnessPrincessMahaChakriSirindhorngraciouslypresidedovertheSirindhornInternationalInstituteofTechnology’sInaugurationCeremonyofitsnameandbuilding.In1999,FTIprovidedaparceloflandwithanexistingbuildingatBangkadiIndustrialPark(BKD)forSIIT’susefor30years.InJune2001,theformerPrimeMinisterAnandPanyarachuninauguratedanewbuildingatBangkadiforInformationTechnologyandComputerScienceprograms.
HerRoyalHighnessPrincessMahaChakriSirindhorngraciouslypresidedovertheinaugurationoftheSirindhralaiBuildingatBangkadionJune28,2006.Thisnewsix-storybuildinghousestheSchoolofInformation,Computer,andCommunicationTechnology(ICT),theSchoolofManagementTechnology(MT),alibrary,acomputercenter,laboratories,andclassrooms.
BackgroundsofthethreefoundingorganizationsofSirindhornInternationalInstituteofTechnologyarebrieflydescribedasfollows.
Thammasat UniversityFoundedin1934,ThammasatUniversitywasoriginallydedicatedtotheteachingofhumanitiesandsocialsciences.TheUniversity hasproducedalargenumberofgraduateswhohavegreatlycontributedtothedevelopmentandprogressofThailand.Realizing thesignificant impactofscienceandtechnologyonthecountry’seconomicgrowth, inthe1980’sand1990’sThammasatUniversityinitiateddegreeprogramsinengineering,technology,physicalsciences,andmedicalsciencesatitsRangsitCenter,Pathum Thani.
The Japanese Business Federation (Nippon Keidanren)Throughthemergerofseveraleconomicandindustrialorganizations,theJapanFederationofEconomicOrganizations(Keidanren)wasestablishedinAugust1946.Keidanrenwasaprivate,non-profiteconomicorganizationrepresentingvirtuallyallbranchesofeconomicactivitiesinJapan.Keidanrenhasmaintainedclosecontactwithbothpublicandprivatesectorsathomeandabroad,andendeavored,notonlytofindpracticalsolutionstoeconomicproblems,butalsotocontributetothesounddevelopmentofeconomiesofJapanandcountriesaroundtheworld.
InMay2002,KeidanrenmergedwithNikkeiren(JapanFederationofEmployer’sAssociations)tobecomeNipponKeidanren(TheJapaneseBusinessFederation).HeadedbyinternationallydistinguishedleadersoftheJapanesebusinesscommunity,NipponKeidanrenplaysanactiveandinfluentialroletowardstheachievementofharmoniouseconomicprosperityforallmankind.

The Federation of Thai IndustriesFormerly knownas theAssociationofThai Industries (ATI), theFederationofThai Industries (FTI) came intoexistenceon December29,1987.ItwasatransformedbodyofATI,whichwascreatedin1967.FTIisanindustrialprivateorganizationthatbringstogetherindustrialleaderstopromoteThailand’ssocioeconomicdevelopment.ThemainobjectivesofFTIaretorepresentThaimanufacturersatbothnationalandinternationallevels,tohelppromoteanddevelopindustrialenterprises,toworkwiththegovernmentinsettingupnationalpolicies,andtoofferconsultingservicestomembers.
FTI isafull-serviceorganizationthatcooperateswiththegovernmenttohelpmobilizeThai industriestoreach internationalmarkets.Itactsasa“match-maker”betweenforeignindustrialistsandThairesources,whichcombinethefinancialstrength,planningability,andpersuasivepowerofThailand’sindustrialists.
Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT) offers undergraduate and graduate programs which lead to the Bachelor of Engineering (BEng), Bachelor of Science (BSc), Master of Engineering (MEng), Master of Science (MSc), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)degrees.Thebachelor’sdegree isoffered in the followingareas:chemicalengineering (ChE),civilengineering (CE),computerengineering(CPE),digitalengineering(DE),electricalengineering(EE),engineeringmanagement(EM),industrialengineeringandlogisticssystems(IE),managementtechnology(MT),andmechanicalengineering(ME).
SIIToffersthreemasterofengineeringprograms,namely,MasterofEngineeringPrograminArtificialIntelligenceandInternetofThings,MasterofEngineeringPrograminEngineeringTechnology,andMasterofEngineeringPrograminLogisticsandSupplyChainSystemsEngineering.ItalsooffersMasterofSciencePrograminEngineeringandTechnology,andaDoctorofPhilosophyPrograminEngineeringandTechnology.
At the present time, the Institute has established faculty member, student, and staff exchange programs with a number ofuniversities in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. These programs allow, not only faculty members to collaborate with their counterparts in research projects, but also students to have an opportunity to take courses at those universities. Additionally,invitationstovisitandteachSIITcoursesareregularlyextendedtoqualifiedforeignprofessorsundersuchprograms.
AlthoughitisaunitofThammasatUniversity,SIITisfinanciallyandadministrativelyseparatetoacertaindegreefromthecentraluniversitysystem.SIIT’spoliciesandoperationsareguidedandsupervisedbytheBoardofTrusteeswhichconsistsofrepresentativesfromThammasat University,FTI,andNipponKeidanren,andscholarsappointedbytheuniversity.Inaddition,theSIITAcademicCommitteecomprisingreputablescholarsinvariousfields,providesrecommendationsonrankpromotionsoffacultymembersandalsoreviewsacademiccurricula.TheInstitute,headedbytheDirector,consistsofadministrativedivisions,alibraryandinformationservicescenter,fiveacademicschools,andtheDepartmentofCommonandGraduateStudies(CGS).
OperationsofSIITarecarriedoutattwolocations:RangsitCampus(attheRangsitCenterofThammasatUniversity)andBangkadiCampus(atBangkadiIndustrialPark).

TheRangsitCenterofThammasatUniversity(TU)islocatedatKm.41onPhaholyothinRoad(northbound).Thecampuscanbeconvenientlyreachedbycarviaamulti-lanedividedsuperhighway(Phaholyothin),theChaengwattana-BangsaiExpressway,andbothouterEast-RingandWest-RingHighways.ItcanalsobereachedbybusesNo.29,39(nonair-conditioned),and510(air-conditioned).Thenearesttrainstation,theThammasatStation,isnearthenorthwestcorneroftheRangsitCampus.
Facilities Buildings
Twofive-storybuildingsandonefour-storybuildingarelocatedattheSIITRangsitCampus.Thefirstbuildingisthemainbuildingwithanareaof20,677m2,housingofficesandclassrooms.ThefirstfloorandasectionofthesecondflooraremainlyoccupiedbytheLibraryandInformationServicesCenter,withanexcellentcollectionofup-to-datetextbooks,magazines,andjournals.SIIT’sacademicprogramsandfacultymembers’offices,aswellastheComputerCenterandadministrativedivisions,arelocatedonthesecond,third,andfourthfloors.Classroomsofvarioussizesareonthefirst,third,fourth,andfifthfloorsofthebuilding.
ThesecondSIITbuilding,adjacenttothefirstone,isafive-storyadvancedlaboratorybuildingwithatotalareaofabout3,000m2. ItwasdedicatedbyKeidanrenandFTItoSIITonOctober6,1998.TheAdvancedLaboratoryBuildingIhouseslaboratoriesforconductingseniorprojectsoffourth-yearstudents,researchworkofgraduatestudents,andresearchprojectsoffacultymembers.
ThethirdSIITbuilding,Edutivity,isafour-storybuildingwhichisadjacenttothesecondone,withatotalareaofabout1,500m2.ThisbuildinghousesastudentactivitiescenterandtheofficeoftheBuildingandGroundDivisiononthefirstfloor,andclassroomsofvarioussizesonthesecond,third,andfourthfloors.
Anew8-storyAdvancedLaboratoryBuildingIIwithatotalareaofapproximately7,000m2isequippedwithadvancedlaboratoryandresearchequipmentthatarenecessaryforconductingadvancedresearchersbyfacultymembers,graduatestudentsandsenior-year undergraduate students.
Computer Center
TheSIITComputerCenterislocatedonthethirdfloorofthemainSIITbuilding.Thecenterisequippedwithpersonalcomputersinfourseparaterooms,twoofwhichareusedmainlyforinstructiononprogramming,mathematicalproblemsolving,engineeringgraphicsdesign,andprofessionalreportpreparation,whiletheotherroomsareusedbystudentsforgeneralcomputingpurposes.Up-to-datesoftwarepackagesareinstalledviaserversonthelocalareanetwork,allowingstudentstobecomeproficientwiththeirapplications.Thelocalareanetworksystemsupportsbothacademicandadministrativechoreswhichincludethelibrary’scomputer-basedservices,intranet,andtheinternalemailsystemforfacultymembersandstaff.Thereareanumberofserversforacademicpurposesinvariousprograms.ThelocalareanetworkisconnectedtotheInternetviatheThammasat-Rangsitfiberopticbackbone.Students,facultymembers,andstaffareprovidedwithanindividualemailaddressandservice.WirelessInternet(WiFi)isaccessiblefromallareasoftheSIITbuildings.AVPNservicebywhichstudentscanaccessSIIT’sonlinesystemfromtheirhomesisalsoavailable.InformationontheInstitutecanbeviewedfromtheofficialwebpageatwww.siit.tu.ac.th.
Library and Information Services Center
TheLibraryandInformationServicesCenterislocatedonthefirstandsecondfloorsofthemainbuilding.TheLibraryhasanexcellentcollectionoftextbooks(inscienceandengineering),conferenceproceedings,reports,technicalmagazines,andjournals.Electronicaccesstoseveralinternationaldatabasesisprovided.TheLibraryalsohasacomputerizedsearchsystemtoassiststudentsinlocatingtheirinformationsources.
StudentswhowouldliketostudybythemselvesoringroupswillfinditconvenienttostudyintheLibrary.Individualstudyareasandgroupstudyareasarelocatedonthefirstfloor.Forgroupdiscussion,studentscanmeetanddiscussinthegroupstudyrooms,whichprovidemaximumprivacyandminimuminterference.
Furthermore,studentscanusethemainTUlibrary,whichisalsolocatedattheuniversity’sRangsitCenter,fortheirstudyandliteraturesearchesonsocialsciencesandhumanities.
Infirmary
TheSIITinfirmaryroomissituatedonthegroundfloorofthemainbuilding.Itisstaffedduringofficehoursbyafullyqualifiednurse.Thenursecanassistwithminormedicalproblemsand,formoreseriouscases,canarrangeatimelytransfertoThammasat University Hospital.

ThammasatUniversityHospital,locatedattheRangsitCenter,providesoutpatient,inpatient,andemergencymedicalservices,aswellasotherhealthcareservicessuchasX-ray,physicalexamination,anddentalcare.Physicians,nurses,andmedicalinternsareavailable24hoursaday.Studentsareeligibletoreceivediscountsforroomchargesandservices.TherearealsoseveralprivatehospitalsneartheNavanakornIndustrialEstate,whichisonlya5-minutedrivefromtheRangsitCenter.

AstudentactivitiescenterislocatedonthefirstflooroftheSIITEdutivityBuilding.Thereisarangeoffacilitiesavailableforstudenttouseincludingair-conditionedmeetingrooms,andafoodanddrinkarea.StudentactivitiesarecoordinatedbytheStudentCommitteeunderthesupervisionoftheAssistantDirectorforStudentAffairsandAlumniRelations.AllstudentactivitiesmustconformtoSIITandTUregulations.

TheTUBookstoreattheRangsitCenteriswellstockedwithpublicationsandmagazinesinbothThaiandEnglishlanguages.TextbooksusedinindividualcoursescanbepurchasedattheUniversityBookstoreatcompetitiveprices.Stationeryandofficesuppliesarealsoavailable.
PostOffice
TheThammasat-RangsitPostOfficeislocatedattheDuenBunnagBuilding.Thepostofficeofferscompletepostalservicessuchasregularmailservice,expressmailservice(EMS),registeredmailservice,packageservice,andmoneyordersduringbusinesshours.
Convenience Stores
Studentslivinginthedormitorieswillfindthatshoppingisquiteconvenient.Manyconveniencestoresarelocatedoncampus,andnearby.AttheRangsitCampusofSIIT,thereisaconveniencestoreonthefirstflooroftheMainBuilding.

SeveralcafeteriasandcanteenscanbefoundthroughouttheRangsitCenter.Avarietyoffoodisofferedbyvendorsatreasonable prices,bothonweekdaysandweekends.AdjacenttotheSIITbuildings isacafeteriawhichservesbothSIITstudentsandstudentsoftheFacultyofEngineering.

Forbankingservicessuchascashwithdrawalandbalanceinquiries,studentscanconvenientlyusetheautomatedtellermachines(ATMs)whicharelocatedatvariouslocationsoncampusandattheSIITmainbuilding.Forfullservices,studentscangototheon-campusbranchofficesofBangkokBank,KrungThaiBank,andThaiMilitaryBank.OtherbankswithbranchesnearthecampusareKasikornBank,ThanachartBank,andSiamCommercialBank.
Dormitories
TheRangsitCenterhason-campusdormitoriesformaleandfemalestudents.Over6,200livingunitsareavailabletoaccommodate students, facultymembers,anduniversitystaff.Withinwalkingandshort-drivingdistances,manyprivatedormitoriescanbefound.Theseareco-eddormitories,aswellasdormitorieswithseparatebuildingsformaleandfemalestudents.Air-conditioned unitswithbathroomsarealsoavailable.
Sport Facilities
TheRangsitCenterhasawiderangeofsportfacilitiesforstudentsincludingswimmingpoolsandpracticefieldsforsoccer,basketball,volleyball,andtennis.Allareinthevicinityofthestudentdormitories.Areasforindoorsportssuchasbadmintonandtabletennisareprovidedintheindoorgymnasiums.Studentsmayalsochoosetoexercisebybiking,jogging,etc.,especiallyinthemorningsincetheairisveryrefreshing.Inaddition,theRangsitCampusofSIIThasanoutdoorbasketballcourtinfrontofthemainbuilding.

Facilities Buildings
In1999,FTI,withco-operationfromToshibaThailandCo.,Ltd.,andMitsui&Co.(Thailand),Ltd.,provided5.6rai(0.9hectare)oflandwithanexistingofficebuildingintheBangkadiIndustrialPark(BIP)forSIIT’suseforaperiodof30years.Later,SIITpurchasedtwomoreparcelsoflandintheindustrialparkwithareasof4rai(0.64hectare)and5rai(0.8hectare).Theexistingbuildingwasrenovatedandenlarged.Thisbuilding,whichiscalledtheIT&MTbuilding,hasacombinedareaofapproximately3,300 m2.TheComputerScienceandInformationTechnologyprogramsmovedtothesenewfacilitiesinJune2002.
Another6-storybuildingwithanareaof6,452m2wascompletedinOctober2004.HerRoyalHighnessPrincessMahaChakriSirindhorngraciouslygrantedtheuseofthename“Sirindhralai”forthisnewbuildingandgraciouslypresidedovertheinaugurationofthisnewbuildingonJune28,2006.IthousestheSchoolofInformation,Computer,andCommunicationTechnology(ICT),theSchoolofManagementTechnology(MT),theLibraryandInformationServicesCenter,theComputerCenter,classrooms,andlaboratories.
ThethirdSIITbuildingistheSIITAdministrationandTrainingBuilding,locatedinfrontoftheBangkadiIndustrialParkonTiwanondRoad.Itisafour-storybuildingwhichaimstobearesearchandtrainingcenter.Thefirstfloorisforcarparking.BangkokBankislocatedonthesecondfloor.Ontheupperfloors,therearegraduatestudentofficesandresearchlaboratories.
Computer Center
AComputerCenterofficeislocatedonthesecondflooroftheSirindhralaibuilding.Itsupervisesandmaintainstwolaboratories forinstructionandstudents’useinmathematicalandstatisticalproblemsolving,computergraphics,systemssimulation,database applicationsandprogramming,computernetworking,andgeneralcomputingpurposes.Inaddition,therearenetworkaccesspointsinalmosteveryroomofthecampuswhichconnecttotheRangsitCampusofSIITbyahigh-speedconnection.StudentscaneasilyaccesstheInterneteitherfromtheirnotebookcomputers,usingwirelesshotspotsineverybuilding,orfromthecomputers inboththelibraryandthecomputerlaboratories.

Infirmary
TheinfirmaryroomisonthegroundflooroftheIT&MTbuilding.Afullyqualifiednurseisinchargeduringweekdaystoassistwithminormedicalproblemsandprovidefirst-aidtreatment.
Dormitory
TheSIITInternationalResidenceatBangkadihastwofive-storybuildings,oneformaleresidentsandanotherforfemaleresidents. Thereare72roomsonthe2nd-5thfloors,whichcanaccommodateupto144residents.Commonrooms,canteen,andalaunderettearelocatedonthefirstfloor,withaconveniencestorenearby.Inaddition,freeinternetWi-Fiisprovidedfortheresidentsonthegroundfloor.
