Superior Processing and Imaging

The high resolution radar signal processing and 256 shades of colour provide detailed imaging of faint oil spills and small objects on the sea surface. The automatic detection and outlining of oil spills is performed by the SeaTrack Plot Extractor and Target Tracker, and not just the result of image processing, by which the Sigma S6 OSD achieves its outstanding detection quality and low false alarm rate for oil spills. Only Rutter Sigma Technology is known for this level of performance and used onboard of more than 100 vessels, ice breakers, oil spill response vessels, research vessels and offshore platforms.

Familiar User-Friendly Interface

The Sigma S6 Oil Spill Detection System is a result of 20 years of research and development for the purpose of detecting ice, icebergs, sea surface anomalies and/or small targets. The technology has been refined into the current Sigma S6 radar processor, tracker and recorder. Rutter’s Sigma S6 technology has been verified by several NOFO oil spill trials to automatically detect, outline and track oil spills. It has been verified that

Sigma S6 OSD can detect oil spills out to more than 7km, at wind speeds of >2 m/s and wave height <3 to 4 m.

Sigma S6 OSD offers exceptional processing capabilities that include:

• High resolution image processing for presenting “photo-like” images.

• Pulse-to-Pulse Processor for superior noise reduction and tracking accuracy.

• Scan Average Processor can be set to correlate radar scans for detecting small moving targets, or motion compensated radar scans for enhanced detection of oil spills.

• Output of oil spill centroid coordinates with calculated drift speed and angle in NMEA/TTM format via LAN or serial interface.

• Output of oil spill outline in polygons in the form of geo-coordinates.

Rutter’s Sigma S6 technology can be used for oil spill detection, as well as navigating in ice and for small target detection in rough seas.

• Experience reliable detection from both moving vessels and stationary platforms• Automatic archiving of ESRI shapefile data• AIS target and chart overlay capability available• Horizontally and vertically polarized antennas available• Early detection of the oil for improved response and containment

Sigma S6 Oil Spill Detection SystemProtect the Environment – Automatically Detect, Outline and Track Oil Spills

Oil Spills are costly to both the environment and the marine industries. Even with the best preventative measures, spills happen. The key to minimizing spill damage is early detection and efficient response. The Sigma S6 detects even small quantities of oil at further distances across a broad range of sea, light and weather conditions. Superior radar processing combined with precise motion compensation allows vessel-based systems to detect oil at speeds over 10knots. Sigma S6 OSD is certified by NOFO, the “Norwegian Clean Seas Association for Operating Companies”, for installation on Oil Spill Response Vessels, a certificate which is also recognized by other offshore oil producing countries.

“I can confirm that the Rutter Sigma S6 has been used and proven its capabilities during the oil spill in South-eastern Norway. It is still in use, and has made it possible to recover oil from the surface in low-light and during night conditions.” –Norwegian Coastal Administration

Rutter’s Sigma S6 Oil Spill Detection can be integrated with its Sigma S6 Ice Navigator and Small Target Systems to provide the complete solution to meet demanding operational requirements.
