A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT,RONNIE RECTOR

September 2019Ahhh, September. Kids are back in school, college is back in session, and the snow birds will soon be migrating south. Here’s to enjoying all our region has to offer, without all the crowds. This morning at work it actually smelled like fall outside. Don’t get me wrong, I am NOT looking forward to snow just yet, especially after an 8-month winter…it’s just that fall is my absolute favorite time of year!More changes are happening at SWS. After this September issue, we will be going bi-monthly with our newsletters. This will make them more important for you to read, as there’s going to be less repetition of announcements. But this will also make the various Board members’ and Chairs’ jobs easier. Naturally, anything extra important and time sensitive will be sent out in an email to our members. We are also returning to Constant Contact for all registrations, including memberships, exhibits, and workshops. This change should be pretty invisible to you as a member, as the website will still be where you’ll find the “Register Here” links. Thanks to Julene Hunter, Anette Rink and Cheryl Keaveney, among others, for providing the technical savvy to keep us seamlessly rolling along, and to Colleen Reynolds for leading us to the product in the first place. Hard to believe I will be in GREECE at the end of this month (and will miss another Board meeting). It’s not a country I ever thought I’d visit, but this trip just sort of landed in my lap. I’ll be traveling with a girlfriend for two weeks of beaches, sightseeing, and culture shock. And I am looking forward to actually meeting a fellow artist who lives in Athens, who I “met” a few years ago thanks to the “six degrees of separation” that is Facebook. Funny the different adventures life throws our way. Enjoy the beginning whispers of fall, y’all! Στην υγειά σας (Cheers!)- Ronnie

The newsletter will be going to a bimonthly schedule starting with this September/October issue. Some reasons to do this:• The newsletter started as the only way of

communicating with members other than direct phone calls. With internet, email, social media, and our website, we now have many ways of getting the word out to members in a timely manner.

• There is a lot of redundancy in the newsletters month to month. Many news items, classes, the Challenge, workshops, calendar items, etc. were repeated in at least 2-3 newsletters.

• Less issues would ease the duties of many of our Board members. Doing 6 issues instead of 12 would cut in half the number of President’s messages, Treasury reports, and yes, the number of newsletters I would make. It has been difficult to fill our Board positions and maybe a little less work would help.

I will be sending out an email at the start of the month before a newletter comes out to remind members to get their news items in by the 20th. For example: November/December 2019 issueOctober 1 - Reminder email to get your news items in by October 20. October 20 - Deadline for November/December.November 1 - The November/December issue will be up on the website and a notification email sent. You can send news items any time before the 20th. I will keep them in a folder on my computer until I work on the newsletter after the 20th. It would be helpful if you would title your emailed submissions “SWS Newsletter” so I can search for them and not miss anything.

LIBRARY NEWS FROM CHERYLAt the 5/19 general meeting I passed around a list of DVD (artist) requests and asked that members check any artists/DVDs that they would like to see in the library. Responses were as follows:Tony Couch (2)Robert Brindley (0)Ann Abgott (2)Paul Jackson (2) (have 1 in library)Thomas Schaller (1) (have 1 in library)Tom Lynch (1) (offering student price at workshop)Joyce Hicks (1)Three artist’s names were added to the list: Frederick C Graff, Keiko Tanabe (2 people indicated interest), and John Salminen (2 in library). Taking into consideration what we already have in our library, requests/interest, and upcoming workshop artists (plus sales prices, shipping and availability of physical DVDs, etc.) I purchased three new DVDs which should be available at the next general meeting.Keiko Tanabe- Storytelling with WatercolorAnn Abgott- Watercolor Techniques for Daring Color

THE NEWSLETTER IS GOING BIMONTHLYImportant notices that fall in between newsletters such as meeting reminders, show deadlines, take-in dates, etc. will be sent by email. Thank you for your patience while we make this transition. - Lisa Jefferson, Newsletter Chair

MORE NEWS FROM THE BOARD

PRESIDENT & SECRETARY NEEDED!- The President’s Position is open for 2020/2021. Hasn’t Ronnie Rector done a great job as President? But think about it - she’ll also do a great job advising the next one! As President, you’ll get a lot of support, get to work with other Board Members & artists, and help out a wonderful organization.- From Linda Halicki, Secretary I’m moving on, and am super excited about being the next Vice President, doing what I can to bring wonderful workshop experiences to the Society. However, somebody needs to step up and be the next Secretary. The Secretary’s role is all about taking minutes notes at both the General and Board meetings (where I enjoy staying in touch with our membership). If you need to miss a meeting, there’s always somebody who will temp for you. Then the notes are edited. I’ve got templates, which I modify with the current agenda, which makes it much easier to stay organized. So what do you say - this is actually a pretty sweet position to help out the Society without too many volunteer hours involved. Please Contact Ronnie Rector if you are interested in either of these positions.

ART ANGELSWe offered two “Discover Watercolor” workshops on July 26th at the Wilbur D. May Museum, as part of Artown 2019: one in the morning (where we had 37 children participating) and one in the afternoon (where we had 30 children participating). Approximately two-thirds of the children had not previously taken an Art Angels workshop, so it was great to reach a new audience! We had seven instructors for each session, plus two people/session greeting the children and matting the paintings, as well as several helpers. We got mostly excellent feedback, with almost all participants saying they would definitely come again or recommend the next Art Angels workshop to a friend. We also raffled off a basket of art supplies each session and garnered $81, plus $35 in tips! Many thanks to instructors Eileen Fuller, Linda James, Virginia McLaughlin, Mary Ann Quaglieri, and new member Donna Stupfel-Smith, who did both sessions with me, and to Marilyn Kuenzli-Howell (morning session) and Alicia Cobb (afternoon session); they gave the children such a great experience! Thanks also to helpers Kathy Martin and George Baba (both sessions) and Sandy Retter, Ute Vetter, new member Kelley Werner, Marilyn’s daughter Maddie, Mason Cobb, and Susan Tissier for making sure everything ran smoothly! You all are awesome! Our next workshop (Art Angels Holiday Workshop) will be on Saturday, December 14, from 9:30 (arrive at 9)-11:30 a.m., at the Wilbur D. May Museum. We would like to have eight tables of instruction, if possible, as well as two people to greet the children and mat the paintings and eight helpers. Linda and I will again set up the afternoon before. Please let me know if you are willing and available to instruct or to help. Thank you!Silent Auction & Raffle: We will again be raffling off the paintings donated by our guest artists and will do a Silent Auction of members’ original paintings (ideally, framed and 12” x 16” or less, but we will take unframed and larger paintings, as well). Please consider donating a painting to the Silent Auction. All proceeds go to purchase supplies for the Art Angels classes and workshops. We will start the Silent Auction & Raffle the morning of the SWS Brunch at Wilbur D. May Museum on December 7th, and will end the auction & raffle right after the Art Angels Holiday Workshop on December 14. We will also need people to “babysit” the paintings and sell raffle tickets. Thank you in advance for your donation and/or your purchase of raffle tickets ($5 for one ticket, $20 for 5 tickets, $50 for 15 tickets). Art Angels School Classes: We had been scheduled to go to Sierra Nevada Academy Charter School on August 27 and September 24, but our contact person’s position was eliminated, so we hope to schedule her later, if she gets another position. Upcoming classes for which help is needed are as follows:
