T he SICOT/SIROT 2006 Annual International Conference heldin Buenos Aires in August was a great experience. BartolomeAllende wished to give an original scope to the scientific pro-

gramme gathering no less than 163 invited speakers coming from allparts of the world and representing the most advanced knowledge inorthopaedic surgery. With 195 free papers, in total 358 oral presenta-tions and 262 posters, a large window on our discipline in the worldwas opened to Latin America.

The Trainees’ Meeting, chaired by Bartolome Allende Jr and Rocco Pitto, allowed young orthopaedic surgeons to present and discuss withthe seniors the present state of their work. 27 oral presentations and62 posters were presented during this session.

1,160 participants came from 81 different countries. Despite the longdistance to travel, Europe had the largest participation and, in decrea-sing order, Latin America,Asia and Pacific, North America and Africa.

In addition, the Fourth SICOT Diploma Examination session was heldunder the direction of Tony Hall and Charles Sorbie and very goodtrainees received their diplomas, among them the best two receivedthe German Fellowship. A total of 32 awards and diplomas were givenat the Closing Ceremony. The tango with its special combination ofmelancholic and sensual melody gave a very special character to theBuenos Aires Meeting.

I should like also to point out some of the new developments of theSociety during the last few years. Every member will receive soon –especially for those who are interested in being involved in local hu-man assistance when a disaster occurs in the world – a proposal forcollaboration with Doctors Without Borders. The SICOT Telediagnos-tic system will be open to all members who have basic equipment.New communication services will also be available. I will give you moredetails of these new developments in future Newsletters.

Since last yearthere has been aclear implicationconcerning theresponsibilitiesof SICOT publi-

cations and communications.

Homepage of the SICOTwebsiteThe website is one of the mostimportant communication toolsof SICOT. Responsible for thewebsite is Beatrice Chaidron, whois very active and engaged in kee-ping the homepage of our societyalways updated.

SICOT World PortalResponsible for our portal is Na-thalie Pondeville with the sup-port of Dr Cyril Toma. Great ef-forts have recently been madewithin the portal concerning links, articles, e-lectures, forums, etc.The majority of the changes arethe creation of new links in theleft main menu. Links have beenadded: one link to the SICOTwebsite, one to the SICOT mana-gement, with three sub-menus : alink to the Board of Directors2005-2008, a link to the Com-mittees 2005-2008 and a link tothe SICOT National Representa-tives (this link is regularly upda-ted). Other links have been crea-ted : a link to WHO, to EFORT, to

AAOS, to ISAKOS, to APOA, toICOE and to AO International.

Articles about "Country to coun-try" have been uploaded to coverthe art of orthopaedics throu-ghout the world. The same hasbeen made with Evidence BasedOrthopaedics.

All the e-lectures posted in theprevious SICOT World portal(Prof Leong, Said, etc.) have beenposted in the new one. Further-more the Bone and Joint Decademonthly uploads the e-lecture ofthe month in the framework ofthe BJD e-lectures series.

NewsletterResponsible for the Newsletteris Nathalie Pondeville at the SICOT office in Brussels and Roc-co Pitto, our Editorial Secretary,in New Zealand. The content ofthe Newsletter has improved dra-matically since Rocco Pitto tookover the responsibility. In 2005the Evidence based orthopaedicsection was created and sincethen many articles have been in-cluded.

In 2005 the very interestingCountry to country series, crea-ted a few issues earlier, includedFrance, Saudi Arabia,Turkey, Esto-nia and El Salvador.

All issues included informationconcerning young surgeons. Fur-thermore there were articles onthe work of our Committee withreports from the Congress SiteAdvisory Committee, the OfficerNominating Committee, the Trau-ma Committee and the Educa-tion Committee.

International OrthopaedicsAt the Editorial Board Meeting inParis our new Editor-in-chief,Jean-Pierre Courpied, was able toinform the attendees that thenumber of submissions had risensteadily since 1999. So far our ac-ceptance rate is 22% and our pu-blication time is short in compa-rison with other journals. All ac-cepted manuscripts are publishedin Springer online within fourmonths and the paper version wi-thin 7-8 months. Recently manus-cript preparation has been out-sourced to the Philippines andwe wait to see whether the pre-sent standard can be maintained.Final checking of the proofs isdone by Tony Hall and Jean-PierreCourpied.The impact factor hassteadily risen over the last 5 years.Starting from 0.427 in 2001 it rea-ched 0.676 in 2005.

Youngsurgeons

The Australian SICOT award wasestablished in 2004 with the dualaims of giving young deserving sur-geons the chance to attend the SICOT/SIROT Annual InternationalConferences, and also to give sur-geons the opportunity to spendtime working and assisting in a de-veloping country. It is awarded toyoung surgeons or trainees presen-ting at each Annual InternationalConference and Triennial WorldCongress, and consists of three pri-zes of AUD 3000 each.

This year I was fortunate enoughto receive one of the awards, andwas able to travel to work for sixmonths as a junior fellow at theHospital Obrero in La Paz, Bolivia. This was organised with the kindassistance of Dr Jorge Blacutt, whois also head of the AO chapter inBolivia.

Hospital Obrero is located inMiraflores in the central zone of LaPaz, at 3,600 m the highest capitalcity in the world. It was a fantasticexperience to work there, and tosee orthopaedics in such a differentenvironment. A majority of theworkload was related to traumaalong with some arthroplastieswork. It was interesting to see thatthe principles of orthopaedics insuch areas as fracture fixation andasepsis remain the same around theworld, whatever the level of resour-ces.There were many challenging

cases faced daily by the orthopaedicteam, who were well organised andcreated a strong teaching environ-ment within the hospital. Primaryhip replacement in particular couldbe complex, with the high local rateof developmental hip dysplasia pre-senting late in life, due to a lack ofprimary care screening in childhood.

Bolivia is also a great country tovisit. Its people share a welcomingand friendly culture and a countrysi-de endowed with spectacular lands-capes.They range from Amazonianrainforest to the mountains of theAndes and the vastness of the Alti-plano. It is richly steeped in history. It is home to both the centre of theTiwanaku civilisation and the sacredIsla del Sol, according to Inca legendthe birthplace of the sun over LakeTiticaca. It was also an exciting timeto be in Bolivia politically, with therecent election of Evo Morales in Ja-

nuary, the first indigenous head ofstate of Bolivia since the Spanishconquest 450 years ago.

Congratulations to both IbrahimAhmed Elias from Ethiopia and Alf-redo Pozzo from Bolivia, who alsoreceived the Australian SICOTAward this year. Both were able totravel to the SICOT/SIROT 2006Fourth Annual International Confe-rence in Buenos Aires in August, where Ibrahim presented a paperreporting on the pattern of ortho-paedic admissions to the Black LionHospital in Addis Ababa. Alfredopresented his work on a minimallyinvasive technique to achieve osteo-synthesis in humeral shaft fractures. Thanks also to the Australian chap-ter of SICOT for their outstandingsupport in providing this award, andI would encourage all young sur-geons to take advantage of theirkind assistance. ■

explosion of new information could be dangerous,it takes time, maturity and experience to controland deliver proven and effective patient care, wemust evaluate these technologies with evidence-ba-sed medicine, making what we believe is the bestdecision for the patient and with the patient.

Scientific medical organisations should contribu-te to the elaboration of ethical, fair and clear rela-tions between industries and medical care organisa-tions, physicians, patients, education and research.Abalanced and transparent interaction will benefit all.Technology by itself is not good or bad, it dependson how it is used.

Research is the engine that pushes and drivesmedicine to success. We need less passive expertsand more creative and innovative persons. It is cra-zy to continue doing the same thing and waiting fordifferent results, as Albert Einstein said.

For most people, life is simple, nice and in a wayshort. Remember that we come to this world withnothing and we leave it with nothing, then we mustlive this period intensively, keeping a balance bet-ween our professional, family and spiritual lives, stri-ving constantly and with all our strength to do theright thing in all the activities we undertake.

Mahatma Gandhi once said : “Live as if you wereto die tomorrow, but learn as if you were to live forever”.

The human being is the only animal species whe-re philanthropy exists, where people produce andwork so much and hard in humanitarian assistance, being responsible for all the progress and achieve-ment, but at the same time and with similar intensi-ty, the Human Being is responsible for many of thedisasters, confrontation, destruction and killingwhich take place in the world.

Good afternoon, ladies andgentlemen,

As President of theSICOT/SIROT 2006 Fourth An-nual International Conferenceand in the name of the Argenti-nean orthopaedic surgeons, I

want to give you a warm welcome to Buenos Airesand thank you all for being with us today.

[…]SICOT as an International Scientific Organisa-

tion has the unique opportunity and mission toprovide and transmit knowledge and experience toallow individual development not only in orthopae-dics but also in ethical and moral principles of life, respect and service to humanity. Our main effortshould go to provide education to the largest num-ber of orthopaedic surgeons in training all over theworld.

Teaching and instruction are not enough, we mayinstruct a savage or a terrorist and we will have aninstructed savage or terrorist, but not a civilised hu-man being. Education has to be built throughout allour life. History, religion, language and customs, arts, human feelings and architecture, habits, musicand fashion are all the best teachers. They all makeup a person’s CULTURE and EDUCATION.

The multiplicity of cultures is the richness of hu-manity. Education is the most important investmentthat can be done at all levels, at any time.

The World is changing faster than ever, we mustbe prepared for and anticipate these changes in allaspects of life. New technology is evolving so rapid-ly and the communication vehicles to inform thepublic about these technologies are so effectivethat they affect our ability to care for patients. This

SIROT needs your support

SIROT developedfrom SICOT as aSister Society.

SICOT is moreconcerned withthe clinical side of

orthopaedics and traumatology.SIROT is committed to research.Clinical practice and Researchmeet somewhere in a grey area. The Boundary is not important. The more important issue lies ontheir Common Interest on Re-search.

The SICOT/SIROT Research Com-mission provides a venue for the

discussion of common researchinterests in the annual conferen-ces.This commission is going tostrengthen its commitment in thecoming years. The commission pro-gramme will be targeting practicalfrontier research topics, and wellorganised deliberations from ex-perts will be provided.

SICOT has started its EducationCentre in Pakistan. SIROT is awareof the rising need for young ortho-paedic surgeons to become invol-ved in research. Indeed, in somedeveloping regions, trainees arerequired to complete one or two small scale research projects

before their final qualifying exami-nation.SIROT is starting short trai-ning workshops for the trainees in2006.The first test case will takeplace in China in November 2006.The next one will be held in Indo-nesia.The workshops will providepractical training in research me-thodology, biostatistics, giving pre-sentations,and writing manuscriptsetc.for 30 to 50 trainees each time.Further development depends ona proper evaluation after the initialexperience.

SIROT is looking for ideas and sug-gestions. SIROT needs your sup-port. ■

We are proud to inform our members of changesthat occurred in national representations. In Bra-zil, Dr José Sérgio Franco succeeds Prof Dr Patri-cia Fucs, who served as National Representativefrom 1998 to 2006 and is now the SICOT Treasu-rer. In Denmark Prof Cody Bünger, who servedas National Delegate from 1990 to 2006, has nowbeen replaced by Dr Ebbe Hansen. In IndonesiaDr Respati S. Dradjat has taken on this year the

duty of SICOT National Secretary from Dr Soe-larto Reksoprodjo, who served from 1986 andsadly died on 12 December 2004. In Romania,Dr Horia-Bogdan Orban is the new National De-legate, following Dr Ion Dinulescu who servedfrom 1992 to 2006. InTurkey Prof Erdal Cila suc-ceeds Prof Ridvan Ege, who served from 1997 to2006.

Changes in countries’ national representation

Culture teaches that RESPECT of human thoughts, feelings, beliefs and understanding of the world is important and that the lack of RESPECT and TOLE-RANCE generates conflicts.

People understanding and acceptance of humanvalues such as RESPECT, FREEDOM, FAMILY, EDU-CATION, HEALTH and NATION contribute to

prosperity, well-being and world peace.Aristotle once said that:“…happiness is the par-

ticipation in something that provides satisfaction ina fulfilled task…” and that “…satisfaction is beingable to help others”.
