When we thought that a lot of things are t ranspir ing and occurr ing on this planet, especial ly wi thin our const r ic t ion of consciousness–our dai ly l i fe, family, work, money, pol i t ics, and ul t imately our concern about how we can cont inue to keep on surviving, we are being forget fu l that these are only mat ters that form parts of the ecosystem of our planet Ear th. Some of us might even feel as i f we are the centre of the universe, and nothing else outs ide this ear th is meaningful or s igni f icant. Ei ther we real ize i t or not, there are count less of inexpl icable things–even on this Ear th–considered as ‘wonders’ that are beyond our l imi ted physical, in tel lectual, and emotional capaci ty, and are yet to be accessed, discovered, endeavoured, or unvei led in the fu ture, hopeful ly.

Being human, somehow we only prior i t ize and are concerned about the things that revolve around us within our experience–there’s no doubt about i t . While experience is commonly achieved through deal ing or handl ing things that are avai lable at hand, this common si tuat ion has somewhat bl indfolded us and prevented us f rom looking at other creat ions that exis t , which might not have any impact on our l ives at f i rs t hand in a part icular way –not to ment ion the elements which are si tuated, located, or residing very far f rom our reach, such as the elements in space.

The sheer vastness of space, furnished by zi l l ions upon zi l l ions inters te l lar in the many bi l l ion galact ic spaces, is enough to get us nauseated whenever we even s tar t thinking about i ts l imi tat ions or boundaries. Nonetheless, the experience of looking at them is def ini te ly worthwhi le to some extent–in nonphysical or psychical ways, at least.

To gaze at the s tars in space, you l i f t up your head and raise your eyes heavenward f rom the ground on a clear night. In a cer tain sense, this act connotes ref lect ing, imagining, aiming high, paying at tent ion, contemplat ing, or even praying. When we look at the s tars, we ‘see’ ourselves f rom a dis tance. We borrow the ‘eyes’ of the s tars to see how very far at a dis tance we are f rom them, and the gaze comes r ight back to us. Thus, we feel something—we feel smal l compared to everything that we see in space, and the s tars appear to be a wide array of twinkl ing whi te dots. Somehow, jus t through the experience of watching the s tars, we feel connected to everything in space. Also, we get mesmerized or even sometimes terr i f ied by this experience. Frequent ly, i t is an indescribable experience that cannot be expressed l i teral ly or verbal ly.

SPAC3 AND TIM3 IN OUR MIND

C H A R A C T 3 R I S T I C S O F T I M 3

SITTIPHON LOCHAISONG Clear and unclear points are joined and assembled so that the audience may reflect on them. Points, figures and symbols are combined with imaginations and sensations to express the essence of the mind. The complicated matters in one’s mind embedding both extremes–the good and the bad without a cause–portraying moral principles that motivate oneself to realize his state of mind, is reflected¬ by the roughness and delicacy of the artworks. The unstoppable movement of the abstract nature of time is perceived by various experiences through sheer consciousness, which causes the mind to concentrate, understand the truth, and realize the nature of the good and the bad. Such experiences are compared with the movement of time, which our senses are able to touch and feel. This is precisely the reason why the characteristics of time comparatively depend on the state of mind.

This abstract nature of exis tence is what Lochaisong is t rying to express in his oeuvre. The immensi ty of space ref lects the immeasurable possibi l i t ies that could happen not only to us but also to every single thing in this universe. While we are bound to t ime, we are constant ly moving into the unknown paths that wi l l only be unvei led when the t ime comes. However, ul t imately, this exhibi t ion is perhaps a way for Lochaisong to contemplate the abstract, random and stochast ic nature of the universe, and hence, this possibi l i ty leads us to ask ourselves about our own open-heartedness in accepting every possibi l i ty in l i fe.

‘Character is t ics of Time’ showcases a ser ies of mesmerizing ar tworks represent ing the epi tome of the s tel lar spaces accomplished by Lochaisong, with the aim that the viewers are immersed in i t . The ambiguous dots of s tars varying in their s ize and luminosi ty were created and joined in his ar tworks, which connote the sense of embracement of the complexi ty and the extreme nature of being. The works of Lochaisong also indicate the myster ious nature of exis tence, including the experience of l i fe and death, the real i ty of good and bad, and the occurrences of the cer tain and the uncer tain, some of which have become Lochaisong’s aspirat ion in the creat ion of his paint ings. Lochaisong hopes to inspire the viewers to ref lect upon the creat ion and exis tence of humans in relat ion to those of other beings—a cal l that would propel us to embrace the inevi table evolut ion of the ever -expanding world.
