Dear Parents/Guardians,

Rooted in the mission of the school and designed to foster the achievement of the philosophy, mission, vision and goals of the school, Sacred Heart School is committed to providing the highest quality Catholic education for each student. Combining evidence-based methods and current best practices, we are dedicated to equipping our students with the tools necessary to be successful individuals who are responsible, life-long learners, effective communicators and problem solvers.

In preparation for the 2016-2017 school year, our faculty and staff have designed a program of studies which is guided by AdvancED, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement, the requirements of Louisiana Department of Education, the Louisiana Board of Regents college admissions requirements and the general entrance requirements of colleges, universities and career training programs. While maintaining the religion course requirement for all grade levels is a priority, Sacred Heart School is committed to guiding our students in selecting courses that will maximize their opportunities for continued growth in the future.

The 2016-2017 Course Offerings Guide provides a description of all courses, and prerequisites. Although information regarding TOPS is included, everyone is advised to periodically refer to the Louisiana Department of Education website, www.osfa.la.gov for updates.

A student’s schedule is subject to change to balance student enrollment in certain classes; as a result, students may not request specific teachers. Poor performance in a course, dislike of the sequence of courses and/or dislike of a teacher does not merit consideration for a change. The school will not consider a request for a change in the schedule unless one or more of the following conditions are met:

a. due to a scheduling error committed by the school;b. a student is completing an academic course, which substantially affects some scheduled course in the summer before the new school year;c. a student must take a course failed the previous school year and which was not available online as a summer-school session.

Creating a master schedule is a challenging task which requires the coordination of numerous factors and limitations; therefore, your cooperation in reviewing this guide, consulting with our guidance counselor making course selections carefully and adhering to the timeline provided will contribute to a smooth and successful scheduling process for everyone involved.

The attached schedule request forms are to be completed online and submitted by specified due date according to grade levels. If a schedule request is not submitted by this date and time, school personnel will complete the schedule to the best of their knowledge.

To receive a diploma from Sacred Heart, students are required to: 1) complete a total of 8 semesters (4 years) in high school, 2) complete all the required religious service hours per year, 3) English I, II, III, IV are required ,4) successfully complete all of the academic requirements for one of the following diplomas:

Core 4 Basic Core SHS Honors This curriculum is for college

bound students. It is very similar to the TOPS

curriculum. Allows the student to enroll in a

4-year university directly out of high school.

Standard High School Diploma This does not follow the TOPS

curriculum, but it is similar to the TOPS TECH curriculum.

Students will not be able to directly enroll in a 4-year university after high school.

Students must attend a technical college or 2-year college before enrolling in a 4-year college.

Very similar to the Core 4 and TOPS curriculum.

In order for a student to be considered a candidate for the Sacred Heart School Honors Curriculum, the student must complete the 22 Honors classes with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. (Only the 22 classes will be averaged and GPA must be at least a 3.5)

Honors classes will be at a faster rate and more rigorous.

Placement into freshman courses is under the supervision of the Administration and Guidance Department. Students entering their freshman year will be placed into Honors classes using the following guidelines:

For students who wish to enter into the honors program after 8 th grade:

The student must meet the criteria on the chart above. Eighth grade teachers will complete the teacher recommendation form and return to the

guidance counselor. The administration and counselor will meet to evaluate the student’s grades and teacher

recommendations, with the final determination being made at the end of the school year. Parent and student must sign Honors Curriculum contract

The student must maintain an overall “B” average (3.0) or higher to be placed in the honors program for the following year.

If the student finishes a grading period with less than a “B” average, a warning letter will be sent to the parents/guardians by the Guidance Department. The warning letter will state that if the student continues to perform below a “B” average in other grading periods, the student will be removed from the honors program the following school year.

If the student has not achieved a “B” average on the final grading period, a confirmation letter will be sent home to the parents/guardians by the Administration. The confirmation letter states that the student will be placed in a regular level class the following school year because he/she was unable to attain a minimal “B” average.

For students who wish to take an honors class but not participate in the honors program:

The student must attain an overall minimal “B” average in the subject area the student wishes to take an honors course.

Louisiana’s Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) is a comprehensive program of state scholarships, and one of the most innovative and progressive student assistance programs in the nation.

TOPS has three award components:

*ALL high school students must successfully complete Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry & one additional unit of math to graduate. Some math courses require prerequisites, while others can be taken in various sequences.

ALGEBRA I (TOPS)

Grade Level: 9Credit: 1unitPrerequisite: None

This course includes the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of real numbers and polynomials. Techniques of solving, writing, and graphing linear equations and inequalities are included. Introduction to solving systems of linear equations and inequalities and manipulations involving exponents and exponential functions are developed. Methods to solve quadratic equations and factoring polynomials complete this course.

ALGEBRA I (Honors)(TOPS)

Grade Level: 9Credit: 1unitPrerequisite: Scheduling Committee Approval

This course is an advanced study of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of real numbers and polynomials. Techniques of simplifying first and second degree polynomials, as well as techniques of problem solving (word problems), are developed. Simplification of rational expressions, a preliminary discussion of ideas relating to geometry, the solution of equations, and an introduction to irrational numbers are included.

ALGEBRA II (TOPS)

Grade Level: 10Credit: 1unitPrerequisite: Algebra I

Course includes solving and graphing linear quadratic and polynomial equations, inequalities, radicals and rational equations; imaginary numbers and composite and inverse functions; use of a scientific calculator while underlying mathematical concepts.

ALGEBRA II (Honors) (TOPS)

Grade Level: 10Credit: 1unitPrerequisite: Algebra I (Honors)

This course is designed for those who have successfully completed Algebra I (H) and is the study of all topics covered in Algebra II while at a more rigorous and advanced level. Topics also included are matrices, more rigorous system of equations, word problems, and more theory behind all the different topics.

This course covers the development of a logical mathematical system through the use of deductive reasoning. Students are taught the logic necessary to prove theorems. An in-depth study of coordinate geometry is covered.

This course is designed for those who have successfully completed Algebra II (H). Geometry topics are integrated while at the same time there is a strong emphasis on advanced algebra skills. The basic trigonometry functions are introduced as well as polar coordinates.

ADVANCED MATH I (TOPS)

This course provides the mathematical background needed to help students in general college algebra courses, the utilization of a graphing calculator and underlying mathematical concepts.

A more rigorous course of study which provides the mathematical background needed to help students in general college algebra courses with the utilization of a graphing calculator
