SHRM VOLUNTEER LEADER ADVOCACY RECAP

What is advocacy?

The word means making recommendations of a particularcase or policy. That is exactly what hundreds of Society forHuman Resource Management (SHRM) volunteer leadersdid earlier this month on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., aspart of SHRM Advocacy Day. This was my first AdvocacyDay with SHRM, however I’ve also participated at the statelevel on specific matters where we are able to spend qualitytime with our Senators and Representatives, talking aboutreal HR policy issues that affect our organizations andemployees.

The SHRM A-Team provided so much support on the issues, and provided guidance on howto “tell our story”, that it was easy to be well-informed on topics that the U.S. Congress isconsidering right now. The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), and specifically howextending this tax credit would continue to help employers close the skills gap byencouraging them to hire applicants who are often overlooked, such as individuals withdisabilities, people with criminal histories, and military veterans, was an important issue wediscussed, as well as increasing the limits for tax relief to assist employers with student loanrepayment benefits.

The Employer Participation in Repayment Act (H.R. 1043) that was reintroduced in Februarywould let employers give tax-free student loan assistance up to $5,250 a year peremployee. That’s the same amount that Section 127 of the tax code now treats as tax-exempt for employer-provided tuition assistance.

Our senators and representatives recognize SHRM as a trusted source for information and

policy analysis, and the A-Team paved the way for our visits by organizing the day’smeetings and ensuring we had logistical support in order to make these meetings happen. When we arrived, we were greeted by the staff members who help our senators andrepresentatives research and formulate policy and decide how to vote on HR legislation. Wewere able to discuss these important issues with these trusted advisers, and as experts inHR, we also answered their questions and provided additional information to makerecommendations to our representatives and senators.

Throughout the day we walked through the mall from the House to the Senate and wereable to get a glimpse inside the U.S. Capitol, where our leaders convene to make policy andpass laws that affect each and every one of us in this great country. This is not only deeplyinspiring but also humbling. The building itself, and the statues and architecture arebeautiful and filled with so much history. We were very fortunate to be able to participate inperson in Washington, D.C., but each one of us has the opportunity to make our voicesheard and participate in the process every day, by contacting our senators andrepresentatives. A great way to do this is by becoming part of the SHRM A-Team, becausetheir tools and policy analysis makes it easy to be in the know about what is going on withproposed legislation.

The tools they provide, such as letter templates and webinars help me make sure I knowwhat issues are at the forefront of labor and employment and HR policy. Not only did ourLouisiana team make an impact on the WOTC extension and Employer ParticipationRepayment policy through our visits, but we also enjoyed learning more about one another(and reconnecting with those we already know) and starting off our Volunteer LeaderBusiness Meeting ready to ignite our leadership! #SHRMVLBM Cecilia Boudreaux, SHRM-CP PHR2019 President Elect

Christmas Angel & Mr. Bingle Giving

Can you believe the holidays are almost upon us? Before you know it, we willbe in full holiday mode!! Decora ons, shopping, family gatherings – all of thewonderful tradi ons that we enjoy and come to expect during the holidayseason.

Sadly, not everyone’s Christmas is filled with toys and laughter; and many mes, children in low-income homes find themselves with li le to no gi s during theholidays. In addi on, many of our senior ci zens who either live in assistedhousing, or sometimes even unaided, face the holidays alone.

As part of NSHRM’s Community Outreach, we are partnering with the Salva onArmy to act as “Santa’s Angels” by providing gi s to less fortunate children inour community. We are also partnering with the Salva on Army to help “Mr.Bingle” deliver gifts to senior and disabled citizens in our community.

Please start thinking about whether you would provide a child’s gift or a senior’sgi (or both). It can be something very inexpensive, such as a stuffed animal fora child or a pair of slippers for a senior ci zen. Anything that you can do will gosuch a long way to make this Christmas special for our neighbors in need.

Signup sheets were available at the Northshore SHRM Annual HR Forum onOctober 10th. Gi s should be brought to the Northshore SHRM Decembermeeting on December 12th. All donations will be delivered to the Lakeside Malldrop off point the following day. The gi s need not be wrapped; they will bedistributed among the families and senior citizens that are sponsored.

Think about the precious sparkle of a child’s eye knowing that Santa hasremembered them! And there’s nothing as rewarding as paying homage to oursenior citizens!
