The AWS Foundation is pleased to host the 2014 disAbilities Expo, the only event of its kind in the tri-state area. Our mission is to help children and adults with enduring intellectual and physical disabilities live as independently as possible, be included in the community and function at their highest potential. Since our grant making began in 2009, the Foundation has awarded grants totaling $3.3 million to northeast Indiana organizations working with individuals with disabilities and their families.

We extend a very special thanks to these sponsors and partners:

Special GuestsDwayne Szot, Zot Artz Arts for AllAn accomplished artist, Dwayne has combined his passion for arts, mechanics and disabilities to make art accessible to everyone. Dwayne’s premise is “that creative expression is a primary human need, necessary for self-fulfillment and self-esteem.” For the special needs population, the benefits of creating art are not only joyful but enhance motor skills, social skills, concentration, sensory input and processing and self-esteem.

Growing up in a foster home with siblings with special needs, his art journey began at an early age. Dwayne worked along-side his foster father learning to fix machines becoming adept at welding, bolting and making do with what was available. “It developed a can-do attitude as well as a fascination with machines and mechanical design,” he says. His artistic abilities developed during high school starting with commercial and graphic arts. Winning graphic arts competitions helped fund his undergraduate education at the Kendall College of Art and Design; he earned a masters degree in fine arts from the renowned Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Zot Artz started in 1990 with funding from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation. Instead of finding ways for people with disabilities to participate in activities for the non-disabled, Zot Artz creates entirely new activities and projects for people with disabilities and invites those without disabilities to join in. That led to building the first “painting wheelchair” along with many other adaptive tools so every artist of any ability can participate in the creative process.

During the Expo a huge mural will be created using adaptive tools, paint and chalk. So join Dwayne in the Art Center for a colorful, creative and unique experience!

Handicap This!Changing the way you think about disabilities is at the heart of Mike Berkson and Tim Wamback’s work. Mike, born with cerebral palsy, is smart, quick-witted and wise beyond his 20-something years. Tim met Mike when he became Mike’s aide more than 10 years ago and the two have been together ever since. Both are comfortable on stage — Mike because he wants the world to know his mind is handicap-accessible, and Tim, who aspires to be a motivational speaker.

Beyond the humor they share is the reality of what life throws at them. Mike needs help with every physical need that frequently leaves him feeling depressed. Tim suffered bouts of depression and dropped out of college. Their individual experiences combine to illustrate that everyone has problems and we’re more similar than dissimilar regardless of ability. The two knew they had a message to share and raise awareness about disability. The “how” was the big question. Helping to answer that question was what they thought to be a crazy idea: Tim would run from Disney World (Orlando, Florida) to Glenbrook South High School (Glenbrook, Illinois) where Mike was a junior, a 31-day trek. The run was an astounding success enabling Mike and Tim to establish the Keep On Keeping On Foundation to fund therapies, home modifications and motorized wheelchairs for individuals living with severe physical disabilities.

In 2010 the stage performance, Handicap This!, was born. The 60-minute show chronicles Mike and Tim’s friendship, surprising circumstances and one-liners sure to have you laughing until you cry. The show’s ultimate goal is to break down barriers and myths about disability, correcting misconceptions and demonstrating that with perseverance and a sense of humor anything is possible.

Ms. Wheelchair Indiana 2014Ruth Smith, a Fort Wayne resident and graduate student at the University of Saint Francis, was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Indiana in April. She will use the title to promote awareness and accessibility of people with disabilities. Ruth will also compete for the national title later this year. Be sure to visit with Ruth who has excelled in life and will work to help others do the same.

Their rousing rendition of Jailhouse Rock will have you dancing in the aisles – they rock! Not to be outdone by the boys, the special needs girl dancers will kick up their heels to Let’s Dance. Dancers Samantha Gavette, Kristy Meeks, Jenny Miller, Julia Ping and Megan Locke bring cool moves to a great piece of music.

JestersThe Expo stage welcomes the region’s largest and longest-running theatrical troupe, the Jesters. A program of the University of Saint Francis School of Creative Arts, the Jesters provides an important creative and social venue for individuals with intellectual disabilities. This year’s performance is excerpted from “Horse Tales,” an original work by Jesters’ director Allison Ballard set in a stable where horses and dogs are gathering for a fox hunt. Music, dance, theatre and puppets are incorporated into this inspiring production featuring extraordinarily talented actors.

Dazzlers Cheerleading SquadWinners of the 2014 U.S. Finals Special Needs Division, the Whitley County Dazzlers (Columbia City) return to the Expo with their award-winning routine incorporating dance, cheer and stunts set to music of the 80’s. The Dazzlers were formed in 2011 with nine members and have grown to 15 members ranging in age from elementary and middle school to high school. Within two years, the Dazzlers had amassed exceptional cheering skills that garnered the group a spot in the 2013 Cheer Ltd. Nationals, which they won in the Special Needs category. They meet once a week and perform at high school sporting and community events, and compete regionally and nationally. You’ll want these cheerleaders on your team!

Wheelchair BasketballTurnstone’s talented varsity and adult teams are nationally ranked once again. At the 2014 Wheelchair Basketball Championship Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, the adult team finished 3rd in the country in their division, while the varsity team finished 13th in the nation. Several individual players distinguished themselves this year with two varsity players, sisters Molly and Nina Welfle, named to the Women’s 1st team All-Tournament Team. Adult players, Nate Silvers and Brad Duetsch took spots on the Men’s 2nd All-Tournament Team.

More wins were in store this year when Turnstone’s varsity coach, Bob Burnsworth, was awarded the Ed Owen Coach of the Year Award at the tournament. Bob won the top coaching award from a field of 88 coaches. He discovered wheelchair basketball as he worked to establish a new life in the disability world after falling off a roof in 1988 that left him paralyzed from the waist down. He was 28 years old. A player for four years, Bob went on to coach for 22 years and was instrumental in starting Turnstone’s sports programs during an internship in their recreational therapy.

Basketball has been a part of the Paralympic Games since 1960 and was originally played only by men with spinal cord injuries. Today men’s and women’s teams have players with a variety of disabilities. Many of the same rules for traditional basketball apply to the wheelchair game. Ever competitive, watch these teams dribble and shoot with amazing accuracy.

Power SoccerTurnstone’s two power soccer teams are ranked 2nd and 15th in the nation as they head to the national competitions in June. Four players are ranked among the top 30 players for scoring out of a total of 425 players. Players use a newly designed Strike Force Chair specifically for power soccer use. The Strike Force Chair enables players to move at a faster speed, hit the ball harder and with greater precision.

Power soccer is the fastest growing sport for power wheelchair users. The sport originated in France in the early 70’s arriving in the United Sates in the 80’s. The game is played on a regulation basketball court with two teams of four players that attack, defend and spin-kick a 13-inch soccer ball. This extremely challenging game, with the fast-moving power chairs, gives new meaning to having a competitive spirit.

Adaptive Sports ExhibitionsTurnstone’s adaptive sports and recreation program, recognized as a Silver Level Paralympic Sport Club, is the fourth largest program in the country. Cheer on Turnstone teams as they demonstrate their athletic prowess and their winning ways.

Adaptive Golf CartThe first adaptive golf cart in Fort Wayne will be showcased at the Expo. Through a partnership with the National Alliance for Accessible Golf and Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation, Turnstone has purchased this golf cart enabling golfers to play from a seated or standing (but supported) position. The golfer can hit woods, irons and putt from the cart. The cart design will not damage tees or greens making the entire course accessible. Turnstone’s adaptive golf program begins in June with an adaptive golf clinic.

Adaptive CyclingTurnstone will have a variety of adaptive cycles for Expo attendees to try out. There is an adaptive bike for nearly every disability – amputees, paraplegics, quadriplegics, sight-impaired, cerebral palsy and more. In the last five years, hand-cycling has exploded to become the most popular and widely practiced form of adaptive cycling.

For more information about Turnstone’s adaptive sports programs, contact Kevin Hughes at [email protected] or (260) 483-2100.

Spread the Word to End the WordThe Down Syndrome Association of Northeast Indiana (DSANI) is promoting the national campaign Spread the Word to End the Word to raise awareness about the use of the R-word (retarded) and eliminate its use in offensive and derogatory ways. Language affects attitudes and attitudes affect actions, so DSANI is asking you to take action and take the pledge to end the use of the R-word. Visit the DSANI booth to take the pledge and learn more about the campaign.

A More Livable CommunityHelp create a more livable community through the Complete Streets and Curb Cuts initiatives. Complete Streets help people with disabilities more easily and safely navigate their community by removing barriers. Visit the More Livable Community booth to help identify where curb cuts are needed in your neighborhood and learn how you can get involved in Complete Streets.
