Alien vehicle/UFO

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

Conan origin story 2015 (YouTube)

Independence Day (1996) Blade Runner (1982)

A staple of the alien/science fiction genre and often used in electronic music as it is associated with a futuristic sound as it doesn’t often use traditional instruments. The aliens form of transportation is pivotal in introducing the character. In my music video I would like to have a impressive CGI UFO but without any budget I will have to settle for a glimpse of a spaceship, this will be achieved by using a miniature(Wes Anderson the director is famous for his use of miniatures and has posted a tutorial for zero budget films) and zooming in very close to create the illusion of a spaceship, the design of the vehicle has been inspired by such classic science fiction movies above and music videos that incorporate aliens. In each shot chosen on this slide the UFO creates severe lens flair, this distorts the camera and creates confusion, I hope to do the same thing in my production and use this technique.

Alien crash scene

Fallout 3 2014(video game)

Conan origin story 2015 (YouTube)

E.T 2 music video

The crash site of the alien is a very important shot as it is the first physical introduction after we see his spaceship that is sealed we are introduced to the physical entity within it, as the spaceship creates a character introduction but also an enigma code as it is unclear what is inside. In each shot used on this slide it is preceded or followed by a surveying pan of the surroundings of the crash, often focusing on rubble and dust being left this also enhances the enigma codes as it builds tension to the reveal of what is going to be discovered between the rubble.

Alien discovery Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Conan origin story 2015 (YouTube)Alien (1979) Paul (2011)

The alien discovery scene is one of the most common in the Sci-Fi genre, there are often very few outcomes depending on the aliens demeanour. The two most common scenarios are that the alien becomes friendly and peacefully co exists with humans or becomes aggressive and attacks and kills humans. For my project I have chosen a alternative route that the alien steals the body of the human. This portrayal of the alien being in a human body allows for a interesting angle as the alien will have to act as if he doesn’t understand anything even though he is a human, this may cause confusion with the audience so it is vital that I make it clear what has happened so the narrative can continue.

Alien in human form

The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) starman 1984

In my research I struggled to find many texts that present aliens in specifically human forms. In both these films a alien comes down to earth and takes human form just as I intend to do in my project. Although these texts present the alien as being accustomed to human life in my project I intend to do the opposite and have the alien be unable to understand basic human tasks, such as walking. Both films are heavily stylised and have a high use of neon colours to emphasise the futuristic elements of the aliens, I would like to emulate this but as we lack a budget we have to improvise using minimalistic laser pointers in brief intervals to create a similar futuristic effect.

E.T 2 music video

Most of these scenes I've watched and included have heavy use of CGI to show the transformation, as I am unable to do this I have to rely on acting and camera work. In the E.T 2 music video a highly similar transformation happens as to the one I want to execute, this video was highly helpful to me as being a independent film maker he also has very small budget and cannot use CGI, he utilises camera shake to very clearly show the transformation this has inspired me and I plan to use very similar techniques to create the same effect.
