    A young and upcoming actress goes to Australia or an ad!enture !acation( &he had

    planned to stay and work with con!icts in an isolated place " all arranged by an

    undergroundDE media organi2ation that produces creati!e programs or tele!ision> whichis not known to the general public> mainly to keep the program creations a surprise(

    #uring her stay in Australia and working with the con!icts an incident happens in a boatride( -he boat carries one con!ict> one neutral person camera manE and her in an isolated

    place/1ourney in which an accident happens and they both die and the con!ict escapes(

    -his comes as a small story in a 0&A newspaper which intrigues an upcoming reporter(

    -he reporter wants to e'plore this and inds out there are a ew other similar incidents

    that has taken place in pre!ious months rom Australia " not sure whether this would be anecessary clue or the reporter to take this seriouslyE( -he pre!ious !ictims are rom

    other countries third worldE and so there was no !isibility and nobody notices them " notsure whether this is reuiredE(

    -he Australian 1ailing authority$s main intension is to ind ways to bring back con!icts to

    the normal society by helping them work with normal citi2ens or which the beha!ioral

    e'periments are necessary( A group o inner circle oicers in the 1ailing agency willcome up with the idea o collaborating with a reality show company rom America to

    make money " no matter whether it is legal or not(

    -he reality show company is continuously e'ploring possibilities or gi!ing uniue

    reality shows and they are willing to go that e'tra mile in getting and keeping a secret or

    the sake o their reality show " no matter whether it is legal or not(

    Mike goes on a personal e'ploration spree to in!estigate( =e e!entually disco!ers that

    one group o Australian go!ernment agency is doing an e'periment on how con!icts

    would beha!e i they are gi!en an opportunity to get back to the society( -his agency hasa tie up with an American media company which is creating a reality show in which

    ordinary people are made to stay and li!e with con!icts when these people do not know

    that the Australian is a con!ict( -his is not known to the public as these two agenciesAustralian and American togetherE want to keep this a secret or their own beneit and

    they ha!e an agreement to share the proit when the program rights are sold or

    telecasting it in the air throughout the world(

    John goes on to e'plore the incident or his own career impro!ement " which the media

    company is willing to sponsor " or them to make money in this process(

    -he story spins around in such a way that all organi2ations are out to make money and

    the underlying truth is that nobody cares about the actual people who are in!ol!ed in this(

    Money is the main moti!ation or the three organi2ations to get in!ol!ed and e!entuallythe two go!ernments also get in!ol!ed only to resol!e it to sa!e their respecti!e images(

    *** Accident in the locality where Ana dies****t is a boat accident% Justin #urgun> Ana and umar cameramanE are in the boat and they

    are busy concentrating on rowing the boat away rom the crocodiles in the back waters /

    ri!er / swamps when something wrong happens and Ana alls into the water and strugglesto get back into the boat( umar was debating between holding up the camera or the

    reality show and helping Ana( F!entually he reali2es that the situation has gone out o

    hands and pounces in to help sa!e Ana$s lie( Justin #urgun could ha!e helped thesituation> and could ha!e pre!ented Ana$s death by alling into the croc@inested water%

    Ana alling was truly an accident> but his apathy leads to umar getting lustered and

    leading to his death( -his also becomes a great opportunity or Justin to escape and he

    grabs the opportunity and runs(

    umar was born in *ndia% he has a good education% lo!es the mo!ies and the !isual arts%

    he starts o as a stills photographer% wins many contests% encouraged by such wins hetakes to pursuing mo!ie camera as a hobby% the e!olution o camcorder pro!ides him a

    great opportunity to check out his talent on skits and documentary programs(

    umar mo!es to the 0&A " =ollywood with great e'pectations( -he mo!ie industry is!ery mature in =ollywood and it leads him to reali2es e!en though his dream is to be a

    mo!ie camera man> he decides to check out tele!ision programming opportunities as the

    money turns out to be !ery good% reality show ends up being lucrati!e but tedious as hehad to ha!e the camera running all the while and in many cases run with it on the ield to

    capture situational scenes that take place impromptu( A lot o creati!ity in such shows

    and the money is good> but the 1ob is tiring with unworldly timings(

    George Carcas knows someone in his industry who recommends umar to him( -hat is

    how umar ends up getting to the reality show(

    Ana Madagas pulled into the garage ater opening it with the remote operator in her

    beaten up old Pontiac GrandAm( icking the car door open> she got out o the car> andsauntered into the kitchen( *t has been a !ery long tiring day and it has taken its toll on

    her( &he was in no mood to take up any more chores or the day% the kitchen sink was

    o!erlowing with soaking dirty dishes rom the pre!ious day$s party( &he walkedsheepishly towards the bedroom> ater throwing the car key and the purse nonchalantly on

    the dining table in the li!ing room( -he bright yellow en!elope that she resisted to open

    in the morning caught her eye that was placed there beore she got o to work% she

    opened it up(

    -he progress in her career had been pretty tough in =ollywood> ar tougher than what she

    e'pected> rom her humble beginnings in Parsippany> ew Jersey> or an acting career(Being one o se!en kids born into a amily where her ather was a building contractor and

    her mother a home maker doing odd 1obs sporadically> she had a hard time growing up as

    a kid( &he graduated rom her high school> mo!ed out o her parents$ home and took up a

    1ob as a sales person in a local tra!els company( &ales lie was hard and grueling>trekking through estering heat and knee deep snow during !arious seasons> making cold

    calls catching people at the wrong times and peddling !acation packages to the wrong seto people( -he only sil!er lining to this chapter in her lie was that she reali2ed she had a

    lare or e'pressing hersel well and was able to con!ince customers into buying the

    !acation packages(

    &he de!eloped a keen interested in the show business and an aspiration to becoming an

    actress% she applied or a degree in acting in the 0ni!ersity o &outhern Caliornia> which

    landed her in =ollywood> Caliornia> &he always wanted to be in Caliornia and en1oy thewarm weather throughout the year( &he completed her degree with lying colors and

    1umped into the employment market with great enthusiasm(

    But the Hemployment market$ or acting> she ound out> was ar dierent rom the sales

    1ob she earlier had and had gotten used to( =er search or a good acting role has been

    pretty tedious> getting in and out o hal a do2en production companies and making slow

    progress( F!ery role that she played ended up being a pro1ect or the productioncompanies and things changed so dramatically o!er the course o its creation( Also many

    pro1ects would end anyway> planned or not> and she would be back on the roads without

    work( =er reputation would ollow her where!er she went and she has to keep up her actwell to ollow through with good re!iews> e!en to keep abreast o things in the industry(

    0nless she hits o !ery well or by ha!ing some lucky break> she was not sure whether

    she could go on ore!er like this(

    audition ne't -uesday( &he recalled she had !isited the oices o Cute GuineaProductions in Granada Park in Calabasas> CA a couple o weeks back during her 1ob@

    newspaper(

    ***Cute Guinea Production company***

    -he cold steel gray building with si' stories located in Agoura =ills houses the Cute

    Guinea Production Company( *t has been that way or the past three years and this mo!ehad been mostly due to cost cutting e'ercises by the management to get through hard

    times> which has been gnawing on them> o late(

    Cute Guinea has been around not !ery long and is an e!ol!ing -ele!ision production

    company that had already produced two super hit sitcoms in early nineties soon ater its

    inception( ,ike most new companies that comes to the market with a bang> H+lying +olks$

    had been on the air or three years netting a cool ity million dollars in national network>ollowed by multiple re@runs( *t also had merchandise rights that were hugely successul(

    ?#angerous #arlings had also been a reasonably successul show ater a ew years ostruggle> e'perimenting on many new show themes and concepts> which had run or two

    years making around twenty million dollars or the production company running in many

    regional networks( But it ended abruptly due to a high@proile lawsuit( -hat was nearly 9

    years back> the lawsuit was settled out o court( But Cute Guinea had not made any goodpro1ects that ha!e been nearly as successul as these two( -he company management is

    struggling to answer the in!estors> who are rustrated that the initial public oering isgetting delayed so ar(

    -he company consisted o a lean and mean organi2ation that was kept at its toes by the

    management and in!estors( Mel was the chairman and was assisted in his decisions by aboard o 6 directors( #on Rea!es reports to Mel Brooks and was responsible or the

    inance department(

    Between the two o them they decide on the tactical operations o the company( Any

    ma1or decisions would reuire they present the options to the board or appro!al( Being alean organi2ation> #on is also responsible or payroll> contracting and legal departmentswhile Mel took care o pro1ects> media and unds( -hey both got along !ery well with

    each other> though they are poles apart in many ways(

    Mel was si'ty eight years old> built on the plumper side> which looked pronounced due tohis i!e and hal eet height> weighing about two hundred pounds> happy@go@lucky in his

    attitude with lots o energy by !irtue o his high spirits and indeatigable dri!e to make it

    big( =e always dressed casually> mostly in hal shirts> #ockers and sneakers shoes( =ehad an undergraduate degree in arts rom the 0ni!ersity o *owa and 1umped into

    employment almost immediately( =e was ne!er a proponent o education and belie!ed

    indi!idual energy and moti!ation could make anything happen( =e has been the dri!ingorce in de!eloping relationship with big media companies and concei!ing money

    making pro1ects( =e has a gru !oice> but it is decepti!ely warm( =e could tame a

    charging bull with his riendly approach and demeanor> but at the same time> he couldlare up and burn a hole through the opponent i he decides he wants it that way(

    #on Rea!es was almost the e'act opposite( =e was tall and strapping at nearly si' eet

    and i!e inches> lean and muscular( =e took great pride in !isiting the gym e!ery

    workday in the aternoon during lunch hours( =e always dressed up in ormal suit and

    appeared to be ready to meet with the President o the 0nited &tates( =e graduated in

    Flectrical Fngineering rom M*- and did his MBA speciali2ing in entrepreneurship romthe =aas &chool o Business rom the 0ni!ersity o Caliornia at Berkeley(

    #on is conser!ati!e and always Hgrounded$ in his thought process( =e always weighed

    proposals critically and asked the most uncomortable uestions( =is approach hasalways been ruthless> disinterested and air% the ualities that appealed most to Mel( -hey

    both got along !ery well due to this( Both men respected the other$s point o !iew and

    maintained a non committal relationship with respect or each others operations(-he only place where they both let down their armors and loosened up was in the bar>

    though the reuency was not !ery high now a days( Any successes in pro1ects would

    dri!e them to the neighborhood bar to celebrate but that has not been orthcoming o late>

    due to tensions running in the organi2ation or inancial success(

    -he company started o with less than a hundred thousand dollars in initial capital> partly

    in!ested by Mel and the rest pulled in by in!estors by !irtue o Mel$s contacts( -oday the

    company has more than se!enty i!e employees> three business partners> three hundredcontractors and manages eight pro1ects in !arious stages( *t has !arious departments each

    speciali2ing in particular areas o the business operation(

    her port olio cautiously held close on her shapely breasts> her small and trendy purse

    dangling rom her slender shoulders towards her let( &he was greeted by the receptionistpleasantly> as she walked into the e'pansi!e lobby area( &he showed her inter!iew

    in!itation> illed up the !isitors badge and was collected a copy o application to be illed

    in(

    &he walked o!er to the lounge and sank into the couch> and started concentrating on

    illing her application( &he handed o!er the application to the receptionist and waited or

    her to be called in( &he was reasonably impressed with the reception( &he hade'perienced sloppy handling in many other companies> doled to new applicants that she

    was kind o positi!ely inclined to check this company out earnestly(

    33!ery bland introduction o the building and work culture in Cute Guinea33 try re!ising

    -he show business is all about " well> showing o( More than pure talents> it is the !isual

    appeal that carries prime importance during the initial stages o a career in this industry(Ater all> studies show that in communication> !isuals contribute up to se!enty percent(

    Almost without e'ception> young actors and actresses ha!e to be !ery good looking and

    play the game o presentation well on the screen beore being recogni2ed or their talentsin the industry( -here are numerous e'ceptions to this> but then talent should play an

    o!erwhelming role( F!en then> it is mostly or the looks rather than or talents at least

    initially> beore a young artist makes a mark on the screen(

    has been looking or a long time and is ready to do anything to get that a!orable nod(

    receptionist and aced her( ?-hank you !ery much or coming(?-he pleasure is mine( Ana was ner!ous as she almost ran to catch up with George$s ast

    paced walk back to his oice(

    -he inter!iew progressed uite pleasantly( Ana was able to impress upon George that shehas the right combination o igure> orm and talent or acting(

    George closed her application ile and handed o!er the portolio back and looked up>

    ?-his recruitment is or a new reality show% is that with youDAna was not sure( ?* didn$t know this is or a reality show% * would be uite happy to

    participate in it as long as * get a good role to play> Ana was pensi!e( &he wanted to

    impress upon him that she would go the e'tra mile or this opportunity(

    periods o time( George wanted to make sure tra!el e'penses are kept to the minimum(-he company has not been orthcoming or appro!ing the budget or his production( =e

    really interested( Many candidates were upset at this> which was a good way to checktheir commitment or the show( course> this is not part o the agenda and the budget

    was not that low anyway(

    Ana was taken aback( .hat options does she ha!e anywayD * she is getting paid well

    this should not be an issue( * there is a price money or the reality show> then she could

    aord it( * this opens up many doors or her> then why not( ?* sure can> so long as it doesnot drain me on the negati!e( &he remembered that most reality shows ha!e hety

    sponsors including tra!el> though such agreements are cut well ater the show is

    underway(

    George was uite impressed( ot many people e'hibited such commitment( At least not

    many talented people with good looks( =er ranking in his list o candidates was going up

    considerably(

    George paused( =ere comes the most important part o these conditions( ?Kou will ha!e

    to sign up a contract or this 1ob> which is 1ust the usual stu( * will pro!ide you with acopy o the addendum( Please take this with you read it and sign it beore coming to the

    audition test( Many o these conditions could appear intimidating but they are only legal

    reuirements that as especially meant or this reality show( *s that with youD Georgestood up% =e was getting uncomortable to put pressure on her to sign such a contract(

    -hough most contracts are normal in this business> this one was particularly harsh(

    -he meeting was concluded and e'tended his arm to shake her hands( ?-hat should bewonderul> Ana shook his hands e'cited and up on her eet( =e didn$t want her to brood

    on this or now(

    George reiterated the importance o this pro1ect to be conidential and pointed to theclause that relates to this in the addendum( =e wanted to make sure she understands this

    and that the deal is o i the conidentiality is broken(

    George walked her out o the room and down the lobby to the reception e'plaining what

    the schedules or the show would be like( ?-his reality show is uite uniue% you wille'perience situations where there could be danger( course> all precautions would be

    taken or protecting e!eryone> but the addendum has clauses to protect us rom any

    danger to your lie based on this show( * know you agreed to this> but * want to make sure

    you understand its implications(

    ?.e will be taking special insurance or up to one million dollars in case o death> to be

    paid to your ne't to kin and three million dollars in case you o in1uries or each o theparticipants(

    ?Just so you know> we ha!e a higher amount or in1uries to compensate or your hardshipincase o accidents( * don$t mean to scare you> but * need you to understand these issues

    Choosing the best set o talents or the show is o paramount importance as the show calls

    or the artists to go through challenging situations at dierent points during the times o

    the day and night> including acing beha!ioral challenges( -his task has been tedious and

    George was happy that he has completed his list with Ana being the eighth and inalcandidate(

    George was satisied with his list( Ana was high in his list> though George did not make it

    apparent to her% you ne!er know how the parameters or choosing would change> i the

    director inter!enes in the choice(

    Maria was 1olted out o her lumbering do2e when the airplane hit a cloud( &he sat uprightor a moment collecting her thoughts and reali2ing that she is in a long@haul light(

    Bank33 in #arwin or nearly si' years beore she got the promotion as a 3e'change

    ?.hat time is it here nowD he was seemingly uestioning himsel> as he remo!ed his

    &eiko uart2 watch and start ad1usting the time( =e knew #arwin$s time was si' hour333 behind ,os Angeles> which is actually eighteen hours ahead i you consider the date(

    -he landing gear shot out and the plane landed rather smoothly and ta'ied its way on the

    tarmac(

    ?* hope someone would come to the airport to recei!e us( Maria was !ery proud o her

    amily and wanted to show John her amily was close and would be supporti!e( Maria$s

    amily is third generation *talians settled in Australia( -he e'tended amily is housed inthe wealthy neighborhood o 33 in #arwin( -hey owned many real estate properties all

    tied( +ran and im are aware o this> but what the hell> she is the last daughter in the

    amily and such things are e'pected to change( -hey are also conident that nobodywould mind it(

    -he parents were chatting with the daughter endlessly throughout the dri!e back home(

    George looked out the window and wondered how this trip would be( =e was born into aamily that is not so close(

    =e has not seen his ather or the past twenty years( =is parents were separated or that

    long and they all ha!e mo!ed on with their li!es( =e was a high school mistake or hismother and so he got a corresponding treatment rom her or that( *n act the only amily

    -he shrill beeping o the alarm clock ne't to the bed woke Martin up with a start( =estretched out and switched the alarm clock o and swung his legs rom the side and

    1umped out o bed( *t was another nice and sunny day in the campus o 33 the

    uni!ersity33 -he early Autumn sun rays was coming into the dormitory gi!ing the roome'tra brightness(

    -he Chemical engineering course is light or this semester 333( Martin has ound a lot otime to read his a!orite books in philosophy and natural sciences> dating girls and in all>

    =e reached the bathroom and started brushing his teeth( Clouds o memory rom his

    regular dream kept reminding him o the beautiul co2y stand@alone backyard room in the

    ar corner o his home garden behind the amily house in 333 in #arwin( -he recent

    dream was as clear as it could be( =is hands were rested on the ibrous soa in the smallroom( -he rooing o the small room was made o thatched lea ibers and the room had

    0nortunately * don$t ha!e a bike to gi!e you a ride( Martin was sorry( =is parents don$t

    want him to ha!e a bike> though they are with him dri!ing a car> which he does notwant( *t is not a good idea to ride a bike or saety reasons> his mom> #ebra insisted(

    #ebra was separated rom her husband when Martin was young and was paranoid to

    loose him( #ebra went on to marry again( Martin$s step ather> Al Pacino was a warm

    person and took e!ery eort to get close to him(

    Martin> though he liked Al> did not allow him to get !ery close as he was threatened by

    the act that Al has come to share his mothers lo!e(

    Martin was an attracti!e> intelligent and a !ery sensible young man who goes out o his

    Martin got into drugs while in college and was using cocaine o and on> though he hadthe strength o character to get out o it a couple o times without much diiculty( =e gets

    caught red handed in a police raid with three grams o cocaine and is immediately

    remanded into custody and a court proceeding takes him to prison or ) years with

    scheduled parole immediately ater that or 7 months(

    #uring his stay in prison> he gets !ictimi2ed by an inside gang who 1ust ound him to be

    attracti!e and an easy target or their whims and ancies in prison( -his aects Martin!ery much and he pleads to the authorities to gi!e him an opportunity or rehabilitation(

    -he psychologists in the correctional acility do not show any empathy or his wishes>e!entually he gets o!erwhelmed with his own guilt or ha!ing gotten in!ol!ed in drugs

    that he commits suicide in prison( -he prison authorities go to great distances to a!oid

    any law suits due to this> but ultimately lea!e Al Pacino with a great resol!e to do

    whate!er it take to mend the system as much as he could make things happen(

    Justin #urgun was born o an single> unmarried woman and has li!ed on the edge o the

    has no eelings or his stupidity( =e considers Al to be a hypocrite to ser!e the 1udicial

    system and yet not be con!inced about its guiding principles(

    =e gets wind o the reality show and nudges Al Pacino to get him into this show( Justin is

    interested in using the 1udicial system or rehabilitation and see i he could get out bybeha!ing himsel( But he being a skeptic is totally disillusioned with the show and only

    considers it a ludicrous nonsense and resigns to the act that there is going to be no

    beneit out o it( #uring the show> he gets an opportunity or a serendipitous escape and

    in this process creates a dangerous> lie threatening situation that Ana Madagas alls into%Justin manages to escape without knowing the danger he has let behind> or which he is

    responsible(

    Ater the escape he gets disillusioned and depressed> eel !ery guilty> particularly atergetting to know that he has been inad!ertently responsible or Ana$s death(

    ***Al Pacino vents out his inner convictions about the %udicialsystem***

    &o 0ltimately Al Pacino strongly eels that con!icts o e!en ma1or oenses o breaking

    the law must be gi!en an opportunity or rehabilitation> by pro!iding them a Hnormal

    would be used to obser!e the con!icts to see how their tendencies are and help them to

    mo!e towards a normal lie( -he grand inale o the show would be to re!eal to the teamsthat their partners are e'@con!icts and make a point in the show that they are eually good

    in ad1usting to challenges in lie similar to normal people and they could be gi!en an

    opportunity to mingle and li!e with the ci!ili2ed world by rehabilitating them(

    Mike spends his time looking at most news articles and reading up web news all across

    the world hoping to ind something interesting that has not been a sensation or now but

    that could lead to new re!elations(

    -he news industry has become so mundane due to the progress o the media industry> that

    most news is based out o press release by go!ernment agencies and departments doled

    en mass to the publishing companies in one meeting( -here is not much to be done inreporting and 1ournalism> other than analy2ing what important ha!e said and trying to

    read between the lines( Most news publishing companies ha!e a huge web presence and

    most news show up on their websites almost immediately ater being a!ailable in

    electronic orm> including pictures and graphics(

    &o> in this world o seemingly impossible odds against inding anything new or

    interesting> Mike going around looking or a needle in a haystack(

    By chance he happens to ind the news article regarding an accident in a remote location

    inE Australia that has killed a young and upcoming actress by the name Ana Madagaswho was on !acation or the past three weeks( -he accident was in a lake or back waterE
