Want to decorate your next event with fresh owers without spending your entire budget? Talk to your local orist about what owers are currently in season where you live. Brave enough to make your ower arrangements yourself? Order the owers from a wholesale company and pay a quarter of the price. Then add inexpensive greenery to make your arrangements look full. For a nal touch, tie a festive ribbon around the vase or container for a “straight from the orist” look. For more advice, go to www.InspiredEventsllc.com or nd us on facebook.

“What business would you like to see in our area? ”
Mike Weddell, owner of Seven Seas Yacht Services located in Grasonville, would like to see an indoor go-kart business in the county. He says that it would draw more families to the area. An ideal location for building this, he adds, would be at the Kent Narrows outlets, where not many businesses are at the present time. Pic-tured here with his prized racing trophies, Mike thanks his customers for the last 4 to 5 years of service to the community, and looks forward to many more.
John Murphy, owner of Island Athletic Club in Grasonville, would like to see an indoor bowl-ing alley establishment come to the county. He believes that it is something that is sorely miss-ing in the county. He adds that it would be a great family place where events could be held and people could truly enjoy themselves. John is looking forward to a great fall and winter at the club, especially January.
Cat Majetic, a partner with Centreville Shipping and Services located in Centreville, would like to see a Dollar Tree come to town. She enjoys going to that store at other locations, and would like to be able to shop at a store that has a lot of product for great prices. She has been with the Centreville Shipping for 5 years and looks forward to many more.

Sean Galvin, an enthusiastic server at Good Guys Sportsbar and Casual Ital-ian in Centreville, would love to be able to partake in a meal with friends at an Applebee’s, a Chili’s or some other similar type restaurant. He says that something with a bar would be nice to have in town, where locals could talk and mingle. An added plus is that they have pay-per-view events there, and he would like to see more of those avail-able. Sean has been with Good Guys for the last 6 months, and prior to that, worked in Baltimore and other surround-ing locations.
Elizabeth Gowe, the owner of Queenstown Service Center, has a different take on the topic. As a longtime resident of Queenstown, she believes that the town is ne just the way it is. She adds that once the new Royal Farms store is built on Route 301, things will change and traf c will become more congested on the highway itself and other arteries coming off of it.

The Dirty Truth About Fleas(ARA) - When eas are spotted in the home, it’s our pets that take the blame. But did you know that for every ea you see, there could be a much bigger problem hiding in the bedding, carpets, furniture and oorboards of your home? The truth is, ea eggs, maggot-like larvae and pupae represent 95 percent of a ea infestation, and they thrive not on your pet, but in the places your pet likes to snuggle - on the couch, under the porch, even in your bed.A problem waiting to hatchWithin as little as eight weeks, just two eas can produce up to 2,000 eggs. Your pet shakes these tiny white specs off himself and into your home where they quickly develop into maggot-like larvae and spin silken cocoons, becoming pupae. In their pupae stage, eas can lay dor-mant for up to a year waiting for the right conditions to hatch into adults. That means, as long as you have eggs, larvae and pupae hiding in your home, you’re always at risk for a sudden, itchy infestation. Consider these uncomfortable facts from SentinelPet.com:* The adult eas a pet owner sees represent only 5 percent of the ea population. The other 95 percent - eggs, maggot-like larvae and pupae - hide in your home.* A female ea can lay up to 50 eggs a day.* Eggs hatch into maggot-like larvae in two to four days.* Larvae are repelled by light and burrow into the bers, cracks and crevasses of your home.* In their cocoon stage, eas can lie dormant in your home for up to a year.
Why infestations thriveMost ea products only treat adult eas. The eggs, larvae and pupae are allowed to thrive in your home, hatching into repeated adult infestations. Not only do many products fail to prevent an infestation, they also leave a sticky residue on your pet that can wash away, or rub off onto furniture, carpets and even children. To truly prevent an infestation, you must break the ea life cycle. And that means killing ea eggs and larvae before they become adults.Break the cycleThe way to prevent a ea infestation is to rid your home of developing ea populations. That means making sure those ea eggs never develop into nasty maggot-like larvae. Many vet-erinarians prescribe an insect growth regulator to stop ea eggs from hatching. When female eas feed on your pet’s blood, they’ll pass on potent killing power to their eggs and any exist-ing larvae that feed on excreted blood. Products like SENTINEL (milbemycin oxime/lufenuron) Flavor Tabs even combine ea prevention with heartworm and internal parasite protection in one monthly tablet. Before peak ea season hits this fall, talk to your veterinarian about making sure your home isn’t playing host to a vicious ea infestation cycle. To locate a veterinarian or get more information on protecting your pet and family from parasites, visit www.SentinelPet.com. Dogs must be tested for heartworm prior to use. In a small percentage of treated dogs, digestive, neurologic, and skin side effects may occur. Please see full product insert for more information.

In Today’s Job Market, it is JobOn By Ron Stafford
In today’s economy and job market, many people are looking for whatever type of work is available in a range of industries. The standard job-search experience is to complete multiple applications for various potential employers and then wait to be contacted for an interview. The employer must sift through large numbers of employ-ment applications trying to nd the most quali ed candidates. JobOn changes all of this.JobOn simpli es the application and se-lection process for both employer and job seeker using online job search and video interview technology. CEO and co-founder
Jody Presit says it is easy. “All the job applicant needs is a camera-equipped computer or Smartphone. They then log in to JobOn and begin the online video-based inter-view.” Jody graduated from Archbishop Spalding High School here in Severn MD and went on to attend the prestigious Wharton School at the University of Pennsylva-nia. After college, he worked his way up the corporate ladder, directing sales and mar-keting at various online companies. From January 2002 to May 2011, he was National Director of Enterprise Sales at Dice, a staf ng and recruiting company. After leaving Dice and with the help of co-founder Dave Atherton and Chief Marketing Of cer Chris Orand, JobOn was born. The company’s goal is to help both employers and employees nd the right t for a job by using video for the application and interview processes. The old way of
going to the Annapolis Mall, lling out applications and waiting for the interview call is gone. Using JobOn.com and webcam or a Smartphone, the job seeker records video
responses to a set of common interview questions. They then select the jobs from an array of businesses and submit the responses. “The employer is able to select the most quali ed applicants from the record-ed interviews and then schedule face-to-face interviews,” Jody adds. “Our client base is growing by about 200 clients a month. They range from the Quzinos on Kent Island to a Walmart in North Dakota.“ Jody and his team tested JobOn on Kent Island before making it available statewide. By Thanksgiving, he’s hoping to take this nationwide, reaching a client base of a thousand or more by January 2012. JobOn charges $25 a month for a business to participate. Jody offers, “This was built around rural communities with the thought that a professional experience can be available for hourly workers.” It is truly a win-win on both sides. The job seek-er uses less gas and time by using JobOn, and the employer actually hears and sees the applicant before scheduling more interviews and hiring the best quali ed candidate. JobOn also is available at shopping malls where there’s a high concentration of jobs for hourly and seasonal employment. The system also can be customized for companies wanting to use an exclusive private-label offering. JobOn can be made available on employer-branded terminals in the big-box stores or other companies that employ 50 or more people. The responses that Jody and his team have received have been fantastic. They are looking for more clients both close to home and nationally. Local schools offering career programs also have heralded the work Jody and his company are doing. “This concept will go everywhere. You can log on and do the interview quickly without the added stress of driving from place-to-place,“ Jody says. “And, employers can actually see and listen to their next possible hire.” Jody sees the next few years as very promising for JobOn as it helps an increasing number of employees and employers connect. “Video is the next battleground, and we want to change the lives of 70 million hourly workers nationwide. We want to provide both these job seekers and their potential employers with a positive and time-saving experience.” For more information on Jody Presti and his great team at JobOn, contact their headquarters in Leesburg VA by calling 800-964-8698, or visit their website at JobOn.com. You also can view an informative and enjoyable video presented by Jody by logging onto http://bcove.me/p0mp9o1t.

Sudlersville Food Pantry Critically Short of Food for Winter Season
The Sudlersville Food Pantry, housed at Calvary-Asbury United Methodist Church in Sudlersville has nearly empty shelves and is in desperate need of donations. The pantry serves an average of 65 families on a monthly basis, 12 months a year. This Thanksgiving
season that number is expected to nearly double to 120 families. Says food pantry coordinator Billie Carroll, “We are providing food for more families in our area than ever and our shelves are nearly empty right now.” The Sudlersville Food Pantry is the only pantry serving residents of Northern Queen Anne’s County. On Saturday, November 19th from 10 AM until Noon, the Sudlersville Youth Group together with the food pantry volunteers will be conducting a Thanksgiving food drive at Calvary-Asbury UMC. Items that are collected are used to provide an additional Thanksgiving food basket, in addition to the regular November food pack-age. Families receive a turkey and all the xings that go with a traditional Thanksgiv-ing meal. The cost of this project is over $2000.00, in addition to the monthly food expenses the food pantry incurs throughout the year. The youth group is asking for community help by providing any of the fol-lowing items: 10-15 pound turkey, pie, stuf ng, green beans, mashed potato, gravy, sweet potato, or cranberry sauce. Any additional non-perishable items would be very much welcomed to help stock the food pantry through the winter season when demand is at its highest. Any items may be dropped off on Saturday, November 19th between 10 AM and Noon at Calvary-Asbury UMC, 103 North Church St, Sudlersville. Cash donations are welcome in lieu of food items. Checks can be made payable to “Sudlers-ville Food Pantry” and mailed to PO Box 202, Sudlersville, MD 21668. All donations are welcome and appreciated.

MONEY FOR ROADS AND STREETS A legislative commission is expected to release its rec-ommendations for nding money to repair state roads. Triple-A’s Lon Anderson is a member of the commission, and he says the biggest issue for lawmakers is to stop balancing the budget with money meant for roads and bridges. In April the legislature and governor used $100-million meant for roads to balance other parts of the 2012 scal year budget. The formal recommen-dations are expected to include an increase in the state’s gasoline tax and a bump in vehicle registration and other fees.
DRIVERS LICENSE SUSPENSIONS UP The number of drivers licenses suspended by the state of Maryland is up this year. From January to September, there has been a 35-percent spike in suspensions compared to the same time frame last year, nearly 90,000 drivers li-censes. The Annapolis Capital reports some say it is because the state no longer automatically assigns a court date for minor traf c tickets. If the ticket goes unpaid while the driver waits for a court date, their license is automatically suspended.
NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR NEEDED The search is on for a new executive director of the Chester River Association. Bob Parks of Rock Hall, who has been executive director since No-vember 2005, announced he will step down at the end of this year. “It’s time for new ideas,” said Parks, 66. He said the end of the calendar year is the proper time for such a change because it marks the end of CRA’s scal year.
PIPKIN HAPPY WITH SPECIAL SESSION RESULTS Last week’s special legislative session was not all about redistricting. State Senator EJ Pipkin and 36D-Delegate Steve Hershey re-portedly led many bills. One even called for abolishing MdTA. Pipkin says many bills did not get heard, but says they did put Governor O’Malley on notice that the Eastern Shore Delegation was not going to roll over when it came to local issues like transportation and septic system improvements.
DELMARVA POWER CRACKS DOWN ON COPPER THIEVES Delmarva Power reminds the public of the dangers of attempting to steal copper and other wire from the company’s lines, substations and equipment yards.“The theft of copper and wire from utility lines and electrical equipment can be life threatening to those who are attempting to remove it and can endanger others by leaving an unsafe condition,” said John Allen, Delmarva Power Vice President. “If
ground wires have been stolen or fences cut that expose dangerous electrical equipment, any-one near the area could accidently get injured or killed.”
Altering the lines also impairs the reliability of the electric distribution system. Customers could experience uneven voltage, which can cause power outages as well as damage to electronic equipment and light bulbs. Approximately 37,000 customers recently experienced a power out-age that was the result of theft and vandalism at a substation in Bethany Beach, DE.
Theft of company materials means that Delmarva Power crews must spend many hours repair-ing equipment, safeguarding facilities and replacing stolen wire. The repair and replacement cost of damaged equipment far exceeds the scrap value received for the wire. To address the copper and wire theft, Delmarva Power is implementing additional security measures. Anyone with information about electric utility copper or wire theft is encouraged to contact Delmarva Power (1-800-375-7117) or local authorities.
LANDLORD LEAD-PAINT PROTECTION UNCONSTITUTIONAL Maryland’s highest court ruled a state law shielding landlords from civil lawsuits in lead-paint poisoning cases is uncon-stitutional. The Court of Appeals declared that the 1994 law violated the state’s Constitution by denying adequate legal protection to victims. Attorneys for lead-poisoned children are saying they will now be able to sue for damages.
BOE MEETS TO DISCUSS PASS/FAIL FOR STUDENT ATHLETES The State Board of Edu-cation discussed academic standards for Maryland’s public school athletes at its monthly meet-ing. The state legislature is requiring the panel to recommend minimum standards by year’s end. Regulations currently on the books call on each individual school district to set minimum academic standards. State leaders want one uniform policy in place.
