A TALE OF TWO BUSINESSES

A few days ago, we received a call at the Update from a lovely woman by the name of Lovetta Nolan. Here’s her story… It was the July 4th weekend, and her son-in-law needed four new tires for his car. To save money, he thought he would buy them online. When he took the tires to Centreville Auto and Truck Center to get the tires installed, owners Paul and Joe said they would not charge him much for installation. It was then discovered that two of the tires bought online were cracked. The owners said that they would take care of it. The bill was very cheap, and Joe gave her son $20 back for some gas he needed to get home. Approximately four weeks later on August 5, Lovetta’s son got into a bad ac-cident at the light at Routes 213 and 301. She called on Paul and Joe again, and they referred her son to Queenstown Collision Center. Lovetta had met Al, the owner, in the past, and very soon, the employees of the business picked up the car, brought her son home, and then went to work on fixing the car. They worked with his insurance company and told him to forget about paying the deductible. Lovetta, who has lived on the Shore for the last 13 years, said she and her son had not worked with either business before. She also mentioned that both businesses give an old-time flair to the way they go about their work. Why is she telling us this? To quote an old movie line, she wants to “pay it forward” and let the rest of the community know what a great job both businesses, Centreville Auto and Truck Center and Queen-stown Collision Center, did for her and her family.

We have had an idea on the back burner for quite some tie now, and the opportunity just presented itself to help us move the idea to the front burner! We received a call yesterday from a lady named Ms. Nolan... here’s the message that was taken: “A sweet, older lady called in (Ms. Nolan) and spent a good 15 minutes tell-ing me her wonderful story. She has no money due to health issues... her car recently broke down... then her son was in a horrible car accident shortly after.... She wanted to tell us how Chesapeake Truck and Auto Center and Queenstown Collision treated her like gold. Knowing her ordeal, both businesses charged her next to nothing for their services. She was hoping she could ‘pay it forward’ so-to-speak by seeing if we would spotlight them in our paper.” This was the opportunity we were unknowingly waiting for and “A COM-MUNITY THAT CARES WAS BORN...” We encourage you to do “random acts of kindness”... share them with us and be entered in a drawing to win a “BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL CERTIFICATE.” No big deeds need to be done... letting someone who is rushed ahead of you in the grocery store line, helping someone load their packages into their car, surprising a co-worker with a cup of coffee... Here’s all you have to do: Perform a simple act of kindness and share it with us on Facebook. At the end of each month, we will randomly choose one participant to win the prize of the month!

Hi Cheri,I called you this morning inquiring about placing an ad in for Roni’s 15 year anniversary coming up in October. You were very kind to offer this ad free of charge. Hearing how you spoke of Roni made me realize how many people she affects, not just her em-ployees! I have worked for Roni for 9 years and have seen not only how her business has developed, but how she has grown as a business owner. Needless to say, I was not surprised to see she was a winner of the “favorite Business Owners” here on the Shore. After talking with the staff, there are 15 of us, we wanted to do something special for Roni and thought we would surprise her with the ad. We just want her to know how special she is to us!! We would like for the ad to be signed “from her loving staff” if possible. I can’t thank you enough for your help on this!!Bonnie Blattenberger, Kennel ManagerCanine Country Club

It was mid-December, cold out and I had just woken up from hosting a Christmas party which turned into a kid sleep-over. With an early morning activity looming, we were all tired, hungry and running late. I shoved all the kids in the car and headed out single-mindedly focusing on our morning activities. Like little birds, they whined about their empty stomachs. I promised them they wouldn’t starve and we would hit the drive through right after the post office. With coffee in-hand, I made a mad dash into the post office to mail a Christmas package to my grandmother. As you can imagine, the post office was full, and the ticking clock in my head just got louder and louder. When I got to the counter, the postal worker smiled, wished me a Merry Christmas and commented, “Boy that coffee smells good.” Heading back outdoors into the blistering cold, I decided to ward off the natives and go buy her a cup of coffee. I was met with scowls and complaints as their fun-filled morning was deterred yet again. When I returned to the post office to deliver the steaming-hot coffee, her eyes twinkled. The only words that passed between us were “Merry Christmas” and “Thank you,” but her look said so much more. A few days later, I got the most beautiful thank you card in the mail from her... I’m guessing she got my address off the package I delivered. I was so touched by her kindness that I decided to make these random acts a part of my every day. Kindness is free to give and priceless to receive. Try it, you’ll be hooked too. Until next time, Cheri

Corsica Watershed Awareness DaySeptember 17th

Corsica Watershed Awareness Day will be held September 17th from noon to 4 p.m. at Bloomfield Farm on Route 213, just north of Centreville. This event gives people of all ages an opportunity to reconnect with the river that makes the area a special place to live or visit. This free event combines family fun with engaging environmental education. The “fun” part includes tours of the historic farmhouse, a variety of tasty food offerings, hayrides, pony rides, pet-ting zoo, pond fishing, face painting, pumpkin painting, and creative craft ac-tivities for children. Lively musical entertainment will be offered throughout the day by Chester River Runoff, a dynamic local bluegrass group that mixes original Chesapeake songs with unique takes on traditional favorites. The first 150 families attending the event will be given a free native tree. A raffle will also be held with the prize being a kayak and related equip-ment. Rain barrels will also be sold by the Town of Centreville for only $10, one per household. Per grant documents, rain barrels must be installed within the Corsica River Watershed. Sponsors of the event are the Corsica River Conservancy, Queen Anne’s County Parks and Public Landings, and the Town of Centreville. Ex-hibitors, including the Maryland Departments of Natural Resources, Environ-ment, Agriculture and Planning, as well as Town, County and local organiza-tions, will display information on rain gardens, oyster restoration, storm water management, river testing results, living shorelines, land preservation, cover crop programs, septic system upgrades, and other environmental issues. The Corsica Antique Tractor Club will be exhibiting. Back by popular demand will be Scales and Tales with their wild life exhibit and the Fishmobile from Phil-lip’s Wharf. Bloomfield Farm, now owned by Queen Anne’s County, is still be-ing farmed; some wetlands have been restored; hundreds of trees have been planted; a fishing pond and community sports fields have been installed. The home at Bloomfield farm, a large brick house, dates to the early 1800s. Similar to the side-hall, double-parlor townhouses popular in that era, the house has retained much of its original Federal-style woodwork. The Corsica Watershed Awareness Day is part of the outreach efforts of the Corsica River Conservancy, a local group of volunteers dedicated to restoring and preserving the Corsica River and its watershed. For more than seven years the Conservancy has conducted independent water quality testing on the Corsica River. The data collected is used by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to assess the condition of the river and the effects of the restoration efforts. Volunteers from CRC initiate and participate in restoration activities designed to improve the quality of the river. Among these activities are shoreline restoration, tree planting and the installation of rain gardens. The Conservancy builds community awareness and commitment by speaking to local schools, business and civic organizations, and community groups; host-ing public meetings; publishing articles in local newspapers; mailing periodic reports to members and other citizens; and maintaining a website. The goal of those sponsoring the Corsica Watershed Awareness Day is to foster awareness among community members of what can be done to restore the quality of the river while providing a thoroughly enjoyable fall afternoon for the participants and volunteers. Answer our “QUESTION of the WEEK” at facebook.com/theshoreupdate

About Townwith Ron

“What do you think about fees for Sports in schools?”

Margie Hendricks, an employee of Busy Bodies Children’s Gym in Stevensville, does not agree with the new sports pol-icy as stated by Queen Anne’s County Public Schools. She does not think it’s fair to either the student or the parent. While working at Busy Bodies, she had heard many mothers talking about the issue. Having been with Busy Bodies for the last 4 years, Margie, a parent her-self, has a sense of how parents in the community are feeling about this topic.

Kate Shanks, who works at Hair Express in Centreville, does not agree with the new sports policy with QACPS. She hopes that the money obtained will go into the sports directly, and not into some fund for other activities not related to sports. Also, a proud mother of 2 boys, Landon and Lincoln, ages 3 years and 4 months, she hopes that the money accumulated will be put to good use.

Beth Moored, who works at the Swan Cove Salon and Day Spa in Stevensville, thinks it’s ridiculous to have students pay a fee to be involved in ath-letics. She has two daughters who currently play sports in Caroline County, and she tells the Up-date that they, who are a freshman in high school and a 7th grader in middle school, enjoy the sports they are in. Beth also told us that afford-ability is an issue. The school systems want kids to be more active, yet she believes that in Queen Anne’s County, they are now having to charge them for being so. In addition, she thought that the school booster program should step in, and help out in this situation.

Lindsay Presti of Stevensville says that now with this new policy it will be hard to some parents to afford for their child to be involved in sports. Pictured here with her daughter, Claire, Lind-say told us that many parents will now have to choose between sports and other activities in which their children might be involved. Currently working in private practice as a psychothera-pist in Stevensville, she knows that sports are often used an outlet for children of low-income families. Now, with this new policy, that decision will be even more difficult. We appreciate her time taking the time to speak with us in the midst of playtime with Claire at Busy Bodies.

Paula Morris, an employee of Carter’s clothing store located in the Queenstown Premium Outlets, thinks the new policy is crazy, and that students and families should not have to pay for something that many enjoy doing. A proud mother of a 3 year old girl, Hanna, and a 6 month old boy, Steven, she somewhat jokingly told us that her children, when they get older, will not go to school, if she has to end up paying for extras, such as participation in sports.

FiND ThE QUiCK RESPONSE (QR) CODESHoffman Publishing is always looking for ways to improve service for both our customers and our advertisers. Our newest venture is the use of QR Codes embedded within advertising. With the appropriate app downloaded to your iPhone, Android, Blackberry or similar device, you are able to read the code that will then link your device to a web site. The one shown here will link you to our Shore

Update web site. Look quickly through this issue and see if you can locate all the QR Codes. A QR Code is in fact a type of bar code made up of black modules ar-ranged within a square pattern. Encoded within this block you may find data such as links to web sites or to Facebook, email addresses, contact informa-tion, and much more. Look through magazines or newspapers you receive. Begin noticing all the advertisements with embedded QR Codes. In fact, on a recent trip to Home Depot to buy mums, the plant identifier stuck in the dirt contained a QR Code. When I read the code with my iPhone app, it took me directly to the Home Depot site and information about the mums. QR Codes are just beginning to make their presence known here in the U.S. They have been used for many years in Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and some European countries as marketing tools. In Japan, all cell phones are able to scan QR Codes and QR Codes can be found everywhere, including banners and business signs throughout the country. For example, McDonalds uses them In Japan to display nutrition for it is food products.

The downloaded app for the cell phone is either free or there is a nominal charge ($.99). Once the app is downloaded, reading a QR Code is almost in-stantaneous and may provide details about a business, show a URL with a link to see a movie trailer, or it may present a coupon to use in a local outlet. The options are many!! QR Codes truly are very exciting and just fun to use….like any new and advanced technology. Hoffman Publishing is very excited to begin using QR Codes to help our local businesses promote themselves and to make infor-mation more readily available to you, our readers.
