Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Wet Basement?We have the

solution for all your basement needs!

Free EstimatesLifetime Guarantee

In the United States, renovation spending has more than doubled since the late 1990s, reaching nearly $65 billion last year alone. Oftentimes the investment a homeowner makes is substantial, both financially and emotionally. The stakes are high. That’s why it’s imperative that the job is done well from start to finish. There are a number of steps a homeowner can take to ensure a positive experience and a successful outcome, including: 1. Know your goal. Ask the question, “What is this renovation designed to accomplish? More functionality? Storage? Living space?” If a homeowner doesn’t know where they’re going with the renovation, chances are they’ll never get there. 2. Do your research. In most things, knowledge is power, and knowing what to expect, in advance, can keep expectations in check. Investigate options, budgets and timelines, and ar-range financing in advance. 3. Hire professionals. Be sure that they are happy to work with you to meet your budget and achieve your vision. Communicate clearly and often to ensure understanding on both sides. 4. Opt for a general contractor and trades that are experienced, licensed and insured. Don’t hesitate to check credentials and references. Get recommendations from family, friends and colleagues who have had work done and were satisfied with the results. 5. Start with quality building materials. When it comes to home renovation and construc-tion, the adage, “it’s what’s on the inside that counts” seems apt. While homeowners tend to get caught up in the aesthetics of a project, such as finishings and paint colors, the key to a successful renovation often lies in what you won’t see. Investing in quality behind your walls will ensure durability, comfort and safety for years to come. 6. Focus on the basics. This includes quality electrical, plumbing, HVAC, framing and dry-wall. Don’t underestimate the importance of insulation - especially in a basement renovation. Not all insulation is created equal. Opt for insulation that is fire-resistant, sound absorbent and resistant to mold, mildew, bacterial growth, and rot. In my renovations, I like to use prod-ucts like Roxul’s Comfortbatt and Comfortboard IS to help achieve a more energy efficient home, buy you valuable time in the event of a fire and prevent moisture issues that can pose health risks and lead to costly repairs.

Planting a vegetable garden can be a worthwhile endeavor for anyone who has an available patch of land. Gardens need not take up much space, and even apartment dwellers without yards can plant small gardens in containers they place on ter-races or window boxes. Although establishing a garden is easy enough, beginners may make a few mistakes along the way. Those who al-ready have paved the garden way before can offer novice gardeners some worth-while tips. One of the first decisions novice gar-deners must make is which crops to grow. This will help determine how much land you will need and which supplies or soil amendments will be necessary. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, a common error for beginners is planting too much and more than anyone could ever consume, so it’s best to start small and be proud of that small garden. Plants such as peppers, squash and tomatoes produce throughout the season, so you may not need many plants to provide for your needs. Less prolific plants may require a great-

er investment to produce a similar yield. Locate your garden in an area that gets adequate sun. Many vegetables need between six and eight hours of sunlight per day. Without enough light, they will not bear as much and could be susceptible to insect infestation. Vegetables and fruit also need plenty of water because they’re not very drought-

tolerant, so keep gardens close to a water source.

Another good tip is to locate the garden near the house or barbecue grill. This way you can easily harvest fresh

produce and use it when cooking. Soil preparation is also key. Till the soil and

remove debris like rocks, sticks and hard clumps of dirt. Work with organic

material, such as manure or compost. Apply mulch after plant-ing to help maintain moisture levels in the soil. Plant the tallest crops at the rear of your garden bed. Work forward with shorter crops. Try to leave a foot or more between planting rows. It’s easy to get a garden started and enjoy fresh food for many months to come.

19Shopper’s Guide | Friday, April 10, 2015 Potluck on the Patio, Tuesday, April 14

With the theme “Potluck on the Patio,” the 37th annual Indiana’s Cookin’ show will offer demonstrations and tasty tidbits that “are not your grandma’s potluck recipes,” organizers say. The year’s event will be Tuesday — with an early show at 4 p.m. and a late show at 7 p.m. — at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex’s Toretti Auditorium. All proceeds from the show’s ticket and raffle sales benefit Indiana County Community

Action Program’s food bank. Doors open at 3 p.m. for the vendor fair, where vendors will offer samples and items for sale until 7 p.m. Demonstrations dur-ing the show will focus on “all kinds of neat twists on food you can take to picnics and barbecues,” said Debbie Palmer, The Indiana Gazette’s marketing director. Former Gazette staff writer Sam Ku-sic will return as this year’s master of ceremonies. Each of the shows will have two

segments. For the first half, culinary students under the direction of Executive Chef Andrew P. Nutter of Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Culinary Institute will demon-strate an appetizer, entrée, vegetable and dessert. Samples of these foods will be provided for the audience to taste. Recipes include soups, such as Buttermilk Corn Cold Soup with Shrimp, salads such as Antipasto, an entrée of Marinated Grilled Tuna

and more. For the second half, with a segment called “Fast and Furious,” Diane Wagoner, of IUP’s Department of Food and Nutrition, and her students will show less time-intensive recipes geared toward people on the go. The demonstrations will show “a medley of every-thing quick and easy,” Palmer said, such as South-western Slaw, Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce and Linda’s Tasty Turkey Burgers. Another highlight of the show is the vendor fair, Palmer said. There are a variety of vendors onsite, from cater-ers to decorators, with some providing free samples. Normally, about 25 to 30 vendors attend the event. And that’s not all. There are raffles and prizes, and everyone in attendance will receive a cookbook and gift bag. Always popular are the “Winner Gets All” tables, where participants win all the items on tables decorated with different themes. “It’s a blast,” Palmer said. “It’s simply a good time.”Tickets for the show are $8 and can be purchased at The Indiana Gazette office at 899 Water St., Indi-ana, by mail through a form published regularly in the paper and the Shopper’s Guide, or at the KCAC box office. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Call it a sign of the times or just plain good luck for those of us yearning to swap fast food fare for some tasty home cooking. Potluck gatherings are back and one of this year’s hottest trends in entertaining. Although these communal “luck of the pot” meals (where everyone brings their favorite dish) hearken back to the late 19th century, they found their footing in the mid-1950’s when it seemed like every mom in the neighborhood was filling cas-serole dishes for church socials and family get-togethers. “There are three primary reasons driving the return of potluck — our schedules, the economy and childhood memo-ries,” says Chef Jeff Gillis, www.CelebratingHome.com. “We live such fast-paced lives that divvying up the cooking makes home entertaining more realistic than putting all of the burden on the hostess. Making one dish instead of several also helps

stretch the budget — something we’re all looking to do these days. And, let’s face it — after years of dashing through the drive-thru, wouldn’t you like to sit down to some home-cooked food, even if it’s only once a week?”Got potluck fever but not a clue what to do? Here are four tips that’ll make your next gathering both tasty and stylish, plus, a family-fave recipe that’ll put your home on the map as potluck heaven.

ORGANIZE PARTICIPANTSDivide the meal by categories so guests will have a balance of appetizers, entrées, sides and desserts from which to choose. Cooks needn’t commit to a specific recipe but it’s helpful to know up-front that a well-rounded meal is in the making.

CHOOSE EASY-FIX, CROWD-PLEASING RECIPESTo appeal to guests varying tastes, save the exotic for later and dust off mom’s (or grand-ma’s) cookbook. Traditional potluck dishes like casseroles, chili, soup, bread and cakes are always popular and easy to make.

DRESS UP THE TABLERemember the special tablecloth mom used

BEAN POT BEEF STEWThis twist on an American favorite yields a hearty, flavorful entrée that takes less prep time because it slow cooks in the oven in a bean pot.1 pound round steak, cut into bite-sized pieces1 large yellow onion, roughly chopped2 tablespoons olive oil4 cloves garlic, chopped fine1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes6 cups beef broth (or stock)1½ teaspoons dried thyme3 bay leaves2 cups potatoes, cubed

1 cup celery, diced1 cup carrots, dicedSalt and pepper to taste

Rub steak with olive oil and coat with salt and pepper. Let steak sit at room temperature in bean pot while preparing all other vegetables. Chop and dice everything, then add to bean pot. Add beef broth (or stock), thyme, bay leaves, diced tomatoes and salt and pepper. Cover and bake in 375 F oven for 3 to 4 hours until meat is tender.Recipe courtesy of www.CelebratingHome.com

Over time a car’s exterior can fade or suffer some dings and dents. Before owners sell or trade in their rides for something new, investing in a new color may be all that’s necessary to revitalize the look of the vehicle. Changing the color of a car is not something every driver should try on their own. Such a task can be time-consuming, and it requires a good deal of skill to turn out looking good. Fur-thermore, painting a car involves a variety of different tools and equipment, from a spray gun, sander and buffer to specific types of enamel or acrylic paints. After considering the work involved and the expense of investing in the equipment to get the job done right, many vehicle owners opt to hire a professional to change the color of their vehicles. Many service centers offer two options to change the look of a car or truck: painting and car wraps.

PAiNT jOB A professional paint job will yield an impressive result. A skilled auto painter can recommend the right type of automotive paint for your make and model and guide you in color selections. While there are hundreds of different color choices available, professionals also may be able to mix colors to create the custom look you desire. Paint work may be done to match the existing color of the vehicle after accident repairs have been made. Or you may be tired with the color of your car and simply desire a change. Expe-rienced service shops can offer these services and more. Other shops may specialize in custom paint jobs that may entail graphics, detail work or the blending of multiple colors to give the vehicle an airbrushed effect. Custom painters are artists, and their work may be very detailed.

Painting may demand your vehicle be off the road for a week or more, so it’s best to have an alternative travel plan. Also, be sure to investigate how painting will affect the value of the ve-hicle. A paint job may end up depreciating the value of a resale because it’s changing the original vehicle permanently.

CAr WrAP Car wraps are typically made of high-quality vinyls that come in a bevy of different colors and styles. Wraps also can be used for custom graphics or to advertise businesses. The vinyl wrap completely covers the paint of the vehicle. But because car wraps can be re-moved, they do not permanently change the vehicle and are therefore unlikely to affect its resale value. Car wrapping can take less time than a labor-intensive paint job. Some jobs can be completed in only two or three days. Car wraps also may be the less expensive option if you’re not selecting a complicated, custom design. Many car wraps will last between five to seven years, which is on par with the life span of a professional paint job, which lasts five to 10 years. Changing the look of a vehicle may be as simple as choosing a new exterior color. Professional paint services and vinyl car wraps make it easy to switch up the style of a car or truck.

OThe move is on to produce more fuel-efficient automobiles. Although alterna-tive fuels have garnered significant pub-licity in recent years, some automakers are simply shrinking the standard car engine. Automakers have been producing three-cylinder engines for some time, but are just now starting to reveal such engines to the public. While these types of engines have traditionally been asso-ciated with lawn mowers, mopeds and snowmobiles, a handful of cars are now being equipped with three-cylinder en-gines to increase fuel efficiency. While three-cylinder engines have had the unfortunate stereotype of be-ing puny next to vehicles touting more

under the hood, experts say that ad-vances in engine technology have made it possible for three-cylinder engines to produce more power with less. Ford, Nissan and BMW are just some of the automakers experimenting with three-cylinder engines while also promoting other innovations to boost efficiency. Streamlined aerodynamics, carbon fiber and improved horsepower can change public perceptions of cars with engines that have fewer cylinders. In addition to requiring less fuel, three-cylinder engines take up less space in engine compartments, freeing up more room for interior passenger space. This can create more space in traditionally compact vehicles. Smaller engines can

improve safety because there is less risk that the engine will penetrate the inte-rior in a front-end collision. While some three-cylinder vehicles have lackluster responses with accelera-tion and road performance, others offer comparable horsepower to some larger engines. According to the automotive website Jalopnik, many modern three-cylinder engines offer power comparable to that offered by V8 engines in the 1970s. The three-cylinder offerings may be concentrated to a few brands right now, but the advantages of these smaller en-gines may make them more prevalent in the years to come.

Small engines may have big futures

A backyard swimming pool is a welcome respite from the hot sun and summer heat waves. Pools provide exercise and enjoyment for those of mostly every age. This is what makes a pool installation a popular home improvement project. Once you have established the size, type and shape of the swimming pool, you want and have secured the proper building permits and con-tractors to install the pool, your next main task could be to take a crash course in pool water chemistry. A pool is essentially useless without clean, hygienic water. Achieving clean water starts by understanding what is necessary to keep pool wa-ter clear and safe for swimming, and knowing the terminology related to testing pool water. There are several chemical levels with which a pool owner should be familiar. Here are the basics behind each one.

Chlorine Even the most wet-behind-the-ears pool owner knows that he or she will need a disinfecting agent in the pool, which is commonly

a chlorine-based product. Chlorine serves as a sanitizer that kills off germs and keeps the pool safe. There are many different types of chlorine sanitizers on the market, from liquid chlorinator to slow-dissolving tablets to powdered forms that must be dissolved in water. In terms of checking chlorine levels, you should be familiar with free chlorine, or FC, combined chlorine (CC) and total chlorine (TC). Free chlorine refers to the active amount of chlorine in the pool wa-ter that is available to sanitize it. Organic matter in the pool as well as sunlight can use up free chlorine very quickly. It is good to habitually check the FC chlorine level on a daily basis and add as needed to keep the level adequate for your size pool. It is best to add chlorine to raise FC in the evening when it will not be affected by sunlight. Combined chlorine is the broken-down amount of chlorine used in the pool -- in other words the used-up chlorine. This is what causes the “chlorine smell” many people associate with over-chlorinated pools. In essence, a chlorine smell means that your pool likely needs

more available fresh chlorine. CC indicates there is something in the pool that the FC is trying to break down. As long as you maintain an appropriate FC level, CCshould remain at near zero. Total chlorine is the sum of FC and CC in pool water. When you use an inexpensive water test that only measures one form of chlo-rine, it is likely TC. This is usually adequate for testing if the water is clear. However, in the presence of algae or another water problem, TC level is useless on its own as a

b a -rometer of water quality.

pH and Total Alkalinity The proper pH, or balance of alkalinity or acidity of the water, must be maintained to prevent irritation of the skin and eyes and to prevent corrosion of the pool equipment. Many pools tend to drift upward to the high level over time. This may result in eye burning that is often blamed on chlorine levels. The pH is raised with borax or washing soda (often the same chemical used in pH “Up” in pool stores), and it can be lowered using muriatic acid. Total alkalinity is the water’s ability to buffer pH changes. This means you’ll need less product to change the pH. The level of TA-needed varies depending on the type of pool material (plaster or vinyl). In general, pH levels between 70 and 90 are fine for most pools.

Working mothers have a lot on their plates. In addition to the responsibilities that come with raising a family, working moms also must focus on their careers. Many mothers find that managing such hectic balancing acts leaves little time for physical fitness. But there are ways for working moms to stay physically fit even as they juggle their commitments to career and family.

· Work out in the early morning. Working out in the early morning, when the kids are still asleep and the office has yet to open, is a great way for busy working mothers to get their daily exercise. Designate a room in your home where you can spend time each morning doing some light strength training before hitting the treadmill or elliptical machine. The United States Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week, and women who get up just 45 minutes earlier each morning can meet those requirements and then some. An added benefit to working out in the early morning is that many people who follow such regimens insist they have more energy throughout the rest of the day.

· Have a backup plan on hand. Working out at a gym can be motivational, as many mothers want to make sure their monthly membership fees aren’t going to waste. But there will inevitably be days when working mothers can’t get to the gym. Prepare for such days by purchasing home workout DVDs you can play while the kids are doing their homework or after they have gone to bed.

· Look for gyms with childcare. Many gyms now offer on-site childcare to parents of young children who can’t stay home alone while their folks are at the gym. Gyms that offer on-site childcare may prove more reliable and even less expensive than hiring a sitter, and some gyms even offer fitness programs to young-sters, helping to ensure kids get the daily exercise they need as well.

· Exercise during lunch breaks. If possible, squeeze in your daily exercise during lunch breaks. Take advantage of on-site exercise facilities if your company offers them. If not, take your lunch outside and then go for a walk around the campus or a nearby park rather than eating at your desk. Finding time to exercise is a common dilemma for working mothers.
