Feature Six Senses Phuket Raceweek 2010

So it is fi tting that one of Phuket’s most popular regattas, Six Senses Phuket Raceweek, should kick off the 2010/2011 Asian Yachting Grand Prix Championship, where Asia’s top racing yachtsmen and women compete over the course of several Asian regattas.

Six Senses Phuket Raceweek, unique in the regional yacht racing calendar for its expectation of strong breezes, scenic race courses and its 5-star social scene, is held at the Evason Phuket & Six Senses Spa from 21-25 July.

As we went to press, entries were looking strong in all classes, with a record number of fi rst-time participants. “With Top of the Gulf and Koh Samui regattas over, we usually get a fl urry of entries from sailors who have been focused on those events,” said Grenville Fordham, MD of organisers and rights owners, Image Asia Events, adding, “It looks as though we’ll have a strong Racing Class this year, although – as usual – we never really know the fi nal line-up until shortly before the event. The logistics and costs of getting a boat and crew ready to take part in an event away from home are horrendous, so quite often boat owners are never sure if they can make it until all the pieces come together.”

To encourage participants to think ahead, Six Senses Phuket Raceweek had an ‘Early Bird’ entry scheme with impressive savings on boat and crew fees for those who registered and paid online. And this year,

While Bangkok was going through its worst spate of unrest in modern times, peaceful Phuket – 900 km south of Thailand’s troubled capital – received a well deserved accolade. Voted 'Best Asian Maritime Capital' in the annual Asian Boating Awards 2010, the island home of four annual regattas and four marinas was fi nally recognised for what it is: THE place in Asia to go boating.

Da Vinci - winners last year, sponsors this year.

Jaguar Cars, coming back year after year.

thanks to sponsor Global Investments (Far East), one lucky early-bird entry will have boat and crew fees refunded in full.

If you thought that a regatta like this is only for the serious racers, think again. “We have separate courses and start lines for cruising yachts so it really doesn’t matter if you’re not the best racer in the world. We fi nd that those cruising yachts who join in have the time of their life – both on the water and off ,” said Fordham, adding that there is a large available fl eet of locally-based yachts available for charter at very reasonable ‘low season’ rates.

Sponsorship is a big part of any sporting event but fi rst fi nding sponsors, and then keeping hem, is a challenge. “We’re proud of the fact that we manage to keep many of our key sponsors, including Six Senses and Jaguar Cars, coming back year after year,” said Fordham.

First time Co-sponsor for 2010 is local restaurant Da Vinci, who hit regatta fame in 2009 by sponsoring Racing Catamaran winner, the

new design Andaman Cabriolet Niña. In response to their win, at the closing party of last year’s event, Da Vinci owners placed an order for a sister yacht, which will be launched just in time to race in the SEA Property Multihull Regatta and Six Senses Phuket Raceweek 2010. “We gained a lot of valuable exposure just by branding and naming a boat last year,” said Da Vinci partner Mark Norris. “Now that we have our own yacht, we decided it made sense to leverage our participation by becoming an event sponsor too. We’re also hosting one of the regatta parties at Da Vinci, so participants get a chance to see who and what we are,” he added.

For the fi rst time, Six Senses Phuket Raceweek will see two boats branded by event co-sponsors (Jaguar Cars and Da Vinci), demonstrating an increasing awareness that combining event and boat sponsorship is the way to achieve maximum brand exposure. “Naturally, as organisers, we maximise the exposure in photographs and TV programming of event sponsors’ branding. Sponsoring the event as well as a racing yacht is the smart way to get more for your money,” said Fordham.

A0 YON AND PHUKET AQUARIUMB

On the west side of Cape Panwa, there is a concrete jetty serving as a base for the Hydrographic, Fisheries, and Marine Biological Departments.

On shore, you will find the Phuket Aquarium. Anchor anywhere in the bay in 6-8 metres on a muddy bottom keeping well clear of the floating peal-farm on the west side. When rounding the cape, use the safe water mark to keep well clear of the off-lying rocks and reefs.

To the northwest lies Ao Yon. This bay offers good shelter in both seasons, has a fine beach and the original Phuket Yacht Club ashore. It is predominantly a dinghy sailing club but many cruising yachts make this bay their base. Enter from the east side of the bay to anchor in 4-6 metres inside the line of the fish farms on a muddy bottom.

CORAL ISLAND (KOH HAE)C

On the north coast of Koh Hae there is a sandy bay with live coral fringing the beach. In the southwest monsoon season, sheltered anchorage is available on a sandy bottom in 8-10 metres.

Beware coral heads on the fringe of the reef rising from depths of up to 6 metres. Ashore, bungalows and restaurants cater to day visitors, while many tour operators bring their customers for snorkelling.

CORAL ISLAND SOUTH D

For a lunchtime stopover, try the small bay in about 14 metres on a rocky bottom on the south side of Koh Hae.

This is a very pleasant anchorage – quiet, nice coral and lots of fish. A small sandy beach with a local styled restaurant is accessible at high tide. There are a few resident hornbills for the nature photographer.

PANWA BALI E

In the northeast season, this is more protected from the chop than the main anchorage directly across Ao Chalong bay. In the southwest season, the anchorage is open to a long fetch across the width of the bay.

A drying coral reef fringes the sandy beach, but there is an access channel at low tide. Two miles further north in Chalong Bay is a mangrove creek, which can be accessed by dinghy from mid-tide leading to a picturesque seafood restaurant on stilts.

Ashore at the anchorage are some private housing developments and some restaurants. Just behind the beach is a road that runs to the top of the mountain to a spectacular viewpoint giving a 360-degree panorama of Phi Phi islands and the south end of Phuket. The trip to Phuket town takes just 15 minutes, though finding transport can be difficult.

AO MAKHAM (DEEP SEA PORT)The sea port terminal, Ao Makham is a channel between Koh Taphao Yai and the main island of Phuket north of Cape Panwa. Having been well dredged during the construction of the Phuket deep-water port, the passages north and south are buoyed and easily navigable.

Fuel and water can be delivered to the quayside by trucks, but this is really only practical for larger vessels, since the wharf is designed for ships so is not kind to topsides of cruising yachts. The port is also the main stopover for cruise liners plying the Andaman Sea and the Malacca straits.

KOH TAPHAO YAI7 miles from Ao Chalong

A

The best anchorage for yachts lies on the north side of Koh Taphao Yai in front of a small resort in 5-8 metres on a muddy bottom. It is safe in all seasons, but can be very choppy in the northeast monsoon.

Not the most picturesque location, it is nevertheless convenient for town. Opposite this anchorage on the main island next to the petroleum depot is a small jetty with a floating pontoon that has road access to Phuket Town.

KOH SIRAYKoh Siray is on the eastern tip of the southern part of Phuket, separated from the main island by a small river – the area’s main fishing depot – and gives access to the island’s main commercial shipyards. These yards mostly take care of local fishing vessels and shallow draft tour boats; but after several years’ experience, they are able – and have the facilities – to handle keelboats. Appropriate cradles are available but bookings must be made in advance.

A photograph or plan of your underwater hull shape will assist the yard foreman in safely slipping your boat. All yards offer electricity, water and transport to town.

If you decide to slip your boat in the local yards, consider seeking advice from one of the marine services companies for the best options. Many projects are under way in the yards, which may be of interest to boat building enthusiasts.

Close to the river bridge (town side) is Tien Sin Pier where ferries depart for Koh Yao Yai twice daily. At the entrance to the river on the west side on reclaimed land is the Rassada passenger terminal, with ferries to Phi Phi and Krabi.

Approaches to Koh Siray

PHUKET RIVER AND SHIPYARDS8 miles from Ao Chalong

A

Pass between Koh Taphao Noi and Koh Taphao Yai, and proceed to the first channel marker shown on the chart. Head towards the second channel buoy and then proceed directly to the headland on the east side of the river entrance.

There are leading marks on shore but this channel is constantly moving, and the best advice we can give is to negotiate the entrance on a three-quarter tide rising and if possible follow a large fishing boat in the river.

There is a light on Laem Tukkae but this approach is inadvisable at night. Once in the waterway, the depth is adequate for most vessels, but the number of boats tied on each side of the river severely restricts its navigable width.

Diesel fuel in large quantities, water, ice, and provisions are available at the fishing port and at the shipyards further upstream on the left and on the right.

This increasingly popular event is expected to attract over 20 entries this year and is a perfect feeder event for Six Senses Phuket Raceweek.

The event is a joint enterprise between SEA Property and the Ao Chalong Yacht Club and comprises three days of racing with four parties. Registration is on Thursday 15 evening hosted by the Ao Chalong Yacht Club. There will be a briefi ng on the Friday at 9am. This is followed by a programme of fi ve races to be held on the Friday (2), Saturday (2) and Sunday (1) with themed evening parties at the Yacht Club sponsored by Sea Bees, Corsair Marine and Derani Yachts. Our logistics sponsors also include Andaman Cabriolet, Latitude 8 and our media partners IMAGE asia, with Wine Elite promising some special prizes.

One of the reasons for the popularity of this event is that in the absence of monohulls, many sailors get the opportunity to experience the exhilarating racing on multihulls for the fi rst time.

South East Asia is an area where multihulls work particularly well and we are delighted to have on board three of the multihull manufacturers from the region. Latitude 8 with the Firefl ys and the Whitehavens, Corsair Marine represented by perhaps as many as 6 or 7 boats and the new design and last year’s Six Senses Phuket Raceweek winner, the Andaman Cabriolet Niña, joined by the latest out of the Composite Catamarans stable, Da Vinci.

We anticipate the full fl eet of Firefl y 850 one design class (9 boats) and the ocean

multihull class is expected to exceed 12 boats. Cruising Multihulls will be included in this year's event with primarily off wind courses. This unrated class will be given handicaps by the local OMR handicapper.

Prizegiving on the Sunday will be around 5pm giving everybody time to prepare for Monday.

There will be longtail boat access to the yachts in the bay and dinghies may be stored at the club.

There will be a full breakfast menu at the club and a lunch pack will be available if ordered on time!

About Chef Laurent Valette:

Even as a boy growing up in Lille, France, Laurent always wanted to be a chef. He studied at the Lille Gourmet Culinary School, from where, after three years, he graduated with distinction. During these early years, he travelled around France learning all the complexities and subtleties of French cuisine. He returned to Lille work at The Huitriere – a Michelin rated restaurant. Next, bitten by wanderlust, Laurent decided to seek out new horizons. He travelled to Belgium where he had the opportunity to learn new culinary skills from the renowned chef, Pierre Yves Gosse at the Relais Chateau de la Cense du Bois. Still keen to refi ne his skills and discover new gastronomic styles, he travelled to Italy, Spain and Morocco. There he decided to call a halt, and took a challenging position as executive chef in one of the most fashionable restaurants in Casablanca – The Trica. He stayed there for fi ve years.

Laurent has also had extensive experience in banqueting in France, and is very knowledgeable about charcuterie and butchery. In Italy he learned how to prepare fresh pasta and pizzas.

He loves to combine the traditional techniques of his French background with the Mediterranean infl uences he acquired on his travels.

Now he’s the Executive Chef of all the kitchens of the Wine Connection Deli and Bistro group, where he’s created an original and tasty Mediterranean menu, which includes pizzas and pasta. The emphasis is on top quality ingredients and value for money – all served in a delightful bistro ambience.

He feels very privileged to be able to use the resources of Wine Connection to access fresh imported cheese, cold cuts and Australian chilled meats. All those products are imported direct from the producers. This allows Laurent the opportunity to create new special menus on a monthly basis.

'Location, location, location' as the saying goes. It doesn’t matter how good you are, if you’re not in the right location, forget it.

Baan Rim Pa has become one of Thailand’s best-known restaurants, with a reputation stretching much further. It is perched on a cliff , with teak fl oors and the constant swish of the surf ‘downstairs’. There are some restaurants that just encapsulate the word ‘romantic’ and here, with Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the delicate aromas of world-class cooking in the air, this House by the Sea is one of the most romantic places to eat in Phuket.

Situated on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Andaman Sea, Baan Rim Pa prides itself in superb, authentic Royal Thai Cuisine, an ambience second to none and the most spectacular views on the island. Baan Rim Pa is the winner of the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence seven years in succession.

Take a journey into the home of real Thai food! Patong Seafood Restaurant was the fi rst seafood restaurant to open in the then village-like Patong. It has changed very little from those days except for a major refurbishment after the 2004 tsunami in which major damage was sustained.

The restaurant was rebuilt as it was in original Thai style with open dining area and a high circular design ceiling. Only the freshest seafood is brought straight from the boat and market to give you the fi nest selections, which are on display – chilled and ready to eat. The kitchens at Patong Seafood Restaurant are a place to behold, where their chefs with simply so many years of experience, prepare your seafood and other Thai delicacies to perfection.

The fi rst thing that you will notice are the friendly staff . The smiles, the attentiveness and the helpfulness in making your choice are something you will appreciate and you will then know why many visitors and locals come back time and time again to enjoy this real taste of Thailand.

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specifi c herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association.

Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices.

“I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls.

Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market.

What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation off ering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

Lemongrass HouseTo visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles.

“People are sensitive to diff erent scents at diff erent times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils.

Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.”

Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

The Royal Spa and Health Club

In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fi ll the air, the being is enticed into a fl owing stillness of body and mind.

The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club off ers a distinctly personal experience.

Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound eff ect, stilling the mind and easing the body.

Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff , and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure.

All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly off ers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts.

Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we off er 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

Finding a spa in Patong is easy. But if you want fi rst-class tropical treatments in a superb beachfront setting, your choice is very limited. Fortunately, the newly-opened Swasana Spa at Impiana Phuket Cabana Resort & Spa, provides the perfect answer. With two luxurious treatment rooms for couples, complete with private steam room and oversize twin Jacuzzi, one single treatment rooms and two beachfront Thai Massage rooms, Swasana Spa is unique in Patong – blending sublime treatments with a spectacular beachside location.

Whether you’re suff ering the stress of working in Phuket’s super-heated commercial environment, or you’re visiting from overseas for a slice of tropical relaxation, Swasana Spa’s warm welcome from their gracious staff is a great way to start.

My journey began with a Herbal Steam treatment in the aromatic steam room. Great for cleaning the pores and clearing the mind. Then out of the steam into the warm Jacuzzi for two, sipping a cool ginger tea while nature’s healing power eases away aches and stress.

Already beginning to relax, I moved on to the Swasana Salt Scrub, the spa’s signature body treatment. My 2 therapists started with a gentle scrub, using tropical salt and tamarind to remove the dead skin cells, leaving my skin feeling smooth and silky.

Gearing up the sense of total relaxation, and gearing down even further my stress levels, I next experienced the signature massage – a combination of Lomi-Lomi and Aromatherapy techniques and principles. Lomi Lomi, also called ‘Loving Hands’, derives from ancient Polynesian massage using long continuous, fl owing strokes to get deeply into tired muscles. Aromatherapy, using essential oils to stimulate or relax, is the perfect complement. While my therapists’ hands

worked their magic on my body, I felt I had left all my worldly cares and tension behind.

By now in sensory heaven, the Sawasana angels prepared me for a Rejuvenating Anti-Stress Facial. A blend of facial massage with natural creams, this treatment cleansed and rejuvenated my skin and facial muscles. With all my senses heightened, I detected the fragrance of guava fruit – good enough to eat, but alas just one of the natural ingredients in the creams my therapist was using. This one is a must for anyone thinking of having a ‘face lift’!

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My fi rst feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of the Sukko spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, infl uenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was fi lled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to fl oat away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on.

A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certifi ed Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is off ered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specifi c purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be.

I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but fi rmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat!

Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fi tness opportunities,

including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Muay Thai Chaiya’, a traditional and eff ective art of self-defense. Parents who come to Sukko to relax can leave their kids at Suk Zon Kid's Club, where they will enjoy with a variety of fun yet safe activities.

Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas, is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon Beach and 20 minutes from Patong Beach. It is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai style, set amongst 15 rai (6 acres) of luxuriously landscaped tropical forest.

How do you divide your time between work and family? Personally, I like to enjoy the best of everything. I love to work. I couldn’t live without working. I’m busy almost all the time; what with my job in the hotel, the businesses and charity work. Sundays are devoted to my family. I do enjoy taking them to eat out in fi ne restaurants. I spend any leisure time, gardening or cooking.

How is you lifestyle? I think it’s pretty simple and easy-going.

When do you plan to retire? When I’m 70 years old.

Do you exercise at all? Of course. I’m a doctor; I know the importance of fi tness.

How would you rate the quality of your life? Fair.

What’s your most satisfying achievement to date? I think being chosen as President of the Patong Hotels Association. It gives me the chance to work with others to steer development within an ethical and responsible paradigm. There’s no doubt that much of Phuket’s success and wealth has been built on the back of the hotel industry, but it has to take its share of the blame, for contributing to the environmental damage and associated social issues.

Please tell us briefl y about your background. I’m originally from Yala – the most southern province of Thailand, where I graduated from medical school. My specialty was orthopedic surgery.

What brought you to Phuket? I came here in 1984 after my graduation. I discovered a beautiful island, and as a bonus my brother was already living here.

How does a doctor come to be in the hotel business? Well, the hotel was owned by my brother and he persuaded me to become a part of it. Taking care of clients is a bit like looking after patients, you know.

What is your role in the business? I’m the General Manager.

How many years have you been involved in the hotel industry? 17 years now.

What is the best part of being an international general manager? You make many international friends, and you get to travel as part of the job.

How do you handle stress? You have to have a positive mental attitude. I fi nd I can relax by talking with friends I can trust.

What is your motto for running the job? Never, ever give up. Whilst there’s life, there’s hope.

Describe your style of leadership. It's all about compromise, generosity and encouragement.

I believe you have other roles in life. Yes, I’m an associate judge for the Juvenile and Family Court of Phuket, and President of the Patong Hotels Association. I also run my own businesses – a clinic and a restaurant.

How do you do these jobs simultaneously? It’s all a matter of time management and planning, and putting the right man (or woman, of course) in the right job. Personally, whatever role I’m playing I aim for excellence, above all.

Do you think you’re successful in your line of work? Medium to fair.

Who is the person who has most infl uenced you? My mother. She always pushed me to be a good boy, to do a good job and work hard.

Where do you stay? I live in Makham Bay. It’s such a great location with a beautiful ambience. It’s clean and safe; the neighbours are great and they share my lifestyle. Best of all, it has a good environment which is not too far from the sea, and we have mangrove forests all away from the tourist scene.

How is Phuket from your point of view? The island is an exhilarating place to be, but I’m afraid that the environment is suff ering from too much development, which is badly planned and executed. If we destroy the natural beauty of Phuket, it will be a loss not only for the residents, but for the nation and the whole world.

How old are you? Now, I’m 51 years old.

Could you tell us about your family? Yes, I’m married with two daughters and two sons aged 18, 16, 14 and 12 years, respectively. The eldest is studying medicine at Prince Songkha University.

The long-haul, low-cost carrier concept is now fi rmly established, and it’s only a matter of time before such an operation sets up shop in Phuket, bringing with it the associated job and tourism benefi ts.

So far, the only long-haul LCC route out of the region is operated by Air Asia, fl ying from Kuala Lumpur to London. However Jetstar, the rapidly growing LCC off shoot of Qantas, announced in May that it will soon start long-haul fl ights out of Singapore to Australian, North Asian and European destinations. They already fl y direct to Phuket from Australia. This all clearly emphasises the increasing regional impact of the business dynamic.

As a premier tourist destination, Phuket will eventually appear on the long-haul LCC radar of in-bound European carriers. Phuket only has to wait for Air Asia to establish its second hub here, before this happens. At present, they haven’t indicated when they’ll start such services, but they’re on the drawing board.

Although Air Asia’s performance to date has been impressive, the history of long-haul LCCs in Asia is not good. Oasis Airlines, operating out of Hong Kong, went into liquidation after only two years; they were partly a victim of high oil prices, but their main mistake was to off er excellent service on full-size intercontinental aircraft, with severely discounted fares. For the long-haul low-cost model to be profi table, operators must cram as many people as possible into small aircraft like the Boeing 737 and the Airbus 320.

However, stretched versions of these planes are now increasingly being used over longer distances. In Europe in 1985, the average fl ight distance for an LCC was around 400 kilometres. By 2007 it was closer to 1000 kilometres. In the U.S. where Southwest Airlines pioneered the low-cost model in the 1970s, the average fl ight distance went from 600 kilometres to around 1200 kilometres, over the same period.

If you opt for a budget fl ight, what are you likely to have to forego? Here’s a selection: hot towel, alcoholic beverages, tea and coff ee, a cooked meal, meal

Cut The FrillsIn the 1970s, the insatiable U.S. domestic demand for cheap air travel came up against rising costs, and budget airlines were born. Now they’re morphing into long-haul hybrids that are changing the way we all fl y. It’s coming to an airport near you.

trays, cutlery and napkin, free newspaper, generous (a relative term) leg room, pre-fl ight lounge facilities and a frequent fl yer programme.

However, the lines between LCCs and full service models are becoming blurred. For example, some ‘legacy’ (i.e. traditional) carriers are now curtailing in-fl ight services. They’ve reduced their seat pitch (the space between rows of seats), introduced baggage services charges, eliminated free food, and reduced the number of aircraft types in their fl eets to facilitate maintenance. Conversely, some LCCs are off ering frequent fl yer schemes and enhancing their cabin service off erings.

The Malaysian LCC Firefl y and Thai Air Asia, both off er the following services that were not part of the original business model: self check-in, pre-booked meals, supersized luggage, advance seat selection, 20kg checked baggage allowance, complimentary in-fl ight refreshments and light snacks. Most other LCCs, however, still charge for food served on board.

Initially LCCs did not off er in-fl ight entertainment (IFE), because of the cost (and weight of the equipment) and because it was not deemed necessary for short-haul fl ights, but as the sector lengths fl own increased, this is changing.

The longer-haul routes have also forced carriers to introduce other services and facilities not previously planned for LCCs, such as ovens to heat food; a seat pitch which is bigger than the standard 29-31 inches and on-board GSM and internet connectivity services. The last-named are normally obtainable on a chargeable basis. OnAir was a pioneer in off ering such services, but they’re becoming increasingly common as instant connectability seems to be an indispensible part of our lives.

So it seems that the LCC concept is set to become a standard business format for aviation services; particularly those targetting the tourist market. Let’s look at the numbers. In 2006, in Europe and the United States combined, there were around 7000 fl ights a week. Today this statistic has risen to 58,000 per week.

The inexorable growth of the LCC and its increasing impact on long-haul routes will inevitably become a part of Phuket Airport’s future operations. It’s just a matter of waiting for the economics to become optimal. LCCs fi rst really took off (do pardon the pun) as a business model in Europe, with Ireland’s Ryanair and UK’s EasyJet. The doomsayers predicted it would never work in Asia because of the distances involved, the lack of secondary airports and the limited profi tability of the regional fare structure. They were wrong.

anyone who has had a heart attack or stroke, or who suff ers from unstable angina or transient ischemic attacks (mini-strokes).

If you’re going on a long fl ight in economy class and you believe that you may be immobile for most of the trip, some experts recommend taking a low dose of aspirin (approximately 100 milligrams) for two or three days before fl ying. This is provided that you don’t have any stomach problems or other conditions that

They say that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Well, it now seems that the humble aspirin may be just as benefi cial as the proverbial apple.

Aspirin, or acetylsalicylic acid to give it its scientifi c name, has been available for over 100 years, and is widely used to treat pain, infl ammation and fever. However, new research indicates that this drug may have many other valuable properties.

It’s believed that aspirin reduces the body’s production of prostaglandins. Too many prostaglandins can cause platelets in the blood to stick together. This can result in the formation of blood clots that block blood vessels, which may then trigger heart attacks or strokes. Blood clots can also cause Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), commonly known as Economy-class Syndrome.

However, aspirin is not for everyone, and you should always consult your doctor before taking it as a prophylactic. If you are using the medication regularly, remember to advise your dentist or doctor of this, before surgery or a dental procedure. They can then be prepared for any potential complications.

Taking a daily dose of aspirin is highly recommended by the American Heart Association and other leading authorities, for

would contra-indicate its use. Researchers claim that that this can reduce your chance of developing DVT, by one third.

The research also supports taking an aspirin as soon as possible after experiencing chest pain, which may be an indication of an acute heart attack. Of course, this shouldn’t be a reason to delay calling an ambulance, or otherwise getting to hospital as soon as possible. Paramedics and ambulance staff will now routinely give patients an aspirin if they believe a heart attack has occurred. Many attacks are caused by a blood clot in the arteries that supply oxygen to the heart muscle, so taking an aspirin can thin the blood and assist in dissolving the clot thereby reducing the damage that would otherwise result. The earlier this is done the better, and indeed it may mean the diff erence between life and death.

Taking aspirin isn't advised during or after an acute or sudden stroke prior to diagnosis, because not all strokes are caused by blood clots. Whilst this is generally the case, some attacks may result from ruptured blood vessels. Taking aspirin could potentially make this type of stroke more severe. If you have had a stroke which your doctor confi rms was caused by a blood clot, he will almost certainly recommend that you take a daily dose of aspirin to reduce the likelihood of a recurrence.

For some people, the medication may have unwanted side-aff ects. The potential benefi cial eff ects of reducing clots by thinning the blood may cause excessive bleeding, as it reduces the blood’s natural ability to coagulate. Aspirin may also irritate the stomach and cause stomach bleeding. Some may suff er from heartburn, nausea and vomiting, and even stomach and intestinal ulcers. Chronic alcohol abusers who take the drug may be at increased risk

of developing stomach bleeding, and suff ering liver damage. Some complain that aspirin causes a ringing in the ears, whilst others have experienced allergic reactions or developed asthma.

To reduce the likelihood of stomach complaints and bleeding, a special enteric-coated aspirin is available which reduces stomach infl ammation. If you’re taking an aspirin regularly, then you should use this type.

In summary, aspirin can be a lifesaver. If you’re in a risk group, or you’ve already had a heart attack or stroke, I’d recommend consulting with your doctor about taking one enteric-coated aspirin a day.
