marks the 125th anniversary of the

death of Vincent van Gogh, one

of the country’s most celebrated

artists. Amsterdam’s Van Gogh

Museum will be holding two high-

profle exhibitions in his honour to

commemorate the date.

The frst celebrates the

artist’s letter-writing – van Gogh

was a prolifc correspondent,

particularly with his brother Theo.

The When I Give, I Give Myself

exhibition invites modern artists

to respond to his letters with a

letter, poem or artwork. The

collection, which includes pieces

by Anish Kapoor, Wouter Venema

and Christian Jankowski, is on

display until 17 January 2016.

Autumn sees the opening of

the Munch: Van Gogh exhibition.

On display from 25 September, the

collection explores the similarities

between the two contemporaries’

works. In addition, the museum

will unveil its new entrance

building this September – a suitably

impressive new space for these two

standout shows.

Amsterdam’s cultural

attractions continue at the

Rijksmuseum. The museum has

undergone extensive restoration

work over the past 10 years,

preserving PJH Cuypers’ original

architecture and launching a new

area, the Philips Wing, in 2014.

Collection highlights include

Rembrandt’s The Night Watch

and works by the Dutch masters of

the Golden Age, such as Vermeer

and Frans Hals.

This autumn, don’t miss

the museum’s Dick Bruna

exhibition, which runs until 15

November 2015, which explains

how Mify, his internationally

renowned cartoon rabbit, came

to be. The Asia in Amsterdam

show is another fascinating

attraction, showcasing 170

objects from India, China and

Japan that were shipped to

Holland during the Golden Age

of the 17th century.

After marvelling at the artistic

achievements of the Netherlands’

fnest creative talents, it’s time to

Taking inspiration from ancient Eastern traditions, Rituals Cosmetics is dedicated to celebrating the little things in life. Verity Hogan meets the company’s CEO Raymond Cloosterman

‘Rituals was a hobby that

got out of control’: Raymond

Cloosterman’s rather modest

assessment of the luxury lifestyle

company he created in 2000 is

something of an understatement.

In the 15 years since its inception,

Rituals Cosmetics has developed

an impressive product range, with

everything from body and facial

products to scented candles and

perfumes, and even a washing-up

liquid. The company now has

more than 400 standalone stores

around the world, is stocked in

over 1,200 luxury department

stores and perfumeries, and is the

toiletry brand of choice for more

than 900 hotels and many airlines.

The company’s products

take inspiration from Eastern

traditions, and are designed to

help people rediscover the magic

of the everyday. ‘We’re living life

on autopilot and we’ve forgotten

what it is to enjoy the little things,’

Cloosterman explains. ‘There’s a

strong need, on a global basis, for

people to bring back these small

moments of happiness during the

day and to make them take a step

back for a minute.’

Page 50: SHOP Holland AW15

50 | F E AT U R E S

Before launching Rituals

Cosmetics, Cloosterman spent

13 years climbing the corporate

ladder at Unilever, where he

occupied a series of high-profle

positions. It was while he was

looking for new business insights

that the idea for Rituals Cosmetics

struck: ‘As a result of this three-

month journey I came back

completely hyper with many new

ideas – I was so enthusiastic that

I decided to resign and start my

own cosmetics brand. Some of

the insights from that journey still

impact on the brand today.’

Every product in Rituals

Cosmetics’ extensive range has a

story to tell. Cloosterman and his

team travel extensively to discover

ancient rituals from Eastern

cultures, which then inspire

their perfumers and developers

to create product lines that are

relevant to modern life. Take the

Tao line, for example, which is

based on the Chinese idea of yin

and yang and is designed to bring

tranquillity to hectic modern lives.

‘We’re so connected these days,

we’re working 24/7, we’re available

24/7, that people are looking for

ways to escape from that,’ says

Cloosterman of the collection.

‘Silence is the new luxury.’

At the moment, Cloosterman’s

favourite line is the masculine

Samurai. It’s inspired by the

pre-battle rituals of the Japanese

emperors’ elite soldiers, who were

expected to look immaculate

before any fght. ‘There are a

few very innovative products in

there that I love,’ Cloosterman

Page 51: SHOP Holland AW15
Page 52: SHOP Holland AW15

52 | FEATURES

Above (from top): the Rituals store in Zwolle; the brand’s Samurai Magic Shave cream

and the growing trend towards

mindfulness and wellbeing.

‘There’s an increasing need to

create a safe place for yourself,

to escape from the pressures to

perform as a mother, a manager,

a friend,’ Cloosterman agrees.

He fnds an escape in travel – ‘I

love to travel, I love to explore,

I’m curious’ – and recent trips

have seen him fnd inspiration in

Thailand, get away from it all on a

family trip to the Idaho wilderness

and speed through the streets of

Paris on the back of a motor taxi.

Even so, Cloosterman’s passion

for work always brings him back

and he fnds the creative side of

his role especially thrilling. ‘It’s an

amazing process, very rewarding,’

he explains. ‘It starts with a cup of

tea at the kitchen table and a year

or so later there’s a beautiful range

of products.’

Cloosterman admits that

the company spent some

years nurturing the brand and

improving its products and

concept before it found its niche,

but in the past seven years it has

enthuses. One such is a three-

in-one shaving cream that is

unusually rich, hydrating and

soothing: ‘It’s my shaving secret!’

Rituals Cosmetics has wide

appeal, attracting old and

young, men and women alike.

‘I wanted to create a brand that

had nothing to do with the old-

fashioned way of segmentation,

of trying to put people in a box,’

Cloosterman explains. ‘It’s more

about trying to speak to people

with a certain mindset – they’re

very critical in terms of quality

but they treasure life and like to

enjoy the little things.’

It’s a philosophy that fts

well with modern lifestyles PH

and expanding every day; on

average the company opens one

or two stores a week in locations

around the world. ‘We’re growing

by word of mouth, friends telling

friends – that’s how we became

successful across Europe,’ he

notes. ‘When people discover us,

we try to surprise them in terms of

quality of design and fragrance so

that they become addicted!’

The company, often described

as a young brand with an old

soul, looks set to continue to

grow and thrive. ‘There are a lot

of paradoxes in the concept that

makes people fall in love with the

brand,’ Cloosterman concedes.

‘The paradox of old stories and

new technologies, of East and

West, of the very exclusive and

yet accessible – all of these things

come together.’

stews or stamppot of potatoes,

vegetables and meat, or warming

soups including Erwtensoep, a very

thick pea soup, are traditional

home-cooked staples.

However, the country’s

restaurants are also no stranger

to international infuences and

the best of the bunch deftly

incorporate the region’s supply

of fantastic natural produce with

exotic and exciting global favours.

Traditional Dutch food is often

characterised for its simplicity.

The country is known for mild,

nutty cheeses such as Gouda and

Edam, as well as its pofertjes, a

smaller, fufer and arguably more

delicious version of a pancake

made with buckwheat four. Then

there’s the stroopwafel, a typical

Dutch snack, a moreish cross

between a wafe and a biscuit

that’s flled with caramel. Simple

1. Ice skating

The locals have long enjoyed skating

along the city’s frozen canals in win-

tertime. If the temperatures don’t drop

enough for that, visit the picturesque

skating rink next to the Rijksmuseum.

Ice Amsterdam, Museumplein, 1071 LN Amsterdam, iceamsterdam.nl

* for map go to page 82

2. Gallery hopping

If you’re in the mood for visiting galleries,

the Jordaan district is the place to go.

The neighbourhood is a hive of artistic

activity, with galleries such as Eduard

Planting, Galerie Fons Welters, Torch

and Stigter van Doesburg offering plenty

of creative food for thought.

3. Café spotting

Amsterdam is not short of wonderfully

old-fashioned and atmospheric cafés,

which are the perfect place to hide out

on a grey winter’s day. Café Americain

has been open since 1902 and is worth

visiting for its art nouveau interior alone.

Take your pick from the reading table,

stacked with magazines and newspa-

pers, and settle in.

THRIFT SHOP

Thrift Shop combines a concept

store, second-hand store and

vintage market in one. The

premise is that designers and

brands can rent a ‘cabinet’ in

the store for a week and Thrift

Shop will sell their products on

their behalf. As a result, there

are always up-and-coming

brands to be discovered, making

every visit even more interesting

for its customers. In addition,

designers are encouraged

to donate any unsold pieces

of clothing to the local food

bank, thereby supporting

less fortunate members of

the community.

PC Hoofstraat.

When I Give, I Give Myself

Philips Wing.

PC Hoofstraat.

Dry Goods

Master Grande Tourbillon Cylindrique

Duomètre à

Quantième Lunaire.

в Schaap en Citroen.

Page 93: SHOP Holland AW15

93

Dior.

Concertgebouw.

48: Simple Pleasures

Rituals Cosmetics

Rituals

Page 94: SHOP Holland AW15

94

Rituals Cosmetics

Rituals Cosmetics

Rituals

Cosmetics

Page 95: SHOP Holland AW15

95

Rituals

Cosmetics

Rituals Cosmetics

Tao

Rituals Cosmetics

Rituals

Cosmetics,

Raymond Cloosterman

Rituals

Cosmetics

Cloosterman

七年中品牌的国际影响力与日俱增;

Cloosterman

Dengan beraneka ragam atraksi

budaya, ditambah dengan

bulevar keren yang dijejeri

oleh para perancang mewah,

Museumsquartier di Amsterdam

merupakan salah satu distrik yang

wajib dikunjungi, seperti yang

dijelaskan Madeleine Murray-Lyons

Museumsquartier di Amsterdam

sejak lama sudah menjadi daerah

penting budaya, yang menarik

perhatian para pengunjung dari

berbagai penjuru selama beberapa

dasawarsa. Seperti halnya

minuman anggur yang semakin

tua akan semakin mantap rasanya,

daerah ini pun makin lama makin

bagus. Rijksmuseum, aula konser

Concertgebouw keseruan ritel mewah

di PC Hooftstraat semuanya ada di

sana. Mungkin belum pernah ada

waktu yang sebaik saat ini untuk

menikmati bermacam-macam atraksi

yang ditawarkan area itu.

Tahun ini khususnya adalah saat

yang tepat untuk berkunjung, karena

2015 merupakan tahun peringatan

125 tahun meninggalnya Vincent

van Gogh, salah satu seniman paling

dipuji negara itu. Museum Van Gogh

di Amsterdam akan mengadakan

dua pameran besar sebagai

penghormatan terhadap van Gogh

untuk mengenang kematian itu.

Pameran pertama merayakan

surat-surat yang ditulis seniman ini

– van Gogh merupakan penulis surat

yang produktif, terutama dengan

adiknya Theo. Pameran yang

bertajuk When I Give, I Give Myself

ini mengundang para artis modern

untuk membalas surat-suratnya

dengan surat, puisi atau karya seni.

Koleksi yang ditampilkan meliputi

karya Anish Kapoor, Wouter

Venema dan Christian Jankowski,

dan dipamerkan sampai tanggal 17

Januari 2016.

Pada musim gugur, pameran

Munch: Van Gogh akan dibuka.

Pameran yang akan dimulai pada

25 September ini akan menyajikan

koleksi yang menjelajahi kemiripan

di antara karya kedua seniman

sejawat ini. Selain itu, museum ini

juga akan membuka ruang pintu

masuk baru ke gedung tersebut pada

bulan September – ruang baru yang

sama mengagumkannya untuk dua

pameran istimewa ini.

Atraksi budaya Amsterdam juga

berlanjut ke Rijksmuseum. Dalam

10 tahun terakhir, museum ini sudah

melewati kerja pemugaran besar,

dengan tetap menjaga arsitektur asli

karya PJH Cuypers dan membuka

area baru bernama Philips Wing,

di tahun 2014. Koleksi yang

ditampilkan di sana antara lain The

Night Watch karya Rembrandt dan

karya-karya seniman besar Belanda

dari Zaman Keemasan, seperti

Vermeer dan Frans Hals.

Musim gugur ini, jangan sampai

ketinggalan pameran Dick Bruna di

museum ini, yang akan berlangsung

sampai 15 November 2015, serta

menjelaskan cara Mify, kartun

kelincinya yang terkenal secara

international, muncul. Pameran

Asia di Amsterdam merupakan

atraksi lain yang memesona, dengan

menampilkan 170 benda dari

India, Tiongkok dan Jepang yang

dikirimkan ke Belanda pada Zaman

Keemasan di abad ke-17.

Setelah mengagumi prestasi

Belanda, tiba saatnya untuk

berinvestasi dalam seni barang

sandang di butik-butik yang

berjajar di PC Hooftstraat. Area

ini sudah dirombak perwajahannya

selama musim panas dan kini siap

menyambut para tamu baru.

Pertama-tama, kunjungilah

butik Blue Blood untuk memeriksa

perkembangan terbaru di dunia

denim perancang. Koleksi Dry

Goods yang inovatif dibuat

tanpa menggunakan air, yang

menghasilkan jins yang menua

dengan indah – dan tidak ada dua

yang sama karena masing-masing

pemilik denim menciptakan sendiri

pola pemakaian sendiri yang unik.

Kunjungan berikutnya ke Jaeger-

LeCoultre, tempat Anda dapat

menemukan pilihan penunjuk waktu

buatan Swiss yang luar biasa. Dua

dari desain baru paling menakjubkan

untuk tahun 2015 adalah Master

Grande Tourbillon Cylindrique

dengan emas putih dan Duomètre à

Quantième Lunaire.

Pecinta perhiasan pasti akan

menyukai berbagai macam perhiasan

yang ditawarkan di Schaap en

Citroen. Dari gelang bertatahkan

berlian karya Shamballa Jewels

sampai cincin pop warna-warni

dari Pomellato dan liontin emas

berbentuk hati dari Chopard, selalu

ada sesuatu yang cocok untuk

semua usia dan selera di toko ini.

Untuk cincin pertunangan yang

sempurna, Coster Diamonds wajib

dikunjungi. Perusahaan ini memiliki

salah satu pabrik berlian tertua yang

masih beroperasi di Eropa, yang

memulai bisnisnya sejak tahun 1840.

Kunjungan wisata berpemandu

disediakan dengan gratis. Anda

bisa melihat di sana para ahli emas

dan berlian beraksi saat mengasah

dengan tekun bebatuan yang

berasal dari seluruh dunia; berbagai

cara pemotongan dan pengaturan

tersedia.

Pakaian dari butik mewah Dior

akan menjadi pelengkap sempurna

bagi berlian yang baru Anda beli.

Koleksi musim gugur/dingin 2015/16

mereka menyertakan setelan merah

mengagumkan dengan celana tiga

perempat, serta berbagai macam

rok mini dengan pola ceria, setelan

terusan psikedelik dan mantel wol

berwarna-warni. Direktur kreatif

label ini, Raf Simons, dipuji banyak

orang karena membawa sentuhan

modern ke rumah mode Prancis

yang disegani itu dan koleksi terakhir

ini dengan sempurna mencerminkan

estetika barunya.

Kemudian, akhirilah hari

penjelajahan Anda di

Museumsquartier dengan makan

malam di restoran Taiko. Menu

luar biasa berinspirasi Asia ini

diciptakan oleh chef eksekutif Schilo

Van Coevorden yang menyertakan

berbagai macam sushi, dim sum

dan sashimi, di samping sapi wagyu

panggang yang lezat. Setelah makan

malam, waktunya menonton konser

di Concertgebouw. Para pemusik

paling berbakat tampil di sana

untuk memainkan musik-musik

klasik gubahan komponis-komponis

terbesar dunia. Karya-karya Mozart,

Bach dan Brahms merupakan

segelintir gubahan dari gubahan

yang dipertunjukkan di musim

gugur dan dingin ini.

‘Rituals tadinya merupakan hobi

yang kemudian lepas kendali’: kata

Raymond Cloosterman dengan

rendah hati mengenai perusahaan

gaya hidup mewahnya yang

didirikannya di tahun 2000. Dalam

15 tahun sejak didirikan, Rituals

Cosmetics telah mengembangkan

rentang produk yang mengagumkan,

mulai dari produk untuk tubuh

dan wajah sampai lilin wangi dan

parfum, dan bahkan sabun cair

untuk cuci piring. Perusahaan yang

kini memiliki lebih dari 400 toko

mandiri di seluruh dunia ini juga

memasok lebih dari 1.200 toko serba

ada dan toko parfum mewah, dan

menjadi merek perlengkapan mandi

yang dipilih oleh lebih dari 900 hotel

dan banyak maskapai penerbangan.

Produk-produk perusahaan ini

diilhami oleh tradisi Timur, serta

dirancang untuk membantu orang

menemukan kembali keajaiban

sehari-hari. ‘Kita menjalani

kehidupan yang berjalan otomatis

dan kita lupa seperti apa rasanya

menikmati hal-hal kecil dalam

kehidupan,’ kata Cloosterman

menjelaskan. ‘Secara global ada

kebutuhan kuat bagi orang-orang

untuk menghadirkan kembali

momen-momen kebahagiaan kecil

dalam hari mereka dan membuat

mereka sejenak menenangkan diri.’

Sebelum meluncurkan Rituals

Cosmetics, Cloosterman meniti

karir selama 13 tahun di Unilever.

Di sana ia menempati serangkaian

posisi tinggi. Ketika ia berusaha

mendapatkan wawasan bisnis

baru, muncullah gagasan tentang

Rituals Cosmetics: ‘Sebagai hasil

dari perjalanan tiga bulan ini, saya

yang begitu kaya, melembapkan kulit

dan menyejukkan: ‘Itulah rahasia

bercukur saya!’

Rituals Cosmetics memiliki

daya tarik yang luas, dengan

menarik perhatian mereka yang

tua, muda, lelaki dan perempuan.

‘Saya ingin menciptakan merek

yang tidak melakukan segmentasi

kuno, yang memasukkan orang

dalam kotak-kotak tertentu,’ kata

Cloosterman menjelaskan. ‘Kami

lebih berusaha berbicara kepada

orang-orang dengan cara berpikir

tertentu – orang-orang yang sangat

kritis mengenai kualitas, tetapi

menghargai kehidupan dan ingin

menikmati hal-hal kecil dalam

kehidupan.’

Ini merupakan flsafat yang

cocok dengan gaya hidup modern

dan makin besarnya kecenderungan

terhadap kepedulian dan

kesejahteraan diri. ‘Kebutuhan

untuk menciptakan tempat aman

bagi diri sendiri makin meningkat,

guna melarikan diri dari tekanan

untuk berperan sebagai ibu,

manajer, teman,’ kata Cloosterman.

Ia sendiri menemukan pelarian

seperti itu dalam bepergian – ‘Saya

senang melakukan perjalanan, saya

senang menjelajahi, saya selalu ingin

tahu’ – dan perjalanannya baru-

baru ini membuatnya menemukan

inspirasi di Thailand, melepaskan

diri dari semua itu dalam perjalanan

bersama keluarga ke alam liar Idaho

dan menelusuri jalan-jalan di Paris

dengan naik ojek.

Walaupun demikian, semangat

Cloosterman untuk bekerja selalu

membawanya pulang dan merasakan

bahwa sisi kreatif dari perannya

kembali dengan semangat luar

biasa dan begitu banyak ide baru

– saya begitu antusias sehingga

memutuskan untuk mengundurkan

diri dari pekerjaan dan memulai

merek kosmetik sendiri. Sejumlah

wawasan dari perjalanan itu masih

berdampak pada merek ini dewasa

ini.’

Semua produk di rentang

luas Rituals Cosmetics memiliki

kisahnya sendiri. Cloosterman

dan timnya melakukan perjalanan

secara ekstensif untuk menemukan

ritual kuno dari budaya Timur,

yang kemudian mengilhami

pembuat parfum dan pengembang

produk mereka untuk menciptakan

lini produk yang relevan dengan

kehidupan modern. Produk dari lini

Tao misalnya, yang berdasarkan

ide yin dan yang Tiongkok dan

dirancang untuk menghadirkan

ketenangan dalam kehidupan

modern yang sibuk. ‘Kita begitu

terkoneksi sekarang ini, kita bekerja

24 jam/7 hari, kita tersedia 24/7,

dan orang-orang mencari jalan

untuk melarikan diri dari hal itu,’

kata Cloosterman mengenai koleksi

ini. ‘Kesenyapan merupakan

kemewahan baru.’

Saat ini, lini favorit Cloosterman

adalah Samurai yang maskulin.

Lini produk ini diilhami oleh

ritual sebelum pertempuran yang

dilakukan para serdadu elite

kaisar Jepang, yang diharapkan

untuk tampil sempurna sebelum

pertempuran. ‘Ada beberapa

produk inovatif di lini ini yang saya

sukai,’ kata Cloosterman dengan

bersemangat. Salah satunya adalah

krim pencukur tiga sewadah (3-in-1)

Saat ingin memborong dunia,

senang. ‘Ini merupakan proses

yang menakjubkan, benar-benar

memberikan kepuasan,’ katanya

menerangkan. ‘Dimulai dari

secangkir teh di meja di dapur

dan setahun atau beberapa waktu

kemudian ada rentang produk yang

indah.’

Cloosterman mengakui

bahwa perusahaannya

memerlukan beberapa tahun

untuk menumbuhkan mereknya

dan memperbaiki produk serta

konsep sebelum menemukan

ceruk bisnisnya, tetapi di tujuh

tahun terakhir ini mereknya mulai

memiliki daya tarik internasional

dan berkembang setiap hari;

secara rata-rata perusahaan ini

membuka satu atau dua toko dalam

seminggu di lokasi-lokasi di seluruh

dunia. ‘Kami tumbuh dari mulut

ke mulut, teman yang bercerita

kepada temannya – itulah caranya

kami sukses di seluruh Eropa,’

katanya. ‘Ketika orang menemukan

kami, kami mencoba mengejutkan

mereka dari segi kualitas desain

dan wewangian, sehingga mereka

menjadi ketagihan!’

Perusahaan yang sering

digambarkan sebagai merek muda

dengan jiwa tua ini, kelihatannya

akan terus berkembang dan tumbuh.

‘Ada banyak paradoks dalam konsep

kami yang membuat orang-orang

jatuh cinta pada merek ini,’ kata

Cloosterman menyimpulkan.

‘Paradoks cerita lama dan teknologi

baru, Timur dan Barat, sangat

eksklusif tetapi juga mudah diakses –

semua hal ini menjadi satu.’
