KWILLS X ADDICTWe took new Addict artist Kwills to the Hawksmoor to chat sneakers, camo and sketching.

Addict x Kwills

Tell us a little more about yourself? How did this journey begin for you?Well, my name is Quincy also known as Q or Kwills. Living in the Netherlands, married with a few cats. This journey began when I got back from London after I delivered my original sketch of the Foot Patrol graphic. Two days later I got an e-mail from Addict to see if I was interested in doing a collaboration. Obviously I was happy to accept. When did you decide you wanted to be an artist?Good question. I’ve been drawing since I was five years old and I’ve always been interested in comics and cartoons. I think at the age of 12 I knew I wanted to do more with drawing after getting into skateboarding and getting inspired by the skateboard-art. My goal was then to either have my own clothing line or open a skate shop. To this day I’ve always been fascinated by its graphics and illustrations. What is it about your individual style that appeals to so many people and brands?I used to have a very clean style, but it lacked something. I visited an illustration agency and showed them my portfolio. They were mildly interested. The manager asked if I had anything more to show them, so I showed them my sketchbooks. He immediately became more interested and gave me some great advice. He told me my sketches had more character and showed more of the real me. I think my style has become more recognizable and my subjects speak to people, like the drawing challenge with drawings of Star Wars or Back to the Future. How long has it taken you to develop your style? My style has evolved over the years, but the advice from the agency helped me evolve even more. It gave me a sense of direction on where to take my style.

What inspires you?Everything. If you look at my drawing challenge you can see inspiration from movies, cartoons, shoes and things I find on the web. You recently worked on a great project with Foot Patrol. Can you tell us more about that? How pleased were you with the final piece?I met Jimmy (from FP) two years ago at the Puma launch event and we connected. We stayed in touch and he commented on a piece from the drawing challenge. I e-mailed him to ask if they were interested in doing collaborations with artists. I guess the time was right, since they were about to launch their new website and they needed an intro graphic. He saw the street graphic I did of Civilist and the idea was born to do a graphic of the entire street. It took me 5 days to finish the drawing and I was really happy with how it turned out. You’re very well known amongst the sneaker community…why is that? When did you start collecting?I’ve always worn sneakers, but I got into collecting sneakers in ’99 after visiting the Australian SneakerFreaker forum, which opened the world of sneaker collecting for me. Sneaker Aficionados at that time would pay attention to perfectly lacing their shoes and keeping them clean. They had a topic to show what you wore that day and I was happy to participate. It was all about enjoying the shoes you have. What are your current op 3 sneakersThat’s the hardest question to answer!1. Nike Air Huarache Burst AD212. Adidas EQT Guidance 93 Highs and Lows

3. Footpatrol x Reebok Classic Leather Mid “On the rocks” You’re also very well known for your ‘Daily Draw Challenge’. Why did you start that? After my mom passed away in September 2012 I had a lot of stuff to deal with. I didn’t have a lot of inspiration to draw or I just didn’t feel like it. My wife noticed I didn’t draw that much anymore so I decided to challenge myself and do at least one drawing a day for one year. Just to cope with my emotions and frustrations. It helped me develop my skill and give me a chance to draw different subjects and try different techniques.I’m really grateful I did, because it gave me the opportunity to do different collaborations and visit new places. Do you have plans to continue with it?A lot of people asked me the same question. Yes, I will continue the challenge. It seems silly to just stop drawing after this year. Perhaps the format will change a bit, but I will still draw every damn day.

How does it feel to be part of the Addict family?I’ve known Addict for a long time and own quite a few items designed by C-LAW, SheONE and Mr Jago. I was always impressed by their work and to be a part of this group of artists (who I admire) is a humbling experience. How did you set about creating your Addict X Kwills camo? Where did you begin?I’ve looked at the DPM book by Hardy Blechman to get the creative juices flowing and I’ve been e-mailing Addict. There was a lot of back and forth talks and they were kind enough to provide me with a CD with additional camo patterns. Three or four of the patterns spoke to me and based on those designs I decided to take the two most interesting ones and draw them. I’ve added a few personal touches, See if you can find them.

Has this been your first attempt at working on a camo? Did you enjoy the process? If so why?I did camo patterns before, but this is the first one I’ve actually drawn it. I enjoyed the process. It was interesting to see how a camo pattern is compiled. The challenge was to design a pattern that is repeatable and seamlessly connects on all sides. I have to say that was the hardest part. Is there a stand out piece from your collection? If so why?I’m really looking forward to the chambray shirt because it’s a pretty basic shirt with a camo that creates a new look. You can either wear it as a casual piece or dress it up a bit. What have you got planned for the future? What can we expect from you?Lots! I really can’t talk about it right now, you’ll just have to wait and see. How can people find your work? Twitter? Website? My website is www.kwills.com. And I’m active on instagram: @kwillsofficial. I’m also on Facebook, look for Kwills. I would like to give special thanks to my wife who typed out this interview during our drive back home from a day spent with family. Also a big thank you to my dad and my brother and to all my good friends.

Thank you for this opportunity.

Nike Air Huarache Burst AD212. Adidas EQT Guidance 93 Highs and Lows3.

Twitter?

ILOVEDUST X ADDICTWe catch up with the talented ilovedust team

at their South Coast studio to talk work, play and video games.

Words: Jay Hamdaoui

102

Addict x Ilovedust

Can you give us an overview on ‘I Love Dust’? Where and how did it all begin? We are ilovedust, a multi-disciplinary studio founded back in 2003 by two friends, Mark Graham and Ben Beach. Based on the South coast of England, surrounded by the rolling English countryside and whipped by sea air, we create fresh, innovative design, which makes up our award-winning portfolio. Collaborating with a diverse range of brands, from these shores and afar, we’ve been delivering world-class illustration and graphic design for 11 crazy years. We love what we do, and we think our clients do too. We are an international team of 20 illustrators, designers, art directors and project managers. We all bring something to the melting pot for every job, which helps define the great range of work we produce. In 2003, Mark went out on a limb, remortgaged his house and set up Ilovedust with Ben Beach, a designer he had met whilst working at clothing company. They were convinced that they could bring something to the table that was refreshing and fucking cool.

Where did the name come from? When Mark & Ben first set up they were based out of a basement. The levels of dust gave influence to the name although Mark will tell you it came from a Columbian drug cartel he had investments in.

How many people do you have in your team and what is it made up of (artists, illustrators etc)We have a team of 20 here in the Southsea studio, illustrators and designers make up roughly about 75% of the team. The rest are our creative directors, project managers and the two dogs, Bosko and Walt.

What is it you guys do?To be honest there isn’t much we can’t do. Our bread and butter would be illustration, design and branding, but consumer experience and mural projects make up the rest of what we can offer.

How does your creative process start? Where do you draw inspiration from? When we founded the studio we were a small team but I guess the one common thread you could throw over our collective influences was most probably skateboard culture. The art, the music, the fashion, obviously that blanket has changed and evolved over the years but in essence that’s most probably what best captures the majority of our influences and inspirations.Nowadays we draw inspiration from so many sources. We have a great team of individuals from across the globe all working side by side on each project. Everyone brings something different to each project.

You’ve got an impressive client list, which projects stand out in your memory?I think most certainly the world cup campaign work we did for NIKE this year has been the most satisfying project we’ve worked on. Working alongside such a great team of talented people and being able to collaborate on something many of us could only dream of was the best thing ever.

What kind of projects do you look forward to working on the most? Anything where we can really push the envelope. So often in our line of work, the designer finds themselves restricted creatively by the client. We always try to push things as far as we can, so when we have a project with little to no reins attached we can really express ourselves creatively. Those are probably the ones we enjoy the most.

You recently opened an animation studio in London. Can you tell us more about it?Goldenwolf was founded as our sister studio in 2013. Based in Shoreditch, they are an animation studio

producing work for Cartoon Network, Warner Bros and MTV to name drop a few clients.

Is there anything you guys can’t do?If there is, we haven’t found it yet.

What’s the secret to your success?By keeping young blood pumping through the veins of the company. Mark will always quote Tom Cruise in Collateral, ‘make the best of it, improvise, adapt to the environment, darwin, shit happens, I ching, whatever man we gotta roll with it’.We always treat each job as if its the last thing we’ll be known for. It’s always paid off for us so far.

Do you have any tips or advise for any young creatives out there looking to get involved with ILD. What is it you look for?Work harder than some; sleep less than most.

When did you first come across Addict? What was it that stood out for you? Some of us in here remember the first store, I think it was in Bedford place, Southampton.I think I can remember Chris Pulman skating at the park in southsea, and I think at the time he was being given Addict Jackets on flow, so we all kinda took notice. He was Boss in Southsea. For me personally, the artist colabs always stick in the memory, back when I was at college I remember picking up some of the Will Barras, and Mr Jago tees. At school, I had my head stuck in the Scrawl book through my exams so when I saw these drop I instantly took notice. A little later on I remember the She One camo pieces, i think they even did tent with that camo at one point, that was a touch. The touches on the jackets with the gloss swipes within the camo were smart. I remember thinking they were really different to anything else out there at the time.

Talk to us about the Addict X ILD pattern. Where did the idea come from? We’ve always been pretty obsessed with neon type and old signage. I guess when we spoke to Addict and found out they were keen for us to do a type based piece, that is where we probably started from without necessarily knowing it. We didn’t want it to just be neon type though, so we began to fuck about with a style we’d explored for the guys behind Sunset Overdrive earlier in he year. We wanted to push it on and create a new aesthetic we hadn’t hit before.

Are you happy with the first Addict X ILD venture? Yes its been great to be involved. It’s funny when we look back, many of the original team here were influenced in one way or another by the stuff Addict was doing on the south coast years back. It kinda feels like that inspiration has come full circle with this collab.

What does the future hold for ILD? What can we expect to see from you guys?We have a few big Nike projects dropping soon that we are pretty stoked with but can’t discuss yet, alongside these we’re also working on a bit of a redux on our studio portfolio. So keep checking back in 2015.

How can we find out and see more work from your team? Instagram? Twitter? The best channels to catch what we’ve been cooking up would definitely be instagram and twitter: @ilovedust

Our site gets updated when we have a spare five minutes, but that never seems to happen at the minute!

MEGAMUNDEN X ADDICTMegamunden takes time out to talk about his

latest Addict collaboration, his recent work and some exciting projects lined up for 2015...

Words: Jay Hamdaoui

Addict x Megamunden

roughly 2 final designs in a day, towards the end I was occasionally finalising 6 designs per day. I’m really thankful to Laurence King Publishing firstly for asking me to do the book, and secondly for what its done for my drawing. Also none of it would have come together without the support and efforts of Johnny McCulloch. He’s a good friend of mine, work colleague at Ilovedust and the guy I chose to do the design work on the book. - big thanks to ‘Johnny Mac’.

Have you always been interested in tattoo art?For a long time I’ve had an interest in Japanese artwork and this has led me to take an interest in tattoo styles… this interest has developed over the past 7 or 8 years.

Who inspires you? I’d start with James Jean, I’ve been a fan of his for a long time. I love how he’s crossed borders from illustrator and comic book cover artist, to fine artist and recently I’ve seen him going back to some more illustrative style work which is making me very happy, as that is what i like from him most! Moving on from that I’d say Plastic Kid, John McFaul, Phunk Studio, Hydro 74, ILoveDust, were an influence when I was really beginning to understand the illustration industry and watching it grow… it was looking at what these guys were doing amongst many others that showed me you could carve a career in illustration.

What’s your first memory of Addict? The first thing that comes into my head is the SheOne Camo pattern and the Camobot toys also, but I’m sure I was a fan for quite a while before those came out. I owned about three jackets, intact I still have them now. I was doing a huge sort out of my clothes over Christmas and was about to put my jet black waterproof addict windbreaker style jacket in the ‘hand me down pile’… but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. The jackets are what always stick in my mind about Addict. And them supporting Artists and Musicians. It felt local, but good quality you know? A brand to take seriously, that were hooking up with good people, but it felt accessible too. That’s why I liked it back then.

For your first ever Addict Guest Artist tee you chose to use a ‘Death Moth’ design from your book. Can you tell us a bit more about where the design came from? The moth makes an appearance in my book… but it was never really meant as a ‘main artwork’ it’s used on the back of a poster. But after the book was out it was one of my, and many other people that made comment on the book’s favourite images. So it seemed only right to make more of it and use it as a bit of an icon to represent me in this first ADDIOT X MEGAMUNDEN collaboration. Addict were one of the first brands back in my skater kid days that I ‘REALLY’ got ‘INTO’ so for me all these years later to be doing a collaboration with you guys means a lot - Thank you.

What can we expect to see from you in 2015? Is there anything you’re looking forward to?There’s a lot in store. I’m looking forward to dedicating some time to helping put ILD on the map in my hometown of Brighton as we are opening a studio there which I’ll be based in. On the MEGAMUNDEN front I’d like to begin work on another show, perhaps to open in 2016 but we will see how I get on as I have some ideas I want to try out.

How can people find out more about you? Twitter? Instagram?Twitter/Instagram @MEGAMUNDENMEGAMUNDEN.COM

It’s been a busy year for you. What have you been working on?Hey Addict Crew. Yes, I always try and keep busy. The early part of 2014 was all about getting my first solo show sorted. ‘The MEGAMUNDEN Show’ was held at NoWalls Gallery in Brighton. I was stoked to have it there and have my work amongst such good company - OBEY (Shepard Fairey) Banksy, Eine to name a few.I also collaborated a lot with people I wanted to work with. I worked with Raw & Auburn to create some bespoke leather items, passport holder, coins holders and that sort of thing. And the ‘Piece de Resistance’ was a later engraved hand made guitar that I worked on with Jeff Nichols from Portland, Oregon (USA). Again black and Gold… a real show stopper! Oh…I didn’t mention I was opened a motorcycle apparel and lifestyle goods store! Check it out - mondaymoco.com.

What was the first job to help get yourself established and your name out there? The first BIG illustrative job I worked on was for Vodafone. I had been working in London as a Graphic Designer for a year and a half… but my passion for illustration was growing by the day and I realised it was what I wanted to do. Around that time I’d been in touch with one of my old tutors john McFaul, he was getting more and more work and considering taking on a ‘sidekick’… that ended up being me. The Vodafone job came in which involved creating 4 huge illustrated world images that were to be used on huge billboards, buses and bus stops all around the country. It was an incurable feeling to see a project I’d been so heavily involved with in every town I visited… and after that things for McFaul went from strength to strength and it wasn’t long before I worked full time with John.

You’re also a Senior Designer at ILD. How did you link up with them?Yes I am, the guys recently changed my title to Lead Designer, which again was a really nice thing to happen.I’ve been illustrating a fair while now every single day… so to have the guys give me that little tip of the cap was a proud moment for me. The link up came through me working with John and forming what became McFaul Studio. We used to share a studio with the ILD guys back then for a year or 2. Back then they were only about 8 people… and I got to know Mark, Ben, Johnny W, Matt, Bruce, Ingi and Shan pretty well. I’d always loved what ILD do they really have punched out continuously ‘cool shit’ for so many years now. So when Mark got talking to me about potentially coming to work for them I was keen to hear what was on offer.4 years have passed now and I’m glad I did.

You’re a versatile artist. You’ve worked on a range of different jobs from designing tees to painting huge murals. What’s your favourite project to work on?I guess I just try to be an illustrator that can draw. Whether that’s on a wall, a piece of paper or digitally… I don’t want it to matter to me so I really try and keep up that balance of working across a range of types of work. I wouldn’t say I have a real favourite type of work as what I enjoy most is the variety, it means things don’t get repetitive.

You recently released a colour in book using work from your tattoo collection. Tell us more…I could lie here and say the idea came to me in a dream, or I cracked a fortune cookie and the concept smacked me straight in the face... But the truth is that it was actually the publisher who approached me with the idea of doing the book. The book has done the world of good for my drawing skills, with such a volume of work to produce in limited time it meant that my process sped up, in the early stages of the project I was drawing

チェックしてください!mondaymoco.com

Moth(蛾)はよく使います。
