Dionne Hélène

SHOP artworking assistant Dionne

Hélène is a graphic designer and

sneaker obsessive, who has worked

on projects for Nike, the V&A and

Something & Sons. Her favourite

place to shop is Liberty’s, and in her

spare time she enjoys collaborating

with Crepe City, illustrating, col-

lecting vintage Ralph Lauren and

listening to Action Bronson.

Elle Blakeman

Elle Blakeman is editor-in-chief of

the Mayfair Magazine. She has pre-

viously worked at Harper’s Bazaar,

InStyle and Marie Claire, and spe-

cialises in luxury lifestyle and travel

features. In this issue of SHOP, she

writes about the secret of looking

efortlessly stylish in the great out-

doors when the temperature in Aus-

tria plummets.

Ray Oranges

Ray Oranges created this season’s

cover illustration for SHOP Aus-

tria. His eye-catching artwork has

previously been commissioned by

Wallpaper Magazine, Deutsch Inc

and Modus, among others. His

clever use of space and scale makes

him the perfect illustrator for this

cover, inspired by our feature on

how to dress well for the Austri-

an winter on page 24. It shows a

woman whose scarf is rippling out

to become wintry hills, mountains

and buildings.

INSIDE STORY

Brühl in Graz has come up with

an interesting way to incorporate

the more contemporary oferings

of German fashion and accessories

label Riani without compromis-

ing on the ambience of the already

established store. The answer is

a shop-in-shop, housing Riani’s

collections neatly within its exist-

HERITAGE MADE MODERN

Parisian fashion house Hermès

has been creating beautiful silk

scarves since 1937. The brand has a

rich equestrian heritage, refected in

the horse motif of this design, which

has been thoroughly modernised

with a comic book-style interpreta-

tion. The frst Hermès scarves were

made with innovative yarn spun

from raw Chinese silk, immediately

attracting the attention of the most

stylish Parisians. Today each scarf is

woven from the silk of 250 silkworm

cocoons. Each design takes years

to create as skilled artists search

for the perfect inspirations before

each design is individually screen-

printed. The company is constantly

developing to remain at the top of

its game. A scarf from Hermès is a

piece of heritage made modern. hl

RETRO REVIVAL

In a rejection of the digital age,

the ever-growing Lomography

community heralds the virtues of

analogue photography and artistic

experimentation. The company

was established in Vienna in the

1990s when a group of students

discovered an old Russian Lomo

LC-A camera and were inspired

by the distinctive photographs it

produced, characterised by vibrant

colour, deep saturation and vi-

gnette framing. The friends agreed

a distribution deal for the camera

and founded Lomography, propel-

ling the camera to international

fame. The company has since gone

on to produce faithful replicas of

other retro camera designs, in cas-

ings as fun and colourful as the im-

ages they produce. The Diana F+

Mr Pink is one of the company’s

best-selling models. gl

TAILORED TO YOU

Multi-brand womenswear bou-

tique Popp & Kretschmer has an im-

pressive roster of designer brands.

From long-established names such

as Roberto Cavalli and Moschino to

younger, trend-defning labels such

as Mary Katrantzou, the store pres-

ents a precisely curated collection.

Yet for Popp & Kretschmer, fashion

is about more than the garments

themselves. The store’s speciality is

its in-house tailoring service, which

allows pieces to be individually ft-

ted to the client. Stylists and tailors

will talk you through every element

of the look, taking precise measure-

BRIGHT THING

Youthful fashion brand Bershka

has opened a new store in Vienna,

located on Mariahilfer Strasse.

State-of-the-art lighting, music,

video screens and projections of

colourful graphics make each

Bershka store an extension of the

brand’s philosophy, designed to

ofer a comfortable and fun envi-

ronment for adventurous and style-

conscious young visitors. The store

is split into trend-focused sections,

and ofers a large selection of cloth-

ing for women and men ranging

from functional basics to the latest

fashions. The autumn/winter col-

BAGS FOR LIFE

Ina Kent established her epony-

mous accessories label in 2007.

Her desire was to create something

which played with the balance be-

tween aesthetics and functional-

ity, and so her range of practical

yet stylish bags was born. Using

robust leathers, Ina Kent bags are

made to be used again and again.

The laid-back designs are loved for

their simplicity, and Kent sticks

to a tried and tested formula, ex-

perimenting with materials and

colours but retaining the no-non-

sense shapes that gained her an au-

dience in the frst place. mkh

Lef: the festive season in Innsbruck /81

Far from mourning the loss of

summer in Austria, here the winter

season brings a calendar of events

so delightful that you will be pray-

pine trees and scores of fairy lights,

while locals sell everything from

candles and festive decorations

to biscuits and mulled wine that

perfume the streets with the spicy

sweet aroma of Christmas.

While Austria is a wonder-

ful place to be in colder weather,

dressing to enjoy it demands real

sartorial skill. While summer rev-

ellers can fit out of the door un-

encumbered by serious thoughts

or heavy outerwear, their winter

counterparts must take more heed

of the conditions outside. Thank-

fully, there are several high-fashion

options to help you brave the ele-

Winter in Austria is not

a time for drawing the

curtains and retreating

indoors until spring. In fact, the

very opposite is true; the country’s

winter season, from Salzburg to

Vienna, is a social whirl in which

style, culture and a sense of the

grand occasion take centre stage.

The grande dame of these

lavish occasions is the world-re-

nowned Wiener Opernball (Vi-

enna Opera Ball), held every Feb-

ruary at the elegant opera house.

This annual event is a time when

the members of Austria’s high so-

ciety can don their fnery, relive

the glory days of the past and em-

brace the glorious ceremony of it

all. In fact, from September until

the gradual emergence of spring,

Austria’s social calendar is heaving

with cultural riches: the Internatio-

nales Brahmsfest Mürzzuschlag,

added drama to any evening dress,

as do Baumann’s gleaming, geo-

metric jewellery pieces.

Jewellery is a key component of

the winter-glamour wardrobe, and

nods discreetly to Austria’s place

as a leader in the feld throughout

the decades – who can forget Franz

Xaver Winterhalter’s iconic por-

trait of Empress Elisabeth of Aus-

tria with a constellation of glinting

stars in her hair? For women with

modern-day empress aspirations,

Michaela Arl de Lima creates lav-

ish, multi-strand coral necklaces,

Design Week, the biennial Vien-

nale flm festival, Le Grand Bal at

Vienna’s Hofburg palace, Mozart

Woche in Salzburg … Thankfully,

Austria’s fashion labels and the

stores that make the local scene so

enticing have a wealth of suitably

operatic eveningwear for every

stylish event.

Sight, a cult concept store in

central Vienna run by fashion duo

Vivien Sakura Brandl and Mario

Kiesenhofer, focuses on promoting

cool and innovative designers from

across Austria, Europe and Scan-

dinavia, with local names such as

Andrea Auer, Büro Baumann and

the candlelight at Le Grand Bal.

And when it’s time to make a

spectacular entrance? Viennese-

born Anelia Peschev understands

the importance of a show-stopping

dress that will ft in with the city’s

glamorous social diary. Intricately

beaded, richly embroidered and in

saturated jewel tones, her timeless

formal gowns are positively oper-

Traditional Austrian cuisine makes for ideal comfort food

for winter, as Isabella Redmond

Styles discovers on a tour of the country’s fnest restaurants

toric Linzer torte, which features shortcrust pastry with jam and a distinctive lattice top.

Austria is also home to some of Europe’s oldest restaurants, and many of the country’s historic eat-eries proudly uphold the region’s rich culinary heritage. Even so, there are a growing number of res-taurants catering to more interna-tional tastes, ofering menus that range from fresh, authentically Asian favours to those pioneering a farm-to-table concept. Expect to find a restaurant to suit every taste.

When looking for winter comfort food, there are few better culi-nary destinations than Austria. The country’s traditional dishes, including Tafelspitz (boiled beef served with horseradish), a selec-tion of savoury and sweet dump-lings and, of course, apple strudel, are known for their heartiness. Vis-itors to Austria with a sweet tooth are sure to be satisfed by the coun-try’s extensive range of desserts and pastries. The most famous are the indulgent Sacher torte, a rich chocolate cake, and the his-

The kitchen combines traditional Tyrolean dishes such as Speck dumplings with haute-

cuisine favourites such as foie gras with efortless skill. The restau-rant’s alpine-inspired interior pro-vides a perfect hideaway on cold winter nights, featuring wood-panelled walls, traditional furnish-ings and foral accents throughout. Graz’s annual Christmas markets become

one of the city’s most popular attractions

as soon as the temperature drops. Every

December a spectacular market is held

in front of the Rathaus, playing host to an

array of stalls selling a selection of handi-

crafts and traditional food and drink. Opt

for the local speciality Feuerzangenbowle,

a mix of hot wine and flaming rum which is

sure to be warming. The market is suitable

for the whole family, with entertainment op-

tions including a carousel, which is certain

to appeal to younger visitors.

30: A Night To Remember

Page 85: SHOP Austria AW14

85

Page 86: SHOP Austria AW14

globalblue.com

86

Büro Baumann.

Ludwig Reiter.
