—BriefShogun Audio is one of the most respected and forward thinking labels in the Drum & Bass industry. Being a pioneer of the scene since the beginning of the genre, Shogun Audio is rich in history, with a back catalogue comprised of legendary artists and producers.

To celebrate their tenth year in business, the label commissioned us to create a limited edition boxset. The contents of the boxset would be a collection of vinyl and CDs detailing the past, present and future of the label. A documentary DVD and fold out poster would accompany the music, telling the story of a decade of Shogun Audio.

With a track list of 62 songs, 13 of which are brand new, the boxset has a huge appeal not only to the Drum & Bass community, but to vinyl collectors alike.

—SolutionSo as to not conflict with the vast back catalogue of contrasting artwork, we wanted to keep the boxset timeless, minimalist, yet undeniably Shogun Audio. A new logo was created, a combination of their existing mark, the Japanese symbol for ‘Shogun’, and an X, the Roman numeral for 10. Taking on board the budget restrictions, and in keeping with the 10 year theme, we suggested a 10” box housing 10” vinyl, as opposed to the more common 12”. In line with Shogun Audio’s Japanese ties, we chose a distinctly Japanese colour palette of red, white and black.

The box is entirely black, with the new logo central on the lid. Small touches of red and white decorate each of the four sides. The unboxing experience is that of stark contrasting reds and blacks. Sat inside the black box are 6 red vinyl, each with black labels. Underneath the red vinyl are 4 black CD and DVD slipcases sat in a red tray. Inside the slipcases are black labelled discs.




—SolutionThe red fold-out poster details every Shogun Audio release to date, along with a montage of past record covers, flyers and event photography. The posters reverse shows the new logo sat against a black background.

—ConclusionSince the limited release in December 2014 the boxset has entirely sold out. The collection received praise from music journalists worldwide, and has propelled the label into legendary status and cemented Shogun Audio as a timeless bastion of bass music.
