SHMS Hour of Code:

SHMS students are participating in an hour of code in all of our computer labs during the course of Computer Science Education week (Dec 9-Dec 15). What an Hour of Code provides is an opportunity for every student to experience computer science for one hour.

FREE HEART SCREENING FOR KIDS AND TEENS

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22ND, 2014 STRATH HAVEN MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Eighth Grade class is partnering with Aidan’s Heart Foundation to fight and prevent sudden cardiac ar-

rest in children. We are pleased to report that we raised over $1000 at our Volley Ball Tournament on No-

vember 14 for this worthy cause. Aidan's Heart Foundation is committed to providing awareness, education,

and support to the communities of the southeast Pennsylvania region and its surrounding area to create heart-

safe communities for youth regarding the prevention of and/or response to Sudden Cardiac Arrest. For more

We are also pleased to report that Aidan’s Heart Foundation has partnered with doctors at CHOP to provide

free cardiac screenings to our schools and community. On Saturday February 22, 2014, healthcare providers

from CHOP will be at the Strath Haven Middle School to provide free cardiac screenings to children and stu-

Aidan’s Heart Foundation and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia have offered priority preregistration to

West Chester University Pre-Collegiate Piano Competition: If any student is interested in participating in this contest, please see Mrs. Van Druff for details. It is a two

round competition with the first one on Feb. 14, 2014, and if chosen, the 2nd round is April 13, 2014. The

divisions are by age: 9—12, 13—15 and 16—18. Prizes range from $100.00 to $1000.00 along with full

tuition to study with a world renowned pianist in June. Mrs. Van Druff has detailed information.

Fever Day:

Dear 7th Grade Parents, As an interdisciplinary activity, seventh grade will participate in “Fever Day” on Wednesday, December 18th. Students are reading the book Fever 1793. They are also learning about diseas-es in science class and the Revolutionary time period in social studies. In the morning, students will rotate through several different activities, such as acting out Fever Charades, preparing food for the “Cook Coffeehouse” and making 18th century bracelets. In the afternoon, there will be a quiz show in the auditorium during which members of the Capitols team will be competing against members of the Apollos team in “Fever Family Feud.” We are very excited about this day! We are asking for volunteers and donations for the Cook Coffeehouse. If you are able to contrib-ute please visit the sign-up genius below. Parents Needed for May Career Day!

Although May might seem far, far off — sometime next year, even — the organizers of

the Dimensions in Living day are hard at work trying to find presenters. So if you have a career

that students might enjoy hearing about, please contact Janet Long

(jlong@integritysearchinc.com), DIL committee chair. The event will be May 21, 11:30 am –

2:30 pm. If you’re on the fence, but interested, just let her know and she can give you details

even if you’re afraid of commitment.

It’s a fun-filled day filled with adoring fans, and comes with a luncheon honoring speakers.

Plus, no speaking experience necessary. And looks great on your CV.

Past speakers have included chefs, computer scientists, fashion designers, fire chiefs, judges,

and — of course — rock musicians.
