Nitrogen is a chemical compound that is odorless, colorless, and tasteless. Nitrogen has the symbol N, its atomic number is 7, and it’s atomic mass is 14.00674µ (mu). Nitrogen was discovered by a Scottish physcian named Daniel Rutherford in 1772. It is in a gaseous state.

Nitrogen is used in one of the most common things today. Beer. A can of beer is pressurized by using a widget( a nitrogenated ball). The widget vaporizes and expands. The purpose of the widget was to create more bubbles and make a creamier beer.

Liquid nitrogen is pure nitrogen in a liquid state. It’s boiling point is 77 K (−196 °C; −321 °F). Nitrogen is a cryogenic substance ( freezing) which can cause rapid frostbite. Nitrogen freezes at 63 K.

WHY DOES IT BOIL? Liquid Nitrogen is so cold it

boils. The reason that it boils is that liquid Nitrogen is -321 degrees farenheit. When poured into a container at room temperature ,the container is much more warmer that the cold Liquid Nitrogen. The reaction between the cold Nitrogen and warm container causes the Nitrogen to vaporize(Boil). It’s like putting water onto a hot frying pan. The water sizzles and vaporizes.

Yes, nitrogen is deadly, when a person breaths pure nitrogen they exhale carbon dioxide with no oxygen at all. Nitrogen essentially causes asphyxiation. Normal air is about 78 percent nitrogen ,21 percent oxygen, 1 percent argon, carbon dioxide, and other gases. With a few breaths of nitrogen, your level of oxygen is almost gone because the nitrogen is filling your system and not letting your body receive oxygen.

One way Nitrogen is used in everyday life is in cryogenics, or freezing. Many hospitals use nitrogen to freeze eggs, blood, and sperm. Nitrogen is also used in light-bulbs, photograph, airbags, explosives, to maintain freshness of foods, and fertilizer.

When Air touches Nitrogen in, any way, the nitrogen cause the air to shrink. An example is a ballon, after you dip it in nitrogen the air in the ballon is condensing. The nitrogen causes pressure and causes the molecules to slow down and shrink.
