  • 5Happy ChristmasThe other night I had a dream. It wasnot a good one. In the dream, I wasin a big room with perhaps onehundred people, and all of theattendees were there to celebrateChristmas. Suddenly the groupstarted a heated debate on why

Christmas should no longer be celebrated and an ugly fight broke outamongst the audience. I was observing and thinking it was not right. Then somebody pushed me so hard that I lost my balance and almostfell on an elderly woman who started crying. I apologised to her andslapped the man who had pushed me. Then I offered my arm to thewoman and we left the room together.Christmas means peace to me. It is all about a Child who made adifference in our world. I am not interested in trees, decorations, presents and parties. We gave gifts and cards up many years ago andevery year we send a donation to the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital. Our small donation makes a difference in the lives of a woman andrestores her dignity. There is no better gift. www.fistulafoundation.org

  • 7Not To-Do List for 2014I have decided to start a list of timewasters that I will cut out from mydaily schedule. I will not wait until2014: I am already practising.First, I do not check 4 of my 6 emailaddresses before lunch. Not onlydoes this help me get more doneduring my morning magic timehours, but it also prevents me fromhaving my day ruined by some

negative feedback. In the past, I would often rush with smug repliesand witty retorts that left an unpleasant taste in my mouth.I have also cut back on negative Twitter and refuse to get into onlineconfrontations. I no longer mindlessly surf the Internet and have much more time toattend to my books. I might even dust some cobwebs and refresh acouple of languages I used to be fluent in.I have already cleared some 50% of the newsletters or websites Isubscribed to.I will not enter into unprofitable, time-consuming projects andrelationships. Hanging around negative, gossiping people destroysones soul and does not enrich ones life.

I will not fill my days with wrongactivities and find myself in a rut, doing the same wrong things overand over again. I will try harder to carry the burden ofthe weakest and poorest among usand will be less set in my ways.I really want to take a new path.

Farewell, Nelson MandelaI marched when I was still a child to protestagainst apartheid, a disgusting concept. Ijoined, once a week for nearly four years, the supporters of the Non-Stop Picket andstood on the pavement directly in front ofthe South African embassys gates. Wewould engage passing members of thepublic and asked them to sign the petition

calling for the release of Nelson Mandela. By the time the Non-StopPicket celebrated its 1000th day on 12 January 1989, over half a millionsignatures had been collected. On 14 March 1987, I was one of the5,000 people who marched six miles across London on the Marchfor Mandela. I also celebrated his release from prison in TrafalgarSquare on 11 February 1990. I feel that Nelson Mandela has alwaysbeen part of my life and was saddened by his death. In his words:What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is whatdifference we have made to the lives of others that will determine thesignificance of the life we lead.

A new theoryAn article on Christmas dinners for type 0 blood caught my attention. Please read Eat Right 4 Your Type on page 20 to learn what is behindthis concept. We are all blood type 0 in the family so we should eat:white sweet potatoes; the mash should be a fusion of parsnips andyellow sweet potatoes; Yorkshire puddings should be made of speltflour, which contains protein, which of course, is better for the 'O' type, who needs protein more than carbohydrates. The main meat will be beef, lamb or veal. Shame I am a vegetarian! Weshould be drinking fizzy water, juices from the fruits that are good forus (pineapple, mango, cherry), red wine and green tea.The vegetable serving bowls will contain broccoli, kale, spinach, artichokes and parsnips. Traditional peas and carrots would just bethere for fun and decoration, as they carry no special benefits for the'O' type, but will also not harm us. We should find that we feelenergised and healthier by incorporating these changes into our diet.We will try and report back.

    LETS TALKABOUTGMO

The Rise of Corporate TerrorismLast year, the first-ever lifetime feeding study assessing the health risks of geneticallyengineered Roundup Ready corn was published

Last month, Food and Chemical Toxicology retracted the study saying it did not meetscientific standards

While no errors or misrepresentation of data were found, the journal stated the study hadtoo small a sample size to make any definite conclusion about health effects. This is inclear violation of retraction guidelines for scientific publishing

Earlier this year, the publisher created a brand new editorial position, Associate Editor forBiotechnology: Richard E. Goodman, a former Monsanto scientist, got the job.

The bizarre justification for retracting the feeding study is enough to indicate thatcorporate terrorism has seized the field and is actively undermining science as weknow it.

Ever since the introduction of genetically engineered (GE) seeds in the mid-1990s, the market for these chemical-dependent crops have spawned amultibillion dollar industry. Funding for the development of more varieties ofGE crop varieties has come primarily from the privately-owned chemicaltechnology industry itself. Over the last 15 years, conflicts of interest withinscience have exponentially increased, and at this point, it is blatantly obviousthat financial conflicts of interest play a major role when it comes to whatresearch is done; what gets published, and what doesnt. Conflicts of interest are also at the heart of yet another round of controversyrevolving around genetically engineered foods. Corinne Lepage, a Memberof the European Parliament and former French environment minister, recentlycalled for the resignation of Anne Glover, chief scientific adviser to theEuropean Commission. Glover, a GMO-advocate, was appointed to herposition two years ago. Now, all of a suddenfor the first time since 1996the commission is considering authorizing the cultivation of GM corn in

Europe. Coincidence? Lepage doesnt think so. Do you?Other scientists have also spoken out about the abuse and intimidation theysuffer simply for publishing findings that point to problems relating togenetically engineered foods. In September 2012, the first-ever lifetime feeding study assessing the healthrisks of genetically engineered (GE) Roundup Ready corn (NK603) waspublished in Reed Elseviers peer-reviewed journal, Food and ChemicalToxicology. The two-year long study led by Gilles-Eric Sralini revealed shocking healtheffects, including massive tumors and early death.Rats given glyphosate in their drinking water also developed tumors.Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Monsantos herbicide Roundup, whichhas recently been implicated as a major contributor to chronic disease.Needless to say, Sralinis findings set off a fire-storm of opposition from theindustry.Last month, the publisher retracted the study saying it did not meet scientificstandards. While no errors or misrepresentation of data were found, thestudy had too small a sample size to make any definite conclusion abouthealth effects, Elsevier said.According to Reuters: The journal said that while it received many lettersexpressing concerns about the validity of the findings, the proper use ofanimals and even allegations of fraud, its own investigation found noevidence of fraud or intentional misrepresentation of the data. However, thereis a legitimate cause for concern regarding both the number of animals ineach study group and the particular strain selected. As stated by Corinne Lepage at a November 28 press conference, Sralinispaper raised valid questions about the safety of GMOs and Roundup, andretracting the paper will not make these questions disappear.Jol Spiroux de Vendmois, physician and co-author of the Sralini papercalled the retraction a public health scandal, noting that the journal hadalready scrutinized the study more closely than other papers prior topublishing. And the European Network of Scientists for Social andEnvironmental Responsibility issued a statement calling the retraction atravesty of science that looks like a bow to industry.

Please look carefully at the poster on page 14. I no longer buy products madeby Del Monte, Naked, Green & Blacks, Bayer etc. and reward the TrueOrganic Heroes. Stand with me against corporate terrorism and read moreon the subject clicking in the link below.http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/12/17/seralini-gmo-study-retracted.aspx?e_cid=20131217Z2_DNL_art_1&utm_source=dnl&utm_medium=email&utm_content=art1&utm_campaign=20131217Z2&et_cid=DM35345&et_rid=369941796

Eat Right 4 Your Type: Blood TypesOne of the hallmarks of alternative medicine is the recognition of thebiochemical uniqueness of each individual and the need to tailor treatmentsand prescriptions to match that individual variability. While a person's geneticcode, ultimately, is the basis of this individuality, basing treatments on geneticfactors is too broad an approach and not consistent with alternativemedicine. According to naturopath Peter J. D'Adamo, N.D., in his book Eat Right 4Your Type, the missing link might be the four basic blood types: O, A, B, andAB. There had to be a reason why there were so many paradoxes in dietarystudies and disease survival, why some people lose weight and others donot on the same diet or why some people keep their vitality as they age, andothers do not, says Dr. D'Adamo. His research into anthropology, medical history, and genetics led him toconclude that blood type is the key that unlocks the door to the mysteriesof health, disease, longevity, physical vitality, and emotional strength. Dr.D'Adamo explains that the practical application of the blood type key isthat it enables you to make informed choices about your dietary, exercise, supplement, and even medical treatment plans. With the blood type roadmap these plans can now correspond to your exact biological profile andthe dynamic natural forces within your own body.

Type O - People with type O blood fare best on intense physical exercise andanimal proteins and less well on dairy products and grains, says Dr.D'Adamo. Dr. D'Adamo believes that the leading reason for weight gainamong Type Os is the gluten found in wheat products and, to a lesser extent, lentils, corn, kidney beans, and cabbage. Ideal exercises for Type Os includeaerobics, martial arts, contact sports, and running. Type A - Those with blood type A, however, are more naturally suited to avegetarian diet and foods that are fresh, pure, and organic. As Type As arepredisposed to heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, Dr. D'Adamo says thatI can't emphasize how critical this dietary adjustment can be to the sensitiveimmune system of Type A. Type A's prefer calming, centering exercise, suchas yoga and tai chi. Type B - Type Bs have a strong immune system and a tolerant digestivesystem and tend to resist many of the severe chronic degenerative illnesses,or at least survive them better than the other blood types. Type Bs do bestwith moderate physical exercise requiring mental balance, such as hiking, cycling, tennis, and swimming.

  • 21

Type AB - Blood type AB, the most recent, in terms of evolution, of the fourgroups and an amalgam of types A and B, is the most biologically complex. For this group, a combination of the exercises for types A and B works best. Blood type, with its digestive and immune specificity, is a window on a person'sprobable susceptibility to or power over disease, according to Dr. D'Adamo. Forexample, Type Os are the most likely to suffer from asthma, hay fever, and otherallergies, while Type Bs have a high allergy threshold, and will react allergically only if theyeat the wrong foods. Type Bs are also especially susceptible to autoimmune disorders, such as chronic fatigue, lupus, and multiple sclerosis. Type ABs tend to have the fewestproblems with allergies, while heart disease, cancer, and anemia are medical risks forthem. With arthritis, Type Os, again, are the predominant sufferers because theirimmune systems are environmentally intolerant especially to foods suchas grains and potatoes which can produce inflammatory reactions in theirjoints. Types A and B are the most susceptible to diabetes, while types A andAB have an overall higher rate of cancer and poorer survival odds than theother types. While you cannot change your blood type, you can use knowledge about itsnature to implement a dietary plan biologically suited to your makeup, saysDr. D'Adamo, who supplies copious details on eating plans for all four types. "Most of my patients experience some results [within two weeks of startingthe diet plan]-increased energy, weight loss, a lessening of digestivecomplaints, and improvement of chronic conditions such as asthma, headaches, and heartburn."

Using family history and blood type, as well as simple diagnostic tools likefingerprint analysis and measurement of jaw angle, Dr. D'Adamo shows youhow to map out your genetic makeup to discover which of the six GenoTypeplans is right for you. GenoType 1 - The HunterTall, thin, and intense, with an overabundance of adrenaline and a fierce, nervous energy that winds down with age, the Hunter was originally thesuccess story of the human species. Vulnerable to systemic burnout whenoverstressed, the Hunter's modern challenge is to conserve energy for thelong haul.GenoType 2 - The GathererFull-figured, even when not overweight, the Gatherer struggles with bodyimage in a culture where thin is in. An unsuccessful crash dieter with a hostof metabolic challenges, the Gatherer becomes a glowing example of healthwhen properly nourished.

GenoType 3 - The TeacherStrong, sinewy, and stable, with great chemical synchronicity and stamina, the Teacher is built for longevity - given the right diet and lifestyle. This is thegenotype of balance, blessed with a tremendous capacity for growth andfulfillment.GenoType 4 - The ExplorerMuscular and adventurous, the Explorer is a biological problem solver, withan impressive ability to adapt to environmental changes, and a better thanaverage capacity for gene repair. The Explorer's vulnerability to hormonalimbalances and chemical sensitivities can be overcome with a balanced dietand lifestyle.GenoType 5 - The WarriorLong, lean, and healthy in youth, the Warrior is subject to a bodily rebellionin midlife. With the optimal diet and lifestyle, the Warrior can overcome thequick-aging metabolic genes and experience a second, silver age of health.GenoType 6 - The NomadA GenoType of extremes, with a great sensitivity to environmentalconditionsespecially changes in altitude and barometric pressure, theNomad is vulnerable to neuromuscular and immune problems. Yet a well-conditioned Nomad has the enviable gift of controlling caloric intake andaging gracefully. Find out more in www.dadamo.com

My Tuscan pantry, with a few additionsI do not buy pre-packed meals andcook at least once a day from freshingredients. However, in my Tuscanpantry, I always have some staplefoods for emergencies. Organic extra virgin olive oil is astaple in the Mediterranean diet aswell as an anti-inflammatory diet. The oil is comprised mostly of monounsaturated fatty acids, which havebeen found to reduce the risk ofheart disease and lower totalcholesterol levels while normalizing

blood clotting and regulating blood sugar. We do not use olive oil forcooking, but drizzle it onto a salad or add it to foods after they arecooked to enhance their flavour. It takes less than 10 minutes to preparea great bruschetta.

Lentils, also a Mediterranean favourite, that are high in protein andcontain about 17 grams of fiber per 115g. You can make lentil soup oradd them to soups, you can serve them warm as a side dish or tossthem with olive oil and garlic.

Raw nuts and seeds make a great snack that satisfies hunger and keepyou feeling fuller longer. I stock up on walnuts, almonds, pecans, cashews as well as sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, or even hempseeds. They offer a host of health benefits and can help burn stubbornbelly fat as well, stabilize blood sugar and reduce cravings for unhealthyfoods.

I use quinoa in place of oatmeal or rice or mix it into baked goods orcasseroles it is extremely versatile and filling too. Quinoa is oftenreferred to as a whole grain, but its actually a seed. It contains theperfect balance of all nine amino acids essential for human nutrition andit has a delicious nutty taste.

Herbal teas that are an excellent replacement for sugary drinks and canalso offer a solution to a number of ailments. Peppermint and ginger canaid stomach upset, chamomile help ward off insomnia and Echinaceacan shorten the duration of a cold or flu. Green tea contains lots ofantioxidants that help to provide energy and strengthen the immunesystem.

Canned organic vegetables can be an important staple, especially in thewinter when there are not as many fresh vegetables available. If you haveto purchase veggies, choose those packaged in non-BPA lined cans or,even better, glass jars. Canned organic vegetables are extremely usefulin preparing quick meals and bulking up recipes to make them more

As olive oil is not the best for cooking, I use coconut oil. It is one of therichest sources of healthy saturated fat. Populations who eat a largepercentage of calories from coconuts are known to be much healthierthan those in other countries. Coconut oil contains medium chain fattyacids that are resistant to high heat and can easily turn into ketonebodies in the liver. The ketone bodies provide energy for the brain andcan be used to improve a wide variety of health issues.

Almond flour is a staple for anyone who wants to avoid gluten, and thereare multiple reasons that most people should. It can be used to replacestandard refined or wheat flours in many baking recipes. Coconut flourcan also be a great substitute for regular flour.

I do not like milk and find organic coconut milk a great vegan-friendlysubstitute for traditional milk. It is high in plant-based energy- burning,short-chained fatty acids and also contains antiviral and antibacterialproperties. The saturated fat it contains is good for you and will also helpto increase fullness. I use it in smoothies.

Dried herbs and spices add lots of flavour to a dish, most help to protectagainst chronic illness and a variety of health conditions like heartdisease, diabetes and cancer. Seasonings like cinnamon, often lead listsof commonly eaten foods with the highest levels of measured antioxidantactivity. Oregano, basil, parsley, cayenne, thyme, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, pepper, mustard powder, cardamom, coriander, cilantro, andturmeric are essential to my home cooking.

Tuna, which I buy in glass jars in Italy, can be used in many different ways:flake it and use it with any type of pasta; eat it accompanied byvegetables; make a quirky terrine with ricotta cheese, paprika and springonions.

Cantuccini, hard Tuscan biscuits with almonds, are an occasional treat, especially with Vin Santo, fortified white wine.

Figs contain a type of antioxidant called phenols, which may lower therisk for heart disease and cancer by preventing cell damage caused bydangerous free radicals. Fibre lowers risk for high cholesterol, heartdisease and constipation. The fibre in figs may also help lose weightsince it makes figs more filling, helping you eat fewer calories.

About eggs We had several hens in our gardenand they would lay at least 8 eggsevery day. The eggs were placedon a kitchen rack, neverrefrigerated, and would beconsumed within days of cominginto the house from the pen. Thepen was large and cleaned every

day. The eggs were dusted and washed only minutes beforebeing used. However, many store eggs in the refrigerator and would not think ofdoing it any other way. Indeed one should if the eggs go through anegg-washing process that may actually make them more susceptibleto contamination with bacteria like Salmonella. If an egg is infectedwith salmonella, the bacteria will multiply more quickly if the egg isstored at room temperature instead of in the refrigerator, particularly iftheyre stored for longer than 21 days. In industrial concentratedanimal feeding operations or CAFOs the risk of salmonellacontamination rises. In CAFOs, egg-laying hens are often crammed into tiny quarters.Disease is rampant, and the birds ARE filthy, not because of theirnature, but because they are removed from their natural habitat andtheir resistance to disease is compromised.Eggs from such large flocks and eggs from caged hens have manytimes more salmonella bacteria than eggs from smaller flocks, organically fed and free-ranging flocks.Theyre also more likely to be antibiotic-resistant strains, due to theflocks routine exposure to such drugs. When you have eggs from tensof thousands of chickens - or more - all under one roof, theres a goodchance theyre going to get faeces and other contaminants on them. The solution, rather than reducing the size of the flocks and ensuringbetter sanitation and access to the outdoors, is to wash the eggs. Butthis is not as innocuous as it sounds. As the eggs are scrubbed, rinsed, dried, and sprayed with a chlorine

mist, its protective cuticle may be compromised. This is a naturalbarrier that comes from the hen that lays the egg, and it acts as ashield against bacteria. It even contains antimicrobial properties. Egg-washing strips thisnatural protectant from the egg, which may actually make it more likelyto become contaminated. According to European Union guidelines:Such damage may favour trans-shell contamination with bacteria andmoisture loss and thereby increase the risk to consumers, particularlyif subsequent drying and storage conditions are not optimal.Industrial egg washing, by the way, is banned in much of Europe, notonly because of potential damage to the eggs cuticles but alsobecause it might allow for more sloppy egg-producing practices. The chief executive of Britains Egg Industry Council said: In Europe, the understanding is that [prohibiting the washing and cleaning ofeggs] actually encourages good husbandry on farms. It's in thefarmers' best interests then to produce the cleanest eggs possible,as no one is going to buy their eggs if they're dirty.Unfortunately, since an eggshell contains approximately 7,500 poresor openings, once the natural cuticle has been removed what's putON your egg goes INTO your egg: whatever the eggshell comes intocontact with can cross over this semi-permeable membrane and endup in your scrambled eggs, from chlorine to mineral oil to dish soap tosalmonella.European egg marketing regulations state that storing eggs in coldstorage and then leaving them out at room temperature could lead tocondensation, which could promote the growth of bacteria on the shellthat could probably get into the egg as well. The EU therefore advisesstoring eggs at a constant non-refrigerated temperature: EUguidelines therefore stipulate that eggs should be transported andstored at as constant a temperature as possible a temperaturebetween 66.2F and 69.8F in the winter and between 69.8F and73.4F in the summer. So, despite what you may have heard, eggs that are fresh and havean intact cuticle do not need to be refrigerated, as long as you aregoing to consume them within a relatively short period of time.

So, IF your eggs are very fresh, and IF their cuticle is intact, you donot have to refrigerate them. The bottom line is shelf life. The shelf lifefor an unrefrigerated egg is 7 to 10 days and for refrigerated, it's 30to 45 days. A good rule of thumb is one day at room temperature isequal to one week under refrigeration.Since most organic egg producers are typically interested in producinghigh-quality eggs, many of themespecially small, local farmingoperationshave implemented gentle washing methods that don'tcompromise the cuticle. However, you certainly can't tell by looking atthem what type of washing process they may have gone through. Theonly way to know if your eggs have been washed or oiled (and usingwhat agents) is to ask the producer - and the only way to do that isto buy from small local farmers you have direct contact with.Locally Raised Eggs Are Usually BestThe key here is to buy your eggs locally; this is even preferrable toorganic eggs from the grocery store. Finding high-quality organic eggslocally is not easy around Shirley. Farmers markets are another greatway to meet the people who produce your food. With face-to-facecontact, you can get your questions answered and know exactly whatyou're buying. Better yet, visit the farm - ask for a tour. If they havenothing to hide, they should be eager to show you their operation.Eggs ARE a Highly Nutritious FoodThere is a major misconception that one must avoid foods like eggsand saturated fat to protect ones heart. Eggs are an incredible sourceof high-quality protein and fatnutrients that many are deficient in.Eggs are a nearly ideal fuel source for most of us. The evidence clearlyshows that eggs are one of the most healthful foods one can eat, andcan actually help prevent disease, including heart disease. As for how to eat your eggs for optimal health, ideally the yolks shouldbe consumed raw, as the heat will damage many of the highlyperishable nutrients in the yolk. Additionally, the cholesterol in the yolkcan be oxidized with high temperatures, especially when it is incontact with the iron present in the whites and cooked, as inscrambled eggs, and such oxidation contributes to chronicinflammation in your body. Some Politically Incorrect Thoughts, perhapsI feel strongly against a faulty belief system, that is a belief system based on falsepremises. Every day I see persons caughtup in the Victimization Trap who seethemselves as helpless victims of an unjustworld. They are doomed to failure ormediocrity because they believe theycannot change anything in their lives.Civil rights are the foundation of a civilised

society and should be strongly defended but sloth is poisonous. Slothis the desire for ease and whatever we do in life requires effort. A lot ofeffort, for example, is required for a baby to learn how to walk.Everything we do is to be a means of salvation, if you are religious, or abetter life, if you are not. The slothful person is unwilling to do anythingbecause of the effort it takes to do it. Sloth becomes a sin when it slowsdown and even brings to a halt the energy we must expend in using themeans to salvation. Medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas said Sloth issluggishness of the mind which neglects to begin good... [it] is evil inits effect, if it so oppresses man as to draw him away entirely from gooddeeds. A human being is a creature of infinite desires, and it is quite acceptableto want to fulfill as many of those desires as possible. However, oneshould be aware that merely telling people that one wants something isnot likely to produce results.Neither are ones desires a need. The transformation of a desire intoa need is an integral component of the Victimization Trap. One doesnot need the newest gadgets or designers clothes. Need, of course,is a subjective word and there is no such thing as an absolute need ifnot for a roof over your head and food. One may think that one needsa Ferrari; I may be content with a Fiat. Neither of us is right or wrong;we merely have a difference of opinion. However, if one desires a Ferrari, that is their business. It only becomesmy business if one arbitrarily decide that I have an obligation to buy itfor them on the grounds that its a need and that they are, therefore, entitled to it. One has no moral right to force me to help them acquire

it just because they happen to want it. Western cultures accept thebelief that every individual has a right to an education, a right to agood job, a right to a living wage, a right to decent housing, aright to good healthcare, a right to virtually anything that a personcan establish as societys obligation to him. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are the foundation of society. They are non negotiable. Healthcare and education should be free at the point of entry becauseworkers fund them through their taxes. Those who work with pride and deliver services are entitled to a livingwage that will allow them to afford decent housing. It is not a gift buta just reward. We are witnessing an unprecedented attack on the working class andthere are politicians who claim that force and fraud are easily justified onthe grounds that such measures are necessary to make certain thatpeoples rights are not violated, i.e., to make certain their individualdesires are fulfilled. They say that, in order to fulfill the perceived rightsof one person, another persons right to their liberty is violated, becauseany product or service that an individual may desire must be producedby someone else. They clamour against artificial rights to give undeserving people whatthey wants in life and claim that, on the contrary, one can get everythingone wants, easier, faster, and in far greater abundance, without usinggovernment force to make others give it to you. They attack the benefit culture and repeat ad nauseam and withoutproof that the populace scrounges off the state. They put into practiceAdolf Hitlers mantra: Make the lie big, make it simple, keep sayingit, and eventually they will believe it.The state is us. They are vultures who feed on the state. They willgrovel on your doorstep before elections and treat you with contemptafter they are in power. Unfortunately, many are gullible and swallow the lies they are fed andregurgitate them, at least until they are hit by one measure or the other.By then it is too late to find a remedy. The Bedroom Tax embodies the attack on the working class more than

any other measure concocted by an incompetent and arrogantgovernment. The Tories and their lackeys want us to believe that tenantsin Council Estates drain the public purse, that they live on benefits aloneas they do not work and sleep late into the morning whilst bankerscommute to work at dawn.It would be perfectly acceptable for tenants to downsize. I know manywho would be happy with a one-bedroom flat. Unfortunately very fewsuch properties are available and people have no real prospect ofmoving. They cannot afford to enter the private rental market withspiralling rent increases and should not be shunted up Northin a crudeand populist cash cutting exercise. Ethnic and social cleansing hasalways been in the Conservative DNA. Dame Shirley Porter refers. The Bedroom Tax is not the same as the thoughtful reforms introducedin the Local Housing Allowance system, in a way that respected andprotected tenants.

I was flabbergastedwhen, recently, Icame across thedespicable graphicon the left where theLibDems accusedformer Labour

Housing Minister Malcolm Wicks of planning to introduce a BedroomTax as long ago as 2001. Malcolm used the word under occupationfor a pilot scheme that would offer financial incentives to people torelocate to smaller and more appropriate properties. He was a man ofhonour and competence who worked sensitively with older peoplewhose homes were no longer appropriate for their needs, but to whichthey were often deeply attached. The Bedroom Tax is a one of the most damaging and divisive policy todate. It will be revised soon because the Government has alreadyembarked on another crusade of hatred against hords of EasternEuropean ready to climb the white cliffs of Dover to pillage the UK.How long before people come to their senses and remove unethicalpoliticians who think they are they can bend the law any which waythey please to protect their financial interests? • FoodbanksIn the House of Commons, on 18 December2013, MPs held a critical debate on the riseof food bank use and the increase in hungerlevels in the UK today. The Labour Party used Opposition Day todiscuss the food bank petition that JackMonroe launched with the Daily Mirror andUnite the Union: it gained an astonishing100,000 signatures in just two days,

demonstrating an overwhelming strength of public feeling.

Tory and LibDem MPs banded together to defeat Labours motion, calling on the Government to reduce dependency on food banks,by 294 votes to 251, a majority of 43.

Croydon MPs, Gavin Barwell and Richard Ottaway were part of thatmajority. Shame.

Work and Pensions Secretary Iain DuncanSmith had already ducked questions in theCommons by choosing not to speak, instead putting forward his deputy EstherMcVey. In an ill-judged speech, she said:

It is positive that people are reaching out to support otherpeople.... In the UK it is right that more people are going to foodbanks because as times are tough, we are all having to pay backthis 1.5trillion debt personally. We are all trying to live within ourmeans, change the gear and make sure that we pay back all ourdebt. Shame.

The reader who could not follow the debate live, can hear it onhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/democracylive/house-of-commons-25431723

It is a circus of shouting and jeering people who forget they were electedto serve. The public pays for their food, their second homes, light bulbsand crisps. They are still fiddling their expenses. Shame.

After one hour, the Governments side looked depleted. IDS scuttled outafter one hour, 2 minutes and 13 seconds. Shame.

The Trussell Trust, the UKs largest network of food banks, now opens new food banks in Britainevery week to cope with the increase in referrals. The Government commissioned a report into the rise in food bank use in Junethis year. DEFRA investigated, and the Government are refusing to publish thereport. Some people who are in full time work are using food banks to supportthemselves and their families. Many of these work zero hour contracts peopleare employed, but can work little or no hours in a week. They have no financialstability, and are not guaranteed enough to pay their rent, bills, or buy food.Figures from the Trussell Trust show that changes to the benefit system are themost common cause for food bank use in Britain. Nearly a third had been referredafter benefits had been delayed, and a further 19% due to their benefits beingcut or stopped.Food banks dont just hand out emergency food, they also provide otheressentials such as nappies, formula milk and sanitary towels.Food banks do not encourage a cycle of dependency. Molly Hodson from theTrussell Trust says: Our food banks are different to American and Canadian foodbanks, they are an emergency service. Where there is a welfare provision, nobodyshould be at a point where they cant put food on the table long term. We helppeople out of poverty by working with local agencies and charities for example ifsomeone has debt problems, we put them in touch with a debt counselling charity. We want to help resolve the issues, and make sure people have a route out ofpoverty.

Thousands of families face the prospect of relying on emergency food handoutsthis Christmas. Shame.

TurmericHerbs and spices, which should beunprocessed and organic, enhanceand optimise our food. One amazing benefit of these herbs isthat they are very low in calories, whilebeing dense in vitamins and minerals.

They are also thermogenic, which meansthat they naturally support our metabolism

that consuming certain herbs and spices before each meal canpotentially reduce our caloric intake.Due to their nutrient-dense status, herbs promote our overall well-being with antioxidants more potent than many fruits and vegetables.Synthetically processed herbs and spices are a waste of our moneyand health. We select and consume unprocessed organic foods andshould do the same with herbs and spices. If the herb or spice we are looking for is processed or not organicallygrown, we miss out on their most potent active ingredients, whichprovide us with optimal benefits. The ancient Polynesians carried turmeric with them on their incrediblevoyage across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii. Today, Hawaiians still usethis spice, which they call Olena. While in China, Marco Polo in 1280 AD recorded information onturmeric in his diary: There is also a vegetable which has all theproperties of true saffron, as well the smell and the color, and yet it isnot really saffron. So, turmeric has been used as a substitute for saffron (an old worldspice) in Europe for over 700 years. One of the main healthful ingredients in turmeric is curcumin, whichgives turmeric its yellow color. Western scientists first isolated thecurcumin molecule in 1815, obtained its crystalline form in 1870, anddetermined its overall structure in 1910.Curcumin can potentially benefit you by: Promoting your immune system Helping you maintain your healthy digestive system Supporting your healthy bones, joints, and overall skeletal system Helping you maintain cholesterol levels that are already within thenormal range

Beware of products with questionable ingredients like fillers, additives, and excipients. An excipient is a substance added to the supplementas a processing or stability aid. One ingredient, magnesium stearate(also known as stearic acid), is a potentially toxic metal additive frompill production. Another ingredient in many turmeric supplements,Dibasic Calcium Phosphate (DCP), may even inhibit the absorption ofessential minerals within your system.

How to use fresh turmeric Fresh turmeric roots are soldin oriental markets. Whenpurchasing fresh ambahaldi, make sure it is firm, smooth and free of mould. Itis generally available in twoforms, either young ormature. Fresh turmeric ispleasantly mild and does nothave a sharp bite. On theother hand, it has a very

loud color - deeply orange inside an orange-tinged beige-brown skin.Turmeric is much smaller than ginger and has a distinct flavor, verypleasing, though delicate. Another variety, known by some as whiteturmeric, is consumed by Southeast Asians and is available from someof their markets during late spring and summer. Its flesh is a lightercolor than common turmeric; its flavor, however, is not as subtle, andsome roots can be quite pungent. Southeast Asian cultures not onlycook with this turmeric but eat the young roots raw or blanched, dipped in spicy sauces. Peel the fresh turmeric gently with a peeler. Cut off both the ends andplace it upright. Cut it into half from the centre. Cut the half portion intoanother half and remove the seeds from centre. Chop by cutting themin small pieces approximately inch in diameter. Remember to chopgently without applying much pressure. Hands get stained yellow veryeasily: take care while chopping and use gloves. You can add sliced turmeric to a number of foods from salads to riceor soups and juices. Marzia

Not like thedays of film when, because of the cost, one tried to make everyexposure count make every one a good one.Now we come to the New Year resolution. With the attractiveoutdoor scenes which winter provides us with, I suggest that yourresolution be to exercise the discipline of making every shot count not that the cost is affected but because it makes you analyse, weigh up and review the situation before pressing the button. Thisway you put to one side the emotional impact of a view and youtest the effect from different viewpoints and different levelsincluding or excluding certain features. What do you want tocapture ? READINGGROUPFOR ADULTS

The group will discuss Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier on Thursday16 December from 6 to 7pm.

It is a stunning story, compassionately reimagined. In real life Chevalier's heroine, MaryAnning, was the greatest fossil-hunter ever. Her father was a not-very-successfulcabinet-maker whom Jane Austen once asked to mend a chest, but his estimate wastoo high. Austen looked elsewhere, never knowing that the artisan she briefly met wasteaching his gifted daughter to find the "curies", the fossil curiosities sold to Lymetourists like herself. As a young child, Mary survived a lightning strike, which people said made her strangeand extra bright. She had an uncanny gift for finding fossils, was the origin of thetongue-twister "She Sells Sea Shells on the Sea Shore", and in 1811 when she was 12(Darwin was two) her first big find, a "crocodile" later named ichthyosaurus, rockedthe scientific world. She unearthed a plesiosaurus in 1823, a pterodactyl in 1828 anda squaloraja (a transition fish, between sharks and rays) in 1829.Scientists were knocking at Mary's impoverished family's door from 1811. Even beforeRichard Owen coined the word dinosaur, "terrible lizard", in 1824, giant fossils were ahot scientific topic. Several male scientists owed their achievements to Mary's finds. Shetaught herself geology and anatomy and worked out, with the Oxford geologist WilliamBuckland, that lumps known as bezoar stones were actually dinosaur faeces. To raisemoney for Mary, one patron, Colonel Birch, auctioned the fossils she helped him find.Later the French scientist Cuvier accused Mary of fraud, a charge she successfullyrebutted. She died unmarried at 47, with the respect of the international scientificcommunity.Chevalier, however, has two heroines, two voices. Mary is the young one, theuneducated girl with lightning in her bones, who reacts to everything by instinct. It isthe older woman whose voice dominates the novel. Elizabeth Philpot was also ahistorical character and her situation at the start of Chevalier's novel is familiar fromAusten: that of a middle-class spinster sent away by a married brother to live morecheaply elsewhere. STOP the Monsanto frankenseed factoryDear friends,Monsanto's extending its power over the globe, with a massivenew frankenseed factory in Argentina. Sofa Gatica and localneighbours have spoken out, and she has received deaththreats and a brutal beating. The threat is urgent: let's standwith them and stop the plant.Monsanto manufactures the genetically modified seeds that, when combined with toxic pesticides, create the devastating'monocultures' - where nothing grows but a single plant - thatincreasingly cover our planet. Now they plan to build one of theworld's largest GM seed factories in Malvinas.Sofa, worried about health risks from the plant, has joined theprotests, backed by nearly 70% of the area's residents. If 1million of us join the people of Malvinas in the next 3 days, wecan raise the profile of the issue in local media, feature thepetition in an ad campaign, and push the unpopular ArgentinePresident to shut down the plant and roll back the spread ofMonsanto's toxic agriculture.Sofia and the people of Malvinas have been lying in front ofbulldozers to block the construction of the plant. If we canamplify their protest, we can help them win. President Kirchner is facing a wave of unpopularity right now,and she can't afford to be seen to be choosing Monsanto'sprofits over her own people. The mega-plant will use toxic chemicals to engineer seeds, which sounds weird because seeds are supposed to come fromplants right? Not in Monsanto's scary new world, where plants aregenetically designed to be sterile, and the only way farmers cankeep planting food is by buying seeds every year fromMonsanto! In the US, up to 90% of some types of crops are

planted with Monsanto seeds, and with its new mega-plant inArgentina, the infamous company is extending its power overthe globe. The threats and beating of Sofa and her fellow protesters arethe last straw. Let's stop Monsanto's invasion of South America, and start rolling back the devastation wreaked on ourecosystems by their products. Some argue that genetic modification holds great promise forincreased agricultural efficiency. There may be many suchbenefits in the future, but often the gains are hyped bycorporate PR (such as the line that GM seeds 'feed the world' bybeing far more productive than normal seeds - in fact there'slittle evidence of that), and GM technologies often put profitover people and planet. Governments should adjudicate the public risks and benefits, but Monsanto is skilled in undermining democraticgovernance. They even passed a law in the US that says that ajudge cannot order a recall of Monsanto products, even ongrounds of public safety! Our planet is being rapidly transformed by geneticallymodified, industrial agriculture, and our governments are fartoo heavily influenced by the American mega-corporation atthe center of it all -- a corporation that is gradually coming tocontrol the world's food supply. Let's not force our children and grandchildren to deal with aworld fed by Monsanto; we can stop it now.
