Is in the Air Gala Dinner!
President’s Greeting Dear Women’s Institute Sister Members,
It is an honour to serve as your Provincial President for the next two years. It will be a
challenge that I feel I am ready to meet.
At this time, I would like to welcome all current and new members to PEIWI. Please
feel free to contact me if you have any ideas, questions, or concerns.
September is here already, and another WI year has begun. Our summer has been
filled with many tasks!
At Old Home Week, the Handcrafts, Horticulture and Arts Show entries were up, and
were of the highest quality. We have many crafty and talented people on PEI. Congratulations to those who won,
and to all who participated. You should be very proud of yourselves!
We hope you are planning on attending the Fall Workshops to be held in October. It will be both educational and
fun. Hope to see you there!
Doreen Wall, President
Upcoming Fall Workshops
A variety of themes will be part of this year's Fall Workshops, including a session with John Robertson known for
his The Butler Is In segments regularly aired on CBC Radio’s Island Morning Show; PEI’s Canadian Hard of
Hearing Association with “Pardon Me? What Did You Say?”; and a food demonstration.
The evening workshops are scheduled for October 11 in Summerside, October 17 in Charlottetown, and October
19 in Montague.
Each workshop starts at 7:00 pm.
Pre-registration is required. Sign up with the WI office by October 6 to ensure your spot!
It is my pleasure to report on the FWIC!
Education is one of the Committees that I chair on the FWIC board. Education reduces poverty,
boosts economic growth and increases income. It increases a person’s chances of having a healthy
life... In sum, education is one of the most important investments a person can make.
We have come a long way towards the goal of providing equal educational opportunities for all our
children. Research has convinced experts that the greatest part of a child's mental development
takes place in their pre-school years. The home situation has an important influence on the child's
readiness for entering our school system. Mental health is a big thing right now, even in our
children.
Another one of the committees that I chair is Cultural Activities. These are jobs generally seen as
part of Canada’s artistic and cultural fields. Examples include:
Tweedsmuir Competition 2015- 2018 is well under way with spring 2018 deadline for entries.
FWIC Fundraising items are coming together, cell phone purses and PEI Preserve Co preserves are to be ready for selling before
Christmas.
In 2019, FWIC will be celebrating our 100th Anniversary. We are having a rose bush named for this important occasion, and it
will be ready for Spring 2019 just in time for planting.
PEIWI President Doreen Wall and I attended the ACWW Canada Area Conference in Pembroke, Ontario, and then on to our
FWIC AGM & Annual Board Meeting in Fort-Coulonge, Québec. Many reports were brought forward at both meetings. The
President gave a report on activities pertaining to ACWW on PEI, and presented PEIWI Past President Jacquie Laird's report for
the past year at the FWIC meeting.
A “thank you” was expressed to us for Pennies for Friendship. From August 2016 to the end of May 2017, $8,552.22 came in
from across Canada.
We will hear from our Area President Sheila Needham this Fall about the new ACWW projects, and our next FWIC meeting
will be a Skype meeting in September.
On a branch level, with the summer gone and fall approaching, it might be a good time to give our own Institute organization the
once over with a critical eye. As with a home, if it isn't well cared for and perked up from time to time, it soon becomes run
down. Just like my living room being painted, it looks wonderful, and it now looks cared for.
Renewing the mission of our organization, its objectives and goals are always a good refreshing project as well.
There are times when we feel that we are not accomplishing too much in our little corner of the world but we must remember we
are an organization similar to an ever-growing tree, which reaches out to help in countless ways.
If our small contribution helps to develop musical talent in a child, eases the burden of one with MS, or contributes towards the
cure for cancer, we shall not strive in vain.
“Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world”
- Nelson Mandela

Provincial Heritage Fair
On behalf of the Planning Committee of the PEI Provincial Heritage Fair, I would like to thank you
very much for your organization’s sponsorship of a Special Prize at the Provincial Heritage Fair
held May 4, 2017 at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. Your organization’s support contributed to
the success of this educational event.
Thank you as well for arranging for a representative to judge for your organization’s prize.
Approximately 181 students in Grades 5 through 9 from 22 schools across the province presented
141 heritage fair projects on various aspects of Canadian heritage and culture. More than 2,000
students throughout the province participated in the Heritage Fair program during the 2016-2017
school year.
The 12 finalists named during the Closing Ceremonies have been invited by the PEI Heritage Fair
Committee to participate in the national Young Citizens video contest, a program organized by
Canada’s History Society. These 12 students will create a 3-5 minute video of their Heritage Fair
project and will upload the video to YoungCitizens.ca for public viewing, voting and commenting.
Please visit the Young Citizens website to view and vote for the PEI video entries between
June 12 - July 7! Two PEI students will be selected to attend Canada's History's Youth Forum in
Ottawa in the fall.

Recruitment Tip Contest Winners
From January to May, PEIWI branches were given the opportunity to
submit recruitment tips on how to best recruit new members.
Three branches were chosen as winners, and were presented with $50
cheques at the Provincial Convention in June by Past PEIWI Awards
Chair, Cynthia Mitchell.
The branches and their winning recruitment tips are listed below in
alphabetical order:
Malpeque WI:
Personal and direct invitation with gentle persistence, to attend short
and concise WI business meetings, with beneficial and interesting
programs offered to members and the community.
Sherbrooke-Summerside WI:
Have a family/community BBQ/picnic during the summer. Deliver
flyers and phone to invite families and friends. Advertise on social
media, in the newspaper (community happenings), etc.
Also, have games and a demonstration of a craft (encourage
participation, where people can make and take home). Have display
boards highlighting information, accomplishments, projects, photos,
etc. about WI in general and your branch specifically.
Include info on how to join (contact person info and next meeting date).
The event could be held at local community centre, and the community
council (if present) could ask for a donation to offset the cost.
South Pinette-Flat River WI:
We need to broaden our community focus by considering further
collaboration with neighboring WI branches. This could include joint
meetings once or twice per year to discuss interests, concerns, and
possible joint projects. These projects could support students, seniors,
and families – they should be seen as having a real purpose and a
genuine concern for others.
Perhaps put out a newsletter (paper/social media) at least once a year to
highlight past accomplishments and upcoming events (joint projects
and branch meetings, with invitation to attend).
Communication is the key to success. This advertising will create
awareness of what WI members are doing, and in turn, attract potential
members who will find branch activities both meaningful and
worthwhile.
To attract new members, branches need to be relevant and appealing to
women of all ages.
