The most common cause of trimmerhead malfunction is poor mainte-nance, especially true for tap-for-line,bump-feed, and fully automatic heads.Customers buy these heads forconvenience so they don’t have toreach down and advance the line–yetthat added convenience often meansthe head is not properly maintained.

A Few Tips

■ Clean the head thoroughly each timeline is refilled. Wipe all grass anddebris from internal parts. Water willdissolve accumulated buildup, but acleaner such as 409™ will aid in thetask.

■ Replace worn eyelets. Never run atrimmer head without eyelets in-stalled. Running with an eyeletmissing will cause the trimmer line towear into the body of the head aswell as create excessive vibration.

■ Replace any noticeably worn parts. Aknob at the bottom of a head is awear part if it contacts the ground, especially in abrasive soil conditionsand when the head is run againstsidewalks and curbs.

■ When winding line, keep both stringsseparate. Try to wind as evenly aspossible to prevent snarling andreduce vibration.

■ Trim line ends to equal length fromthe eyelet. Operation with unevenlength trimmer line will causeexcessive vibration.

■ Always replace worn or damagedparts promptly.

■ Make sure line is wound in thecorrect direction for the rotation ofthe head–For heads with a LH arbor bolt, wind line counterclockwise as viewedfrom the knob at the end of thetrimmer head. For heads with a RH arbor bolt, wind line clockwise as viewed fromthe knob.

“Clockwise for RH,Counterclockwise for LH”

Any plastic material can dry out, especially when stored at high tem-perature and when exposed to directsunlight. To prevent this, Shindaiwapackages much of their trimmer line inall-plastic holders so the line can besoaked in water to restore moisture.

Trimmer line with very low moisturecontent is brittle and inflexible. Wind-ing dry line on a trimmer head can bevery difficult. After soaking in water, the same line will become very flexibleand far tougher, and service life willbe significantly extended. NOTE: Thisalso applies to flail blades.

CAUTION: Remove the bearing orbushing from from Super Flail bladesbefore soaking in water.

The Shindaiwa WarrantyShindaiwa warrants trimmer heads tobe free of defects in materials andworkmanship for 90 days. The war-ranty is for replacement parts only –not the entire trimmer head. Damagecaused by wear, running with missingparts, etc. is not covered.

Question: Why does Shindaiwacarry so many trimmer heads?

Answer: There are different headsfor different applications. Some headsfeature manual adjustment of linelength while others are tap-for-linemodels. In addition, some trimmerheads are intended for consumer useand others are intended primarily forcommercial applications.
