1. Slide the ignition switch to the “I”position (engine ON).

3. Press the primer bulb until fuel canbe seen flowing in the transparentreturn tube.

IMPORTANT!

Engine ignition is controlled by a two position switch mounted on the throttlehousing labeled, "I" for ON or START and "O" for OFF or STOP.

IMPORTANT!The primer system only pushes fuelthrough the carburetor. Repeatedlypressing the primer bulb will not floodthe engine with fuel.

4. (Cold Engine Only) Set the chokelever to the CLOSED position.

CAUTION!

■ Do not remove the conrodsfrom the cutters. Conrodbearings can be lost ordamaged if disturbed.

■ Over-lubricating may causethe gearcase to run slowerthan normal, and may alsocause leakage from excessgrease.

Top off gearcase grease level by usinga lever-type grease gun to force 1–2strokes of high quality lithium-basedgrease through the gearcase greasefitting.

When the engine starts or fires–

1. Open the choke by moving thechoke lever backward (toward thefuel tank).

2. If the engine did not continue torun, repeat the appropriate crank-ing procedures for a cold or warmengine.

3. When the engine starts, clearexcess fuel from the combustionchamber by accelerating the engineseveral times with the throttlelever.

WARNING!

The cutting attachment willoscillate when the engineaccelerates!

4. Operating the throttle will automati-cally disengage the fast idle setting.

If the engine does not start–■ Repeat the appropriate starting

procedure for a cold or warmengine.

■ If the engine still fails to start, usethe procedures for “Starting aflooded engine,” on the next page.

5. Place the unit on the ground. Gripthe engine cover with your lefthand and the starter handle withyour right hand (shown).

6. Pull the starter handle slowlytoward you until you feel the startermechanism engage.

7. Start the trimmer by pulling thestarting handle rapidly outward.

WARNING!

Never start the engine from theoperating position.

ChokeOpen

IMPORTANT!If the engine fails to start afterseveral attempts with the choke inthe closed position, the engine maybe flooded with fuel. If flooding issuspected, move the choke lever tothe open position and repeatedly pullthe recoil starter to remove excessfuel and start the engine. If theengine still fails to start, refer to thenext page "Starting a FloodedEngine".

CAUTION!

Do not pull the recoil starter to theend of the rope travel. Pulling therecoil starter to the end of the ropetravel can damage the starter.

Daily Maintenance/Inspection

1. Remove all grass clippings and dirtfrom the hedge trimmer.

■ Remove any compacted debrisfrom around the fuel tank and/ormuffler.

■ Inspect the engine cooling finsfor clogging, and clean as neces-sary.

■ Clean beneath the cylindercover and around the spark plug.

■ Inspect the air filter element forclogging, clean as necessary.

2. Check for loose, damaged, ormissing components, and repair asnecessary.

3. Lubricate the cutters with oil beforeuse, and after refueling.

4. Check the cutters for damage orimproper adjustment, and adjust orreplace as necessary.

The engine must return to idle speedwhenever the throttle lever is re-leased. Idle speed is adjustable, andmust be set low enough to permit theengine clutch to disengage thecutters.

Adjusting Engine Idle

Idle Speed Adjustment1. Start the engine, and then allow it

to idle 2–3 minutes until warm.

2. If the cutters move when theengine is at idle, reduce idle speedby turning the idle adjustmentscrew counterclockwise.

3. If a tachometer is available, theengine idle speed should be final-adjusted to3,000 (±250) rpm (min-1).

4. Carburetor fuel mixture adjust-ments are preset at the factory andcannot be serviced in the field.

WARNING!

The cutters must NEVER engageat engine idle speeds! If the idlespeed cannot be adjusted by theabove procedure, return thetrimmer to your Shindaiwa dealerfor inspection.

1. Cool the engine by allowing it toidle for 2–3 minutes.

2. Move the ignition switch to the “O”or STOP position.

Operation■ Squeezing the throttle increases

engine speed, causing the clutch toengage and operate the cutters.

■ Releasing the throttle decreasesengine speed, causing the cuttersto slow, and then stop altogether asthe clutch disengages.

■ Use a sweeping motion whencutting, and vary throttle settingsoften.

■ Avoid cutting material larger than1/2 inch in diameter.
