VISION STATEMENTThe Foundation’s vision is to be the charitable arm that extends SHFM’s workplace hospitality impact from the industry into the community.

MISSIONThe Foundation enhances SHFM’s external presence through corporate foodservice and workplace hospitality career preparation and education support, industry and student networking, and community-based charitable efforts.

The mission of the SHFM Foundation is to provide opportunities and support in the form of scholarships and internships for the next generation of corporate foodservice and hospitality leaders.

FOUNDATION OVERVIEWThe SHFM Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports higher education through scholarships and student outreach programs. The Foundation is committed to the continued growth of our vital industry, which drives productivity and morale for millions of American workers every day. The Foundation offers scholarships to students who have gained acceptance to a full-time restaurant/foodservice or hospitality-related post-secondary program.

HISTORY OF THE SHFM FOUNDATIONThe SHFM Foundation grew out of an active SHFM Committee, the School-to-Career Committee. Through the energies of committee members and SHFM leaders, like Rudiger Flik, FLIK Hospitality Group founder, the SHFM Foundation was chartered in October 2006. Over the years, the Foundation has provided scholarships to college and high school students, funding to colleges and universities, and internships to high school students. Each program is designed to ensure that students gain education and on-the-job experience in the corporate foodservice and workplace hospitality industry.

$550,000Since the inception of the School-to-Career Committee, the Foundation has given $550,000 to deserving students to pave the way for a successful career in the hospitality and foodservice industry.

FOUNDATION AT WORK

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS As part of our commitment to the industry, the SHFM Foundation has established a scholarship program to support students in Hospitality and Foodservice Management Programs at accredited Colleges and Universities.

The SHFM Foundation Scholarship Program is offered to students entering their junior or senior year of college. These scholarships target students enrolled in Hospitality/Foodservice Management programs in schools across the country who are seeking careers in Corporate Foodservice Management, Hospitality Management and Conference or Event Planning.

In 2015, the Foundation awarded six $2,500 scholarships to very deserving students plus three additional scholarships at the Scholarship Showdown.

“ The Society for Hospitality and Foodservice Management Foundation Scholarship helped me exponentially in my studies at Ferris State University. I was able to use the scholarship for tuition and other college expenses such as books and other supplies for school. I’m positive when I graduate that having received this scholarship will put me on a much better playing field. At this point in my college career, I am trying to figure out the best ways I can keep my debt as low as possible and with the generosity of the Foundation it is helping keep me more financially stable. I am extremely enthusiastic about my future in the hospitality industry to see where I am able to go and what possibilities are out there for me. I’d like to thank the SHFM Foundation once again for the generous contribution to my education. Trust me, it has helped make a world of difference.”

SHFM SCHOLARSHIP SHOWDOWN AT THE SHFM NATIONAL CONFERENCEWhile only in its second year, the SHFM Scholarship Showdown has already become a mainstay of the SHFM National Conference. Student competitors from regional culinary schools in and around our conference host city are nominated to compete by each of their institutions. And in 2015, the event provided a mentoring opportunity for each student, as they worked with our corporate chefs during a New Orleans gumbo competition. Each student prepared their version of gumbo for attendees to sample; then conference attendees voted for the one they liked best. The Foundation surprised all competitors by awarding each one with a scholarship. Our winner, Jerod Goudy, still a high school student, walked away with a $5,000 scholarship, and his fellow competitors received $3,000 and $2,000 respectively.

“ I am completely overjoyed to have received this wonderful scholarship from the Society of Hospitality and Foodservice Management Foundation! Thank you so much for taking the time to review my application and to recognize my passion for the hospitality and foodservice industry!”

STUDENT DAY AT THE SHFM NATIONAL CONFERENCEAlso in its second year, our Student Day program at the SHFM Conference is a well-attended event. This program allows regional students from culinary and hospitality programs in the conference host city to attend one day of the conference. This experience provides them with the opportunity to participate in a special morning session designed for them, in which industry professionals share their career experiences and learning. From there, the students are able to attend full conference sessions and are given the opportunity to network with conference attendees. The students then round out their day with a back-of-the-house tour of the conference hotel’s culinary facilities.

“ The networking and educational opportunities were once in a lifetime, and I received numerous emails from students thanking us for accompanying them to your conference.” Kim Williams, Ph.D., Interim Director, Lester E. Kabacoff School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism, University of New Orleans

COURSE FUNDINGThe Foundation programs impact students in myriad ways. In addition to scholarships, competitions, and other experiential opportunities, our support of the industry includes funding college level courses that teach future foodservice and hospitality managers about the corporate (Managed Services) segment. Course funding was awarded in 2015 to the following institutions:

Florida International University

Johnson & Wales University – Providence

University of Houston, Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management

University of Massachusetts, Amherst

Washington State University

Widener University

INTERNSHIPSWorking with C-CAP, the Careers through Culinary Arts Program, the Foundation placed 15 high school students in a 2015 summer internship program. These students were able to experience work in an on-site operation for a six-week period and gained first-hand knowledge of the industry through our Internship Program. Hopefully, these experiences will lead them to both college studies in our industry and a college course funded by the Foundation.

NETWORKING

$122,000

The SHFM Foundation raises funds through a number of networking events and fundraising activities. These events help fulfill the networking component of our strategic plan, while supporting the work of the Foundation. In 2015, our networking and fundraising efforts included the annual golf tournament, a new Bourbon tasting event, and our annual silent auction at the national conference. In addition to these activities, the Foundation conducts raffles at various SHFM events throughout the year to raise additional funds. In 2015, we raised $122,000 to support the work of the Foundation and positively impacted 600 students.

HENNESSY MILITARY TRAVELER PROGRAM

Established in 1957, the Hennessy Awards have become the oldest and most highly coveted military foodservice awards. Each year, a member of SHFM is selected to evaluate the foodservice and hospitality at U.S. military bases around the world. This unique opportunity allows an SHFM member to be involved in educating the men and women serving in the U.S. Air Force’s hospitality services. Over the past two years, $16,850 has been provided to support this important and long-time service program.

Our 2015 Traveler was SHFM Past President Jim Wulforst.
