Zhang Qian [email protected] THE Shenzhen Consumer Coun- cil said Tuesday that it has been working with two district-level consumer councils in Futian and Longgang to send the informa- tion of four companies that had infringed on consumers’ rights to credit institutions. All four companies had severely infringed on consum- ers’ rights, said staff members with the consumer councils that had an array of evidence of the complaints received against these companies over the past few months on display at a media conference Tuesday. The four blacklisted companies had defrauded their customers mainly with tricks like Internet rebates and prepaid consump- tion. It is the second time that the Shenzhen Consumer Coun- cil has combated fraudulent companies by blacklisting them on credit institutions on behalf of consumers. Among the four companies, one online e-commerce company based in Shenzhen had scammed customers out of a total of 2.43 million yuan (US$366,444). The city’s consumer council received six complaints against the com- pany recently. According to customers, the e-commerce company promised to return rebates to them if they purchase petrol cards on its app. However, the e-commerce com- pany shut down the function for withdrawing points their custom- ers accumulated by purchasing petrol cards on the portal. On behalf of the customers that lodged complaints against the company, the Shenzhen Consumer Council attempted to mediate the conflicts, but failed to reach the company. It was also found that the company had can- celed the tenancy contract with the landlord of its office and moved out of the building. However, the company con- tinued to sell petrol cards, even during the council’s inspection, causing economic losses to more customers. The other three companies being blacklisted are a photogra- phy cultural firm, a fitness gym and a piano training center. All of the companies were reported for having caused economic losses to customers by requiring pre- payment for consumption and shutting down the business and ceasing to provide the services. All of the business owners refused to cooperate with the council to compensate the cus- tomers and attempted to avoid accusations. The council has already sent over 10 firms’ information to both public and privately owned credit institutions including the Shenzhen Public Credit Center and Pengyuan Credit Service Co. Ltd. Four businesses blacklisted for scams SHENZHEN Chronic Disease Control and Prevention Center will implement an expanded intervention program at 97 pri- mary schools to prevent obesity among children through healthy nutrition, according to a Nanfang Daily report Wednesday. At a training program hosted by the center Tuesday on children’s diet and nutrition, the center said children’s awareness of the impor- tance of having healthy foods and avoiding eating snacks had risen since the program was first introduced among nearly 10,000 students in 39 primary schools in the 2016 school year. A survey conducted by Shen- zhen’s health commission and the education bureau over 3,748 students and 3,480 parents showed that 43 percent of the students often ate potato chips as snacks. After the program was implemented, the number dropped to 31 percent. The number of students who ate fruit jelly and drank carbon- ated drinks also dropped by 9 percent and 17 percent, respec- tively, after the intervention pro- gram. More students replaced those drinks with water. The survey showed more students have started to look at the nutrient labels on snack cans before they purchase the snacks, and they care more about the production dates. Statistics from Shenzhen Center for Disease Prevention and Control showed that 14.2 percent of students in primary and middle schools were suf- fering from obesity in the 2015 school year, 0.53 percent higher than the previous school year. (Han Ximin) Dietary program to reduce obesity A SHENZHEN-based dairy com- pany, Chenguang Dairy, lodged a lawsuit against Wensdi, a dairy firm in Zhaoqing, accusing the Zhaoqing company of infring- ing on its trademark slogan that indicates its dairy products supply Hong Kong residents. The Guangzhou Tianhe People’s Court has accepted Chenguang Dairy’s indictment and the case will be heard in Guangzhou soon. Conflicts between the two dairy firms date back to the second half of 2016 when Chen- guang Dairy found that most of the dairy products produced by Wensdi had signs on packages that indicated that the products are also available in Hong Kong, which means the quality of the products are guaranteed to meet Hong Kong’s standards. Chenguang Dairy said that it had been using the phrase, “Supplying to Hong Kong,” to promote its products for many years, and the signs used by Wensdi would confuse consum- ers into thinking Wensdi prod- ucts are from Chenguang. According to the Shenzhen dairy company, the national trade office officially approved two sets of phrases as Chenguang Dairy’s trademarks March 28, 2016, which will remain valid for 20 years. The two firms attempted to resolve the problem through negotiation, but the talks ended when Wensdi appealed to the national trademark office to invalidate the two trademarks registered by Chenguang Dairy. Chenguang Dairy urged Wensdi to stop the infringement and to offer compensation for its loss. But the Zhaoqing company justified its actions as legal com- mercial behavior rather than infringement. Chenguang Dairy demanded the Zhaoqing company cease using similar trademarks, but Wensdi did not respond, lead- ing the Shenzhen company to file a lawsuit.
