General park information

The park is generally open from 8 a.m. to dusk, 365 days a year, but may be closed for special events.The park is 1619 acres with

5.6 miles of river frontage along the South fork of the Shenandoah River.There are 24 miles of trails,

seven of which are multi-use.The park is located off of

Rt. 340, eight miles south of Front Royal and 15 miles north of Luray.The park is a trash-free fa-

cility. The only refuse collec-tion area is at Culler’s Over-look.The Visitor Center is open

from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., 365 days a year.

A park ranger is always on duty. If a park ranger is needed after the Visitor Cen-ter has closed, call the Rang-er on Duty number which is posted around the park.Cell phone coverage in the

park is very limited.WIFI can be accessed from

the deck at the Visitor Center and in front of the building.The park is pet friendly. Pets

must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet.Do not bring your own fire-

wood to the park. Firewood is sold for $4.

Spring and summer at the park offer great opportunity to observe nature at the height of its activity. Beginning in late February, if you take a stroll down the Cottonwood Boardwalk in the early evening, you can hear the thundering chorus of Spring Peeper frogs announcing the coming season. March and April are a wonderful time to observe the vernal pools alongside this trail, which are full of amphibian egg masses and hatch-

ing tadpoles. You might even catch a glimpse of the large Spotted S a l a m a n d e r, who returns to the same pool year after year to mate and lay her eggs. Numer-ous wildflowers begin blooming here as well, in-cluding Spring B e a u t y, Tw i n Leaf, Bloodroot and Dutchmen’s

Breeches. Be sure to stop by the visitor center and pick up an illus-trated guide of these flowers to take along with you on your walk. Depending on weather condi-tions, sometime between March and May you can observe the beautiful dark red flowers bloom-ing on the Pawpaw trees along the Bluebell Trail. These flowers look similar to small, downward facing roses. Later on in the season you will see the bright green, edible fruit growing on the trees, which usually ripen enough to taste in early September. An easy way

to spot this tree is to observe the colorful Zebra Swallowtail butterfly, which uses the trees as its host plant. Females lay their green eggs on the leaves, the caterpillars munch on them and the adults drink nectar from the flowers. Another not-to-miss event on this trail is the blooming of the magnificent Bluebells, which usually occurs mid to late April, again depending on the weather. In June, the river becomes warm enough to enter and explore. The canal that empties out at the main canoe launch is a nice, shallow place for children to wade, as is the Fish Trap area behind shelter 3. Interesting things to see include crayfish, clams, minnows and tur-tles. Overturn a rock on the river bottom and you will find a variety of macroinvertebrates, including hellgrammites, water pennies and damselfly nymphs. Adult damsel-flies, often a brilliant green or blue in color, can be seen flying over the river and perching on rocks. They can be distinguished from the sim-ilar-looking dragonfly by their long, thin bodies. Additionally, when damselflies sit, they keep their wings closed rather than open,

unlike their dragonfly cousins. Finally, a walk along the Culler’s or River trails in spring or summer offers you the opportunity to ob-serve a variety of birds. Wooden bird boxes house Bluebirds, Chick-adees and Tree Swallows. The gorgeous Red-winged blackbird is often heard before it is seen, nesting in trees alongside the river. Red-tailed hawks, Osprey and Bald Eagles are often sighted in this floodplain area as well. And if you venture down one of the paths to the river, you are likely to see Great Blue Heron and the smaller Green Heron, fishing for their breakfasts. Of course, every season at the

park has amazing things to view. I would be negligent if I didn’t mention the famous fall colors that the Shenandoah Valley is known for. The brilliant reds, oranges and yellows of the maples, oaks and black gums are a must-see. Win-tertime offers wonderful views of the river on many trails, previously impossible due to the thick foliage. And if you are staying in the cabins this time of year, you just might hear the peep of the Northern Saw-whet owl in the evening, who migrates to the area from Canada for the winter.

When you visit Shenandoah River State Park you will likely enjoy one or more of our hiking trails - 26 miles of beautiful easy walks to moderately difficult hikes. You will spend the time looking for plants and wildlife, especially the many birds. Have you ever wondered what the birds see when they watch you hiking their park? You now have a chance to find out. You can get a view of the park and surrounding mountains from up in the trees. You can just about fly from tree to tree. Virginia Canopy Tours ™ will take you to the top of Allen Mountain and, except for two short nature hikes, return you to the bottom without your feet touching the ground. I had a

chance to do the treetop tour in late April. It was a blast! Our two guides, Tabby and Ben, outfitted us, gave us safety instruction and an idea what to expect, and then it was a ride up the mountain. Coming down was pure plea-sure. There are eight zip lines - including one 1035 feet long with speed estimated up to 40 mph - two rope bridges and a final rappel. Tabby and Ben handled all the technical stuff and we all felt completely safe. This is a chance to do some-thing most people never get a chance to try - and what could be better than having lots of fun while you are doing it? Narrative from log: We hold the distinction of having the smallest RV that a camps host has been known to possess; this is a 17’ Casita white fiber-glass travel trailer. We call her the Travelling Egg. Our home port is New Bern, NC, located on the Atlantic coast at the tidal headwaters of the Neuse River. Our address is Possum Trot 1770, for it lies at the in-tersection of US17 & 70. 2013 was our second fall season as Camp Hosts at Shenandoah River State Park. The Park is of relatively new construction, well planned from both an infrastructure and visual stand-

point. The Park personnel are friendly, welcoming and helpful in every regard. We set up our site and commenced our duties. The week of 1 October was the beginning of the Federal Government Shutdown. This had a dramatic effect on our operations in light of the fact that nearby Shenandoah Na-tional Park and its thoroughfare, Skyline Drive, and all of the National Forest campgrounds were closed. Campers de-scended on the Park, having come from all points of the compass, and every continent save Antarctica. For the better part of two weeks the situation of many visitors and little to no availability persisted. The staff

and volunteers rose to the oc-casion with above average tact and creativity during a rather stressful time. As a whole, the campers were good natured in light of the circumstances revolving about the cancellation of all reservations for campsites on Federal lands. The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, the largest of the bunch, came to the Park for their fall hike, as they were locked out of access to the A.T. Those from foreign countries, most of whom had arranged their RV rentals and sites far in advance, were of a particularly amused humor, not a little sarcasm withstanding. This all made for some inter-

esting fireside chats and not a few lessons in international diplomacy. The Fall Foliage which everyone had come out for was thoroughly disobedient of the predictions put forth by all the news outlets. A warm rainy spell set in at the time of the called-for peak that lasted the better part of five days, totaling six inches. The camp-ers, regardless of equipment, remained upbeat, a rainy day in the Blue Ridge being superior to a sunny one at the office. The colors seemed suspended in their transition until things dried out and a strong cold front came through bringing subzero temps on or about the 20th. A volunteer brigade of arborists had a field day planting over two-hundred trees; oaks, river birch and sycamore. These were planted for shoreline stabilization, wildlife enhance-ment and aesthetics along the beautiful winding banks of the Shenandoah River in Culler’s Bottom. As there was a small surplus of trees, the balance was healed in at points within the campground. Our time was finished out by helping the maintenance staff with cleaning and organization of the firewood shed and its equip-ment in anticipation of the fast

approaching winter. The colors reached what we considered their peak during the third and fourth week of October. They were, as usual, very pretty. The delay perhaps enhanced their glory. At the conclusion of our stay we said our farewells to our friends working at the Park. Having lived in close proximity to one of the CCC-built Virginia State Parks in the past, and being a visitor to many other

state and national parks, we can say without reservation that Raymond R. ‘Andy’ Guest, Jr. Shenandoah River State Park upholds the worthy vision of those who wish to balance conservation, preservation and resource management with safe public access to our nation’s natural heritage.

Learning is Fun in the Park


National parks are great places for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy some of their favorite activities. Many such parks allow visitors to camp out after a day spent rafting or kayaking on the water, making these locales the ideal vacation spots for families or groups of friends who share a love of the great outdoors.Hiking is among the more popular

activities enjoyed at parks across the globe. Hikers of all ages and skill levels can enjoy trails of varying de-grees of difficulty, all the while taking in picturesque landscapes that often cannot be found in developed urban and suburban areas. But as much as hiking can be

enjoyed even by novice outdoor enthusiasts, this rewarding activity also can be dangerous. Hikers often find themselves in remote locations where cellular phone signals tend to be weak, which can be troublesome, even when hiking in relatively crowd-ed parks. That’s why it’s important to take the following precautionary measures when hiking.* Never hike alone. Many outdoor

enthusiasts enjoy escaping from the daily grind and getting some alone time with Mother Nature. While some outdoor activities can be safely en-joyed alone, others, including hiking, should never be done without a friend in tow. There are numerous benefits to hiking in pairs or groups, not the least of which is having someone there to go for help should anyone suffer an injury on the trails. When hiking with a group or even with only a friend, make sure no one hikes faster than the slowest hiker. This ensures that no one will get lost and that each hiker has someone there to seek help should an accident or injury occur.* Share your itinerary with someone

staying behind. Even if you are hiking with others, it’s best to share your itinerary with someone who is not joining you on your trip. This way someone can alert authorities to you, and your fellow hikers’ direction if you get lost on a trail and cannot find your way out. When sharing your itinerary, share your schedule as well, telling friends who are staying behind to alert the authorities if you do not return or make direct contact with them by a given time.* Start early. Embarking on a hike

early is beneficial in a variety of ways. Nature is beautiful at all times of the day, but part of the joy of hiking is taking in all of the beautiful landscapes, which are easier to see during daylight hours than at night. Hiking during the day is also safer,

as it’s easier for hikers to make their way on trails when they can see where they’re going than at night, when many hiking trails are cloaked in darkness. Scavenging animals also may be more prevalent after sundown. Finally, hiking also is legal during daylight hours, whereas many parks ban hiking once the sun goes down.* Know the weather forecast. When

planning a hiking trip, know the weather forecast for the day or days you plan to hike. Expect cooler temperatures, even if the forecast is calling for a beautiful warm day. Hiking trails are often surrounded by tall trees, which makes it difficult for warm sunlight to illuminate trails and warm up hikers. So pack an extra jacket or coat, ideally a rain coat that can serve double duty should it start to rain.* Carry water and snacks. Staying
