    MARJANISHVILI THEATRE

    Kote Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre was established in Kutaisi in 1928 year andvery soon it was titled The Second State Georgian Drama Theatre. It was founded bya great theatre director and reformer of the Georgian theatre by the name of KoteMarjanishvili. Marjanishvili played a crucial role in the development of Georgian

    theatrical life, and is generally credited with navigating a path for modern Georgiantheatre. Using established Georgian theatrical traditions, Marjanishvili created amodern theatre in which antique, classical and modern drama existed harmoniously.

    It later moved to Tbilisi. During this period hestaged productions such as: Hopla, WereAlive by Ernst Toller, To the Very Heart byShalva Dadiani, Uriel Acosta by CarlGutzkow, How by Karlo Kaladze, Kvarkvare

    Tutaberi by Polikarpe Kakabadze, BeatriceCenci by Percy Shelley, Othello by William

    Shakespeare etc During the first tours of thetheatre in early thirties and after the firstdemonstration of its theatrical wealth,Marjanishvili Theatre was asked to relocate in

    Tbilisi (1930) and occupied the building of thepublic house built by the Zubalashvilibrothers. In 1933, after the death of Kote

    Marjanishvili, the theatre was named afterits founder.

    Even though the soviet system deniedGeorgian artists to represent their theatrical

    mastery abroad, Marjanishvili Theatre stillmanaged to attend different art and theatrefestivals, where critic and public alike havealways been enchanted by Georgianspassionate and innovate approach to thetheatre and to the life.

    Activity

    Theater season runs from September until the end of June. It has two - Small and Bigsstages and hosts around 45 000 audience per season, with 382 performances.

    Performances are every day, except Mondays and start at 20:00 on both stages.

    Griboedov Theatre was established in 1932, in the building of former Bank Theatre,built in XIX century, renewed in 1906-1908 y. Later, in 1970s, the building wasreconstructed and now the Theater is situated in a huge building together with theShopping Mall (currently under reconstruction) and the Metro vestibule.

    Theatre is named after Alexander Griboedov, Russian diplomat, dramatist and acomposer of 19th century.

    Theatre mainly stages performances in Russian language, based on Russian, Georgianand other foreign screenplays. Its current repertoire covers more than 25 plays.

    The Theatre is the best place for Russian speakers, since its the only place, where onecan attend performance in Russian language.     LIBERTY THEATRE (or Free theatre?)

    Liberty Theatre is a quite new theatre, established 10 years ago.Its a private theatre, owned by Avto Varsimashvili (Theatre Director).Liberty theatre has experienced some problems with the government ofShevardnadze, because of the performances having some political content related toShevardnadzes political past, but it was not finally closed.

    Liberty theatre was also the first one taking its performances to Tskhinvali breakwayregion in 2004.Theatre is known as one of the most loved theaters for youth, not only in Tbilisi, but inother cities of Georgia as well. Its actors are also known for the most popular TV-seriesin Georgia In the middle of the city and some movies.

    TBILISI STATE ACADEMIC OPERA AND BALLET THEATRE is the main Opera Theatre in

    Tbilisi, with its long history of existence. 2001 has seen the 150th jubilee of this

    Theatre.

    On the 12th April 1851 the theatre was opened with a grandiose banquet, which wasattended by the high circles of the society of Tbilisi. After several months from this

    event in one of the popular Parisian newspaper, Illustrations (issue of 25th October

    1851) wrote: This is the only theatre in the city, the interior of which is totally made in

    Moresque, is doubtlessly one of the most elegant, beautiful and fascinating theatrical

    constructions, the perception of which is possible by a human being.

    TBILISI MARIONETTE THEATRE

    The 1st Georgian Marionette Theatre was established in 1980, Tbilisi. The 1st

    performances staged in the Theatre were Alfred and Violetta and Marchal de

    Fanties Diamond, by Revaz Gabriadze, play writer. Mr. Gabriadze is still the art

    director of Marionette Theatre.

    The theatre company has successfully traveled around several countries: France, UK,

    Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Spain, USA, etc and is very popular in Georgia, especiallyamong the foreign tourists.

    Theatre is located at Shavteli st.26, Tbilisi, pedestrian zone. There is no parking

    possibility nearby, therefore its advised to park a car near Dolls Museum and walk

    about 100 meters to the Theatre.

    Tbilisi Marionette Theatre enjoys special attention of foreign tourists due to the

    possibility of offering performances with English/Russian subtitles. Though, its highly
