Teaching Effectiveness Matrix - ART and DESIGN DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENTS

Criteria for teaching effectiveness, Full Professor rank: “The teacher at the sustained excellence level maintains, but moves beyond teaching practices at the excellent level to demonstrate leadership in the area of teaching.” There is no quantification of criteria specified for promotion to any of the ranks within the Art and Design Department.

Providing evidence of positive student outcomes Many students go to graduate schools, competitive residencies, show work in galleries and museums and work in the art field. A selected list of students can be found in my supporting materials

Designing innovative activities in and outside of classes that enable students to work cooperatively or otherwise to contribute to each other’s learning

Organized student advisory committee and had a recruitment, informational event in the student union that involved students and faculty from each area being available to interested students to ask questions and students in the program showed their work. Organized studio students juried exhibition in the Student Exhibition Center and got local gallery owner to select work and give awards to students.

Organizing and participating in discussions, seminars and workshops in and outside one’s department to share information on learning methods, resources and career opportunities for students

Had painting class work with poetry class and exchanged work to create new work. Invited ESL students to class to have conversations and possibly broaden painting assignment. In my senior class I have taken students to visit the art museum to meet with staff, go to a local gallery to talk with owner, and have visiting faculty and alumni show work and discuss school, art, and job. I also have someone from career services come to my class to do presentation. In all of my classes peer critiques are part of the process of the learning. Attended Foundations in Art: Theory and Education about teaching in foundations of art and College Art Association annual conference to participate in informative lectures about art scholarship, research, and teaching. Both of these events have enriched my teaching and enhanced my work in the classroom.

Page 9: Sharon Harper - Missouri State UniversityVisions in Clay 2011, national juried competition, LH Horton Gallery, San Joaquin Delta College, Stockton, CA. Juror: Judith Schwartz, Author

Regular updating of syllabi and practices I continually change my assignments and syllabi to consider new ideas and outcomes. I look for assignments that allow student to productively explore creative decision making and find their individual voice.

Student Evaluations that are consistently highly positive

My student evaluations are consistently high as evidenced in my supporting materials.

Student Evaluation Assessment I have created a table of student evaluation results for 8 years of teaching. The means for 2004 and 2003 were unavailable. My numbers will show that I consistently score above the departmental mean and I consistently get numbers that reflect that students rate my teaching high by choosing a 1 or 2 for the following questions:

7. My instructor facilitated my learning in the course. 11. My instructor provided me with useful feedback 14. The instructor stimulated me to develop my own ideas and perspectives. 15.
