President’s Message by Mary Quiros Dear Fellow Artists, We are quickly moving into spring and I hope everyone has taken the time to paint and enter our 68th Annual National Exhibit. April 1, 2017 is the last day for entries. TWS is looking forward to the exhibition at the Patterson- Appleton Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St., Denton, Texas from June 9 through August 26. The week from June 5-9 will be full. It will begin with a membership meeting on June 5 from 5-6 p.m. followed by a demo with Soon Y. Warren. She will hold a work- shop from Tuesday through Friday from 9-4 each day. (There are still a few spaces left for the workshop.) On June 9, TWS will host a reception from 6-8 p.m. to kick off the exhibit. All of these events will be at the Patterson -Appleton Center. Officers of the TWS Board are in favor of changing the current by-law re- quiring the President to be a Signature Member. The Board feels that by im- plementing this change, more of our membership will be able to take part in running the Texas Watercolor Society. This change will be voted on at the membership meeting on June 5 and will also be sent to all the membership through Constant Contact. My year as President will come to an end in June and I will become Director-at-Large. The By-Law change will read as follows: Article V Elected Officers Section 1. The TWS workshop is limited to 16 people and a few spaces are still available. To enroll, go to the TWS website/workshops for an application or email Betsy Moritz, workshop chairman.

Warren will also be the Juror for the TWS 68th Annual National Exhibit. She has jurored many shows in the past and will be the juror for a number of shows scheduled for 2017 and 2018.#

Soon Y. Warren, known for her crystal and glass paintings, will give TWS demo and workshop in June

"Vibrant Reflection" will be the title of Soon Young Warren's upcoming TWS workshop June 6-9. She will give a free demo on June 5 at the Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts in Denton, TX, where the workshop will also take place.

Warren was born in South Korea and emigrated to the United States in 1987. She is a Fort Worth resident. She began her career as a full-time artist in 1998. Since then, she's won many awards, had numerous exhibitions and has had her paintings bought for permanent collections in several museums. She is a Purple Sage member of TWS and also is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society, the Southern Watercolor Society, and the Society of Watercolor Artists.

The tentative nominations are as follows and nominations are open from the membership.

Don’t wait until April 1 to submit your work to TWS

The 68th Texas Watercolor Society's Annual National Exhibit is right around the corner. Entries for the exhibit must be submitted by April 1. Each artist may submit up to three paintings, but not more than one can be selected for the exhibit. All submissions must be done within the last two years. Specific instructions are available in the prospectus, which can be found on the TWS website. Entries will be judged by Soon Y. Warren before her demo on June 5.

The exhibit will be held at the Patterson-

Appleton Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St., Denton, from June 9 through August 26. All paintings entered must be for sale. Paintings must be framed and matted in accordance with TWS guidelines.

Texas Watercolor Society will hold its annual membership meeting on Sunday June 5 before the demo by Warren. New officers will be elected and installed.

Kudos to our members for shows, awards, more

Pat Dispenziere's transparent watercolor The Play of Light VIII was one of 100 paintings juried into the 48th Watercolor West International Juried Exhibition at the City of Brea Gallery in Brea, CA.(LA area) by the juror, Robbie Laird. She won the Combined Merchandise Award 1 on her painting. The exhibition was on display Oct 15-Dec 18, 2016. Her transparent watercolor The Play of Light VII was juried into the California Watercolor Association 47th National Exhibition by juror Donna Zagotta. The juror of Awards, Linda Doll awarded the painting The Golden Artist Colors, INC Award. It was on exhibit at the Harrington Gallery in the Firehouse Arts Center in Pleasanton, CA Jan 14-Feb 25. Pat's watercolor painting Odessa Survivor was also in the North County Society of Fine Arts Members Juried show at the Escondido Municipal Gallery where it won an Honorable Mention.

Muriel Mimura won Best in Show in the Society of Watercolor Artists 2016 Membership Exhibition for her painting Alma with Monarchs (below) which

was hung in December 2016 in Fort Worth. Her painting Lupe with Oaxacan Embroidery was accepted for the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies Exhibition which will

hang April 7 - June 20, 2017 in Eugene, OR.

For her sixth painting trip with D*Lux Travel, Sue Kemp will travel to Andalucia, the region on Spain's southern coast. There participants will explore the area, including Granada, Rhonda and Sevilla. A small group of six will stay in a lovely hacienda, do watercolor sketches in several inspiring locations, enjoy a boat and carriage ride and have a private driver and wonderful guide. Participants will be immersed in the landscape and culture. Four spots are available. Coming this Fall: Another workshop with Michael Holter, this time on landscapes

After a fun and successful workshop in 2016, Michael Holter will return to the TWS audience for an October 2017 workshop. This time the focus will be "Landscape Impress-ionism." Dates for the workshop are set for Oct. 3-5 at the Church of Reconciliation in San Antonio. For information, email Betsy Moritz.

Mary Quiros had a one-woman show at the Red & White Gallery in Fayetteville from Jan. 14 through Feb. 25. The gallery is on the historic square in Fayetteville.
