Sharing Grace Our Vision: As a welcoming congregation, we share the transformational grace of God
through worship and spiritual growth; we glorify God by building up each other
and community through love, care, and outreach.
From our Priest in Charge Rev. Karen Freeman
Dear Friends of Grace, Delegates and clergy attending our Diocesan Convention in November received a tote bag on which the Diocesan Mission Statement was printed: “Making Disciples, Raising Up Saints & Transforming Communities For Christ.” The comment was made by one of our delegates that this statement sounded much like our own Grace Church Mission Statement, and it does: “Welcome, Transform, Build Up, Reach Out, Glorify God.” It’s a powerful statement. And if you think about it, it makes sense that parishes all over our diocese would have similar mission statements. In this letter, I would like to focus in particular on Welcome, the ministry of hospitality. At Convention, we heard from Mary Foster Parmer about the transformational tool she created called “Invite Welcome Connect.” As a church, we’ll be learning more about this tool in the Spring, and that will be exciting. As Christians, part of our calling as disciples of Jesus is to be welcoming. Remember on the Second Sunday of Advent our opening verse
was from Romans 15:7, “Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.” Welcome is about being open and receptive towards others with curiosity and compas-sion, and seeking to bless the other in some way. Welcome is about being generous and gracious towards others. On Sunday, January 5th, we will be welcoming a guest speaker at both services, the Rev. Betsy Swarzentraub, an experienced Methodist pastor and author of the book “Growing Generous Souls: Becoming Grace-Filled Stewards.” Pastor Betsy will be introducing us to the themes within her book, and we will be revisiting those themes in future sermons throughout the coming months. And on Sunday, January 12th, we will be welcoming for the first time to Grace our new bishop, the Rt. Rev. Megan Traquair. This will be a wonderful day! We’ll have one joint service at 10:00 a.m. There will be a Confirmation and we will be formally receiving some of our friends into the Episcopal Church. There will be a great family-style bring & share luncheon after the service and we will be asking Bishop Traquair to officially “open” our new Grace Parish Library. Everyone is welcome to come – invite your friends and family! With every blessing, Karen+ ________________________________________________________________________

Rodney Shoemaker, and your Jr. warden for the past two years, James Fulmer. There is another

Grace for their support over the years. I would like to thank Rev. Karen Freeman and Fr. Perry Polk.
Both stood beside me and supported me in my tenure as Senior Warden. There are two people
that I must give special thanks to, Kim Worthen (our office manager) and Gretchen Smith (our treas-

Alzheimer’s Education and Empowerment Workshop by Deborah Cupid
Solano County has 21,000 people of the 650,000 statewide with Alzheimer’s. John Garamendi, CA 3rd District Repre-sentative was the keynote speaker and discussed health and county concerns on the importance of early detection, diag-nosis, and care planning. Alzheimer’s is financially crippling and to date, there is no cure. This one day community educa-tion event was presented by the Alzheimer’s Association and Solano County Supervisor John Vasquez, District 4. Alzhei-mer’s Diana Spoul, Family Care Specialist, presented findings, vignettes, and answered questions on how to help loved ones followed by Kaiser’s Permanente Napa-Solano Memory Clinic, and North Bay Health Care physicians; all discussed How to Recognize the 10 Early Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s:
Memory loss that disrupts daily life Change in the ability to plan, problem solve and concentrate Difficulty in completing normal tasks Confusion about time and places Trouble understanding spatial and visual changes New problems with words when speaking or reading Misplacing things and unable to retrace the steps to find them Decreased or poor judgement Withdraws from usual social activities Change in mood and personality
Physicians shared that Alzheimer’s is a neurological disease, it is not physiological. Alzheimer’s is losing the ability to take care of yourself. Physicians shared Steps on How to Counsel the Family to Keep Cognitive Reserve and the Tools to have to keep your Brain: Interactive Games, Puzzles, Mediterranean Diet, Walking for 20 minutes daily improves your brain within
2 weeks, Exercise, Diet, Learn new things, and Challenge your mind. The different stages of Dementia can be managed through behavioral symptoms. 10 Steps to Approach Memory Concerns: ASSESS THE SITUATION
What changes in memory thinking or behavior are you noticing? What might be going on? Learn about the signs of Alzheimer’s and other dementias and the benefits of an early diagnosis. Has anyone expressed concern to you about the changes they’ve observed?
HAVE A CONVERSATION
The unknown can be scary for many people, especially when it involves your health. Many people find it helpful to confide in someone they trust rather than face it alone. Who can you discuss your concerns with?
Have a conversation as soon as possible. When is the best time to do so? How will you approach the conversation? Ask the person to go with you to the doctor. If needed have multiple conversations.
REACH OUT FOR HELP
Turn to the Alzheimer’s Association for information and support. Call the 24/7 hotline (800) 272.3900 to speak with a master’s-level clinician about your concerns and next step. Alzheimer’s Associ-
ation &AARP Community Resource Finder (alz.org/CRF) and Evaluating Memory and Thinking Problems: What to Expect (alz.org/evaluatememory) to learn what a typical medical evaluation may include.
Physicians shared that it is important to manage the behavioral symptoms and to connect with them to become human-istic in dealing with loved ones, and to learn the different stages of dementia in order to make plans for these stages for the best plan possible. After the diagnosis, you will need a Social Worker on your team, Nutritionist, and Physical Thera-pist. The program ended with Brianna McKellar, Music Therapist, who played an uplifting musical tribute from Johnny Cash’s album “Johnny Cash-Unsurpassed American Masters” lyrics to: “Thanksgiving Prayer”.
Team Grace Episcopal Church FF, would like to thank you Grace Episcopal Church for the $2,074.00 donation made to the Alzheimer’s Association

Reflecting on my time with you all at your convention, I recall an old saying “it just warms the cockles of my heart!” I can’t
help but think of this expression every time I reflect on my time with you in Sacramento - from the honor of being invited
to keynote Bishop Megan’s first diocesan convention, to folks coming up to me sharing that their vestry is reading and
studying the Invite Welcome Connect book, to the woman who said to me with tears in her eyes, ”I’ve been to many dioc-
esan conventions and there’s never been one quite like this.”
As I walked around the room during the creative small group time after my short workshop, the joy, energy, and vitality
was palpable! My initial learning from my short time with you is this. As I said in my keynote address, I’ve taken this
ministry from coast to coast as well as to Europe and Canada and my hosts often warn me that their context, issues, and
obstacles to this ministry are quite different from everyone else’s. Northern California was no exception!
My mission with Invite Welcome Connect is to acknowledge that despite our various locations, contexts, and differences,
we humans are the same on the inside: We each have a need to be seen, heard, welcomed, affirmed, and loved. The min-
istry of Invite Welcome Connect, if implemented prayerfully, intentionally, thoughtfully, and relationally, can meet these
deep needs and desires. My prayer for the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California is that you wholeheartedly take the
challenge of creativity seriously, becoming inspired risk-takers for the sake of the Gospel! May you get out of your comfort
zones by inviting someone to church and by learning to articulate your faith story. May you listen long and deeply to the
stories of those with whom you worship and those who have darkened the doors of your church for the first time. May
you be transformed by embracing this ministry.
Blessings to you,
Mary Foster Parmer

PEW CUSHIONS!
Our Episcopal Church Women’s group (ECW) have embarked upon an exciting initiative to put quality full-length cushions on all of the pews! Part of Grace
Church’s vision is to be a welcoming congregation; we feel that having comforta-ble seating in church fits in well with that vision.
Through research and quotes, we have chosen Waggoners, Inc. as our supplier - they have vast experience in making pew cushions. The color chosen for the
cushions is called Warm Red and it has caramel-colored flecks within the weave. The fabric matches beautifully with our carpeting.
ECW and the Vestry are contributing to the overall cost, but ECW would also like to give the congregation the opportunity to share in this venture of adding com-
fort and beauty to our worship space. To that end, ECW are suggesting ‘sponsorship’ of the pew cushions.
The cost of sponsoring one full-length high quality cushion is $316.00.
If you can sponsor a full cushion or part of a cushion, your gift will be very much appreciated by all. Please make checks out to ‘Grace Episcopal Church’ with ‘Pew Cushions’ on the memo line of your check. Please put checks or cash into the treasure box by the organ or give to Kim in the Office. Thank you!

PEW CUSHIONS!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You have been incredibly generous in donations towards the cost of the pew cushions. Through your giving, together with Vestry and ECW contributions,
we have raised the amount needed to put a beautiful and hard-wearing
warm red cushion (with caramel flecks) on each pew in the church.
The cushions will arrive some time before Easter. How wonderful this will be! Thank you so much!
Blue Christmas Christmas can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas without a loved one; it may be a season that has always been difficult. There are times when life is good and beau-
tiful, and celebration is appropriate. But there are also times of distress and loss.
On Saturday, December 21st at 7:00 PM, we are offering a Blue Christmas Service to those for whom the Christmas season brings difficult or upsetting emotions. It is a service of re-
membering, lament, music and hope. All are welcome.
Advent Course: Journeying the Way of Love
Continues each Sunday through Advent
Two sessions are offered:
9:00 a.m. (in Room 6) or 11:30 a.m. (at the back of the Parish Hall)
You need not have attended the first week to join in with us
*** Exciting News! *** Our new Bishop Megan Traquair will be visiting us here at Grace Church on
Sunday, January 12th! This presents an opportunity for anyone who wishes to be formally received into The Episcopal Church or to be Confirmed by the Bishop.

Safety Corner – December 2019 Sharing Grace Newsletter. We have been aligned with the weather high pressure areas, low pressure areas and jet stream flow so as not to have rain. It will be here. The roadways will be slippery during this rain. Here are a few defensive driving tips to assist, with your safe driving operation. Defensive Driving Tips: If you get tired while driving long distances, stop and rest. Get out of the car and take a break. Always use your seat belt. This includes your lap belt as well as your shoulder belt. Both are necessary for safety. If your vehicle is equipped with an airbag, you must still use seat belts. Adjust all accessories. Insure that your mirrors are adjusted as well as your seat. Secure loose objects in the vehicle. If you must make an evasive maneuver in order to avoid an accident, an unsecured object (e.g., tool box, brief case, etc.) may fly around in the vehicle and injure a passenger. Concentrate on your driving, rather than personal problems or your work. Be attentive to your own ac-tions, the actions of others and the roadway environment. Keep a safe stopping distance behind the vehicle in front of you. You should be able to prepare to stop within 2 seconds, whatever your speed. Remember, it takes the average person about 3/4 of a second to recognize a hazard after it is first seen and another 3/4 of a second to switch from the accelerator to the brake pedal. At 55 mph, your vehicle covers a distance of more than 80 feet per second. You will have traveled about 120 feet before you actually began to brake. Be very cautious when adjusting your car radio, do not use your cell phone or text,or handle any other device that will distract you from driving defensively. Never drink alcohol while operating a vehicle. Assign a designated driver after social functions that include alcohol use. Be alert to "blind spots" when changing lanes. Look all ways and always use turn signals. Keep a cool head. Don't drive aggressively and don't take chances. Happy Holidays Ron Cupid
