Catalonia’s two official languages are Catalan and Spanish. Virtually all Catalans are bilingual and many are trilingual (with English as a foreign language) or even have knowledge of four languages or more, with over 30,000 people studying languages in Catalonia each year.

Barcelona is Mobile World Capital, the 4th Smart City in the world and the first European Capital of Innovation. Catalonia is Southern Europe’s ICT leader (96.3% of firms with Internet ac-cess and 30% involved in e-commerce), dominated by telecommunications services companies, software develop-ment and consumer electronics goods and telecommunications device manu-facturing.

Over 85 national and international operators offer telephone and cable services, digital voice transmission and video and data connections. Why Spanish matters

• The 4th spoken language in the world.• 21 countries have Spanish as their official language while 5 others (includ-ing the United States) have a significant Spanish-speaking population.• By 2030, 535 million people will speak Spanish.

Barcelona attracts talent: a study and work-experience mecca for young peo-ple worldwide, 23,000 foreign students enrol yearly in Barcelona universities and Catalan universities receive around 17% of all Erasmus students in Spain.

Business tourism: half of the 15 mil-lion tourists per year are professionals and Barcelona is the world’s leading city in terms of international congress delegates.

Catalonia also takes education seriously, with 725 top-qual-ity public and private schools and 17 international schools.
