Overview The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) is partnering with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (CDFW) Shared Habitat Alliance for Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Program to establish a feral pig hunt on the shores of Lake Berryessa on weekends from August through March.
Need The shores of Lake Berryessa host grasslands and Blue Oak Savannah that support a range flora and fauna including the western screech owl, American river otter, coyote, black tail deer, mountain lion, Nutal’s woodpecker, red tailed hawk, and bald and golden eagles. Residents and employees of the Lake Berryessa region observe that feral pigs on the landscape have damaged grasslands surrounding the lake.
Resource damage along East Side Road arising from feral pig rooting to obtain food.
SHARE Program
CDFW’s SHARE Program will award SHARE Access Permits by random draw through their Automated License Data System (ALDS) system. Seven SHARE Access Permits, each good for two hunters, will be drawn for each weekend hunt. Each pair of hunters will be assigned to a pig hunt area upon being
drawn. The allowable method of take for these feral pig hunts is archery or shotgun with slug only. For more information, visit: www.wildlife.ca.gov/hunting/share
Permits & Restrictions All hunt participants will need to have a valid hunting license from CDFW and a firearms permit from the USBR. To obtain a USBR firearms permit, please call the Lake Berryessa Park Ranger Office at (707)966-2111 ext. 113.
Except for the SHARE Program hunt, hunting on all other USBR land surrounding Lake Berryessa is Prohibited. All hunters are required to report to a safety briefing at Eticuera Day Use Area, 8600 Berryessa Knoxville Road, Napa, CA at 4 pm on the Friday before their weekend permit.
Camping at large is also prohibited on Federal and Napa County lands. Participants will need to arrange for accommodations at local campgrounds or in the nearby communities of Napa, St. Helena, Winters, Vacaville, or Fairfield, CA. For more information on camping at Lake Berryessa, visit: https://www.usbr.gov/mp/ccao/berryessa/rec-opp.html
Important Regulations Hunters should be familiar with all applicable regulations and laws 43 CFR Part 423 of the Code of Federal Regulations; FGC 5652, FGC 4652, and FGC 4657 of California Fish and Game Codes; and Napa County Ordinances Chapters 10 and 12. All participants are expected to pack out all refuse and Leave No Trace.
