THE IMPERFECT ISSUE What is perfection, anyway? The Fall 2014 issue of Kinfolk explores the beauty of imperfection across food, people, ideas and more, showcasing the narratives these notions encompass. Nothing is perfect and it's often the most highly flawed things that give life its charm. So-called flaws should be embraced, diversity should be revered and eccen-tricity encouraged. The Imperfect Issue puts things society might deem rough around the edges under a microscope to explore their true character. Whether it's mismatched eyes, patched-up clothing or a broken plate, such unusual features often reveal lives lived to the fullest and rich with stories.

Millions visit xkcd.com each week to read Randall Munroe's webcomic offering hilarious and informative answers to impor-tant, but hardly thought of, questions. To answer fans’ strange questions like “How fast can you hit a speed bump, driving, and live?” and “How many humans would a T Rex rampaging through New York need to eat a day?,” Munroe runs com-puter simulations, pores over stacks of declassified military research memos, solves differential equations and consults nuclear reactor operators. His answers are masterpieces of clarity and hilarity with comics that often predict humankind's complete annihilation or at least a really big explosion.

This book introduces an endlessly fascinating region that combines rapid change with enduring hospitality; modern cities with ancient temples; urban experiences with breathtak-ing scenery. There are delicious foods, warm and welcoming people and unmissable ancient sites in each of the region’s five countries, such as Cambodia’s Angkor, Laos’s Vat Phou, Myanmar’s Bagan, Thailand’s Ayutthaya and Vietnam’s Hue. Each country has its own mystery and intrigue, whether it's the floating villages of Inle Lake or the ethnic hill villages of northern Thailand and Laos, as well as marvellous beaches and abundant wildlife. The sights you will see are memorable and enduring.

9788280342003ROYal pORcElaiN FROM siaM: UNpackiNG ThE RiNG cOllEcTiONBy HABU & ROONEYHARDBACK

Over one hundred years ago, chestfuls of colorful Bencharong porcelain, custom-made in China for the Siamese Royal Court, arrived in Oslo. In 1904 Norwegian sea captain Theodor Ring donated 250 pieces of the porcelain, acquired during his Royal Siamese Navy service, to two Norwegian museums. Long forgotten, these lavish treasures from King Chulalong-korn's Thailand have finally been unpacked again. In this book, international experts examine the Ring Collection in light of new research indicating the time and environment in which it originated. Richly illustrated, Royal Porcelain from Siam reveals the distinguished Thai contribution to the world history of ceramics.

Are you familiar with the plots briefed here? You may know the titles of them by now or even realize that they are fantasy books that have been made into movies in the recent past. Fantasy books have never lost their charm. They have fascinated readers of all ages, from generation to generation. And some have gone further; they have flown from book pages onto the screen to captivate a larger audience.

This year two more book-inspired films await us: The Maze Runner and The Giver. Before catching this cinematic duo, let’s

get to know more about the original stories. Read the books beforehand and you may be able to fill in the movie’s blanks and appreciate the director’s plot twist!

New York Times bestselling The Maze Runner is written by James Dashner who also authored the 13th Reality series and the Mortality Doctrine. Dashner’s inspiration for this title comes from two books he’d read when he was younger, Lord of the Flies and Ender's Game. In The Maze Runner, Dashner introduces us to Thomas who wakes up in a lift remembering only his first name. When the lift’s doors open up on an expanse called the Glade, Thomas is welcomed by the Gladers who, like him, don’t know why or how they got there. All they know is that the surrounding maze’s stone doors open every morning and close every night and that every 30 days a new boy comes up in the lift. However, the very next day, the Glade’s first girl is sent up with a surprising message signalling Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. With his newfound friends, Thomas works to unlock the dark secrets buried within his mind to find a way out.

Another book, The Giver, is written by Lois Lowry, author of more than thirty young adult books. Lowry has received countless awards including two Newbery Medals for Number the Stars and The Giver. The haunting The Giver begins with “It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened." It then takes us into a seemingly ideal world without conflict, poverty, unemployment, divorce, injustice, or inequality. It is a time in which family values are paramount, teenage rebellion is unheard of, and even good manners are a way of life. In December, each twelve-year-old receives a life assignment from the Elders. While Jonas’s friends are named Caretaker of the Old and Assistant Director of Recreation, Jonas is chosen for something special. Led to the man known only as the Giver, he begins to learn of the dark secrets underlying his world’s fragile “perfection.” This provocative story of a boy who experiences something incredible and undertakes something impossible questions every value we have taken for granted and reexamines our deepest beliefs.

Summer may have already come and gone and it’s back to school for the kids but that doesn’t mean they (and you, too!) can’t have fun anymore.

Plus, while you’re of course going to want to engage children intellectually so that they can become global citizens with something worthwhile to contribute, you are also going to want to inspire

them to think outside the box. Kids can do amazing things these days and imag-ine how much more youngsters that you

know will be able to do with your support. That’s why I’d like to present to you a couple

of vibrantly refreshing new products. Please have a look…

LINK SIAM

Some say digital devices have made watches obsolete, but I beg to differ. Not only is a watch a fashion statement, it helps people visualise math (Think fractions!) and science concepts. World-renowned Martin Scorsese said “If one wants to reach younger people at an earlier age to shape their minds in a critical way, you really need to know how ideas and emotions are expressed visually.”

Link Siam’s creatively designed wristwatches promote the intrinsic value of Thai art, culture and more. With these tasteful time pieces, everyone can stay punctual and sharp and take a little part of Thailand with them wherever they go.
