noTE FRoM THE EDIToRMarch and April are two very busy months, with St Patricks Day, Mothers Day and Easter following one after the other. In addition to shopping local for the goods and services you will need during the festivities, there is ample scope for getting back to

some traditional ‘free’ values too.The St Patricks Day Parade can be as much fun as you want it to be! A nice home-cooked meal for Mother will always be well-received (she will just be happy not to be cooking!) An Easter Egg hunt for the kids, and maybe the adults too, should cheer everyone up.In these difficult times we simply have to rally round and support each other. Supporting local business is absolutely vital too. They are doing their best for you - just look at all the special offers in this edition - so please support their endeavours. And then it’s May, and sure the weather is always good in May - isn’t it?!

Eight elite gymnasts from Shannon Gymnastics club travelled to a friendly international in Thessaloniki, Greece, where we came home with 8 medals in late December. The U12 boys competition was won by Darragh Moane (from Raheen only 9 years old), and Matthew Mason from Shannon took 2nd to him. Grainne Hennessy from Ennis took 1st in U12 girls and the U12 team of girls Grainne Hennessy, Alannah Kelly (Shannon), Keelin Lyons(Sixmilebridge) and Jade McCormack(Shannon) took a team bronze. In the 13-14 years age group Molly Nightingale from Gort took gold and Becky O Donnell from Kildysart was unlucky after having qualified for finals in 3rd place to have a fall and drop out of medals in finals.

T h e s e gymnasts all train with Shannon Gymnastics Club, and they specialise in a discipline known as Tumbling. They perform rows of linked flips and somersaults and twists down a 25m long sprung track. These children train minimum 4 days a week under head coach Elaine Ryan.Last weekend one of the clubs elite teams (Alannah Kelly, Matthew Mason, Molly Nightingale and Becky O Donnell) won 3rd place in the highest level team event in Ireland, beaten only by 2 teams from a world class standard club in the north of Ireland. Coach Elaine Ryan hopes that some of these tumblers will qualify for world cup competitions representing Ireland in the coming year. All 8 of the above children are on the National Tumbling Squad and are presently working towards their next event in Bulgaria. For further information contact Elaine Ryan on 086 3755160 or email [email protected].

The parade will take place on Tuesday March 17th 2009 and will begin at 12 noon. The route will be down through O’Connell St and past the viewing stand which will be situated outside Penney’s.The 37th Limerick International Band Competition will take place in Limerick City on Sunday March 15th. To mark the end of the annual Lenten ‘chocolate famine’, Shannon Heritage has arranged for the Easter Bunny to give out hundreds of Easter Eggs at their Cra g g a u n owe n visitor attraction near Quin on Easter Sunday 12th April ’09 from 1pm to 5pm, last admissions at 4pm.The Easter Bunny will make a special guest appearance at this Easter event at Craggaunowen ‘The Living Past Experience’ which tells the story of the arrival of the Celts in Ireland.A family fun filled day is promised with children being offered the opportunity to enjoy a bouncing castle and practise their bouncing skills for the Easter bunny. Traditional musicians and a traditional storyteller will be on hand to lend a festive atmosphere. There will be a puppet show featuring Easter chickens and bunnies, and a magic show. While walking around the park visitors can experience how the Celts lived, fought, farmed, and hunted. “Caomhan the Celt” will be there on the day to show visitors his Crannog (lake dwelling). Visitors will see the resident wild boar, the Iron Age Roadway and Ring Fort.

Shannon & District Chamber of Commerce has some interesting events

planned for March and April open to members and non-members alike. The first event, which takes place on Thursday, 5 March in the Conference & Banqueting Centre at the Shannon Shamrock Hotel is called an ‘Ambassadors Evening’ . It is described as ‘an opportunity to hear how you can represent yourself, your organisation, or your region by organising an event or influencing business for Clare in 2009’. It’s also the organisers’ way of saying ‘thank you’ to anyone who brought business to the county in 2008. It will take place in the Shannon Shamrock Hotel from 5-7pm on Thursday, 5 March. RSVP to [email protected] or 061 710267.

The second event is a follow-on to the very successful Regional Networking Evening which was held in Dromoland Castle last November and provided an ideal setting for Chamber members (and non-members) to present their businesses to other attendees. This event will take place in the Radisson SAS Hotel, Limerick, on Wednesday, 8 April. There’s an entry fee for attending but as it’s a ‘network to get work’ opportunity, it could be money well spent. Time 6-9pm. Log onto www.shannonchamber.ie for further details or to register.

SHAnnon CHAMBER EVEnTS

They can also see a replica of the leather hulled boat which St. Brendan the Navigator built and set sail in, in search of Hy-Brasil an island he had seen in a vision. For Further information contact central reservations at 061 360788 or www.shannonheritage.com

A DAY In THE LIFE oF ....Alan Mullin and Darren O’Connell, both from Shannon, set up the Twelve Marathons project to raise as much money as they could to help aid Cystic Fibrosis care in Ireland. They ran a marathon a month for the duration of 2008, starting at

m i d n i g h t on New Year’s Eve in Zurich and ending in Lisbon in December. Alan lives in Dublin and works as solicitor with WhitneyMoore Solicitors who were there main sponsor, and Darren lives in Shannon and teaches in Rice College, Ennis. This ‘Day in the Life of...’ is a typical race day for Alan and Darren. The night before a race we would try to be in bed by about 9.30 or 10.00 although it is always difficult to sleep. Most marathons usually start around 8.30/9.00 and we would normally get up about 2 hours before a race. For big city marathons we would have to get up earlier to be at the start at a certain time.We would eat very little before a race, maybe just a small amount of porridge, or a banana, although, in the days leading up to a race we would ‘carbo-load’ by eating lots of pasta and pizza. During races we would take energy gels and whatever sweets or fruit were given out along the route. The day after a race the body would be crying out for junk food and we would usually oblige!Immediately before the start we would run for a few minutes and do a few stretches and then start layering on the Deep Heat on the legs. Because we are so hydrated at this stage we would have to go to the toilet several times before the start. Then it’s just a matter of staying warm and loose until the race starts. Some good tips before running a marathon - never run on a full stomach and apply vaseline liberally to all chafe-

prone areas! We had two main motivations behind the challenge, the first was to help the Cystic Fibrosis Charity, as a good friend of ours died from CF in 1996. The second was that we both saw it as a physical challenge and an adventure of sorts. As well as the 12 marathons, we also ran a limited number of shorter races around Ireland as part of our on-going training and fund-raising. To date we have raised close to €19,000 and are looking to those who pledged cash during the year to follow through with donations so that we can reach our target of €20,000. The hardest marathon for Alan was the Swiss Alpine, mainly because the terrain was so tough. The run took us over the snow line and through two huge mountain passes. Tough as it was we both agree that it was the best because it was very different from a normal marathon and the scenery was spectacular. Another favourite was Rome with a spectacular finish next to the Colosseum. Alan ran his best time of 3hrs 33min in Connemara where, in contrast, this was Darren’s worst. He felt drained by the halfway mark and from there it was a long, long way to the finish. Darren’s best time was in Milan where he ran 3hrs and 51mins while this was Alan’s turn to struggle. For each of the us the enjoyment of the race depended a great deal on how we felt on the day and how the race turned out.During the year we did not do a lot of training, as once we were fit we just had to look after ourselves. After each race we would take a couple of weeks break to let our bodies recover and then we would spend a couple of weeks preparing for the next race. Alan works in Dublin so for training he would run home (about 5 miles) from work 2/3 nights a week and then do longer runs at the weekend. As a teacher Darren had a lot of time off during the summer and did a lot of running in Cratloe Woods and the surrounding hills. The travelling was one of the most difficult aspects of the challenge as, for some races, it was literally a case of flying in on the Saturday, run the Sunday and fly home Sunday evening, although for the Swiss Alpine race we had to travel a few days before as we had to acclimatise to the altitude. We have been good friends for years and doing a challenge like this alone would have been an ordeal but doing it together made it a lot more rewarding and a lot

The assembly point has changed this year to the Link Road past St Caimans School and the parade will start from the end of Sli na Mara and proceed up past the GAA and on to the Town Centre via the normal route. Assembly is at 1.00pm for a 2.00pm start. If any group, club or society is interested in

taking part please contact Tomas Mac Cormaic, Town Hall (061 362319) or Greg Duff, Chair, Organising Committee (087 9697404).After the parade the festivities will carry on inside Skycourt with traditional music and dancing upstairs in the Foodcourt. Everyone is welcome.

more fun. Neither of us are married but we were both given great support by our partners Nichola and Daniell. After a marathon you always just feel relieved that you don’t have to run any further. Once you cross the line your legs start to seize up and the hobbling would begin, this would last for 3 to 4 days. It is difficult to eat after a marathon, although we would always have a couple of beers to celebrate! But usually by 6 or 7 in the evening we would feel wrecked. It is very hard to sleep the night after a marathon as your heart rate takes so long to get back to normal, but the feeling of achievement is fantastic.Running a marathon a month is an incredible feat. If you have pledged some money to the guys (or even if you have not!) please get in touch and help them reach their target of €20,000.
