Kelemen was awarded his undergraduate degree at U.C.L.A. and did graduate studies at Harvard. He began his professional career as a downhill skiing instructor, served as the news director and anchorman for a California radio station, and then traveled Middle East to conduct 12 years of post-graduate field research. In May of 1990 Rabbi Kelemen and his colleague, Malki Samuel founded SHALVA a special needs foundation and school for children with disabilities in Israel, inspired by their own experiences with raising a child with special needs. Today SHALVA has become a leader in the field of disability awareness and intervention in the Middle East.
