Dear Friends,

Last April tornadoes cut a path of devastation and destruction across much of the south. Particularly hard hit was Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Twelve percent of the city was destroyed; 48 people were killed; over 7200 homes and businesses were destroyed; over 7,000 people were left unemployed as a result of the tornadoes destruction.

The country reacted with shock at the images, but as time passes our memories of those disasters and devastation fades. Others take their place. Nonetheless, life isn’t suddenly or quickly restored in those communities. Recovery takes years. The Presbyterian Disaster Assistance prides itself in not only responding immediately to disasters, but offering long term help to communities in need.

Tuscaloosa is just one of the many places where the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance goes to help people and communities clean up and rebuild their lives and their homes. PDA’s motto is, “Out of Chaos, Hope.”

Don and Nancy Porter are in Tuscaloosa as you read this, volunteering their time and their labor to help with the ongoing efforts. The World Wide Mission Committee plans on sending another group of volunteers to Tuscaloosa at the end of April. If you’re interested in volunteering, contact Tressa Brown.

Until the introduction of the Salk vaccine in 1955 polio was one of the most devastating diseases that existed. An epidemic in1952 affected 58,000 people, leaving over 21,000 with some form of paralysis. Over 3,100 people died that year from polio.

Perhaps you are old enough to remember the polio scare and knew people affected by it. Most of you probably remember getting the vaccine, first through a series of injections and then later an oral vaccine. My wife was one of those who contracted it. Guy Richardson was another. Today because of eradication efforts the disease doesn’t exist in the United States. But pockets of polio still exist in certain parts of the world, including India.

Chuck and Evie Keiser, along with fellow Danvillians, Bob and Patty Rowlard are leaving February 9th on a trip to India sponsored by Rotary International. They will be part of a team administering polio vaccine to children.

While Don and Nancy and Chuck and Evie are actively responding to the needs of others, Scott Scutchfield is working to organize a second medical mission trip sponsored by our church. Original plans to go to Honduras did not work out, so the group is working to find an alternative.

Lately, our lectionary readings have focused on God’s call. Samuel heard the still quiet voice of God calling to him in the middle of the night. Andrew and Peter, John and James heard Jesus’ call to come and follow him, and they did. God continues to call us, for the needs are great. Maybe you can’t go to Tuscaloosa or to India or to Honduras, but just as the needs are varied, so are the opportunities for each of us to serve. There are opportunities right here within the church and the community. One thing I know and have witnessed is that it makes a difference. It makes a difference to the people who are served and to the people who serve. I invite all of you for the sake of Christ to make a difference this coming year.

Grace & peace,

Jim

Good Shepherd Hospital & the Christian Medical Institute of the Kasai, Congo With your generous response at the Christmas Alternative Gift Market, our congregation raised $1530.00 for Good Shepherd Hospital in south-central D. R. Congo. It is a 140-bed teaching hospital located in an extremely poor rural area. Costs for medical care in the Congo are often beyond the means of local villagers. Fees are sometimes set based on the number of cassava plants a woman must sell to pay for one medical consultation. Some can afford care but many patients cannot pay at all. Without the support of churches and individual caring Christians, the hospital would have to close. But with your gifts, Good Shepherd Hospital can extend health care to more impoverished Congolese families. Thank you for caring by supporting this medical mission with your donations at our 2011 Alternative Gift Market.

“Give them something to eat”—these are words from Jesus telling us to feed his people. Since June of 2010, one way our church has been doing that is with our Soups On Us (SOU) program. For over two years, many volunteers have faithfully prepared approximately 275 boxes of food each month. That is over 8000 boxes of food! We have an opportunity to add to that number on Saturday, February 11, when we will gather to cook soup, prepare sandwiches, fill boxes and deliver nourishing food to God’s children, our neighbors who are hungry. Starting at 8:30 am there will be something for all of us to do. Come join us!

Then, on Sunday, February 12, we will collect our Cents-Ability offering. Cents-Ability, a program adopted by our church in June, 2011, attempts to alleviate hunger in our Presbytery and in the world. So far, our church has collected close to $2400-all this by each of us thinking about our blessings, being thankful for our food, and contributing a small amount, to our ability, per meal. Bring your coins, your bills, your checks on February 12 and let us joyfully and thankfully keep that total growing.
